    I plant mine 6" apart. I drop a string from the gutter of my house (10 ft) down to the ground for each plant and wrap it around the stem - it doesn't even need to be tied. The plant finds the string in no time and it's off to the races. I get 1/2 gallon every 3 days from 20 plants. They are delicious stir-fried with garlic.

    Im an agroecological engineering student and We planted this In a school garden We made with the kids as part of our study plan. We are going to harvest this friday. We used some natural repellents to avoid white fly and mites and We used a lot of horse manure compost, liquid organic fertilizers were Also aplied. Keep it up with the vids, ill send you pics of the harvest with the kids.

      Kevin Gerardo Funes A great plant for school gardens! We use these in the gardens we design for schools as well. What's fun to do it to make a bean tunnel with theses using wire fence panels (I call them cattle panels here). The kids love it! Yes I am going to have to start taking action earlier with the mites are here. They usually were never bad, but have been awful the last few years! Yes that would be great. Find and like The More You Grow on Facebook and you can send the pictures on there. Would love to see them! Thanks for watching!

    I've grown a lot of stuff before and I decided I was gonna try some new things this year since I got married and there are more mouths to feed...so this is one of them. So far I have had 1 or 2 failures, but I'm really hoping these succeed with the amount of rain and heavy summer heat we get in southeast VA. I went out of town last week for 3 days and all of my tomato plants tried to die on me because of a heatwave...so I brought em inside and watered the crap out of em and managed to save em all. Good info on your video!

Here in Ohio it's been like hell hot, so I guess by watching your video I need to go and attempt to untangle my yard beans and give them a big string to grow on...thanks so much I now know what they are and not confused as to why these peas which I thought they were not beans had long little things growing at the end. My first thought since this is the first time growing them something was eating the ends of them off...lol well now the mystery is solved.

    Thanks these are the beans fron my youth. Love them do they need a nitrogen fertilizer more than other vegies ?

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +David Brown I don't actually fertilize mine with nitrogen at all. Under the right conditions they will actually be able to produce their own nitrogen! Since they are considered legumes they can form a relationship with nitrogen-fixing soil microbes. The bacteria actually infect the roots and will form lumps on the roots called nodules, which the microbes will take up residence. In exchange for nutrients from the bean plant the microbes will produce nitrogen that they pull from the air, which is then used by the plants! Isn't nature handy? You can order these microbes as well to get a better inoculation. They come in a powder form and you lightly coat your seeds in it before you plant them. I can give you a link to a few places where I get mine if you would like. One 1lb bag can treat 50-100 lbs of seed so will last you for a long time if refrigerated. It is around just $10 I believe. I order it for my legume cover crops and black eyed peas so have it around for my yardlongs. You technically can give them nitrogen early on when they are 1' tall or so. If you do this though they will not form this relationship with the microbes. Kinda like why pay these guy with my hard earned nutrients for something I already have? Business savvy little guys haha! Just want to be careful to not give them too much or you'll end up with more vines than beans! I definitely love these beans as well! Was picking what you saw in the beginning of this video everyday if not 2x that many! Thanks for watching and for the comment! Let me know if you have any other questions! 😊

    • @elyserhyne243
      @elyserhyne243 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Beans actually add nitrogen to the soil if you let the roots stay in the ground over the winter. As the roots break down they add nitrogen and are great soil for tomatoes the next year.

  • @gee2241
    @gee2241 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Love ❤️ the video. Are the leaves edible? Like raw in salads or sautéed like spinach?
    And, if you let the pods mature, can you harvest the seeds?

    • @benthere8051
      @benthere8051 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When the plants get over 9 or 10 feet tall trim the shoots. The shoots and young leaves are edible, just like sweet potato or chayote vines.
      The seeds can be harvested but they are too small for anything but growing more plants.

    Sorry this is a long one. I started 38 of these red an green in 3” starter pots 11 days ago from seed and most of them are already around 2-4” tall. I was thinking of having them in hanging pots cause there’s a lot of cats that hang around my house. Think that would be a good idea? And I don’t remember if you like rose bushes but I had 32 clippings of one that I have in my front yard that are already potted with rooting hormone agent to help. A few are starting to show some new growth if you would like a few for your class or home I’d be happy to bring some. Right now their in my greenhouse to keep them warm and out of the elements. I’d love to see how they do in the hands of a much more experienced grower. Be warned though it is a rather unique rose bush that does something very odd that I’m hoping the clippings will do too. But I’ll leave that a secret for now. Nothing better then a good mystery. And one last thing I planted 4 fruit tees in my yard that are spaced 15-18 feet apart. Do you think planting watermelons and cantaloupes between them would be a good idea in a slightly raised bed or would in ground be a better or worse idea? I’d like something for ground coverage between them to be honest. Something with bigger leafs.

    Hi there, good afternoon. You said that you plant the yard long beans at 12 inches apart. How many plants do you have growing in one hole? How many holes of beans will produce one pound? Do you know the average.

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One plant per 12 inches. Not sure on weight but from 10 plants I was getting sometimes 12-24 beans per day. More than I could reasonably manage. They are extremely prolific when they are happy haha

    Loving your videos!! Wondering if you have tried using any natural insecticides, I read one of the comments that spider mites decimated your beans....have you tried spraying a dish soap water solution on your plants? I have heard that this works well..Thanks for your time and sharing your knowledge with us.

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they definitely demolished them last year. Thank goodness it was at the end of the season. Unfortunately they were so infested that I don’t think spraying them would have even mattered much. It was better to just remove the as to where they won’t infect everything else. Spider mites and scale insects seem to be my arch enemies in the garden. If it were something like a container plant I probably would have attempted it , but this was like a 20 ft row haha. Thanks for the suggestions though and thinks for watching!

      I don’t really use a lot. I inoculate the seeds with rhizobia and that symbiotic relationship fixes all the nitrogen they need if healthy. After that when they begin to flower and fruit I water with a fertilizer called Medina Hasta-Gro that is high in phosphate for the flower and fruit production

      I’m in the north Texas area for the summer and will be headed back down there for one more semester here in a few week. It was dry for just about everything! It takes the beans around 60-75 days til harvest so down there where it stays warm longer it couldn’t hurt to try

      Thanks. I never pay much attention to how long it takes 'em to produce when I throw them out in spring, but they're sooo done by now! We had rain here today, which is a blessing for this time of year, so, you're right.. couldn't hurt to try. Have a good fall semester; can't say I"m looking forward to the traffic when you Ags get back to town... LOL Just kidding... sort of!

      I have grown both and think they both taste great, but After growing both I much prefer the Orient Wonder variety, they are slower to get mealy and tend to just be crunchier and more productive in my experience

    So if you find a soft bean, you can lick it and set it aside to dry to get seeds for next year, right ?

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To get seed for next year you have to let them get all the way brown and dry. Once the plant matures some pods though it stops producing. So if I get some over ripe ones I pull them off and give to the chickens so to keep the plant producing. Then at the end of the season you can let them dry for next year seed

      My favorite variety is Orient Wonder, but there are many good ones out there. They do like warm weather, but you can get them in any time after you last frost date and probably be ok. If it wasn’t storming so much here I’d already be planting them and I’m in zone 7b/8a

      Kali Kale technically yes, but I wouldn’t, they don’t produce as many mature peas as black eyed peas and other variety’s grown for the peas do. These are much better utilized as a green bean in my opinion. You get more food from them used that way

      veronica bui Howdy Veronica! Here where I live they are called cattle panels. I have included a link at the end of this comment that will show you a picture of what they look like. We have them at places such as feed stores where they sell livestock equipment. I get mine at a store called Tractor Supply Company. They 16 feet in length on average and make a convenient makeshift fence/trellis for vining plants. If these aren't available where you live any kind of wire type fencing will do, just make it the length you desire and support it with posts. All we're needing is anything for the beans to wrap around that will allow them to climb up. So feel free to be creative! They are not picky about what they climb up as long as they have something they are able to wrap their tendrils around. Hopefully this answers your question! If have any other questions or these aren't available I'll do my best to help you come up with another solution 😊

    mine has an army of ants over the flowers, some said they are beneficial but I don’t think so. Any advice?

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Backyard Garden ants in the flowers aren’t usually a bad thing. Beans often have something called extrafloral nectaries. Pretty much nectar glads without a flower. They attract ants and their body guards of sorts. The only time ants are a bad thing in plants are if you find aphids under the leaves (ants herd/farm them like livestock) or if ants have made their mound in one of your potted plants, but in this case I would t worry about them unless you can see them damaging the beans themselves (usually not the case)

      They do have tendrils. They might climb a tree but I don’t see them being able to cling well. They do better with some kind of trellis, like a fence, cattle panel, bamboo stakes, etc

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really don’t apply any. I inoculate my yard long beans with rhyzobia inoculate, which is a nitrogen fixing bacteria that has a symbiotic relationship with legumes (beans and peas), where the rhyzobia fix nitrogen for the bean plants. They do appreciate some good compost though

      +mark hunt I got these from territorial seed. I'll leave a link. The variety is "orient wonder". I can't speak for other long beans but these took the heat like a champ! We got well over 100 regularly and they were happy plants. They are in the cowpea family (which most thrive in warm weather). I was picking what you saw in the thumbnail of this video every day until spider mites decimated my garden X( I will definitely be growing these again!
