- Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Paul Kossoff Licks From 1970. This lesson is the first of a two-part look at the music of Paul Kossoff and the band Free, as this episode will be followed with a new Chordplay lesson - The Chords Of Free - so stay tuned!
This lesson takes a look at a handful of great blues-rock licks and phrases from the late-great guitar legend Paul Kossoff, and these ideas were taken from various live footage featuring Free performing live in 1970.
The ideas shared in this lesson include plenty of Paul's signature bending/vibrato mastery, as we're hitting some expressive melodic phrasing in this lesson, along with an interesting hybrid-picked b5 blues scale idea, an unusual (for 1970) bluesy sweep picked idea, and a lot more!

Very interesting. Koss still had more extremely good and unique phrases. Let's say this video showed 1/3 of Koss' phrasing. Excellent video.

Great shout out for Paul...great guitarist, great band much underrated. His vibrato at the top of a tone and a half bend is insane, and i strive to be able to do it. For the uniniated check out Paul backed up against a Marshal stack strangling the hell out of his Les Paul playing Mr. Big at the Isle of White in '70.❤

Koss kind of reminds me of a really gritty Peter Green. Those 9s and all the hammers make me really think of PG, who was a super influential player at that time in London.

Damn thank you for this!! Koss is my number one favorite player! This really unlocked some vital stuff for me! I’ve always wondered also how exactly he played that descending triple double stop thing he used to do so much live. There’s like three double stops and another three double stops and ends on I think two slower double stops and a single note vibrato if you know the lick I’m talking about, and he often repeats it but I can never quite get it. And a lot of licks that he did on Tons Of Sobs are still a mystery to me as well. But this helped tons! Was that sweep thing from Free Me? I know a lot of the other stuff is from Mr Big. Hey thank you so much!! I’ve been a fan since the early 90s. So you have no idea how much this means to me! 🙏 great lesson!

Great video. Great guitar player. We lost way too many to drugs and the after effects of drugs. I’m thankful so many made it through and got straight so they could continue to bring us awesome music.
Paul Kossoff has one of my top 3 solos. Free - Moonshine (live) when you TH-cam search it. 9+ minute song but man, the feel he has on that one is killer
Moonshine's solo is one of the most complex to perform. That solo is a phenomenon!
Kossoffs solos were brilliant.
Love the lesson. To me , from wafching Paul play many times in London, i noticed the connection between the style of Freddie King, the bends and heavy vibrato especially.

In fact, I learned a lot of music playing guitar while watching cartoons. Popeye the sailor, the Flintstones, the Jetsons, and a lot of other TV show themes.

So sad what drugs did to Kossoff and some of the greatest rock guitarists. Tommy Bolin was amazing. I was surprised you mentioned him. So talented.
Paul Kossoff was ruined by drug abuse. Another real talent that died way too soon. No one quite gets the Kossoff sound right even today. His mentor Eric Clapton was particularly impressed with the vibrato technique Kossoff used. It would good to back to proper bands and groups and composers rather than machine or computer written and played music with no soul.

Great lesson David. Grew up with Paul's playing. Curious, are you running .010s in standard tuning on the Paul? Seems like fairly slinky action.
Paul was also classically trained .
Some of chords he used were the classical version which can be a long stretch for enhanced sound rather than ease of playing.

Kossoff definitely influenced other guitarists... Angus Young is one of them (you can especially hear it on the earlier AC/DC records), Allen Collins and Gary Rossington were a couple of others,

Back Street Crawler albums are not bad, you can get from chords and licks from them to make a lesson. I like Bernie Marsden solo albums they are hard to find. George Lynch new album Seamless is coming out so you have to make a new George Lynch 2021 lesson, but I know your mind is set on the new Debbie Gibson album coming out on august-20-2021 to bring back memories of the 80's.

Paul Kossoff remains one of the most criminally ignored talents ; the guy has no superior as far as blues rock playing is concerned IMO.
