Nugent is an excellent guitarist. I've seen him several times in the 80s, as well as recently in Phoenix at the Celebrity Theater. He speaks his mind on issues he believes are important--often opposite of the "ruling class" in politics and the entertainment industry. Still love his music! He belongs in the Rock and Roll hall of fame, but they are full of shame and it will not likely happen! 74 years old and still kicking ass!

Derek St Holmes (astoundingly great singer and fine player) and superb drummer Cliff Davies extensively helped Nugent compose the music for the first Ted Nugent album, which is the only reason he became famous. "Hey Baby" is the best composed song on that album, and was its radio hit, entirely composed by Derek. Nugent's very melodic but simple soloing and inventive feedback control would otherwise have continued to be a bar band act, as it had been for long years after his lone sixties hit single with The Amboy Dukes. With his original band of Holmes, Davies and the fine bassist Rob Grange, Nugent was helped to make very good music, and then again years later with the good musicians of Damn Yankees. Otherwise, except for the excellent song "Great White Buffalo" (in its original form, not the rushed mess he turned it into later), all his music is pretty forgettable.

I’ve seen Derek play at least 100 bar gigs in the Atlanta area over the years. You are right about him being the secret weapon. He’s an all around better musician than Ted. He typically doesn’t play as loud and noodle all over the neck, but he has the R&B side nailed. Hasn’t slipped a bit vocally either. Check him out playing most weekends in the Nashville area these days.

When you showed going from E major to A minor I believe Ted is going between the A major and A minor scales.
E major scale is very close to A Major
    E, F# bend to G
    B, C# bend to D
    E is perfect 5th to A
E mixolidian is in the key of A so E major pentatonic to E minor pentatonic = A Blues.
I’m just now grasping how the 5th is related to the root.

Great video Dave! I’m a Detroit native and always been proud Ted is one of ours. It’s interesting to note that when Derek St. Holmes left Nugent’s band during “Free For All,” Nugent brought on some guy named Michael Lee Aday (yep, Meat Loaf a year before “Bat out of Hell” was released) to sing lead vocals. Hey, and don’t worry about the politics stuff. If I truly let a musician’s politics affect me, I would never listen to music again! It’s all about the music, man.

Saw the ‘Nuge twice; once in 84, again in 2000. The 84 show was deafening…. Took days to stop the ringing in my ears….

LOL!! That is a PERFECT way to describe the general feeling for Ted.
"I don't necessarily agree with what comes out of his mouth but I do agree with what comes out of his guitar".

Copped a lot of licks and riffs from the old draft dodger back in the 70’s. He always led with his yap but a lot of 80’s boys took his energy and ran with it. Van Halen killed the blues rock star and anything that isn’t coming out of the Byrdland isn’t real Ted. The combo of the Byrdland and the Dual Showman’s ALL live and on 10 melted a lot of ear wax back in the day. A lot of bands worked their asses off for fame and fortune in the 70’s but I never have believed anything that came out that yap. Always loved Derek St. Holmes.

Ted also hated British anything...he didn't play Marshalls, he played Fenders...he also ran straight into the head early in his career. He may have later added boxes.

If you look at the photo on the back of the Tooth, Fang and Claw album, there's a Marshall head sitting on top of this Twin Reverbs. Not sure why that went away.
Back in about '78, I believe that he used a Marshall combo for practice. A friend bought it from Al Nalli Music in Ann Arbor, MI and they said it was one of Ted's amps.
He pretty much stayed away from pedals until he recorded the song Paralyzed, when he used a Wah-Wah. I remember seeing him during that tour and his tech would run out with the pedal for that song, then come back out and take it away before the next song.
These days (or 2017 was the last time I saw him), he had a pedal board, but don't recall him using anything other than possibly the Wah.

Ted, Derek, Rob and Cliff in their time could go toe to toe with any band in the studio or on stage.

I also saw Ted open for Kiss at 2 shows in south Florida, 1 or 2 days apart during the reunion tour. They were a steamroller of energy !
It was exhausting watching Ted's bass player keep up with the "Ted" ! Not to mention KISS was 100% outstanding during those 2 shows. One was in Ft. Lauderdale area, the other was somewhere south of Bradenton area. KISS had 2 technical problems during the 2nd show, but the first one was flawless . Love Ted, both his music and his unfiltered opinions. I wish I had HD videos of those two shows ! I mean "wow" ! It was like being 14 again ! :) Great video !

Ted's 2K albums are extremely underrated. In fact, I'd put 2002's Craveman and 2014's Shut Up & Jam amongst the top albums of his discography. Check out "Rawdogs & Warhogs", "Change My Sex", "I Won't Go Away", "Do-Rags & A 45", "Screaming Eagles", "Still Raising Hell" and "Stand" for some kick ass Nuge tracks from the 2000s.

When Double Live Gonzo came out I was stationed on Diego Garcia. We binged on that album while knocking back massive quantities of Jack Daniels. Ted was a wild one back then. Many years later I met Derek St. Holmes when he was doing meet and greets with Paul Reed Smith. That was an interesting dynamic. Thanks for the lessons. I’ll be trying some of that this week.

Seeing Ted on stage in Halifax N.S. in the mid 70's was crazy. Ted, dressed in a loin cloth, swinging from a mile high stack of amps across the stage WAS rock and roll. Wango Tango. Wango Tango indeed.

But Ted's Playing Has And Always Will Be The Best Even At The Age Of 75 He Still Play's Better Then Most Of These Young Boy's On His Worst Day's 😂😅 Ted Nugent is Definitely The Most Underrated Guitarist Because He Don't Take No 💩 From Nobody And Specially The Biggest Crime Gang The United State Government ! TED NUGENT FOREVER. !!! ❤❤❤

I agree with what comes out of his mouth and his guitar. Saw Ted in Des Moines Iowa twice, Cat Scratch tour and Wango Tango, he was at his height and must of been 77-78 and 1980 when I was 15 16 years old. Magic. By the way, you are a great presenter and guitarist. Love Late Night Lessons! I learn a lot here even at 61.

Byrdlands are hollowbody, not semi-hollow. For a while in the 80's, Ted played Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion guitars, which are semihollow.

David, you're guitar tone sounds exceptionally good on this video. Super punchy and clear. BTW I grew up and owned all those Ted albums on vinyl. Ted, his band and record Producers are a huge influence on me. I don't agree with his politics, but there's something about Ted I'll always love. He's like an eccentric uncle.

The two albums that preceeded Ted Nugent (Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes: Call of the Wild and Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes: Tooth, Fang and Claw) are among my all-time favorites. Great songs, great guitar work and awesome Bass-Drum cooperation!
And no one should waste their time listening to Intensities in Ten Cities. Horrible, horrible album. His '95 Spirit of the Wild album is pretty good too.

I don’t understand what is controversial about god family and and a love of the 🇺🇸 Ted sounds great now and is a testament to clean and sober living. The world needs more Ted Nugents. You said you did not want to talk about “it” but you did.
