Part of what makes the movie is just how minimalistic it is. The use of the ruins as a main set piece, and not attempting to have and insane amount of people, keeping the whole production very tight like a cast of players was a stroke of genius. It really keeps the stage or performance element intact that can so often be lost when a musical is put to film
And to characteristically explain why there aren't so many people, the film establishes from the beginning that the whole movie is basically a passion play performed by this bus load of modern day(70s) performers in an Israeli desert! It not only helps explain the lack of people, but establishes a precedent with how the show/album can be described as one of the critical means people back then were trying to re access how the public viewed The Christian Bible and religion as a whole. Within the same year the album came out, 1970, you also had Godspell by Stephen Schwarts playing on Broadway, which the public lashed at for it's own attempts at letting the young people of that time develop their own perception of Jesus(as more of a joyous friend to follow, rather than a deity that must be obeyed), when the older generation would rather they stick to "following what the Bible preaches(which is basically THEIR interpretation of it, which many of the younger generation probably saw as two faced with how those in power were willing to continue the then raging Vietnam War "in God's name")". With all this context in mind, for me, this really feels like watching a time capsule for how those of the younger generation tried to respond to the time period they were living in(as with the modern day references and symbols the several anachronistic lyrics in the show were trying to convey), and helps paint a comparison to what we now face in today’s society(War in Afghanistan, over commodification of political movements and basic necessities for survival, racism in general (both personal and systemic) that hasn’t changed too much in it’s ugliness and influence on the populace as most would like to think, etc.)! :)
@@joseantonioguerreromartine3183 I believe so. The main ruin structures were in Avdat, Israel and at the Herodium fortresses. Cave scenes filmed in Beit Guvrin, Israel in the Bell Caves.
Look at Pilate, right after he says "You're Herod's case". He changes expression, looks like he recognizes in Jesus the man who was in his dream. And the way he turns his back at Jesus, his expression, the way he walks away, is so: "Oh no...it cannot be". He actually realizes that his nightmare 's gonna come true.
Also Pilate's wife, while she has not lines to tell, has a very impressive expression on her face and in her eyes, while she looks at her husband and at Jesus. Very beautiful and good actress. We understand that she cannot speak or act in that matter, but if she could...
Honestly my favorite version of Pilate. Barry really brings out the humans side of him. I seen many versions of JCS and everyone else tries too hard to make him intimidating and seems to dehumanize him. tbh whole cast is great.
He certainly captured the British interpretation of how the Romans spoke and behaved. I agree, out of all the actors I've seen in this role, Barry's portrayal is not only the most memorable, but also the best.
Actually the 2000 version managed to paint Pilate as a man trying hard to fulfill his role as intimidating and showing how deeply conflicted he was in a manner which is frankly impressive

I love how his intonation and facial expressions perfectly compliment each other and enphasize every emotion he feels. You can see him start with curiosity, wondering who is this man, and than a curious amusement of "so this is Jesus Christ", finally seeing the man everyone is talking about. He follows it up with mocking disdain "You look so small, not a king at all". Than, when Jesus says "Your words, not mine", you can see the anger in his face and tone when Pilate says "What do you mean by that?", followed by a certain amusement when he says "You're deep in trouble friend", like he is trying to figure out how can Jesus be so calm in his situation, kind of wondering whether Jesus really understands his situation. Than he goes back to a mocking disdain when he says "Someon Christ, king of the Jews", but now he is more aggressive in his tone. FInaly, he goes back to anger, but now with some added spite and mockery when he says "Since you come from the Galilee, than you need not come to me. You're Herod's race. You're Herod's case." you can feel his spite and anger especially form the "come to me" to "you're Herod's case". And he ends it by having a shocked and scared expression, as he stares Jesus in the eye and recognizes the Galilean from his dream. He is so surprised and gets so frightened by the memory of his dream he immediately turns around and goes away, he doesn't want to spend any more time near Jesus. It's just a brilliant scene and a masterclass in acting.
The path to walk up to the very top of where Pilate was standing was so crumbly and so unstable that Barry Dennen was thrown over the shoulder of the key grip and carried up. This movie, Dark Side of the Moon, Selling England by the Pound, Phantom of the Paradise, everything perfect about 1973 I've always said. Can't fault that list.
Everything about this scene is an understated emphasis on just how powerful the Roman occupation must have been. In the opening the Romans are almost inaccessibly out of reach, and Pilate has to descend from on high just to even carry on a conversation. The part that really gets it across, however, is at 1:29. The expression on the woman's face when Jesus gives Pilate the wrong answer says it all.
Well the Romans who aren't Romans are wielding machine guns, and Pilate, the Fifth Prefect under Emperor Tiberius, apparently lives on the side of a mountain and thinks a cliff side is a hallway.
All of these questions are answered at the start of the movie, when a bunch of 70s actors arrive on location in a "modern" bus and start loading all the props and costumes that will later become relevant, in one of the greatest Chechov's Guns ever to be seen.

I would call this HD
The power of Rome sounds
Man, even 2000 years ago a dude could get caught up in red tape.
I can see like a dozen OSHA violations in his "hallway". Pilate has bigger issues than Christ...
"You look so small not a king at all"
Jesus: "Right back at you."
Every Pilate always has a very distinctive face
Ben Daniels fans take note: THIS is how you portray Pilate in JCS!
By THIS you mean like a whiny, frightened brat with a superiority complex and a good singing vioce? XD I mean, sure this is the template, but this Pilate grated on my nerves even when I watched it for the first time. Matter of taste, I suppose.
Jeff Webster They both just had a different interpretation of the character. Just two different styles. I like both of them.
Polly Pockets I couldn't agree more. These characters had had so many interpretations over the years, we are lucky to be able to pick our favourite one. Though none of them is artistically worse than the other :)
This Pilate makes me think of Severus Snape
Anyone who agrees?
In a sense, you have a point there.
This and the 2000 version are brilliant. This for the subtleties of gesture and that for the harshness of the ends of some of the sentences. Now imagine if both were done together.
Now someone needs to give the costume designer a slap here as maroon is NOT purple.
Wow, the widest wide screen I've ever seen.
I think i Read somewhere where they cut in with Tanks, The Jets and the Machine Guns its was a statement of the On going Turmoil of the Region as stated early in the movie by Jesus.
Are you king? King of the jews!!!!!! I love how he sings that, reminds me of Geddy Lee
Pilots voice when he gets passionate tho ! ❤
I finally found the song jack and the bean song ripped off
What is this?
Jeremy Salkeld the 1974 version of jack and the beanstalk has a song that is just a straight up parody
For anyone curious, it's on TH-cam:

Barry Dennen dated barbara streisand in the 70s
Badass pilot.
Actually, according to the 3D sculpture made from the image on Shroud of Turin, Jesus was said to be at least 6 ft tall and quite regal looking compared to how most other men appeared there in those days! (@ at 1:08 to 1:20)
The Shroud's authenticity is still controversial. Plus, IIRC there was a prophecy in the Old Testament saying the Messiah would be dull looking, a rather common face that would not draw attention. Almost nothing is known about Jesus' appearance.
