    Really, I've stopped rolling my eyes when I've faced the lame way that my Ryzen CPU and Nvidia GPU couldn't decode H265. And now I am ditching my PC to get the Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM.

    This is definitely what Im looking to upgrade to from the non studio m1 mac mini. Its been a great machine overall but I just need more power since im utilizing a lot more overlays in my videos now.

      Same here. I was waiting for the back-to-school sales for the M2 Mac Mini as it appears better than the M1 Studio - but the M2 Max Studio seems to be in the sweet spot. Still going to wait until the Fall and take in more reviews

    This is the machine I ordered except with more SSD. I really wanted 8TB of SSD because I’m shooting in mostly Apple ProRes now. I know I can add external SSD but for really good ones (that can keep up with this Mac Studio) it tends to get pricey.. not AS pricey as the onboard SSD but I really just wanted all that space to not have to worry about it. So I’m VERY excited to see your first-look here as it makes me feel good about my purchase since it won’t arrive for a couple of more weeks. I’m selling my first-gen Studio Mac Max mainly for the extra SSD that I now need but the first one has been an absolute beast as well. For my budget I could have got a lower-end Ultra with 4TB SSD, or the fully maxed out Max like I ended up ordering at $5399. I’m actually still struggling with the decision but your video is making me feel like I made the best choice. Thank you! Love your videos. It was also a shock to see you on MacBreak Weekly (in a good way)! I hope to see you again there.

    • @ChrisLawley
      @ChrisLawley  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Totally get it! If I was shooting ProRes I would do the same thing. The reason these machines are so fast is because the storage is on the same chip as the CPU, GPU, and RAM. I tell everyone to get as much internal storage as they can and not to rely on external drives because that is where the speed some from.

    I'm still on a 2019 16" MBP and it can handle most of what I do but sometimes it slows down and the fans scream. I'm looking forward to having a machine that can just do what I need it to do.

    I got this exact machine a couple of months ago, and I LOVE it. My 2017 intel imac was maxing out all processors and acting like it was on a dialup connection - now I think it was just a dirty fan and my not understanding the system's response to overheating. I couldn't wait for a possible giant M2 or M3 iMac, and so I got a 32" monitor instead. But no regrets, someone wants my intel iMac, right??

    As a 3D games artist I would like to see some Unreal Engine work as well as the software you mentioned pertaining to 3d work. I tried the M1 Max Mac Studio and it was not good with UE, but that was before native apple silicon update. Nice video, thank you!

    so I guess I dont need to spend $4000 for the Mac Studio Ultra. I think I will wait for the M3 Max to come out. I think they are gonna have trouble shrinking the cpu past 3nm. Although IBM has had a 3nm prototype CPU since 2018.

    17:07 This is how I feel about the new lineups. The decoy effect will get you spending more money.
    I want the 15-inch MacBook Air but the base model isn’t enough.
    I will never buy a laptop in 2023 with 8GB of RAM. When I upgrade the RAM and storage, I’m looking at a 14-inch M2 Pro MBP, not including the refurbished models and that machine is a beast.

    • @chidorirasenganz

      The Air series is more about portability. So I wouldn’t consider them the same. And if you’re upgrading the specs the prices aren’t comparable.

    mostof what people do is H.265 and most is 1080p you also cant edit 8k on a 4 or 5k screen realistly because you cant see it if your screen can not produce it so 4k and perhaps 6k on a 5 k screen and a 6k screen can eaisly handel 6k how ever 6k on a 5k tho little difference at all a 5k screen can handel just fine , you wont max your ram when you have 96 gigs unnless your doing one hell of a huge project with the right editor that would be a huge hog..

    No, you cant hear the fan in OG studio (Max with 32 gigs), you can hear it if you come close to it, night at 2 AM.
    At default rpm it is what, 2k rpm? that ain't auditable in any normal environment.
    And i never heard it spinning up to actually hear it, even when doing some gaming, always cool and quiet.

    Hi thanks for this video, its really helpful. I am considering buying the m2 max for heavy photoshop work - concept art for film/games, and also photo retouching on large files. Is the m2 max the right option for this? Most reviews discuss performance for video editing, and dont mention performance with regards to painting in photoshop with wet / mixer brushes on files with lots of layers. Is the m2 max good for this? I dont wanna spend loads on a m2 ultra if the m2 max is all i need.

    Hey thanks for this video. You are one of the few reviewing the Max. Everyone is focused on the Ultra, but I just don't know which one is better for me.
    My use case: daily 4k video editing, some After Effects. Plenty of color grading, often muliticam (sony a7siii footage). I live in front of my computer editing video, audio, photos, and lots of gif-making and so forth. But I still don't think the Ultra is going to buy me any more performance than the Max.
    Right now I have a MBP M1 16" Pro. It is the fastest machine I've used, and it's great. I still like faster export times, and more headroom for graphics work in AE and FCP.
    Do you think it is worth upgrading to the Max? Do you think stretching to the Ultra makes sense?

    • @chrisidoestech
      @chrisidoestech ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, here's my 2 cents on this:
      It is worth upgrading from M1 Pro to M2 Max? Depends on your use case, if you don't mind having a desktop that is stationary, the improved cooling in the Ultra will help you with the sustained load. If portability is still a deciding factor for you, would definitely say to stick to the Macbook. It also depends on your ram configuration, 32gb I think should be minimum for this.
      Is it worth upgrading from M2 Max to M2 Ultra? Probably not, especially if you have to stretch your budget, but for 99% of the users, the Max is enough. Even the Ultra struggles with the Noise Reduction effect on Resolve, so most of the time, the Ultra will give you faster export time, but do you mind waiting an extra 2 minutes for an export that is already really fast? I wouldn't honestly 😁 I think either the base model of M2 Max Studio or Base Model with upgraded ram to 64 would be very good. In regards to the storage I wouldn't upgrade honestly, it is very expensive. I would buy a Thunderbolt enclosure which can be found for around $100 and a good 2tb SSD for roughly $150, meaning that you get 2.5 Tb for $250 ish instead of 1tb for $200.
      Cheers!

    It always annoys me when people get annoyed about video editing tests. This machine is not exclusively built for that, but it is purpose built for video editing. It has built in video encoders. One of the main selling points of this machine is video editing ability. It can also do really well at all the other things. And this computer highlights the point that “video editing used to be a stress test” which highlights that this is a video editing machine. Anyway, rant over…
    But I do understand a lot of people want to know their specific needs highlighted and only see export times. And I had that issue with no one ever testing after effects ironically. But us video editors do still need to know if it actually does what it says it does…

      It may not be the fault of any one tuber but there’s a lack of diversity in content on Apple silicon computers, each almost the same as any other. Yes 4K maybe demanding & if you use multiple 4K then maybe it’s good to know. Yes it maybe for their audience & business ,but many tech tubers don’t work like anyone one pro or not that I’ve met. For such pro or not this is a lot of money & their annoyance is understandable, like many pros still using 1080 do I really need a studio or will the pro do. Given Apple pricing structure, upsell step ladder it’s harder than ever to get it right & I get annoyed at another video to the 1% club, really 0.1% club too!

      @@JohnSmith-zl8rz Yeah that’s definitely a good setup too. Recently I’ve been trying out a horizontal and a vertical on the side. You just don’t have that type of aspect ratio flexibility with a single larger display. And it’s been a game changer to have a dedicated pdf reader and website scrolling display. Having 27 inches of vertical real estate as well as a 27 inch horizontal primary display opens up some interesting possibilities for certain workflows. Especially if you work with lots of text.

    Instead of restoring from TimeMachine, you should have gone from your old Mac (if you still had it) to the new one using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Up to 4X faster than 10Gbps ethernet. And 4K is not stressful for any higher-end modern computer, even ones without a hardware codec. 8K is stressful.
