After 8 years this tutorial still holds up, thanks men, great stuff!
That movie inspired me a lot since 2002 when I saw it.
For anyone using Maya 2016 or above i have managed to get around the issues causing problems.
When rebuilding the Surface, Make sure click the Box to choose what options you want. Select the option "Reduce" this will hopefully set the u and v range to 1. (Done many tries with fail this is the only way to get it as form U needs to be "Open" and form v "Periodic").
For the emitters. Under the nParticles menu (under FX drop down) select Create Emitter (Under Emit section) for the correct emitters.
When you create the fluid, in the outliner select fluid and expand it. Delete the emitter under fluid as this will create fluid to be emitter from the middle which isn't needed.
LadyGrace2 thanks so much
Unique Example , that is worth to try it. had amazing results and know how to get to the point.
Many thanks to you.
Hey, for anyone having issues with resolution and it being low res for maya 2017/2018 users its because you have not put your base resolution up which can be found in your container properties in your fluidshape. I recommend putting them up in stages the default is 10 so therefore i would recommend going to 20 and then 40 etc etc this makes sure that the simulation doesn't freak out. When you put your base resolution up keep in mind that you must cache it in order for it to take effect other wise it will just look smaller and weird.
I did cache but it still freaked out and my fluids stopped working.
Easiest sub of my life!
Amazing Tutorial!
I'm trying to figure out how to do this in maya 2017. Can't get mine to be close to this at all.
I'm trying to follow this, using Maya 2019, but the particle are flowing in the opposite direction than his at 10:27. Help?
Hi guys - if you are having problems with the first few steps in this when setting up the nurbs revolve and rebuild - just adjust your creation expression accordingly. So for instance if your surface is Min Max Range U 1.000 and your Min Max Range V is 9.000 (or whatever number) then change your creation expression rand to (0,9) that way your particles use the range of 0-9.
Hope that helps
Or if you want to use a poly object instead of nurbs do all the same expressions up to the creation expression but dont do the after run time expression - instead get your fluid going then put a little twist deformer on your particle.
Thank you so much. Do you have any tips on animating the effect? I’m trying to make my own tornado in maya 17 and I want to animate it so that it moves from one place to another but I don’t know how to . Also, for some reason, I’ve gone through every step in this tutorial but my tornado looks quite low resolution compared to his, for some reason. Do you have any suggestions why that is?
Thanksss for everything! that's a nice tuto, I learned a lot :)
Thank you very good job, buy that pizza my simulation can out like yours jajajaja!
Did you have many caches ready? If you're playing from filecache, you cannot change attributes like damp, etc. ? Not sure am I right but can you explain plz. Cool tutorial you did btw :)
You are the man ... mind if u doing some VFX or fire simulation in Maya ... thanks again for the amazing tutorial man
Doing in 2016 version, so when I add that curve and spiral thing, the fluid gets the shape of it, Not the lofted curve. @29:20
How do I flip the Fluidaxisfield? On The video you said yours was perfect and went in the direction of your tornado. Mine is going in the opposite direction, and clues on how to flip it?
How to add particles2,particles1, and 3d container in Maya 2018 ? I'm adding those three to emit from object in 3d container option box but they are unable to combine
Thank you for this tutorial. I've been waiting for one like this. The previous ones were too fast and you did a great job going step by step. One question, after creating the tornado can you export to a video? do you export it as a png file? thanks!
You have to do a batch render, which renders each individual frame and can take a very long time depending on the amount of frames, then put it into a compositing program such as After Effects or Premier
Pls help. I got this error when at 17:00 creating 3d container // Error: file: /Applications/Autodesk/maya2018/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/AETemplates/AEfluidAttrTemplate.mel line 459: Cannot convert data of type int[] to type float[].
thank you so much
Hello Sir, thanks for the great tutorial. I am facing an issue when i start to emit fluid from the nparticle. At 17:17 you get a cloudy wispy tornado whereas i get no gaseous effect. I get a stiff structure with no gaseous feel. Looks more like ropes forming. Can u help me out?
Could you help me in rotating the particles. I am using maya 2018
why it makes so different result between yours and mine. no dusty and no gradient color
Hi, Thank you for this tutorial.
I am using Maya 2016 and at 7:30 the per particle attributes gives me this error message "Warning: line 0: Name 'goalU' of new attribute clashes with an existing attribute of node 'nParticleShape1'. //
// Error: line 0: Found no valid items to add the attribute to. // "
goalU and goalV wont get added at all, any idea what i am doing wrong?
If you are still wanting to try it i have posted a comment for this video to get it to work for 2016
try close maya and open, then try again. I had same expression problem. but after I closed maya and opened again, it worked fine.
Excuse me, I have a problem with the fluid. Everytime I try to emit it to the particles, I can't make it work.
Hi which hardware you use for this ?
This tutorial is nice but it has the same problem of the very fast one with no sound. The source particles turn around the Nurbs shape at the same speed, actually, even worse, the particles along the funnel go slower than the particles around the wide area. This should be completely the opposite: they should go slow the more they get far from the funnel and superfast inside. The resulting tornado in this case looks nice but do not sell the big scale that it is supposed to have. It looks like a miniature. I thought the curve volume axis was there to do the job but You can not see any contribute from that force Field.
thankyou, and how can i rendering it in the best resolution for 1080p?
What does "Volume" do though?
at what time we saw the life of the tornado cuz I need more fotograms
Why did you rotate the fluid container 90deg ?
because of auto resize .
when i take a big cylinder with 23 scale and and make it emitter .and then open fluid shape on autoresize .i found fluid appear suddenly when you rotate fluid container it come smoothly
When I get to 23 minutes on the tutorial my tornado starts going upwards (when I play the animation). Also, the tornado does not rotate 360 degrees, instead it goes down on a spiral shape. Another thing, is when I tried to turn my fluid container 90 degrees, my fluid also turned 90 degrees (different from the tutorial, where only the container gets turned 90 degrees). I am using Maya 2017. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thank you.
hey!did u find a solution yet?im using maya 2018 and ive got the same error here.....
I have maya 2017. Can I follow this tutorial anyway??
For the most part yes but you might see some changes from Maya 2017 and 2016 that might have you sratching your head for a bit when trying to follow the tutorial.
Hi guys! I do want to make this toutorial but i dont have Dynamic and ndynamic in my Maya 2016. SOS help me. I am a new user on that kinds of programms! Thanks
In top left corner under the 'File' you should have a 'scroll' options, you have to change to 'FX' to see what you need
Nothing opens when I click for the options on rebuild. Anyone know why that is?
Nvm i Found on forum why. Incase someone else has a prob.. "go to your prefs and uncheck "remember size and positon" - restart maya - done."
Thank you for share this man. The tornado is amazing. At 10:17- Using Wireframe Mode and "Viewport 2.0" some of my particles are stuck in a part of the funnel(if I hide one particle from outliner the visible particle looks normal as your video) .. do you know how can I fix this?
may be u do wrong in goal u
PLZ Help!!!! I can't click right mouse button in Goal V! of Per Particle Attributes tab because I don't know!!!!! T_T Help!!
In your Outliner, if your particle icon is brown, it won't work. create another (2nd) one and it will be green. That has working click. Then create 3rd for 2nd particle. Which means you need 3 particle efx. And just delete 1st created.
How do I render this to composite in After Effects?
go in render and use batch render
tornado is OK, but there are particles in 0,0,0 forever, why?
when u create a 3d container in versions newer than maya 2015.....by default it creates an emitter....maybe the emitter wasnt deleted......
16:15
Hey there, I have a strange problem with the tutorial. When I play the bit when one particle system is going from top and another from bottom, I see few particles in the middle - they are not moving down or up, just spinning. I tried to figure out whats going on, but the bug is still there.
Do you know what wrong with it ? here is the link to the picture: s24.postimg.org/7j7o7tjj9/aaa.png
Thanks
i had the same problem and here is how to fix it: when you select you nparticle1 to create a 3d container: select the box next to the 'create 3d container' to open options then uncheck the 'add emitter' then hit apply. that will fix the problem
I am trying to follow along in maya 2016. However, things look different on my end. First the particles are white, not blue and green. Second, they do not change size when I raise the particle radius to 1. I thought this was just a difference in display since I am using a newer version. However, when I add the fluids, mine does not look right. Do different steps need to be taken on the newer version?
+Michael Bird same for me. Did you ever find out how to change this?
No I have not
+Michael Bird I think you should use nDynamics ,not Dynamics.
There is no Dynamics in 2016....only an FX tab
If you are still wanting to try it i have posted a comment for this video to get it to work for 2016

I'm new to maya and i followed every step you did pretty clearly.. But the problem is my tornado looks like very very VERY low resolution. I cranked up the fluid resolution upto 5000 and it had literally no effect at all. And even when i imported a model, the resolution looked low when i rendered it. Is there someplace else i could increase the resolution?? Is there someplace i could increase the resolution for the scene?? I have a decent CPU and GPU so thats not the problem.. Please help.. I've attached the examples..

TheBigBang Studios I have the exact same problem. And I’m also working with maya 17. If you find or found a solution please let me know
