  • I'm exploring the beautiful beaches of the Golden Mile in Durban South Africa on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. .
It is one of the main tourist attractions in the Durban area. The wide stretch of golden sands, artificially separated by various piers, provides excellent opportunities for sun-worshippers and swimmers to enjoy the sub-tropical sunshine and warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Most of the Mile's beaches are protected year-round by lifeguards and shark nets. The Mile is also a well-known surfer's haven. The South Beach end, in particular, is well known as a safe beach for neophyte surfers. The beachfront properties are a mix of residential apartments and tourist hotels, development of which boomed in the 1970s, although remnants of Durban's art-deco architecture are still evident. Interspersed among the beachfront properties are several popular restaurants and nightclubs.

This video was filmed a few weeks ago so I think this is the norm for a weekend. The bunny chow looked tempting but I'm not a heavy bread person. so I had to pass on it.

The people who historically has the money (you know who I mean), have decided to leave this part of Durban to the majority. They do not invest there. They only invest in Umhlanga, where you will find some of the finest hotels in the area. The strange thing is that the best beaches are in the CBD area, while at the uppity posh area the beach is mostly rocks, and the area is not flat, so it is quite a challenge for old people.

I agree the beaches are beautiful which surprised me that they were relatively empty. I guess it's somewhat a blessing and a curse. If they truly invest there, people are going to be displaced. There's no way they are going to invest millions of dollars where people live way below the poverty line and let them continue to stay there. On the other hand, without the investment, people who are living there now can continue to stay and enjoy beach front views without the threat of being displaced.

@@NomadicJayye2021 yes they are, but those lifeguards save many lives. Take a look at this. This, is an old video though, and this could have changed, am not sure. Over the festive season we have thousands flocking the beaches. Holidays like Easter or school breaks is when the beachfront is packed to capacity. The recent unrest in July two years ago, has also changed the landscape of the tourism industry in Durban. Lots of crime in its wake, so people stay away until the situation changes. I walked that mile twice a week so I am very sad when I talk about my beautiful city. I am a Durbanite.

@@NomadicJayye2021 those buildings are not well run, almost slum like and run by slum lords. I feel the municipality needs to by the properties from the landlords (using tax monies) and build for the sake of SAn tourism.
