STOP MAKING ME WANT AN ANALOG HEAT. It sounds really good on vocals... I guess it totally should, but this is the first time I've heard a good clear demo. I really, really love the lower distortion settings (clean boost and the next). Really dope.
Ha ha.. Sorrryyy! Yeah the first two are very nice. The "Saturation" has this hollow kind of quality to it.. I don't know how to describe it. And for making nasty bity vocals I think the ones on the right are actually great too. With Overbridge I think you should be able to record the clean and processed signals simultaneously.
That's really, really cool. Distortion/saturation is so important for vocals, even if it's just a light dusting. I still think a Heat would pair super well with the Digitakt, too. :)
For those who don't want to buy a cloud lifter for their SM7B, I've been using a Fethead by Triton audio. They're about $100 and seem to get the job done, plus they only require 1 xlr cable
...been buying and selling gear for quite some time now. Dynamic mics require close mic placement which picks up detail but causes honkiness in a vocal. Condenser mics can capture more detail at further distances and further distances means less proximity effect and less honkiness. Great video, great insight from a great artist. Thank you.
cuckoomusic glad you made this one, my first thought after this device was announced was, 🤔I wonder how it sounds on a vocal, and here we are. Sounds excellent!
Very resourceful perspective. With a Rode NT1A you will have more presence in the upper mids and highs. Also, please consider buying a basic plugin EQ, if your DAW doesn't already provide one. I should also mention, while distortion may not sound ideal for vocals, mixers actually tend to blend in subtle amounts of distortion to help a vocal stand out in the mix. You're not alone!
Oh nevermind then! Fabfilter is so awesome, I only have their EQ so far but I really want to get all their stuff someday. Best of luck man. Save up for that condenser mic!!!
I always thought your vocals sound great. I love my akg condenser microphone. It's pretty much the same mic used for broadcasting. When I got my soundcraft signature 10. I noticed my vocal dynamics got more overall presents. Only thing that sucks is when I add a few analog gear. I get unwanted white noise (more and less to me overdriving signals to get distinctive drums). I usually add a pitch of reverb when I'm done recording artist in the studio anyways.
appreciate the vid, thanks! you think this could be achieved by using the analog heat as a plugin? routing the input to another channel where heat sits?
Pretty late comment here but I just wanted to say fuck you for not only being amazing at LITERALLY everything you do... BUT APPARENTLY ALSO SINGING. Love you man
Thank you for all of your consistently enjoyable and informative content. Cuckoo sir, I noticed that you did not use the TC Helicon T1 voicetone pedal that I maybe heard in one of your live performance videos and I was wondering how the T1 compared to something like the Auteur or the CL-1.
+Jack Funk thanks mate! The T1 is really not that great if you're doing recordings. But it serves a purpose live, for setting up a mic easily without any extra gear or thought, if you're a low budget touring one-man-show. It's handy if you don't have a sound engineer or the required gear.. but in any situation where you want the best sound, the T1 is basically... 💩... 🙈
Yeah.. I wanna sing like MJ, that's why I bought it ;-) I took the windscreen off to get a crisper sound. There's a noticeable difference. A producer friend of mine told me.
Literally anything 150$ or more sounds fine as long as they're by a nice company such as Audio Technica, Rode, AKG, Blue, Shure, Neumann.. I would avoid MXL, they just look fishy. it just depends what your price range is, I like Audio Technicas AT2035 myself as someone always on a budget but you might like Slate Digitals Virtual Microphone System and all it's cool quirks but i see you dont like digital too much and you're more into analog so maybe you just need something like the Art Pro VLA II and a stereo reverb unit to run some of your stuff through! vocals need reverb and delay to give them that extra sparkle!
I recommend going to a music store and trying out as many different mics as you can. It is a very personal and subjective thing, and you need to figure out what works best with your voice. I went in thinking I wanted an AKG 414, but discovered that I hated the sound of it on my voice. The cheapest thing I found that worked for me was a Neumann TLM103, which has a very bright, breathy sound that suited my voice. Also, I have a SM7B at my job, and although it is great for voiceover work, I would never use it for singing. But you knew that already.
What do you wanna do with the vocals? I'm generally OK with sampling, but I wanna know what it is, and also make sure to credit me and put some links to my channel.

Thank you so much! I've been meaning to make this video ever since the Heat came out. Glad I finally got around and did it :)

The head move was epic at the beginning ❤❤
That round fuzz preset on the elektron sounded HOT
Yeah, it's a really special one.
Love your vibe man... ace ! You truly inspire !
Thanks mate!
You have a great ear, man. Knowing what to do with the gear you have- that's what really counts isn't it!
love your intros + selfmade sound effects. Makes me laugh every time!
Haha, happy to hear that! Bzzzzshhwwwt!
I still haven't gotten a pre-amp for my SM7b myself!

Thanks mate! I'm using FabFilter's EQ, Compressor, Limiter, Multiband, Reverb. I think they're fab!
Oh nevermind then! Fabfilter is so awesome, I only have their EQ so far but I really want to get all their stuff someday. Best of luck man. Save up for that condenser mic!!!
+Tom Casey Music thanks! Fab EQ is gold!
I have the new Heat and watching your vids it's really great... and a pleasure, thank you!

oh my gosh finally! i'd been waiting for someone to do this :D thank you sir
still need the cloudlifter with this? I like the saturation.
is the compressor analog as well? does it have a limiter too?
Great vid Cuckoo really helpful. Nice tan by the way.
+lapareddesonido he he, thanks. Sunny days in Sweden and Norway this summer.

+Fena Kazy thanks.. I guess ❤️🙈
'Saturation' was the best mode for my taste..
Good to hear you sing! What pop filter did you use exactly? Thank you!

How is the conversion on this as an interface? Is the latency ok?
love your life dudebro
Why do you take the windscreen off the mic? Also that is supposed to be the mic Michael Jackson used on thriller.
Yeah.. I wanna sing like MJ, that's why I bought it ;-) I took the windscreen off to get a crisper sound. There's a noticeable difference. A producer friend of mine told me.
cuckoomusic you sounded good!
I also own that mic and use it on my vocals for the same reason.
Are you using the limiter in the h6?
You are so high 💨
i thought i was watching encino man for a min lol
rough crunch thoooooo
Thick n creamy
kingofspraycheese I just got to that part😂
1:37
Sounds like you just need a large diaphragm condenser mic
Would you care to recommend me one?
Cheap- Rhode NT1A
More expensive- AKG 414
Rode k2. It's the mic the postal service used. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/K2Tube

Dude you need to test it on more extreme values please
hey is it OK if I use your vocals from this video?
