Thank you for having me, Emily & Russ! I'm so inspired by you both. Thank you for the time and energy you pour into your work
What the heck is that phone mic! I love it!
Love how the lyrics reflected mundane phone conversations too, matching the feelings we associate with that tone.
It’s got such a hollow crisp sound, despite also clearly getting some proximity effect. Really cool.
Do you hear yourself through it while recording like on a real landline?
You have a beautiful voice. Some of the effects definitely remind me of some of James Blake's vocals. Subscribed!
This was awesome! Thanks for sharing!
So cool to see you both team up! Much love!
And thank you for sharing what you do with all of us!
I would have never dreamed i would be liking music like this. All because i was fascinated by guitar pedals and a harp. I'm 56 and have always been into hard rock so this is all really new and interesting. Thanks for having her on.
thank you so much for being here with us ♡ :) I'm so glad we could help you discover a different kind of music you enjoy; that means so much to me!!
I relate with this so much well said my man
I'm 67 and I feel the same way.
Classic rock background to this is pretty crazy, but I'm definitely diggin it!
I was recently listening to some Bulgarian choir and was floored by how metal they sounded😮😱🤯🤟 I've found the same of some traditional Japanese music
I wholeheartedly believe one of the biggest disservices one can do to themselves is to convince themselves they don’t like certain kinds of music. there is so much value in everything when it comes to music. i’m glad to hear you’re starting to broaden your horizons.
Never thought about using effects pedals when singing but that young lady is fantastic! Thank you for having her on Emily!
thank you for watching!! ♡ :)
they get used a lot but it's not always noticeable. Chaney from Entheos used to make her voice sound like an alien goblin lol
There are pedals made specifically for vocalists, too.
She makes it look easy, but that's like mastering multiple instruments at once. Your collab sounds awesome! 😍
Thank you so much!! 🥰 it was so incredible to watch her perform live!!
For real, how does one of the best vocalists I've ever heard fly under the radar until this point in my life? Thank you for bringing her to our attention!
How do you know? You can't even hear her real voice....lol.
@@Cjeska There's plenty of Bent Knee songs with vocal segments that are raw, she's incredibly talented.
Her voice is incredible, what a showcase, thanks for sharing her on your platform, going to check her music out and that EP!
You are in for an absolute treat, mon frere
You’ve GOTTA hear “Shiny Eyed Babies”. Bent Knee’s whole discography is brilliant, but that album… it changed my life. Hangs on my wall. I’m wearing the shirt right now, coincidentally. Okay, I’m a superfan, so take my word for it!
Let's be honest.. doing falsetto "ooohs" with a ton of reverb and modulation every voice sounds incredible and "angelic". Me personally i found it quite boring, my opinion, i hope nobody gets offended
This absolutely blows my mind dude. I had no idea you could convert a voice signal to an instrument signal and then modify it using pedals. It's such a cool idea and Courtney does such a great job explaining her process and pedals she uses to create these amazing sounds. It's just really really cool. Thank you for sharing this with all of us!
singing through an old school telephone is kinda genius. I love this collab! You both rock!!
Thanks so much! It’s a cool mic from a company called Trash Talk Audio that I have in my studio just for fun!
I remember the phone from a previous video where another really talented friend recorded vocals for you.
@@hrdcpy yes!! Juliana Chahayed!
In the age of autotune it is so refreshing to hear a vocalist whose pitch is so incredible, what Courtney does simply wouldn't be possible otherwise. Thank you for daring!
You know a really popular guitar pedal is a pitch shifter , it auto tunes your guitar to a higher or lower pitch , auto tune has been used in rock music since like forever , the Beatles used samples, John Lennon used a drum machine etc , musicians will use any new theology they can get hold of. She uses a pitch shifter pedal on this video , which is auto tune
@@valley_robot auto tune is a little bit different, it makes adjustments to pitch in real time and it also doesn't let the original sound pass through unprocessed. Harmonizers traditionally just add an extra pitch, although they have been used for pitch correction. But it's a slow, painful process. Courtney is singing over loops, delays, and reverb, that's a recipe for disaster for most folks, and I daresay most name vocalists wouldn't take it on. She's great.
I just played your album while driving my 8 year old son home from camp. He didn't speak once on the way home. I asked him if he was okay; he said yes but that he felt something different inside of him and described it as feeling peacefulness. We love your album!
Thank you so much for your comment; this really made my day!! 🥹❤️❤️❤️ thank you both so much for listening, I’m so glad you’re enjoying it!! 🥰🎶
The blend of voice and harp through pedals produces such wonderful, ethereal sound. Thank you both for the collab and video!
thank you so much for watching! 🥰❤️
Everyone's talking about the music but nobody's talking about the production value of the video. Voiceovers and split screens and a dozen camera angles...Nice editing, you two!
thank you so much!!! I knew that second camera would be worth it 😂❤ thanks so much for the kind words and for being here with us!
Editing game ON POINT!🫡👍✨
Holy crap! Courtney is one of my favourite musicians and I'm so glad to see her anywhere.
As a guitar player this is fascinating to watch. I love when music gear and instruments are used for other musical purposes rather than just it's intended purpose of just being a guitar pedal.
This is so great! I'm a huge fan of guitarist Bill Frissell, who is a master effects pedal user. His music with the pedals sounds so organic. I think Courtney Swain succeeds at making her sounds organic, too. Beautiful.
Cheers!
Bill Frissell is amazing! I had so much fun having Courtney here, her talent and knowledge is unreal!
Love this 🙂 Her sound is much like a combination of Laurie Anderson and Cocteau Twins.
I love this EP! Trance like focus music. Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you!
Not only a video with Courtney but a video and an EP?!?! I couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Emily!
And by the way people, if you don't know Courtney's band Bent Knee go listen to their music they are amazing!
Every time Courtney showed a new pedal I went 😳, without fail.
Even going through your collection, the way she explored landed on so many killer moments.
What a cool collab, will be listening in full very soon. 🙏🫡
thank you so much 🥺❤️ it blew my mind that she was INSTANTLY so good at dialing in the pedals she never tried before!!
Courtney is so underrated! Those Bent Knee live sessions are incredible. I went and bought their whole discography after watching them all
Many, many years ago (more than 40, shall we say), I used to use distortion and phaser pedals exactly this way recording on an old reel to reel (sos) machine. So much fun.
What an awesome colab, can't wait to listen to the EP. Bent Knee and Courtney's solo stuff is so incredible
As a Composer/Songwriter (for 60 years), I find you to be two of THE most Creative Music Makers on TH-cam.
I love how you constantly try new things!
I’m so intrigued by the creativity here & dimensions you get out of this 5-6 pedal chain! And What an inspiring collaboration.. I look forward to more!
YEAHH!!
I’ve been listening to Courtney swain since 2019!! I loved between blood and ocean and You know what they mean!! It’s real awesome to see this!!
Thanks for introducing us to Courtney, this is an amazing display of talent!
This is great - a reminder that you can make music in so many different ways and it is always valid. Reminds me of singing through my guitar pickups to get effects on my voice, but I did that to sound ghoulish - this sounds fantastic.
This is a magical video. To hear that beautiful voice through pedals was beyond words. The creativity of taking a harp and singing (that’s unique by itself) is astounding. The whole mix of men and women making music, having fun, being artistic, demonstrating it and transcending genre is a life-enriching thing.
Really inspiring stuff!! It’s always cool to see people using guitar pedals in unexpected ways, and I think that especially a lot of the knob twisting brands like Chase Bliss or Meris come alive when they’re used in a context where the artist can manipulate the controls instead of choosing a setting and sticking with it for the duration because they can’t bend over in the middle of the song to change things.
I love the pedals and the artistic freedom of using them.
I am so glad that this human exists. She is wonderful.
2 genuine geniuses in 1 video. I’ve got chills. Thanks for sharing your platform and introducing us to ano😮amazing musician !!
You guys are so incredible! The album is amazing, and puts me in my feels! Awesome video, even better EP! 💜
thank you so much, Tom!!! 🥰❤
The sounds and the work brought to us here have stopped me dead in my tracks. Thank you for introducing this artist on your channel.
Thanks so much for being here! I’m so happy Courtney could come to the studio, she is amazing!
Courtney is incredible, whether performing with Bent Knee or solo. The music on this collab EP cuts through all the noise and touches a sacred space where the purity of sonic bliss originates. Simply marvelous.
This is awesome. Excited to listen to the EP today, but the idea that effects boxes can be used with *anything* that produces sound gets me thinkin'. Courtney's voice gives Bjork vibes, and her ability to manipulate the pedals on-the-fly is next-level skill. Brava!
This is amazing ❤, I’m soo glad more people are discovering such an amazing artist
I’m so grateful to have worked with her, she’s absolutely amazing!! 🥰❤️ thank you for watching!
My experimental board starts with a EAE Stompmix so I can input guitar, percussion, voice, etc. separately or all together. I always run my Mood into my Blooper because I love shortening the sample on Mood to make cool rhythmic stuff. I agree that there is nothing like the hands-on-knobs experience for creativity. Great sounds and thanks to both of you! 🎶
Lovely sounds! I've done similar stuff with analog delays and modulation into 80s Ibanez rack delays with hold function for looping! I've read that Brian Eno used those too.
WOW...THIS IS AMAZING! I am enthralled by all the effects that are possible with pedals and voice...WOW!
absolutely enthralling music, i lost myself for a good chunk of the video. the music feels like it grabs my heart and gently but firmly moves it. absolutely wonderful
thank you so much!! thank you so much for being here with us today ❤
A beautiful video, with beautiful sounds, and beautifully inspiring, from start to finish 😍 Thank you to everyone involved 👏
I love how you come up with such unique stuff! Thanks Emily for inspiring me 😊
it's my pleasure!! 🥹❤ thank you so much for being here with us!!
Courtney is amaaaaaazing!!!! I worked with her back in 2012 with the Ben Levin Group and the whole band crashed at my house and we did 2 shows at a local bowling alley in East Hampton!
hahah oh that's awesome!!! wish I could have seen one of those shows!! Courtney really is amazing!! 🥰❤️
I still watch the freak machine live video every once in a while.
Been a huge fan of Courtney for a while. I'm so stoked to see her getting exposure & I'm going to be spinning the new ep nonstop!
This is the coziest collab ever. You all are such inspirations!
Thanks David!
I really liked this video. Two of my very favorite artists are Enya and Sigur Ros, so this is right up my alley.
I love Enya! I’ve never considered pedals for voice. Never really considered them for anything really, this is my first exposure! These are so cool
This is so beautiful. Great sound. You both just gel immediately and effortless like. Great found sounds!
ahhhh thank you so much! ♡ :)
That's really cool. The two of you sound great together, really satisfying to see that there's a release at the end of the video.
Truly and literally breathtaking, the pairing of vocals and harp is so naturally beautiful, and the effects just take you to another world. Super excited to see what you two go on to create together.
This is really exciting stuff. I hope you have more colabs coming
Thanks so much! More collabs coming soon! 😊
Great ep. Y’all should do more
What an amazing duo! An amazing music with an amazing voice 🔥🖤
A true artisan. Beautiful voice and masterful use of the effects
i searched for a video like this for such a long time. thanks a lot!! amazing
I love stuff like this! It’s so creative. I’m going to listen to the EP after the video.
Like some of the other commenters, I'm an old school metalhead and hard rocker, but I really enjoy seeing people doing creative things like this that would normally be totally outside my wheelhouse. I play guitar and I'm totally a pedal-holic. I'm used to using them to get specific tones, but to see a pedal board used as an instrument in it's own right is fascinating.
This is absolutely incredible! Stoked to check out that ep!
this is amazing. everything she makes is so ethereal. i want to listen to her tracks now.
This was so inspiring! I can't wait to check out all your music...I just got it all cued up in apple music. Thank you!
Love it! I’m stoked to check out the EP! 👂
Thanks Stephen!
Vocals through Hedra are amazing and with Habit truly amazing. I hear creative talent like this and it inspires me to also create. I love how pedals prove we can create music unconventionally. You two are so talented! Thanks for sharing. I can’t wait to hear the EP!
This is one of the coolest and innovative music I have heard. So beautiful. Hope she makes an album!
That is so beautiful!!!! I can't wait to get this EP and melt listening to it. :)
So glad i pre ordered the EP. Feeling so smug right now. This is amazing! What an amazing voice and she has obviously trained herself to be quite instinctive with the pedals, which is a huge achievement. Outstanding! Thank you Emily, Courtney, Russ and Vince.
Thanks so much!! ❤️
@@emilyharpist I'm going to have a proper listen to the album later and maybe do some drawing. This is the sort of music that feeds one's creativity, and it takes me a while to absorb complexity. A lot of people have mentioned Bjork and Enya, I can see that, but there is something more and I need to soak it in. Thank you all for this music.
I think you guys should make an animation , of course with yall music, but also with characters with your regular voices, you both have warm, humour filled mello vibey voices ....lovely stuff 👾
hahahah YES I could see it!!
*STRONGLY AGREE* 😃
Wow...! That sounds so nice and relaxing...🌞 I'm definately going to enjoy your EP...! Great ambient Music! Loving it...!❤
This is great. I've been using the line six helix to use effects on my voice and guitar in my band Glasswalker and I've barely scratched the surface compared to this. Inspiring me to go play around with some sounds for sure.
Beautiful collaboration! Her vocals and harp through the pedals is 🤌🏻
I cannot even express how good this video is: from Courtney Swain to Emily (of course), to the Chase Bliss pedals to the wonderful ideas and pedal usage overall to the superb craftsmanship involved in the tracks creation! God, so perfect!
OMG! That is mind blowing. You and Courtney make an awesome creative duo. So cool to find someone with that level of talent and technical skills. She really does have a fantastic ear and also the sweetest voice. I instantly felt relaxed listening to her sing. She also has a certain charismatic aura to her. She's just seems so radiant (and has amazing eyes) with a beautiful soul. Watching this video makes me want to look for similar-minded musicians/songwriters to work with in my area.
Thank you so much!! 🥰 so glad we could help inspire you; thanks so much for listening! 💙🎶
I'm 45 years of age now. When I was a teenager we used to use effect pedals for nearly everything when we made music. Nobody had a computer, no DAW, no plug ins... Recently I came back to this way of producing music ❤ so nice to see that people discover it for new using this "old school" method
🥲 beautiful sounds! Can't wait to listen to the album
Bent Knee are one of the most exciting and inventive bands I’ve heard in recent years - Courtney is a fabulous vocalist and musician - great collaboration! Thanks!
Impressive collab..!
No words but awesome..
Please take this project to a live dimension around the country!
Such a joy to watch and listen. Thank you!
The Meris Hedra is wonderful -- one of my favourites. It shifts pitches but also delays and modulates.
That was the most blissful 13 mins I have listened to for a long time.
I have always plugged my mic into fx pedals for talking over DJ sets on net radio, for the past 20 years, but this takes things to a whole different level.
This was wonderful, I'd love to hear more collaborations in the future!
more to come!! ♡ :)
Really nice work. I'm so glad you two made stuff together!
This was amazing the collab album is amazing. And the medium is genius..I am all about this!!! Great job everyone
This is so cool! I saw Bent Knee open for Haken a couple of years back and they were awesome! Just downloaded the EP, bravo Emily and Courtney!
Thank you so much!! 🥹❤️ we really appreciate your kind words and all your support!!
Thank you so much Emily and Courtney! This is such a lovely video and I believe it's also very inspirational for other music producers as well!
She’s passionated and I respect that
I saw her do this live with Bent Knee in the back of a comic shop in 2018 and it's still the best show I've ever seen, I'm so stoked you two worked together!
This is truly a treat! Ya'll inspire me so much! ❤
Agreed! You inspire me as well, dude 🫡🤙
Her singing and all the effects are like an awesome mixture between Sigur Rós and SAW2 era Aphex Twin. Love it.
Loved this video. Chills going in and coming out. Keep up the good work.
🥹❤
Seeing someone master their tools and have the knowledge and creativity to produce their own unique sound worlds is really incredible to see. Great video!
Thanks so much! Courtney really is incredible!
Beautiful EP/Album...on my wishlist
This was fantastic! Your EP is too! Congrats to you both.
Thanks so much! ❤️
I love you both!
Thank you for this!
Amazing!! So creative. Emily you are amazing, thank you so much for sharing this.
Thank you so much 🥰❤️ thanks for watching and for being here with us!!
I like it when you bring in other people and collab with them. They're fun and I'm looking forward to hearing your EP.
the music you two have made is absolutely beautiful 😭 some of the songs really makes me want to edit an AMV
Now THAT would be epic
A great collaboration. Sounds awesome!
This is beautiful and inspiring. Thanks for this video and for listing all the pedals. I just had an idea for my storytime recordings
I use the Radial Engineering Voco-Loco pre-amp/effects loop as my interface between mic and pedals for this purpose. Loads of fun and, as shown here, cool results.
That’s awesome! I also heard the OBNE MAW is good for that as well! I love everything Radial makes
The trashtalk phone! 😍
This was all very perfect. Thank you both.
This is amazing and so inspiring creatively! I never thought to use pedals like this omg I have so much to do
