I know what you all do is hard work, but this is the life you chose that works for the whole family. While you make it look easy and fun, you have so many teachable moments. Every aspect of the life you show us only works well because you all help each other. I predict little Buggy will have her own garden, be the greatest cook and she will be able to tear down an engine and rebuild it. (The boys too!)
I gotta stop everything! The Hollars have posted! Love you guys! ❤
Ben, you speak so eloquently about your four boys, but your precious daughter Buggy is also a constant presence on the homestead. She wants to be involved, fearlessly, in every project, inside and out-of -doors. She is the personification of what Maria Montessori called "the absorbent mind." Before long, she'll be older and stronger and she will surprise us all.
Love your Toby dog book Buggy! Gold Shaw farm will love it! Thank you for sharing! The bread makes the sandwich!
That's not sketchy - that's being creative. That's thinking outside the box. That's why a country boy can survive. And yes, thank God we don't have smell-o-vision. Meg's cooking is always drool worthy!
Country peeps just know how to do things 😉. Agree on the drooling 🤣😜👵🏻👩🌾❣️
I love how Meg takes such good care of her family.😊❤
Meg's bread recipe is my go to for most bread products. It is easy and does not fail to work. Hoping you all feel better quickly.
Yes, this comment here. I have failed at bread every time I make it, it turns out way too crumbly. Not Megs recipe! I've made buns, sandwich bread, hoagie rolls and French bread. AMAZING
Meg sorry to hear that you have a cold bug... I am impressed that you still manage to feed the troops and keep smiling even when you are probably not feeling the best. God bless you
Aweome job Ben with the hoist the Swiss dipping sandwichs look awesome Meg so happy for you
As an added precaution, if you leave the hoist outside secure a tarp over it when not in use.
I was thinking like a box of some kind he could set over it.
THat is what I was thinking.
Or even a heavy duty plastic bag
I was thinking some tin over the top to shed water away from it. Like a mini roof.
I was thinking the same thing. I’d certainly do something to protect it from the elements. I would go so far as to contact the manufacture and see what they say is necessary to do to protect the hoist when it is outdoors.
❤❤❤
Good afternoon
❤❤❤
Not sure why, but this is your best video. I really enjoyed all the laughter. Your family is so down to earth...it is a joy to be " a part of!" Also, I'm always hungry after watching you! 😊
Meg's baking and cooking look so good, i'm not into cooking videos but i love watching her.
Me too ❤
I love how you both have the patience to teach the kids how to do things and let them help
I never fail to thoroughly enjoy your music choices, Ben. Seriously, it's *always* the perfect vibe.
$10 says it is ALL Meg...LOL
Lol it's Meg. She's the Editor.
Dancing music for sure💃🏽💃🏽🥰
Meg, watching you make bread is never boring! I love the way you guys incorporate the inside and the outside work into your videos!
Also: Could you can the lamb for the sandwiches? I love having canned stew meat on the shelf for shredded meat dishes.
When you pivot back to the wall put a roof over the hoist when it is pushed back to the wall to keeping it out of the weather
The best part of your delicious dinner was knowing everyone had been anticipating it from the day before! The waiting makes it taste even better! Interesting to know the taste difference of the hair sheep, I've never like mutton, but I might have to try that kind. Learn something every day at Hollar University! 😁
Yes, hair sheep have a better for you fat because they are grass fed. Meat is much more like beef.
Barn - workshop - equipment shed - a place for everything - everything in it's place
I couldn’t help but think while you were cleaning up the place outside, the old saying, “Paw, companies coming, clean up the yard!” 😂 Ben you and your boys did a great job. Hope you all get well soon!
I cannot express how much I love your family.
I cannot go to bed weeknights until I have seen your video because I know I will go to bed with a smile on my face and a warm fuzzy feeling. Thank you so much, my life is very difficult raising 3 autistic children 2 of whom are severe and other issues. My son is 15, 6ft 4, non verbal, fine and gross motor control issues, poor upper muscle tone, incontinent and has a condition called PICA. I care as much as I can for my mum who has dementia and all this on top of now (as of 2019) being in a wheelchair with constant severe pain..... I am saying all this not for sympathy there is no need life is tough but my kids are worth every minute. I am saying it because I guess I want you to know how much you positively impact people worldwide.
Ok enough from this motormouth it is 11pm and I have to get a little sleep while I can (kids do not sleep well 😂).
Thank you xx
May God bless you with eternal life in heaven for all your love you have given on this earth.
🙏 for you n your family , I know now why I 🚫 or shouldnt complian for bed days now 😮😢❗... My parents are 😇 already cared for n passed on n I may have worn my body out also 😟😖❗... I now enjoy helping with grandchildren couple times a week n feel guilty I 🚫 do more but some days I do good to stand up 😢too 😖, God has us tho , take time to rest 🙏❗
I love love Megs knitting patterns! Fell in love with her many years ago in California! Transferred from knitting to her little backyard farmstead!!❤️🥰❤️🥰
Megs bread recipe is our families go to recipe now. I even use the basic recipe to make Chelsea buns and cinnamon rolls.
Love your vlogs seeing everyone getting involved helping to run the farm 🚜. Get well soon, love and blessings xjx❤
You need a pole barn with a concrete floor. lol
I like seeing ya'll seemingly so happy.
I really enjoy the boys helping you in the videos, they are all growing so much
Everything cleaned up nice! Great job on the hoist! Dinner looked delicious! Absolutely love everything lamb! It’s so delicious and good for you!
Ben, build a box around the hoist so you can keep it up year round. Hope you guys are feeling better. Maybe eat more fermented foods. Health starts with the gut.
Meg please start a channel for cooking and canning ❤
Give the wire rope on the hoist a coat of Fluid Film. The crane oilers at work did this every year. They used a paint brush, I think.
Get well soon y'all 🙏 it sucks to get sick. Meg you make my mouth water with the meals you prepare...au jus is pretty great too. 💖 Glad Ben got his hoist for butcher day! 👍
This month has been so busy. I have had so much to do. I had to clone tomatoes, bring in the ginger, clean the chicken coop and weatherize it before the cold weather hits. Yesterday I had to get supplies and go grocery shopping. There were potatoes to plant and batch cooking to do. Fall is a busy time. I harvested the last of my tomatoes and pumpkins and made a big pot of chicken soup with a lot of onions and garlic for when we get sick. You have a large family and I can only imagine all that you have to do. The heavy rains have started here. I miss Summer already. I love you infectious laugh Meg. God bless you all.
I enjoyed your video today and I just wanted to say Thank You to The Hollar Homestead for sharing your life with this old man😊
Buggy was pretty adamant about them skunks and her book not telling her the truth. 😅
Good job on the hoist and hope it all goes well on the days it needs to.
Time to pull out the Elderberry syrup. I've never used it but I here it is good for colds. I see Morgan's book about Toby Dog has made it down to North Carolina. That is so great. As always Meg, your dinners look so good...real comfort food. Have a Blessed day.
Also fire cider and honey fermented garlic..
A family that plays together ( even when you're working you make it look like it's play time) and prays together which you always do before all your meals, is a blessed family. Hope you get through this flu thing quickly. Best wishes from Hellas.
Sew a waterproof cover for the new hoist, maybe a zipper close to make it snug.
You should find a recipe for “Norwegian Fenalår “,to cure your lambs .
I grew up on a sheep farm.
My grandad made cured all the lamb legs. We had an unused old house on our farm where he used one of the upstairs bedrooms to cure the legs.
The whole ceiling was just hanging legs in thin white sacks.
Looked a bit creepy to me as a small child😅
But it’s so god!!
We eat it on sandwiches , with scrambled eggs and potato salad and “lefse” , a soft very thing tortilla like bred , made with boiled potatoes and flour.
I hope you look up both Meg, I know this would be right up your alley!.
I’m 100% you’d love it as you like lamb and cured meat so much❤❤❤❤
Meg Id live to see a short of how your gardens have changed since you started, even seasons if that not too many pictures. I just remember it from the beginning and it really just changes so much each year. The green house this year really changed it.
💯 much love guys!
Just wanted to say thank y'all for your beautiful ways..blessings to you in every way..xoxo ❤️
Making me hungry just hearing you speak about the lamb dip sandwiches. Meg is one heck of a good cook to be sure. I love to watch her cook as she truly enjoys the art and doing it all pleasing her customers........and you customers there love it all...........just fun to see you enjoy your lifestyle and home.........who knew when you left B. Cal...........LOL Great choice of lifestyle!
As soon as Meg said IBC tote my husband said yup they watch the same people we do!🤣
😉😂😂
Yep me to, another hard working couple.
Meg will have to give cooking lessons to the gals the boys marry-they will have a hard act to follow! I feel sympathy for them already 😄
I think they will be greatly blessed for all Meg has to offer!
Skunks come in different colors including a variety of browns. Also they can be all white and also spotted like a dalmatian. I used to know a lady who raised and studied skunks. It was fascinating the things she could say about them.
Loved this video. This was my first vid this morning and it was just the perfect way to start my day. This longer type video is very rewarding for the viewer. I particularly enjoyed the "sketchy" part. Jack is a champ and was def the man for the job. Have a great weekend coming up and a full chicken freezer after your harvest of those beautiful big red monsters. And also, a French Dip is my favorite thing (the other favorite is a pastry called a "Napoleon"). I would not share either of these perfect foods.
The surest way to find your mistakes is to bring in an audience.
Thanks for showing the clean up for getting ready for the chicken butchering, It looks really nice. Those broilers look nice. I had those a couple years ago. I got a rooster with my order and he was beautiful. I've gone back to the Cornish Cross because it got harder to order the MacMurray Hatchery Big Red Broilers. I could get the Cornish Cross easier and locally. I bet they'll be delicious! I bet your French dip sandwiches with the leftover lamb meat will be fantastic Meg! Too bad people go to the class sick! Nice hoist! It was fun to see the boys play with it. Wow, that dinner looks soooo good! Wow, that's good to know that hair sheep taste like beef! Thanks for this video Hollar family!
Love lamb too, Thank you and family for sharing part of your daily adventures be Bless of the Lord always🌺🍍🌴✝️🇺🇸🤙🏽🫶🏽
that is a worked out solution no sketchy and not in the dark or rain. when dad says who wants to do something sketchy? instant attention lol. what a delicious meal with that broth along with lamb and bread fresh from oven. wow.
I had a co-worker who would always come to work sick! She would never take sick leave and stay home, and the rest of us would get sick as well. We've been cleaning up just in time for the snow that hit last night and is still going. Got the chains on the tractor (1948 Ford 8N) just in time! I hear ya about have room to stash all our equipment!
Get some rest Meg hope you feel better soon
Thanks for perking up my taste buds. Meg does a really good job in the kitchen for the family.
I love seeing you work with your boys. Your oldest son is so much like you and he’s good looking. Be very proud of your boys you’re growing up to be fine men 😊
Teach that man to cook! I learned 'soul food' cooking and baking from the old, Black women in my neighborhood, back in the late '60s - early '70s, about the age of your youngest son. Best thing I ever did. I cook it and eat it every day...😋
right on!! we love our backhoe and tractor for an impromptu ladder/scaffolding!
Sheep meat is so good. Coming from South Africa, my parents always bought a whole lamb from the Butcher. The sheep in South Africa basically eat & forage all the local herbs & grasses which really add to the taste of the sheep. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
You and your familly are such honest likeable people GOD BLESS you all
As a farm kid and now elderly adult….It’s Always Something! Needing your attention and clean up, well that’s always ongoing!! Lol love you guys!
Good afternoon Ben yes its a busy time getting ready for winter
Yes, it is awesome watching you cook Meg! Cooking shows are extremely popular! Watching you gives me courage to try new methods and recipes. Keep up the GREAT work. Never worry about us being bored. We are NOT!!! ❤️🥰😍👏👍🌹. Ben, put plastic or something to keep the moisture off the wench.
Eat your lacto fermented foods to build your resistance up , fire cider is a key element in my home
Get well soon Meg. Great job Jack and Ben with the hoist, the one arm pull up made me chuckle. Ben did you ever manage to get the massive rat that was chomping on the feed? Hope all goes well with chicken freezer camp processing
I absolutly love lamb. I am envious of you all. I will now have to go buy a lef of lamb just to make these . Oh and buggy sure is getting big.
For extra safety I would build a enclosure with tin sheeting to help keep the moisture off the electronic hoist. If anything it'll help last longer- Moisture, heat, and debry from the wind.
It would have been good to lightly sand the axle and then apply grease afterwards. It will save you from future work. Axles should not be hammered on.
Covering your equipment with anything will save you future work.
Lining up all your "stuff" somewhere and then putting everything back in its place after use will save you time later. My policy is "touch once". Anytime you need to keep touching it, it uses more time. Doing that also makes you mentally healthy when the area doesn't look disorganized.
Your meal looked very good! Though, if I buy lamb I would prefer it tastes like lamb. Just me.
You may want to consider having your manual hoist set up as a backup for your classes. Electrical things have a way of failure... just when you need them.
I need to put up my old hens in jars. Like you, too many things hitting at once. Plus, my health has been being hammered too. Today I will rack two carboys of wine for bulk aging and then hope to run out back for some bow hunting. One toilet valve replacement is also on the list. Just fixed electrical connections in my well because well guys did a poor job. Water is back.
Yeah, a lot of us understand your situation.
I’ve watched your channel sence ya started , and I now know why . Your constant and on point for one simple reason, you get up and continue to work and improve. I wish I could make your butcher class not that I need to know , I’m old farm boy myself, but just to meet you and family. Love y’all ❤ stay true to you very being !!! Peace
I love how you have those hams hanging from the ceiling.
Icelandic lamb though a wool sheep if mild and wonderful. Triple breed, wool for Meg's knitting, meat for fabulous meals and can be used for dairy. Love this breed!
Jack’s personality is delightful.
Cotter pin fixed, Good job Son. 👍🏼 The torch is passed onto the next generation!😊
Meg & Ben, I always have admired your kitchen cabinets! I think it is because mine are I think the same color. Mine is called American Egg. Your family always make wonderful videos! Thank you!
Meg is an awesome cook!
Good for you, Ben! That is a well deserved necessity for you and the family. Never thought I’d ever say that about an electric hoist 😂
It is really great that you have the skills you do that saves a lot of money and res ue stuff that would end up in the dump
Ben my father taught me you are only limited in the things you can do by the tools that you use. Keep them clean, repaired and know where they are. Teach your boys the same.
I love making Meg's bread for everything! Anytime I use it in my recipe videos, I tag her in it.
Buggy didn’t get to get hoisted?! Hey, what if you tarp that hoist when not in use? Or put a “roof” over it!
That lamb sounds delicious. I love lamb. Stew with micned meat and veggies with mashed turnips on top to make a cottage pie. Lamb stew with peas and carrots with gold potatoes and lots and lots of garlic. Lamb curry. Oh, my goodness. Memories. Buggy has a Toby Dog book!
I would make a platform (like a kids fort) with a 1-3ft wide hole in the middle to send cable thru. You can put a roof on it and leave the hoist mounted on it !
As someone with an immunocompromised child, I appreciate your view on "we're sick, we're not going out." If our child gets sick, it's an instant hospital visit. On a happier note, I love watching you make bread (even though you think it's boring!)! I totally get it though lol And those sandwiches look AMAZING.
My husband's favorite store, Harbor Freight. Even I find the store interesting, but he could spend so much time wondering around in there.
Elderberries grow well and make a great privacy screen.
I’m sorry to hear your all a little under the weather. People are really inconsiderate these days when they’re sick. 😷 Thank you
You gave me a great idea, making it into a controlled stretcher for the back, best wishes to you & your beautiful family, take care
Hope you all get rid of that cold soon! I wish sick people would just admit they're sick and stay home. Great job on the hoist, Ben. Could you just wrap it in a tarp when not in use to protect it from the elements? And Meg, those sandwiches sound amazing! That broth had to be just what the doctor would order for a cold!
You ought to frame a small shed roof on that gable end that you can swing the hoist under to.keep it out of the weather.
Get yourself a good treated canvas tarp to cover the hoist. We had some canvas equipment covers in the Army that where 40+ years old and still getting it done.
just put a waterproof cover over it until you need it much easier than taking up and down all the time
Just a quick note. Bend the ends of the chipper cotter pin so it won't fall out. Bend one each way. Blessings
I had one of those hoists in my transmission shop to lift Allison school bus transmissions. It lasts for yrs but will not last outside
Thank you. Blessings
Homemade “Fire Cider” will keep those colds at bay! I’ve fermented two batches and will probably do a couple more to get us thru the winter.
Get well soon.
Hi
Content ideas:
- How to make broth
- How to preserve leftovers
-How to reheat them ( microwave, oven?)
- how to harvesr pigs, birds and a beef cow( non monetized?)
God bless y'all !
The hoist should come in really handy.
Awe you made my stomach rumble. I haven't had lamb for 3 years. I could taste it watching this video. But you braggin' about how good it was just started the rumble. Glad you enjoyed it!
Feel better Hollars!
You are blessed with the boys and coming on to a daughter. Soon Meg will need her and thereby a challenge to come!🤣. Good luck with your clean up‼️
💚 That hoist will really make a difference in lift the pigs..I also suggest wrapping it un a tarp when not using it between your butchering classes. Curious to hear what weight your Red meat chickens will average. More people seem to be moving away from the Cornish Crosses, even if they take several more weeks. 💚
Lots of goings on these days at the Hollars! With nearly 100 meat birds, 6 pigs, and a steer to harvest...how do you get it all done!?! Somehow you get 'er done though!! Meg's meals make me so hungry watching her cook!! Those lamb Swiss dips were over the top!!! Loved Buggie's discussion about "kunks" color!!!!!!🥰 Feel better soon everyone!
