It’s kinda strange to me to ge bare feet in the winter. We were never allowed to go bare feet or sit on the ground before we had heard the first cuckoo bird in the spring , avoiding to an old wives tale ( usually one time in May) We try to stay in here these days . 35 inches of snow and -22 F… Haven’t been so cold for 20 years🥶🥶🥶
I’m not concerned about the cold. The children now a days don’t feel it. But around a construction site where there are nails and possible sharp metal objects around? I’m not trying to shame anyone. I’m just being a mom.
Ben, My Grandpa always went Saturdays to do his shopping. He first would go to the barbershop to get a trim and chat with his buddies and catch up on the local gossip. After that he would stop at the corner store and get a coffee & a dozen doughnuts. His third stop was to the Farmers Feed & Supply Store. He would get Bar Chain Oil, Chicken Feed, a pair of gloves if there was a sale, 3 pack of wooden matches, some milking machine hose( just in case), three reels of 5/64 cable wire for the sugarhouse chimney pipes. He would pay and head back thru the loading dock area where he had parked his truck. Back then the farmers brought in empty grain sacks. Grandpa always asked if he could grab a coulple and they always gave him as many as he needed. He used these sacks for his tree farm. He used old dried manure and compost first ,then dirt. He would plant the tree in the sack then would keep it up in the milk house because it was warm and wet. Time to plant and he always slit the sack and planted it in the hole with the tree.
I love how sister cousins herself with songs and stories , lol so precious also how much she wants to dive in and help ,such a strong character ty Jesus
Nice sunshine. It was sunny and warm a few hours ago. We took a walk. Right before the sun went down the clouds moved in and the snow started and it'll get down to 18°F overnight. It's only half an inch of snow but it'll be ice in the morning and no snowplows in the Pacific NW. Wow, the hide dried and broke the frame! I'm glad you saved the hide. Nice, mostly back to somewhat square. I like the big bolt you put through it. Wow, 60 to 65 mph winds could rip that plastic right off the hide. That will make a great rug. Looking good upstairs. Meg, you feed those class participants very well! That's great that you got free trees from the moldy seeds in the bucket. Two pear trees and two cherry trees! Cute that Buggy picked which garden plot to put the smaller peach tree. I don't even know what sun chokes are. It's a nice little food forest there. I like that you're putting the little cherry trees there. Too bad about your black walnut trees! I have black walnut trees. Do you want me to send you some of my nuts? I'm in Minnesota. Thanks for this video Hollar family!
Ben faithful viewer here. I love your parenting style. The kids have so much freedom blended with responsibilities. That makes for a well rounded person. Your entire family pitches in to help. Your home looks awesome with that skirt you made. It just gives it a clean fresh look. My skirt is sun aged and needs replaced. I could use you. Tell Meg hi and give Lil Sister a hug! Congratulations on the baby. 💖
As many have commented, I love that all your kids run around barefoot. No Podiatry needed there. They are helpful, respectful and growing Ike the weeds. Buggy is going to be thrilled with a new baby. As im sure everyone else will be. Oh and Meg, you are glowing. So enjoy watching everything you are doing.
I’m so glad you’re keeping the hide. Especially since this was your first steer…can’t wait to see how it turns out! I have enjoyed every minute of the harvest! Thanks for sharing..blessings❤🙏🏻
Barefoot Buggie! I love that she has a coat and gloves.😊 This is the farm girl life I grew up as 50 years ago. I have never regretted growing up on a farm 😊 Meg, Ben your children are the best helpers. Great parenting shows through them.❤
A motto I'm still trying to perfect is, "don't put it down, put it away." When I'm doing any outside project, I've learned that if I just take a few minutes and put everything back..(garden tools, water hose, buckets, project stuff etc) it keeps my yard, shed area, garden area..sooo much nicer and I don't ever have to come back and face a mess. The items don't just get that way, it's where we didn't 'finish' and put them away. An expert gardener that I watch says if you know you're gonna move shrubs or trees, go ahead and cut down into the roots, and leave them...they will develop smaller roots closer to the tree and it will be easier to move the tree and you will have new roots growing to make sure the shrub/tree survives.
You should put burn barrels in your orchard in the spring. On frost nights start fires in the barrels and the smoke will keep the frost from sticking to your trees. That is what they do to apples in the UK.
I really like how Ben allows Buggy to figure out where things should go. Allowing her to be decisive and make choices is a skill that she's developing, as daddy gives her tips.
Always learn so much and love your family!!!! Always feel like I need to pay you all for all you do and give to me. So today, I watched Arnie Tex. and He made the best "Grilled Tacos Al Pastor" Used pork butt so know it will be something you all may enjoy! I am going to make it when I butcher my 3 little pigs. Thank you again for all the teaching you give to make my little homestead better!
Blows my mind. I am sitting here with 15" of snow on the ground and more coming down and you are planting trees & digging sun chokes. Little over 1100 miles between us. Wow!
Omg so happy to see someone else grow Jerusalem artichokes. I like to boil them til soft, mash them and then mix with some black beans, whole oats, cooked white rice, seasoning like oregano, salt, pepper, dried onions, garlic, cayenne pepper add an egg or two with some homemade bread crumbs and make them into burgers. Bake or fry and serve on homemade English muffins with some Tzatziki sauce.. They also make great meatballs using the same mix and add to mac and cheese or spaghetti and sauce. If you slice the raw artichokes super thin and air fry them they are better than potato chips. Dip the chips in a mix of homemade mayo and some hot sauce. Anyone who has gas issues with the sunchokes, just soak them in a vinegar and water solution for a few hours, then drain and cook however you like. We also shred them and serve on top of a kale salad with some feta cheese. We grow them in our suburban backyard and have already pulled out about 40lbs worth. You can store them in some pine shavings in pine chips in a cool dark place for a few months. Our chickens and ducks also love them.
I watched Ben last summer talking about his peach trees and we purchased Red Haven peaches and I saved the pits and planted them in the fall, I am hoping that they will sprout!
Ben ,Meg , and family. I enjoy your videos so much! I’m glad your boys are such a great team. Working together with you to make sure that huge hide stays dry, and stretched. Congratulations on the new baby! Buggie is such a good gardening helper! Meg, I speak strength, energy, and enough rest to get you through the next class. In Jesus Name!
In Texas I grow cilantro and lettuce in winter. Start in November and it just grows without bolting …as long as I water it!! We don’t get much rain in west Texas! “Congratulations on the upcoming Special event! I cried when y’all announced baby # 6!! Meg you look beautiful!” I know you probably have a beautiful shawl on the needles for new baby!
Can't wait to see the tanning of the hide. Love seeing the family working together, y'all are always busy. Love to see Buggy and her yelling "GROW!" Cracks me up. 😂🤣😂😊
I’m in the U.K. and I never wore shoes even in snow sometimes. Walking on a stony beach was nothing. Even now in my 60s I hate waring shoes flip flops because I have to have shoes on my feet due to being diabetic. Watching your children run around reminds me of my childhood ❤
I was glad to see what you are doing with your CowHide! Thank you for sharing that. Buggy is going to be a great little gardener ❤ I hope all of your boys will love homesteading when they are grown. It's such a healthy way of life 👍🏻Also, Congratulations on your new Baby!
Thankyou for sharing your life.. You are a beautiful family who I've come to love watching.🙂 You and Meg are an inspiration and I learn so much from watching your day to day living... Much 💜 to you and your growing family.. 💜🦘🦘💜
Hey ya, I just love watching your video your children and everything you do and I’ve learned a whole bunch of stuff watching you guys over all the videos😊
I love that Buggie is going to have a little Sister or Brother. Love seeing the boys and Buggy barefoot outside learning and enjoying life. Can't wait to see that Hide Tanned. You guys rock. Peace from WV
I love the barefoot kids , I never wore shoes unless I had to go to town, come to think of it after 50 years I still don’t 😂! Even the cold feels good to walk on ! ❤❤❤
I am excited to see how you tan the hide and turn it into a rug. How freaking kewl will that be! I am also impressed with how you are creating a few orchards. I love trees. Ben, you always say. "Sounds like a pretty simple dinner," Dude. NOTHING about Megs dinners are simple!
Awesome Project Ben. Yall just never stop being amazing. Meg needs to win an award to doing everything that she does in that tiny kitchen.
I for one, absolutely love that the kids run around barefoot! Like we used to when we were kids!👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
It’s kinda strange to me to ge bare feet in the winter.

I’m not trying to shame anyone. I’m just being a mom.
I love it barefooted kids I am still one shoes are overrated
And I love that they clearly wear their jeans a couple days in a row so mom doesn't have to do laundry so often! ❤
@@toniasilvas5422 @toniasilva it’s ok. This is their own property not a construction site. They clean up after themselves. Try not to worry. ❤️

The key to keeping things cleaned and picked up is to constantly invite company over...
That is the absolute truth. It also explains why my place is a disaster since no one has visited in about five years. LOL
When a plant of any sort has Princess Buggie yell " GROW!" at it, it darn well better grow!
Buggy, girl you steal my heart. You are so stinking' cute! The boys working together are amazing as well. Beautiful family.

Lots of busyness. Work never ends on a farm. The boys are such a big help. Stay warm and be safe. 💞
I am so happy I'm not the only one that has kids running barefoot this time of year 😅
Love you guys so much ❤

Love that you have saved the tiny cherry trees and saved that second peach. Soon they will thank you with fruit.
I love how your little girl enjoys tagging along side of you.
Bug is so cute the way she helps her dad. She had me laughing. Those big gloves on a jacket and barefoot lol. Be safe and God bless.
Im in Maine so planting is a few months away, but you can bet I will be telling my plants to grow with Buggy's enthusiasm. LOL. GROW! GROW!

67. Same here. Getting bare feet in contact with the ground is actually very healthy.
Gotta love all the helpers and their bare feet! Looking forward for the next one.

It was so sweet to hear Buggie say "my momma" as she climbed up into Meg's lap at the end...at least that's what I thought I heard !❤
Nothing simple ever about her dinners Ben. Simple is a can of beans with boxed cornbread. 😊
I love seeing the kids helping you outside! And Buggy is so cute still telling whatever you plant to GROW!
Fantastic accomplishments, by the whole family! May all your projects be successful! Blessings to everyone 🤗💕🇨🇦
Planting for many years to come. Best wishes for the class. 💕💕🌻🌻
I was glad to see what you are doing with your CowHide! Thank you for sharing that.
Buggy is going to be a great little gardener ❤ I hope all of your boys will love homesteading when they are grown. It's such a healthy way of life 👍🏻Also, Congratulations on your new Baby!

My kids run around barefooted in the winter too!
Good job dad way to involve the kids. Really enjoy the channel. Making memories!
I rememberwhen I was just a little feller, my dad would tan hides... but it seemed it was quite often it was my hide he was tanning. NO FUN
Awesome, Blessings to all of you.

I hope y’all made it through the rain storm unscathed. We had a lot of flooding over near Charlotte.
Have fun at your workshop!!!
Ben, great project with the hide, can't wait to see how it turns out! 👏👏👍👍
I love the barefoot kids , I never wore shoes unless I had to go to town, come to think of it after 50 years I still don’t 😂! Even the cold feels good to walk on ! ❤❤❤
cilantro tip...cut it early so it gets bushy and trim and freeze in ice cube trays
Good video. Thank you. Blessings
Would love to see the process of the hide tanning!
Cilantro is a cool weather crop, try putting it in your high tunnel this winter or very early spring
My chickens dug under the fence and logs around a tiny sunchoke patch and ate them all! Great back up chicken food.
You are a beautiful family ❤
Grow cilantro in the cold! It handles freezes perfectly. It also stores really well just frozen in ur freezer
Great video I love Daddies taking up time with there children tyfs hugs
I am excited to see how you tan the hide and turn it into a rug. How freaking kewl will that be!
I am also impressed with how you are creating a few orchards. I love trees. We had 5 Queen Anne cherry trees in the yard where I grew up outside Vancouver Canada,

Buggy is always in there like a dirty shirt. She is too precious, she will be one sweet big sister. Good luck for your last class.
Congratulations! I’m so happy for your family!!!
I really admire your dedication to building a strong homestead.
Miss Buggy is the bestest supervisor, tree digger, Jerusalem artichoke spotter...barefoot baby...She reminds me of myself and my boys. We were and are still barefoot babies...great immune systems!
That salmon looked amazing at the end. Thank you for taking us along for the tree transplant. I love seeing Lilyanna in her bare feet and winter coat.😆
We are hunkering down here in northern Wisconsin for an incoming blizzard.❄️💨☃️ I’d take your weather over ours any day of the week at this time of the year!
I'm excited to see how that steer hide turns out.
I love the way you Garden Ben. Wish I could get away with it, but the Elk have their own agenda around here. Happy Day

My brother use to tan hides too…he used a lot of salt.

There is a very old British way for tanning hides, bury the thing in Oak chips and leave it for about a year.
All those feet! January and all those bare feet! Absolutely LOVE it!!
Heya, oh I like to see what your gone do with that hide ben.
Hello friend 😊
Congrats on the new addition! I have been curious on how the bees did last year. Were you able to harvest any honey?
Love watching you work with your future farmer Miss buggy. She certainly has enthusiasm at for least being a cheerleader.
Hello a, FYI...when the clouds look opaque, like a bathroom window... they ate snow clouds. Here it means about 500miles away, 24-48 his, they will get snow. Lorraine Australia
Your daughter will be running the farm at 7 she’s very smart
You guys should look into aquaponics. I love it and you can make a system out of an ibc tote. Basically endless veggies especially salad greens
I have the tallow “chore” this weekend. I only have 25 lbs worth of suet but I’m dividing it in half and will do the other later. More manageable for me.
