2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT Review | Why I Like It

  • Yamaha has updated the new Tracer 9 for 2021, pretty much from the ground up. How do those changes relate in real life to comfort, riding for many hours, creature comforts and fun level? Is the new 2021 Tracer 9 a full fledged, comfortable long term tourer, or does it fall short?

      There is a reason on the single beam when crossing traffic in a dark environment. One beam looks like a bike. 2 small and close beams look like a (far away) car and we know cagers always think about other cars on the road.
      But I feel for whoever had to listen to this joke too often.

    I after watching your video, I think there are a few deal breakers for me. Bad illumination from the headlights, ugly looking headlights, headlight too small for visibility to cars, TFT display with many items too small and hard to see, TFT at the wrong angle to see without tilting your head down, uncomfortable seat, and a windscreen that is basically the same as previous models (probably noisy). Thanks of an honest review

    Excellent review. Lots of information reviewers usually omit. To sum it up, a very good upper midrange engine strapped to a good midsize frame. Very versatile, a candidate for a "single bike do everything" for those of us who can not afford to keep multiples of them. Main problems are dashboard and spongy brakes. 10/10 idea, 6/10 execution. But as time goes, owners can turn that 6 into a 10 with upgrades and further investment. I am concerned about the suspension in terms of reliability though. I would rather prefer a simpler setup at a cheaper price, because fancy stuff gets destroyed pretty quickly on what we call roads around here (more like directions, travel vectors, not roads).

    • @malidawgz5690
      @malidawgz5690 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      fjr1300 es has a similar suspension design which worked well with no reliability issues.

    • @iskinmind7020
      @iskinmind7020 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@malidawgz5690 I own a 2009 FJR1300A. And you are lucky if rear suspension lives past 50 000km around here. Rear shock alone is a huge "ouch" for your wallet. Anything more complicated gets a hard pass from me personally. Call me old fashioned, but I fail to see the benefit of electronically adjustable suspension if it potentially compromises reliability, cost of operation, weight or everything at once.

    It's a subjective opinion on the breaks here, and I disagree with it. I guess it depends on which bike you are comparing to - if it is R1... well... yes, it's not going to be the same. I think the breaks are great on this bike. They saved my butt last week when two deers jumped in front of me. I managed to stop in seconds and remain in control of the bike. I must say ABS and traction control did an amazing job too there!

    Negatives on the seat and brakes are pretty big negatives...

    • @Ritalie
      @Ritalie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bike seems pretty awesome. The engine sounds so good. But that seat looks so ridiculous? The hard forward slope, sending you straight into the gas tank? Looks like it would not be comfortable at all. I imagine that the brakes probably bed in, and get better the more you use them. You can simply switch to a softer brake pad material. The material that brake pads are made from, will radically change braking feel. Hard brake pads, or brake pads that have a tiny trace of oil on them, can make brakes feel useless. In most situations, they sell at least 5 different brands of brake pads, each with slightly different material.

    • @DerpEye
      @DerpEye 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      His are just opinions. I've read plenty of negative comments about my Africa Twin suspension, being too soft. Except, i'm not fat, and don't ride it as a sports bike, so the suspension is just about right. I'm pretty sure the brakes on the T9 are ok, at worst, average. The seat comfort depends on many factors, height, weight, position etc.

    When are motorcycle manufacturers going to realise that we want a flat seat with a bit of room to move backwards and forwards.

    • @Ritalie
      @Ritalie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a few major, major problems with new bikes. Where is the muffler? Do you see a muffler? Nobody wants an invisible muffler. Men like nice looking mufflers, that flow with the body lines of the bike. Nobody ever uses a "nub" for a muffler. If you wanted a nub for a muffler, you could just take the saw, and saw the muffler off. The other problem is the dual TFT screens looks really silly. Having 2 digital screens side by side, makes no sense whatsoever. I don't believe the brakes are a problem, because they wouldn't send a bike out with such horrible brakes, I am sure the pads didn't break in properly on the test bike, or they got oil on them. Sometimes brake pads just get glazed, and they don't bite properly. Simply putting aftermarket pads would likely solve the problem. The seat isn't a deal breaker, they probably make at least 1 aftermarket flat seat for it.

  • @Ritalie
    @Ritalie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review. It feels like we are caught in a stupid era of motorcycles. Since 2003, motorcycles have had ugly muffers, and terrible headlight schemes. Remember in the late 1990's, bikes has 2 very large front headlights? Who was the idiot that said "let's put smaller, more useless headlights on." Or "let's put a Buell muffler on our sport motorcycle to make it look like total dog shit!" If you go back to the exploding Kawasaki ZX-12. The ZX-12 had much better bodylines and overall design than anything made today. We seem to be in a confused, experimental stage, where you get tiny headlights, too many buttons, ugly TFT screens that nobody asked for, and horrible Buell mufflers. Not to mention, still no overdrive gear in 5th and 6th. (WTFF??)

    Very nicely reviewed, thanks. I'd agree with the part on the speedometer too, I didn't particularly fancy the design, and the single-sided lamp, i don't understand why they do this. I guess one lamp's gonna burn out faster than the other. As for the seat... well, i ride an MT-07, seat's not soft enough either for long distance. If they have an option for a 'comfort' seat, they might as well have just integrated them into the package since it's a GT anyways.
    I can appreciate the rest of the plus points, and given that I'm almost 1.8m tall, it's good to know that it'll fit well.
    One question tho... any buffeting at higher speeds, say maybe 140-160kmh? Cheers.

    • @myousic4564
      @myousic4564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They've been doing single sided lamp for years and there is a safety reason. Imagine driving a car at night, you want to overtake someone and you see 2 small lights close to each other on another lane coming your way. A lot of people would think that it's a car far away but it would be a bike...

    You are the best, simply the very best!
    You said while others are too chicken to even look at that hideous idea of one headlight.
    YAMAHA, THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!
    Yamaha has ruined the bike, it belongs in the toilet! Simply because of those headlights. And why o why do they always send the bikes out with uncomfortable seats, then they try to sell you a comfortable one!?!? Evil, just pure evil. Seems like they are owned by the same folk who own KTM; damn greedy nickel and dimers!

    Another company that cynically fits a dis-comfort seat so that you have the opportunity to spend more money with them replacing it. I can only assume they spend so much time playing with electric gimmickry that none is left to test-ride their bikes properly to find out whether minor things like the seat, screen visibility, brakes, lights, footpegs etc actually function properly for a supposed long-distance tourer. The bike could be so much better if it did the basics as well as it does the bells and whistles.

      As fellow FJR pilot also looking at this and the news about the quickshifter in particular is great because I'm used to my flappy paddles. Final drive on this is chain. I love the solid feel of the FJR but realistically the Tracer would feel like a go-kart in handling compared to the bulk of the FJR. In this review the brakes sound like something I experienced on a Bandit which I did not like at all and could not fix, seating needs to get sorted so unless those bits are addressed in a test ride I'll just wave from my FJR.
