  • Happy 810NICLE day everyone!
    This year's celebration is all about the 2004 storyline and the mysterious city of legends - Metru Nui. In this video (originally broadcast on the 810NICLE day livestream - www.810nicleda...) we dive deep into an analysis of the iconic centre of that city - the Coliseum.
    New Bionicle Science investigations every month. What part of Bionicle lore do you want to see investigated next? Give your suggestions in the comments below!

    Hi everyone - I’ve got a correction
    In this video, one of my calculations was the potential floor space of the Coliseum, figuring that if it had 870 floors like I previously calculated, each floor would reduce by 1/870th due to the tapered nature of the building.
    However, after some peer review in the comments, it was pointed out to me that this only works if the Coliseum tapers to a point at the top, which it doesn’t, instead having a flat top at the stadium. This in turn made me underestimate my floor area calculations, particularly at the top of the Coliseum where the difference would be more pronounced.
    Instead, what I should have done was account for this flat top by finding the difference between it and the base (both already calculated in the video) and then divide that by the number of floors to get my reduction factor.
    Re-running those numbers again, we instead get a final potential floor space of the Coliseum of 1,662 square kilometres - or 1.8 times larger than the land area of the rest of the city. That’s up from the 1.6 times larger than the rest of the city I quoted in the video.
    Turns out, the Coliseum was actually even bigger than I thought too!

    10:47 I don't know how I never realized this would be how to fix the field/stadium height vs tower height discrepancy until you mentioned "open air" and it all started to click. I had just assumed this was at ground level, but on the top floor(s) just under the spires makes way more sense.
    Now that we have the measurements of the Akilini Field we could calculate the actual population of the city, as there is no way there are only 1,000 Matoran in those stands

    Turns out you can get a lot more ambitious with your civil engineering projects once you have access to magic metal. ^^'
    Scale in BIONICLE is always so weird - the Coliseum is a building comparable to the highest mountains on Earth, while the city it's in is just the size of a moderately sized human town. But it's located in a dome that is just so, so, *so* much larger than it would have to be to house the island, regardless if you go by Faber scale or Farshtey scale. And despite that, most of the interior of the GSR is not part of the dome megastructure but is stuff like EP pipes and power cables and plants and actuators and generators and engines and and and
    The GSR is one of the most fascinating fictional locations/structures ever imo. And so much of it still unexplored in both canon and fanon. And then you realize it is so fascinating because it's based on the human body, something all of us have, and which is no less complex and mysterious in its workings.
    I'm rambling, but that's because I love this story because it makes me dream and wonder. And I love how much love and passion this community still holds for it. Thank you for this and all of your videos!
    Happy 810NICLE day, gathered friends!

    That onscreen note about the calculation being full potential floorspace stopped me from posting the comment I was going to make about the power plant. Well played. An excellent video.
    Also, I guess I always assumed the stadium was located somewhere next to the Coliseum and just didn't appear on maps. But the top makes some sense, I suppose. Makes the maps more consistent. Just makes it weird to me that the Toa were able to get up to the top and walk onto the field possibly without being noticed? I guess that's easier on game day.

  • @prcervi
    @prcervi หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    i imagine several floors are also turned into one massive room to hold larger project and exhibits, and maybe some of those floors you see on skyscrapers where they aren't really floors and are mostly for access to important structural bits
    also i wonder what the wind drag is at the top, plot armor is really the only reason the coliseum hasn't collapsed yet

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would imagine they also constructed it out of materials stronger than what we have access to, like the various forms of protodermis. Keep in mind that the entirety of the island is housed inside the head of the Great Spirit Robot (with room to spare) and that robot itself is as tall as a moderate sized planet's diameter, so the structural engineering needed for the coliseum was as simple for the Great Beings as ... well ... as us building a Lego house.
      That also ignores the notion that the city and coliseum do, in fact, exist inside of a massive enclosed space that, presumably, has some sort of artificial environmental manipulation to be able to control things like wind drag at the top of the coliseum. Though... even enclosed and controlled, the sheer size of the sphere inside the GSR head would mean some natural, or pseudo-natural, weather patterns could form on their own.

    • @prcervi
      @prcervi หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Dargonhuman i swear i remember weather patterns being a thing mentioned in the books, though there inevitably will be some from just the heat of the massive forge and icy cold around the knowledge towers (question mark on humidity because the sea around there is still protodermis))

    So ignoring drag and assuming 1G, if you were to jump from the primary spires it would take about 30 seconds to fall to the ground. From the higher spire it takes another 6 seconds after. I don't know exactly what the real fall time from either of those would be. You probably need to calculate acceleration due to gravity, how long it would take to reach terminal velocity, and once you are at terminal velocity how long does it take to cover the rest of the distance. And I don't know if a Bionicle terminal velocity is the same as a human. For that matter I don't know if they have the same gravity as Earth

  • @lukestarkiller1470
    @lukestarkiller1470 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Now I’m just wondering how much area is in the archives below the city, but I don’t think there are enough descriptions to really calculate that. But given how large Metru Nui is and the fact that the archives extended across the entire land mass and even out under the Silver Sea in some places, it was definitely a very huge area. And when you add the fact that there were lots of different levels of most likely equal size, it definitely makes a lot of sense how they could easily have a complete collection of every rahi known to the Matoran, and still be so large that even the Onu-Matoran who spent their whole lives down their could still get so lost in it that they would never find their way back out.
