    A mini super-group here.
Klaus Voormann, hung out with the pre-fame Beatles in Hamburg in the early '60s. Bassist for Manfred Mann and the John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, and many many other acts. Drew/designed the Beatles' Revolver album.
Jimmy Webb on piano. Jimmy wrote some of the biggest hits of the '60s, Up Up and Away (In my beautiful Baloon), Several hits for Glen Campbell (Wichita Lineman, By the Time I Get to Pheonix,,,), MacArthur's Park, All I Know....
Herbie Flowers played bass. He played the classic bassline on Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side, Essex's Rock On, and he did a lot of work with the solo Beatles.
Jim Gordan, the drummer, was the drummer for Derek and the Dominoes. He played on the Beach Boy's Pet Sounds. He was the drummer for Frank Zappa on his most famous album, Apostrophe! Played wu=ith Johnny Rivers, Art Garfunkel, Steely Dan....

Kudos to Imadrummin for the track selection, and for Harri's reaction! This is truly an unbelievable track. Harri Nilsson is a fascinating artist. I only heard his hits in the early 70's, but have learned through a documentary I saw on his life that he was a studio-only artist. To what that documentary suggests, he did not do live performances, which is interesting. The only other musical act to famously become a studio-only band was the Beatles when they stopped touring in 1966.

The musicians on the basic track were Nilsson (piano), Chris Spedding (guitar), Herbie Flowers (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums). Flowers recalls that Nilsson gave only vague instructions: "lots of tom-toms, a bass riff in D major." The bass part includes a section where, following Gordon's drum solo, Flowers detunes as he plays. According to Flowers, he began loosening the bottom string "for a laugh", believing that by that point in the song, the performance would be faded out on the released recording. Overdubs on master take included Nilsson's vocals, guitar solos by John Uribe and another rhythm guitar part, by Klaus Voormann.

The man for whom John Lennon declared in 1968 "Harry Nilsson for President[!]". Later they were notorious drinking buddies in John's "Lost Weekend" in 1973. The both of them were thrown out of a comeback comedy performance of the Smothers Brothers. They knew each other well. John certainly is on record during his time in the Beatles as citing Nilsson as his favorite then current artist.

Kind of surprised this was played for a reaction. This song was on the only album he released (1971) - while he was alive - which contained 2 top singles: Without You & Coconut. Personally I thought this was a great song with nice drum solo towards the end. He died in 1994 of a heart attack (RIP) while working on what ultimately would be his last album which wasn't released for many years after his passing. He disliked concerts and was one of a few musicians/singers whom enjoyed moderate success without going on tours/concerts.

I have read that the bassist Herbie Flowers actually just detuned the E string during that low and dirty part of the song and then re-tuned it to normal tuning at the end. He did it at first as a gag but everybody loved it so much they kept it in the song.

  • @ajaxfernsby4078

I knew you’d like this one. In 1970, Harry Nilsson made a concept album called “The Point” about a boy named Oblio and his dog Arrow. There is nothing like it anywhere. All good songs but you can’t (shouldn’t) pull one song out of context and play it. You MUST hear it from beginning to end. Now, if that does not fit the format of your show, you should hear it for yourself anyway. I promise you, you will be delighted and it will endear you to Nilsson forever as the writing is very clever and the songs will leave you smiling for days. Oh, one more thing, inside the original album is a book of narration and illustrations but like a year later someone made an animation which you can find online.

This recording is one of my favorites and hearing it with your fresh ears was a pleasure. The backing band is an all star affair, and as you say, after Harry, Herbie Flowers and Jim Gordon on bass and drums just dominate. The secret star of this track is whomever had the idea to take a four minute one chord jam, edit the multi track arrangement through the console, and essentially invent what we call the 'remix".

The drum solo on this track was by the now incarcerated Jim Gordon (also co-writer of Eric Clapton's "Layla"). Gordon murdered his mother but was diagnosed with schizophrenia & is still in the medical wing of a prison in CA.
Gordon's drums graced many great songs through the 70s because as a drummer he was superb.
Herbie Flowers is the bassist. Flowers added bass to many classic rock albums by numerous famous artists.
Of course, Nilsson was always admired by The Beatles for his classy way of writing songs & though he seldom performed live, his recordings were excellent. Nilsson Schmillson even features some of The Beatles (George & Ringo).
The late John Uribe played the lead guitar. He worked with many major artists.

Wasn't Gordon part of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen's tour for Cocker?

@@denniswatson455 - Yes, Dennis -- he played alongside drummers Jim Keltner & Chuck Blackwell.
Gordon also played with Traffic -- the live LP "Welcome To the Canteen."

Yes . Jim Gordon was the man to play drums on your album in the '70s . As well as Nilson he played on albums by Clapton (Layla ) Steve Winwood ( 2 Traffic albums ) Jack Bruce ( Out of the Storm ) and many , many others . Great drummer .

I owe my knowledge of this song entirely to the movie "Goodfellas". Ray Liotta (RIP) looking up through his windshield as the police copter trails him around. This song was not played on the radio in the 70s in the Western US when and where I grew up. Those fools!

I don't know why, but I've always associated Harry Nilsson's kind of music to that of Norman Greenbaum.
