  • Navy Veteran Charles Samas saw combat on both sides of the globe. In the campaign to free Africa and Southern Europe from Nazi occupation, Charles endured German submarine and air attacks - ultimately culminating in the sinking of his ship. But he wasn’t finished. After returning home for a short time, Charles was then sent to the Pacific theater where he encountered the Japanese Armed Forces through brutal island invasions and kamikaze attacks.

Probably one of my favorite interviews. Hearing how coherent he still is about the war and almost at peace is talking about his service and the time he served is pretty remarkable. I am sure there's stuff all these vets will take to their grave on what they saw in true detail and likely have PTSD thinking on it and will never talk to a soul about but to hear the general ideas what the common veteran went through in one of thousands in a battle is quite revealing as always.

My barber (passed on now in 2011) was a WW2 Navy Vet and was active in the ETO and The Pacific. Was a Navy Medic/Corpsman. He was in England for the D-Day invasion and took care of the wounded (Allied and Axis both). He said the flamethrowers were horrible.
After D-Day he went back to the states where he was then shipped to the Pacific. He was on a hospital ship off the coast of Iwo Jima during that campaign. He was also on a hospital ship off the coast of Okinawa during that campaign. It was during the Okinawa campaign his hospital ship dodged a torpedo from a submarine (they think it was a midget sub).
I should also mention that he saw the first US flag go up on Mt Suribachi Iwo Jima. He was out on the upper deck of his hospital ship having a cigarette break and was watching the battle through a pair of binoculars and saw the first US flag being raised on Suribachi.
Rest easy Fred. Fair winds and following seas.

My Uncle Tony was a Navy Seabee and saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, and Salerno. He was subsequently transferred to the Pacific theatre where he got to see Iwo Jima. My Uncle Chester was a Marine at Iwo Jima. The brothers never knew they were together on Iwo, until after the battle when they met in Honolulu.

I had a friend by the name of Raymond DuBose. He was in the Army, (Infantry). After fighting the Japanese, elements of his unit were transferred to the European theatre, just in time for the Battle of the Bulge, where he and others were captured and spent 6 months in a German POW camp. He showed me the Japanese souvenirs which he had sent to his Mother and Father from the Pacific. He told me what he could talk about. This was in 1981. Raymond has since passed away. He was a good, honest man who was the epitome of good and honorable. A real gentleman. He was my friend, as well as I was his friend. Faron. Raymond’s last name may have been spelled, DuBouise. I just can’t remember.

Major General Lawton Collins also fought both enemies. If I remember the history correctly, one of the divisions which would land in Normandy on D-Day had not had combat experience nor did their officers, so Collins who got the job done quickly in the Pacific island hoping and earned the nickname Lightning Joe, was sent to England to join that inexperienced division, which, after the invasion itself, took the port of Cherbourg.
My uncle Eugene was also in the Navy, won a medal for saving the life of an admiral who was choking and had passed out. Later, he was aboard a ship when the Japanese suicide squadron calling itself the Divine Wind, started crashing into our ships. He was not actually wounded but was knocked around so badly that he had all his teeth knocked out At the end of the war he went home to his parent's farm and knocked on the door. One of his sisters told me that she answered the door and he looked so totally different from living in fear for so long plus not having teeth, and losing his hair, that she didn't know who he was and he had to tell her. It was good to be home but he was changed. My dad was his older brother and served in the US Army Air Corps and when the two of them were at home after the war, people who saw them thought that Eugene was a middle aged man. Then the Korean War started and he up and joined the Marines and was at the Chosin Reservoir when the enemy surrounded the Americans. With little to eat and suffering from pneumonia and severe frostbite, he was evacuated on the last plane out. Flown to Tokyo for treatment, he learned that his wife had abandoned their child and was divorcing him. That, combined with his condition in Korea and what he had suffered in the Pacific, he literally went insane and became the town drunk for a while. But something miraculous happened and he stopped drinking immediately, became a Christian and a productive member of the community. He had been a brilliant mathematician and had focused on being a free lance accountant and investor before Korea, and after becoming sober he started his own business and did well after that.

The part that affected me most was when he met the German pilot that bombed his ship and he had no ill feelings towards him, because he was just doing his duty.
That is one reason war is so terrible, because regular folks have to risk their lives, sacrifice so much, and have to fight because of evil enemy leaders grandiose ambitions of greatness and more power, (currently Putin's invasion of Ukraine as an example)!

I have so much respect for all those veterans, they really had a big big challenge to overcome and so much brave and patriotics young man, off course in the war you kill or be killed, as he said, he saw and lived some kind of scenes and emotions so fast so bad that will haunt you all your life, the loss of friends, kill other man, or kamikaze, or close combat fight where you fight and put a knife in the enemy body as you fight for your life and he too, as primordial beast killing each other and looking at him in the eyes as the horror of the moment evolve and a distorted face and a loud cry of the other man knowing life is leaving his body. He is so a hard man, there are no more people like them, they lived it, fought it and died in it. Survived was a benediction but the atrocities you were part inside it, are living it,just destroy you. Respect and thanks for what you all did. May god bless you , all your comrades, your family and hope that all of you after that lived a full life, knew the blessing to be alive.
