    When talking about the tremolo options for an SG you left out my personal favorite, the Maestro Vibrola. It feels great and isn’t awkward like the Sideways Vibrola or bulky like the Bigsby.

      Ive been VERY seriously considering routing out my G400 for a middle pickup and running it with three humbucker-sized P90-or-otherwise-single-coil pickups. Right now I've got a H90 (buckersized p90) in the neck and I love the sound.
      Aesthetically and in practice, I think a classic "reverse" Firebird with Fender Jaguar style triple singles and controls would be awesome. Theyre already tonally closer to Fenders than the SG & LP are, too.

    Great video. Good to know about this option. Roller bridge sounds like a good idea.
    FYI, Bigsby does make "mod free" adaptor plates for lots of guitars. For some Gibsons, the adaptor mounts onto the existing post bushings. The Bigsby mounts onto the adaptor, then over the edge and the Bigsby's hinged end section secures by using the strap button hole. None of it touches the front of the guitar and is slightly stood off the body at the strap button hole. The stand off is a bit bigger diameter than the button and most likely, will leave a mark.
    Still a Bigsby for tuning stability (iffy ???). Then.... expensive and relatively heavy.

    They sell a non permanent solution for the bigsby vibrato. It's called the vibramate. Basically they are a frame that sits under the bigsby that screws into the tailpiece holes, and if you decide that you don't want a bigsby, you could just take it off. It's amazing, they make them for most bigsby models.

      He's not going for a classic strat sound though, he's going for a hotrod, like someone took a fender and refitted it with a couple of PAFs, that's even in the title of the video and he mentions it at the beginning. However I do agree scale length works against him slightly there, and there's no easy way to stretch the scale length on an SG. You can compensate pretty effectively by picking closer to the bridge and even by moving the pickups towards the bridge... until you come up against the bridge and then you can't go any further. I think it gets pretty darn close though.

    • @williamthomson7624
      @williamthomson7624 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amateur experts on parade. Scale length has nothing to do with it. I play a Strat with a 24 ¾” scale neck and it sounds exactly like it did before I installed it. Educate yourselves by experience. The tone difference resides in the pickups and their dimensional relations to the bridge and each other. Stock single coil pickups have half the magnet width and about half the passive resistance of humbuckers so they pass higher frequencies at less amplitude. Scale doesn’t matter and wood species doesn’t matter.

But locking tuners, rollerbridge, with the dusenburg, sounds like the way to go! I especially like, how it uses the holes for the stopbar tail piece. OK this is yet more awesome than you say, here: I have struggled with Trem since I started 40 years ago. Yes, 40 years- I've gone from strat style, to Floyd style, to Jazzmaster style- all to no avail. I am not good at playing with Tremolo, and I'll take that- but here's another factor- I'm left handed.So, we lefties almost always get the crapty version. We get the "squire" version, the "mid price" option, etc. Duesenberg makes a left handed version! It's selling for 10 more euros, so it still has the "lefty tax" but, it appears to be the exact same specs- so, yeah, this is awesome!

    This is a great product demo, and it adds some really cool flair (and vibrato, for those who need and want it) to the SG!
    ... but Imo, it doesn't turn the SG into an HH strat, but it's probably as close as you can get without tearing the instrument apart and modifying it to be 25.5 inch scale, which I'm sure is an engineering feat that might be more easily and cheaply accomplished by simply building a new instrument -- with the added bonus of then having a second instrument.

    I have the exact same "Duesenberg Les Trem" bridge on my "ESP/LTD EC-1000FM Deluxe". I installed it a bit over a year ago, and I'm extremely satisfied with it.
    I had to add a "Schaller STM Tunamatic Roller Bridge", and an "Earvana graphite nut for ESP/LTD" to get rid of most every intonation issues (the guitar originally came equipped with high end locking tuners). And with a tiny bit of nut lubricant (specially for the G string), the guitar has no tuning issue whatsoever, even when abusing the tremolo.
    For some people, the "con" may be that you don't have a whole lot of tremolo "range" ... it's more like a "Bigsby" kind of tremolo action than a "Strat" tremolo action, and certainly never the range of a "Floyd Rose" tremolo action.
    THAT'S IT FOLKS ! HAVE FUN ! PLAY LOUD !

    Cool vid, but I did want to mention that aftermarket Bigsby Trems can be used with an adapter plate so there is no permanent mods required. For the B5 (which is for flat top guitars) the V5 plate is made for SGs to only require the tailpiece posts. Obviously you'd still have all the issues with a nitro finish, just more of it (as the area covered is larger).
    Also, You'd also almost have to upgrade the bridge (Roller or TUSQ) and I'd recommend a TUSQ nut as well unless you only plan on light use like you demonstrated. I upgraded to a TUSQ and it made a phenomenal difference!

    There is a rock artist who played most of his career on a strat style guitar with Gibson humbuckers. It's actually a Hum-single-hum set up and with some other changes but pretty darn close to that exact idea. His name is Kim Mitchell and the guitar in question is a custom built parts guitar called "Blue."

    Well hell!!! Now I have to explain the new SG to my wife!! Thanks a lot Phill! 👍🏻. Oh and your off a little on the Bigsby vibe that tremolo gives your SG. It’s a cool 😎 smooth & swanky look 👀 all it’s own. Great video...

    I have this system on a gold lp studio with p94s and i love it so much. I honestly have no idea why gibson don't do this kind of thing themselves. Fender seems to be doing great with making quirky vintage-ish guitars that aren't true historics.

  • @gr3g0r5
    @gr3g0r5 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a great system. I use it on a Les Paul Goldtop and it look and feels like it was allways supposed to be there. I unly noticed that high-e string breaks fairly quickly, right at the ballend. But i just switched to bullet ends and now it works perfectly.

    Nice, i have a Duesenberg Caribou and the Tremolo is the best i ever tried, no tuning issues like with a Bigsby and far more range.
    But the Duesenberg saddle is very good aswell, that's maybe one of the reasons why i can do crazy dive bombs and still be in tune.

    I installed one of these on my 70's tribute SG. The only drawback to me is the forward placement of the arm attachment, which is designed I think primarily to clear the volume control on the Les Paul, which makes it a bit crowded for palm muting.

    From Leo: That looks like a good option. I mounted a Bigsby to an SG. It gave the playing options I wanted, but the Bigsby and vibramate is a lot of bulky hardware to reach over on a small solid body guitar. I ended up taking it off. The Duesenberg system does not look like it would get in the way.

  • @michaeldorman

    I have one in a Firebird kit guitar I put together, and like it; it seems well-built, and paired with a Schaller roller bridge it stays in tune well.
    My only complaint is that the bar feels very obtrusive compared with a Stratocaster; if I had it to do over I'd mount it a couple of inches further back on the body in the hopes that would make it feel less in the way.

    Phill, here is my two cents. To make the most versatile Strat check out what Darrell Braun did on his Ultimate Epiphone make over using P rails and push pull pots, the best of three worlds, p 90s, humbuckers, and single coils in one guitar, with the neck profile of your choice. Looks like my next project! Blessings man. Dave

    I never had the Bigsby problem mentioned here.

    I’ve wanted to put a trem on my SG for a while and that’s a great option. I do like the look of the Maestro on a SG but I bet the Duesy works great and no new holes. I was a Strat player for years and I’ve went more and more towards Gibsons in recent years and I do miss the tremolo on my Strats.

  • @alpeterson

    Something to note: I have one of these and it’s absolutely fantastic, but it does have a small fit challenge with a 67 style SG because of the large pickguard. The baseplate of the trem overlaps where the pickguard reaches because 67 style guards go underneath the bridge on those models. So to make it work you have to use washers to slightly raise the trem so it’s above the pickguard or notch the pickguard (which would be best done on a second guard not the original). I have both styles of SG’s so I put it on my 61 style instead of the 67 style one, easy for me. But if yours is a typical SG Standard which most years means the 67 style large guard version, you wanna consider that up front. Any other style of Gibson/standard TOM bridge guitar I can think of doesn’t have that issue other than the 67 style SG Standards.

    yes, it is nice. I saw another install vid- the guy used the wrong size flathead screwdriver and marred the post. This was a great vid. Especially pointing out all the things to remember/know- the nut cut, the washers, the felt with nitrocellulose, etc. I might put one on a 2015 Paul. I have an older style Stetsbar on my 1985 Paul. But, I don't like the new design with the plate cut short of the rear of the trem. Thus, why I am leaning to the Duesenburg- Simple, great design, Looks sweet- not just a mass of metal.

    • @chriswallace9387
      @chriswallace9387 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a fixed arm on my Stetsbar which is on a Paul, And I just put the guitar in the case and close it- But it will depend on how high you adjust your arm angle. If your like most people- no effect and no adjusting necessary to put your guitar in a case. I know I compared an apple to an orange (twice)- but they are fruit. Hope this helps!

    The mim Blacktop Strat is the ultimate HH Strat which is why I bought it. With its 5 pos switch you get so many different tones its ridiculous. I could only afford one guitar and I chose the most versatile I could find. I still have not seen any other guitar with this setup.
