Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his henchmen find their getaway hampered by Professor Xavier's (Patrick Stewart) thought control.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
One of the most popular superhero teams in comic book history finally comes to the screen in this big-budget adaptation of the long-running Marvel Comics series. Psychic Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) leads a school of skilled mutants called X-Men, a peacekeeping force to safeguard the world against a race of genetically mutated humans known as Homo Sapiens Superior. However, Magneto (Ian McKellen), a mutant with a powerful magnetic charge, has also begun to organize a team to strike first against what he believes to be a threat from humanity. In this scene Magneto says, “They’ll have you in chains with a number burned into your forehead.” Then in X-Men: Days of Future Past the film opens with most Mutants as prisoners with an M burned into their faces.

Erik would never do any real harm to Charles and Charles would never let anything bad happen to Erik. They are both equally powerful mutants with great respect for one another. They both want the same thing but have vastly different ways in achieving that goal. They are like brothers and that's where a great parallel is drawn between them.
What I love about the relationship between them is their powers influence their personalities, just as normal people's strengths and weaknesses influence theirs. Magneto is all about force, because he literally controls one of the fundamental forces of the universe. Charles is the mind reader and telepath, so he's all about convincing people. The interesting thing is that they're damn near unstoppable when they're together.

I just realized the brilliance of this scene. He says “I can’t stop them all.” He’s not lying, but not for the reason you’d think. Magneto can tear up buildings he’s definitely powerful enough to stop a few pounds of metal, but you gotta remember, bullets are made of lead. Lead isn’t magnetic. He can’t stop them not because he’s not powerful enough, he can’t stop them because bullets are non magnetic. The one bullet he does fire is a 9x19mm, which police forces often use with full metal jackets, meaning the lead bullet is coated in a harder metal shell. He feels all the guns looking for one using full metal jacket and uses that specific one to makes his threat. Very smart writing
Professor Xavier earlier in the movie while talking to Logan describes *Magneto* having capability to bend *METAL* .... He didn't mention that Magneto can only bend things with MAGNETIC Properties .... And *Lead* IS Metallic, so this scene should have nothing to do with MAGNETIC.
Magneto's power is actually pretty, lame
You might be reading too much into it.
The way I always interpreted was that, since bullets are very small, fly very fast and their targets are very close, he needs a lot of focus to stop one at the right time.
So, though he most definitely can fire all the stationary guns at the same time, his mind might not be able to focus on all the little fast moving bullets at the same time in order to stop them.
He's essentially saying that, if the professor doesn't let him go, he'll gamble the policemen's lives on something he himself might not be able to do.
Any metal can exhibit magnetic properties by passing an electric current through it or in the presence of a rapidly expanding or collapsing magnetic field. The effect is temporary but definitely real. And Magneto does seem to have the ability to do all of that, plus at considerable range.
Yeaaaaah no, Magneto's power means he can bend ALL metals, not just ones that are magnetic. But I appreciate the English exam style over-analysis of the scene!

Erik isn't speaking in hypothetical either, he's speaking from experience, having survived a concentration camp.
He's seen the absolute worst humanity is capable of, for far more trivial divisive traits than the gifts mutants have.
It's easy to see his position, but the irony of it all is that he accuses humans of acting out of fear, when he is doing the exact same thing, and through his own fear is justifying humanity's fear and creating something of a self fulfilling prophecy.
Thats what makes him such a compelling villain to me, and what gives that line such power.

His daughter, Scarlet Witch, does the same thing in Avengers Civil War at the airport battle scene Vs Ironman. She clings a whole bunch of cars at Iron man and in Wandavision, Episode 9 she throws a car at Agatha Harkness as well.🔴

At first I thought that Jean stopped the bullet with her telepathy, then I actually paid attention to what Magneto said right after Jean looked at Xavier, shown here at 1:52:
"I don't think I can stop them all."
So it was actually Magneto himself that stopped the bullet just enough to dig slightly into the officer's brow, all to prove a point.
It’s not that magneto isn’t able to stop that much metal, he was able to lift the Golden Gate Bridge, If you watch film theory, magnetos weakness is a gun because most rounds aren’t metal, they’re made of a different casing so magneto CANT stop them all because they’re not all metal, that’s why he also looked around to try and find which round was metal
You forgot that Jean is a telekinetic. She could've stopped the bullets too. I believe that she was holding them back.

The most important part was cut out "Still unwilling to make sacrafices, that is what makes you weak" you see that sums up Magneto entirely and what is in all essences the differences between Xavier and Eric. Xavier wants peace for his people but peacefully, Eric wants peace for his people whatever it takes. Sacrafices, war, death are necessary in his mind.
Actually Magneto wants Mutant superiority. As in enslaving humanity, destroying it, or turn them all into mutants.

He WOULD rather have peace but in his mind it is naive to think that way if most humans think they are no nothing then monsters while they are, in his opinion, the next stage of human evolution. Magneto thinks it will be a war of extermination, a war of us or them.

Xavier needs NON-MUTANT people working for him at the mansion to drive the human/mutants message to everyone.
Xavier being a good guy really comes with a steep price.
He could have easily messed with Magneto's mind before this
happened and convinced him to become an X-Men.
A case of having all the power to end human-mutant issues yet being too noble to go down that road.
Any time Xavier has messed with someone's head like that, it's ended badly. It's one thing for him to freeze someone, take over their minds temporarily or even erase a small memory--it seems to be quite different to get someone to go against their own nature, especially for the long-term. Xavier's mind control really isn't designed to change a person at their core and when he tries, it seems to just make things worse.
Rien Jen Couldn't he just wipe their memory clean though and it'd effectively do the same thing? Magneto's entire identity would be gone.
Didn't Xavier wipe Eric's mind after what he did to wolverine? If memory serves right this lead to Onslaught.
Because Xavier didn't wanna take over Erik's mind and will, he wanted to see if Erik could change by himself without trying to brainwash him.
That would have helped but Xavier is a good guy, he only wanted to see the best from Erik.
Thats what separates someone like Charles from someone like Erik
A real hero accepts massive personal sacrifice in order achieve their ultimate goals, while a villain forces others to suffer for them.

That crossed my mind when I watched this again, and would've made more sense, but the rest of the movie wouldn't have happened if that was the case. xD
Because Magento wouldn't have needed even a second to give the order the instant Sabertooth or Toad tried to reach the helmet the guns would go off and kill those guys.
Mind can react way faster than those guys.

It's got to be plastic. Wood is to weak along the grain, and doesn't mix well with combusting gun powder.
@Zabuza Momochi Wood has grain. You know, all those lines in the wood. If you chop into wood with the grain it splits easily. So if you have a wooden chamber meant to contain a powerful explosion it will break along the grain and the gun will blow up.
Or crossbows.
They learned in 3, they used plastic against him.

The main difference is that at least metal does not come back to Magneto and start screaming at him for controlling them, the way the X-men do whenever Charles uses his powers.

The most powerful scene of the entire movie is when he pulls the trigger, frightening, but brilliant!
This scene represents an intriguing ethical dilemma. What is the truly moral course of action for Professor X to take? Should he have killed Magnito then and there?

Yes, Magneto stopped the bullet. That's why he said "I don't think I can stop them all." You see his eyelid twitch just before he fires the gun, too, suggesting he's focusing.

Actually the entire trilogy was filmed from October 1999 to December 2000. Ian McKellen started filming for LOTR in January 2000 when he finished filming X-Men

I've always loved the line "You Homosapians and your GUNS."
The fact that not one firearm ejected a round when cocked means that not one law enforcement officer had a round in the chamber. I never knew any better when this movie came out but after learning a little bit about firearms I can’t unthink how glaring this is. It’s a tiny detail that makes scenes a little more dramatic to the vast majority of the public.
I just realized that Magneto's bullet-on-the forehead bargaining chip was a direct reference to what he did to Sebastian Shaw in First Class!
Considering how Charles was mentally connected to Sebastian when that happened, one would think that Charles was having severe PTSD from this scene.
