Insight and races from the all too short career of the very impressive Danzig, son of Northern Dancer. He was a horse of great promise that was sadly hampered by troublesome injuries.
I'm learning a lot here, really brave horse, Danzig was. It's wonderful that he was a great sire, even though... we couldn't know what might have been.
I see the similarity. Slew and Danzig had similar confirmation and ate up the track when they ran. They way they threw their hooves forward so eagerly. A joy to watch.
Wow, what a find! Thank you so much for posting this. Three starts. Three wins. And it still doesn't begin to sum up Danzig's tremendous superiority. What amazing action. And then that last gear! I will never look at bloodstock agent Joe Brocklebank the same way again when I see him at the sales. Now every time I see him I will think: "That man rode Danzig."
Danzig is descended from a New Zealand horse Carbine, the foundation sire of Danzig, Nearco, Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector, Nasrullah, Nijinsky II (winner of the UK Triple Crown), Royal Charger and Royal Palace. Not a bad set of animals! Carbine is our greatest thoroughbred horse and was a prolific winner also.
he may have only had a short career on the track, but his love juice has been providing much joy and quick horses, for many generations... much appreciated
Danzig will go down as one of the greatest in the breeding shed,oh actually he already is,not bad for a horse with bad legs, which betrayed him on the track.
wow..put a blaze on his face and it's like looking at hard spun..too bad about the bone chips but danzig did leave a huge mark in the breeding shed..i can't wait to see the little hard spun's next spring..he was always my favorite.i wish they had kept him racing for another year..he would have given curlin something to run at..how cool would that have been?
His jockey Joe Brockelbank was from Dublin ireland like myself. He got me fixed up with a job when I went to the states mid 80s a lovely guy who went on to be a very successful bloodstock agent.
Right. Danzig passed those horrid knees to his progeny Hard Spun...not! HS ran in all 3 triple crown races, placed and showed in the 1st two, came back and finished 2nd in the Haskell nosing out Curlin, then goes back to 7 furlongs and wins the Kings Bishop. Sound as hell. Danzig's bone spurs were the product of high impact motion, much like Barbaro's injury. You can not pass on genetics to make bad knees likely. Those dreadful knees mounted more mares and threw more champs than any modern stud.
Bone chips are not a genetic condition? Well, no, but weak bones that are prone to chipping are. ... Danzig has sired some horses who ran for a very long time. He's also sired many that did not. On the whole, with an average number of starts around 13 in a career, I'd say the soundness of his progeny is very average. ... He is, however, the all-time leading sire of stakeswinners, with 200 out of 1,099 registered foals, an absolutely SICK 18 percent.
Luckily, history will judge Danzig as a stud. More US graded stakes winners than any other stud in past 40 years. His progeny, Danehill, is Europe's greatest stud, producing 300 graded stakes winners. Danzig's sire Northern Dancer was extremely sound...all time leading US Stud. Hard Spun has won graded stakes at 8 and 9 furlongs. That is not a sprint. Get your facts straight before giving an opinion.
Lauren Stitch is an expert on pedigrees, considers Danzig this generation's greatest stud Barbaro was a very good horse. Most true horsemen like myself cannot say he was better than Street Sense. Finishing 2nd to SS who had a clear rail makes HS a sprinter? Ghostzapper never won over 8 furlongs until he won the 2004 BC Classic. HS handled 9 furlongs better than Curlin last time out. Lets wait awhile, and remember Lawyer Ron is Danzig's bloodline (Langfuhr)
Really Sad, Danzig horse's generally run well on the turf. I guess if he had a longer carrer he might have been just as good or even better on the turf. Great video.
I agree with you about Danzig 100 percent! I breed racehorses, and I look for nice sound mares to breed. I will not breed to a sub-par stud just to get a sound foal. I have my limits of course about how far I'll go when it comes to a stud's soundness. A horse like Danzig, I would not hesitate to breed mares to him. The TB has had unsound strains in it's blood for generations. buy sound mares!
Whats all this talk about Hard Spun being just a sprinter? That is just ridiculous,2nd in THE 1 1/4 MILE KENTUCKY DERBY!!!! And what the hell is wrong with being a sprinter? A good horse is a good horse.
Very misleading comments regarding Northern Dancer failing to sire a Kentucky Derby winner. As a sire he was so sensational that the Europeans, Japanese, and Arabs bought up much of the best Northern Dancer stock, paying outrageous prices to acquire his progeny. That resulted in the overwhelming dominance of Northern Dancer blood in European and Japanese classic races, thus leaving scant chance for any of his progeny to contest the Kentucky Derby.

What a horse! It's a shame his career was short, but better a short career than a short life.

He was a leading sire in NA. Died 2006.

I worked for Woody when Danzig returned from Aiken at 3. I had the great fortune to shedrow him one afternoon.

it's no wonder that hard spun likes to run up front, he gets it from his daddy!
thanks for posting this nice vid about danzig!

@em1676 Is your horse a mudder? I ask because many horses from Danzig are great in the mud.
