    The first time I was given a Landrover to drive I was told “you don’t steer it, you periodically adjust the direction it wants to go in”

      We traveled over dried flood plains that had had buffalo on them all wet season. Once it dried, it was more comfortable to walk beside the Landy than drive it, sitting in it.

      Land Rovers view steering wheel changes as "requests to be ignored" rather than firm instructions.

      Go on a Advanced 4x4 trip, with the Maverick, new Landcruiser, Isuzu.. and deep water crossing.. drive to other side.. set up camp.. grab a beer and enjoy the show.. 🤪

      I should have added that Richard is brilliant, and his classic car renovations and conversions are simply incredible. The engineering to seamlessly integrate modern high-powered motors into older drivetrains is non-trivial, but the result is beautiful. Would be cool to have links in the description to the FC episodes with Richard’s VW Beetle and Porsche 911 conversions.

      soon as a company sells the motors and batteries from new the prices should drop substantially. The equivelent of a crate motor. there are relatively cheaper conversions. richard in video does kits for beetles minis and land rovers, Swift do now as well the guys that used to build btcc engines. but all the tesla stuff has to come over second hand mainly from US i think he said so costs increase etc. if you are in UK and havent already theres his show Vintage voltage on quest/discovery+ or his you tube channel. , the delorean, and the two old beamers one a bat wing csi replica were exceptional, the bmw isetta looked hilariously terrifying :D sorry for essay i love this stuff

    I was freaked out by the 'play' in the steering wheel, first time I drove my Defender. It makes sense though once you're off road. Without that play the steering wheel would be snatched out of your hands and you'd lurch off to the side first time you drove through a deep pothole, gulley or over a rock strewn track. Despite it all, the easiest of cars to drive. I'd love to electrify my Landy. Maybe one day.

    • @koitorob
      @koitorob 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rubbish!
      The play in the steering is due to general wear and lack of maintenance.
      Replace(if needed) the trackrod ends and take out the play by adjusting the steering box. If that doesn't cure the wandering, then replace it!

    • @ayebrow
      @ayebrow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You need to look up “Dunning-Kruger” before you make the claim that someone else has posted “Rubbish!”. What you have posted suggests that this first class (and very expensive) renovation and EV conversion of a classic vehicle had somehow left the steering in a sloppy, knackered state. As a poster wiser than you has added below, this is not “play” in the steering but deliberately designed-in torsion spring shock absorption, precisely to prevent the wheel being wrenched out of your hand when navigating rough terrain. Richard explains in the video that his goal is to retain as much of the classic vehicle engineering and behaviour as possible when integrating modern EV technology - did you even watch it? Or just scan down the comments to find one you could jump in and insult first?

      That old Landy there had Arm Strong steering & when I learnt to drive I was very quickly taught to Never put your thumb inside the steering wheel or you'd loose it the next time it got a hard yank from rocks or whatever you ran over. Oh yea good times

    Always said old Land Rovers were one of the few vehicles ever made that could be easily adapted to new tech, even if it spent the last 30 years in a hedge somewhere. The fact you can pretty much dismantle every part of one with a pair of molegrips and a mallet means that if it's well enough maintained, there's no reason why we won't still see a few still knocking around 60+ years from now!
    Certainly more environmentally friendly than the current trend of writing a car off after 10 years because it's financially unviable to repair!

    You can easily see where Robert's previous experience of driving Land Rovers for years shone through; he just put his foot down & powered through that ford whereas Jack hesitated slightly.
    I'm extremely jealous of Robert; I learnt to drive in a Land Rover very much like that one, starting out as an 8 year old at about 3am on a freezing cold wet winter's morning while Dad fed out hay to our cows off of the back. And I didn't even do the Kangaroo hop that most drivers do when they 1st start out; I think Dad was secretly quite proud of his VERY young daughter. 😜😅

      I enjoyed that but for now these are toys for the well-to-do. As to farming with battery powered farm equipment, for years to come this will be a pipe dream. Anybody that knows about farming can sort you out on that. Plows, cultivators or any tillage equipment for that matter would have Tesla batteries whimpering in no time. Ditto for combines, forage harvesters, balers or potato diggers.

    • @Jo-Jo8vs
      @Jo-Jo8vs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But you never will go with an electric car on an expedition. Never ever. Imagine being somewhere more than 1000 kilometers away from a valid option to recharge would make me very nervous. With fossil fuel you just have some extra petrol can with you. Not possible with a battery at the current stage of technology. Maybe somewhere in the future. Also if you are underway in a 3rd world country, it's very likely to find a mechanic who can repair your car, esp. when it's an older landrover. No chance with electric. So in Europe where except for rare special cases and all those driving it for fun, an electric Landrover could make sense, in most areas of the world it doesn't.

    Fantastic fun, Robert, Jack, Landies and full on countryside, what could go wrong? Nothing, they're electric.... the diesel Toyota though... 🤔 says it all really 😂
    I did find myself hearing my old dad, who would have turned a hundred on Wednesday, had he lived another fifteen years, tutting somewhat disapprovingly at the water approaches "do not go into water at speed, you don't know what's in there, could be a huge hole or insurmountable boulder."
    He never took a driving test (not required) but was an instructor in the RAF during the war. He got to drive and teach others to drive every type of vehicle - from motorcycles to lorries to steam rollers, in one of which he liked to proudly say he was the only chap to get a puncture! Went a bit too fast, split the roller! 😂 Had some fantastic tales of brake failure in a lorry down a mountain and he taught me everything he could from the age of about three when I was big enough to sit on his lap to steer and change gear with my hands resting on his. The lessons paid off, I became only the second female bus driver on London Transport out of Edmonton Tramway. My instructor paid me the highest complement on my first go: "oh good, you can steer..." yes, apparently its a thing, some people can't, who knew?! Anyway passed first time, gosh that was a long time ago, thanks for the memories chaps, one of your best videos. 👍 😁👏😊

      Well, hate to break it to you but that was staged. That Hilux was not in four wheel drive. Easy to miss for someone with little off road experience but there is no way the Hilux would get stuck on this track. They are very capable vehicles, much more capable than my old 4x4 and I would have made it up there with ease and without spinning a wheel. I think considering it's a European/British off-road video its pretty good. Not like the laughable Rivian review they did the other week. But if you watch some American or Australian off-roading, you'll realize quickly why people trust their very capable ICE 4x4s. Again, hardly relevant in Europe because there is no need for off-roading other than maybe down the paddock on a farm and that's what tractors are for. But if you live in a remote region in a country with less infrastructure, you understand how far away we still are from replacing 4x4s (that aren't lifestyle/show off vehicles) with electric versions.

      OK, maybe the Hilux was in 4x4, looks like a bit of slip in the front, as well as the back. but it definitely wasn't stuck and didn't need rescuing.

      Yeah a troll!!! Did you even watched the video!? The hilux didn’t had any working lock-ins diff and the Land Rover costs about 5 times the hilux in price lol….. go watch out of specs overlanding and watch the 800hp rivian struggle against 300hp truck lol…

      @@carholic-sz3qv With four separate electric motors controlled centrally with no need for a differential,, what value would there be in a differential lock? Yes, they are both very expensive - they were custom one-off conversions. The range on an ICE vehicle conversion is always less than using an EV platform, but for a Land Rover addict, (with lots of money), not a problem!

      @@RobinTFH you are absolutely clueless mate! The rivian electric truck has 4 independent electric motors and still manage to trigger against normal ICE with single diff locks lol…. Just go watch out of spec overlanding or rivian on hills revenge on TH-cam. It’s miserable for a 800hp EV.

    I once drove a short wheelbase Landrover, from the 1950s or 60s, something like 30 odd miles back from the other side of Salisbury to Southampton, and by the time I got back I was exhausted. It had off-road tyres on and went where it damn well fancied. Camber on the road? Oh, that made for tremendous entertainment. I swear It almost giggled at me. There can be a case made for too much character in a vehicle. I imagine an electric one would be just right. 😄
