    VTEC actually engages at 4400 rpm. What you are hearing at 6000 rpm are the butterfly valves opening the secondary intake runners in the intake manifold. Makes me miss my 95 GSR!

    • @mrspencer72
      @mrspencer72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I remembered when I first heard the secondaries open and I thought it was vtec engaging lol.

    • @7eamGhast
      @7eamGhast 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What’s the secondaries? The cam switchover?

    • @tomvang3326
      @tomvang3326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@7eamGhast The GSR has a dual stage intake manifold. It has long narrow runners for low end torque at low rpms. Once you hit 6K rpm, the butterfly valves in the intake manifold open up the shorter larger diameter runners for high end torque.

    • @7eamGhast
      @7eamGhast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tomvang3326 wow, I didn’t know that. This manifold is not present on the Type R motors? Only GSR? Thanks for elaborating I really appreciate it, I just bought a Honda to work on with my son and I want to do a b18c swap with him, in my research I never saw anything about this yet.
      Thanks a lot!

    • @tomvang3326
      @tomvang3326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@7eamGhast No problem, this dual stage manifold was only made for the GSR. The Type R and other B18C motors have a single stage intake manifold.

    “Engaging and fun to drive”. Nailed it. I have a 90 hatch with a B16A and a 2000 GSR. I’ve have 500 HP V8 cars, 350 v6 cars, turbo 4 bangers but the naturally aspirated high Erving Hondas are my favorite.

  • @mrspencer72
    @mrspencer72 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Back in that time 170 hp was sufficient output, especially for it having such a small displacement engine and it being naturally aspirated. Sweet high revving engine, very engaging vehicle to drive, and it surprised many larger displacement cars back then. Sucked that they used to get stolen so much

    • @GsrDc

    That is a very clean GSR for NY state. My unicorn is a 1994 GSR. It was top of the line back then as the Type R wasn't out yet. Mine has 89,600 kilometers on it. I bought it new in June 94. In other words, 1 owner car. I'm in Ontario, so I store it every year in November and often don't put it back on the road much before June. Just like your friend's mine isn't for sale either. I have a 23 year old son chomping at the bit to get his hands on it some day.

    Gorgeous example - that interior free of large screens is a thing of beauty. I believe the keyword here is "engagement". Today's cars offer impressive levels of performance, but the very technology enabling such performance also isolates the driver from the driving process itself. For example, if you enjoy the satisfaction that proper rev-matching brings, why would you want a car that does this for you? If performance is what matters the most, then I can understand, but if driving is your thing, older cars like this are hard to beat. You didn't even get into any twisty roads, where lighter cars like this can shine.

    This is the 2nd gsr video I have found that says stock and then immediately shows changes, like the shifter. (As I was typing this you said suspension also). My 97 is totally stock, if I was going to start changing things I would then go nuts on it. The other video I found, the guy was talking about how much he wanted a stock GSR, and then he changed the air filter to a "performance" filter before he even made the video lol.

    You're off when you go over the Trim levels. The "base" is not the LS. The base model is the RS. No moonroof/cruise control/power locks/ABS/leather. The RS is the model that you want to use if you're going to build your own Type R. The LS is actually an upgrade from the RS.

      Stock just makes it that much rare more valuable... That's why people who have integra type R's and put K20 swaps on them Won't get the value of what it would be if it was original engine and trans.... Of course somebody's always willing to pay for a ITR regardless of that just saying. I have an integra type R championship white JDM right hand drive. Just bought it last year due to some piece of s*** drunk driver hitting me and leaving me there for dead... I'm blessed and curse at the same time.
