Snake Plant Propagation - This Method works BETTER and FASTER than Leaf Cuttings!

  • Snake plant propagation is easy to do but for some reason there is a huge infatuation around propagating sansevieria by leaf cuttings. While propagating snake plants with leaf cuttings can be fun it is not the best method! A lot of people have a high rate of failure with leaf cuttings and they also take FOREVER to grow. That is why i recommend propagating your snake plants through RHIZOME DIVISION. You will see that they grow so much faster and you will also have a near 100% success rate.

Wisconsin Wonder Garden trying to propagate them now using leaf cuttings but I think they’re not going to make it. I don’t think I let them callous long enough. Put them in the dirt too soon. :-(

Gardentastic well you’re not alone! I think it’s just an inefficient method of propagation and rhizome division is just superior. I’ve had a lot of feedback from people not being able to grow them on the leaf cutting video I made. Which is why I’ve been wanting to make this video, to help people choose this method instead of the latter 🌿

@@ExpeditionHomestead the problem is...if you only have ONE plant and you want to grow more, and there are no "babies" with rhisomes, then one cannot propagate it this way! I have several sans varieties that do not have multiple growths to divide. Most people do know about divisions. Same as perennial plants. Some of us are trying to make more of the same SINGLE plant that we have...yes, we are desperate plant addicts...😂😂😂🤦 Yes, I have TONS of the common types of sans. Of course the other problem is some of them revert to parentage when propagating because...well that's just what they do! 😢 Anyway, thanks for the vid on division for beginners 😀

Just a note for all plants after 50 some years of growing things I dont know why potting soil has got so fine like coffee grounds and much of it comes prefertilized. I did that once fertilized forgetting plants I just repotted had it in the soil and almost killed them. For years now I mix cactus soil or playground sand, not outside dirt into my potting soil. No plant likes fine mush dirt. It either dries out or stays wet because you think it needs water. You can get a water gage also at nursery stores. I got one that also doubles with a PH reading. I moved rural high desert 3 years ago where the tap water is quite cold even in summer from the mountains. I add a little warm water to keep it tepid. Especially in winter. Killed 2 from cold shock until a local friend asked me if I water straight from tap in winter. I also pretty much ignore my plants when potted up. Keep them on verge of death. Not really but indoors not many plants need watered once a week. I also double pot. Plastic inside ceramic. Keeps soil warm and moist longer. Dont plant straight into terra cotta. A few times a year or more water plants complete through in sink or outside and let drain to remove salts and build up.

If you look at what the term “propagate” means I think you’ll clearly see that this is a form of propagation. Thanks :) but this really is the fastest method of multiplying your snake plants by far, taking cut segments of the plant instead of rhizome will take about 10x as long to see the same amount of growth. Unless you’re trying to make thousands of plants it’s just not worth cutting the plants leaves into sections. Happy gardening 🧑‍🌾
