Dede Tudor I know right???? I AGREE!!! People used to sleep with their farm animals to stay warm in the winter! I was born and raised with animals and so were my children!! none of us have ever got sick!!
All this 100% antibacterial stuff is no good either! My kids played in the dirt & washed in the rain on beautiful summer days & so did I.
People are getting nuts & lacking common sense. I’m so glad I was raised the way I was!😊👍💗🍁🌾🍂🐿🐁🐇🦎🐝🐛🐔🐸🐣

    Jess,
I want to thank you for helping me overcome one of my biggest struggles. I often find myself procrastinating, at best, but more often frozen by indecision. Always worrying about the best way, time, etc to do something. But you have taught me the value and grace of "just try it". Despite the challenges this year has brought, I'm getting more stuff done and am happier about it than ever. I'm jumping in before finalizing the perfect plan and I'm having very successful results. Now, I haven't gone out and bought any animals to keep in my teeny, tiny suburban backyard but I'm growing and eating more of my own food. I'm enjoying being outside more. And as my husband and I approach retirement, I'm thinking about new possibilities and seeing what happens. Thank you!

Young ginger is the tastiest ginger to eat (you know it's young when part of it is still pink). It's very rare to see it at a regular market. Chefs, like Ming Sai, make a big deal about using it in their creations. You are very fortunate to have grown some, and have a lot of new growth on it. Perfect for stir fry, fresh eating, tea... Look up recipes for it - especially Chinese and Japanese recipes. Very healthy, very tasty. Enjoy your ginger good fortune!

Yes you absolutely can take the smaller shoots , put them in a pot & keep em inside over winter. Heck I had a huge flower pot with a 8 foot ginger plant in it for a whole year. My mother inlaw asked me to care for it & I became the new owner & until I started smelling it & repotted it, I didn't know that I was gifted so much ginger. Yay Me! There was a huge harvest of ginger. LOL.

I love ginger. There is a Filipino dish called "tinola", a type of chicken soup with ginger, unripe papaya and pepper leaves, its my favorite during rainy season so I think its a good recipe for winter. As for tea we have "salabat" its ginger tea sweetened with honey paired with "bibingka", a type of rice cake topped with salted egg or shredded coconut, this is staple during Christmas season in the Philippines. Stay safe Ms. Jess, Ben is such a sweetheart 😊

YEA! for all the ginger. My favorite way to preserve is to chop/grate it into freezer trays, add some water and freeze. Then when frozen, I pop out the cubes into a plastic bag for storage in the freezer and use them in tea, soup, stews, tea, tea for colds, tea for energy, tea for quiet time, tea for getting warm. I LOVE ginger tea but also any tea that has some ginger added. I really should try drying it then grinding it for powder in pies, cakes, cookies, etc. YUM. Favorite cookie is molasses ginger cookie w/nuts. But also, with candied ginger pieces. It is also so good when you have the ick in winter - brew it up strong with honey fermented garlic and a sore throat is gone, head clear, sniffles snuffed.

Petra uses the ginger leaves to make tea also. I live at the farm with my dad who turns up the thermostat on a regular basis so when I planted ginger from petra and followed her instructions with using the grow mat dad had the house so warm it combined with the growmst heat cooked the ginger. Some ginger I had bought at Dillons grocery started sprouting after I had resigned myself to having to wait to try it itill next year and I planted it as a house plant by a east window. It likes it although it hasn't grown as fast as it would likely have grown outside. I figured if it wants to live and sprout that bad who am I to deny it.

Jess, I can tell you you can grow ginger in the house. I did till the labordoodles tail broke it and his mouth finished it off. You have to love a puppy. Also, I have a weather machine that sits on my desk.. it is connected outside right by the garden. Never did the temps get to freezing... close... but not there. We had frost at the end of the drive but no where else. My basil is gone, long beans and loofa, squash -gone. But, get this, my tomatoes are still there!!! My peas are doing better now than they were before. I have no clue what's going on out there.. I'm just very thankful that my sage, parsley, broccoli, cabbage 'tomatoes' and brussels sprouts all look really good! I can honestly say, it's a little odd out there. The tomatoes is what got me the most.
Ben is the most adorable. Cherish it now mom. When my 28 year old son was his size, he was like a little calf.. he never left my side. He took his naps in combines and tractors... he picked strawberries with me.... we were just never apart. He got married and all that changed. Enjoy every moment of it. Now I have a granddaughter Ben's age that reminds me of Ben.. she loves the garden. Another video win!!!

I shred my ginger and freeze it. You can put it in your recipes and tea.

Totally get the tool thing! My dad and brother would use my mechanics tools and I could never find the wrench or socket size I needed. So frustrating! I finally resorted to locking my toolboxes in the trunk of my car. With my adult son, it's my screwdrivers! When I need a phillips, all I can find are the flatheads. No phillips to be found...anywhere. And vice versa when I need a flathead... a thousand years from now, if there's an archeological dig here, they're going to wonder about all the screwdrivers they find LOL.

Jess, try a couple of teaspoons of chopped fresh ginger in your smoothies. It is awesome, especially with blueberries.

I'm going on my second year of planting ginger that came from the store that sprouted. I grow it inside in the winter and take it outside when it gets warm out and keep it like a house plant. The greenery smells so good and it grows fine inside. Tops die back and I get the ginger roots out in the spring. I keep some out for the pantry and replant some.
