#askgcntech Hi Guys, I'd like to know if you can confidently recommend from your own personal experience any shoe covers that are actually water proof (not just 'waterproof' as stated by the brand). My shoes are Specialized Torch 3.0's and I've tried multiple shoe covers that claimed to be 'waterproof'. After one or two rides in properly wet weather, my feet get almost as wet as when I wasn't wearing them. I have also taped the little vent on the bottom of the shoe shut to prevent water from getting in there, and it didn't prevent them from getting soaked. Thanks!
Hi Guys, James here in Northern Idaho, I was wondering if a carbon frame gravel bike (Salsa Cutthroat), could handle a kickstand. I know it's not 'cool' but there's something to be said about accessing your frame/saddle bags on an upright bike. I'm doing the Divide in June and thought I'd ask. If so, are there certain types/specs that I need to look at? Thank you and thank you for your channel. James
I completed a 12hr 235km/4500m Aussie sportive last weekend; the temperature was 35c/95f. Everyone was reapplying 50+ sunscreen at the rest stations as a necessity. Looks like it was 50+ with Octocrylene…. Further GCN research and identification of suitable internationally available sunscreen for endurance riding would be awesome.
In terms of cancer risk, a 12 hour ride without sun protection is much higher than that posed by the breakdown of octocrylenes. If that was what was supplied on 3 Peaks, then you are better off using it than not. That said, if there are better sun screens out there, it is worth investigating them.
Massive effort. a real 'peaky blinder'! And that's underselling it (website says over 4000M vertical, you've said 4500m, everything i've seen on strava says over 4850m!

I live in country with a relatively hot summer and I'm also at about 35 degrees latitude. I cover my skin with cloth. You can buy arm covers that are 100% UV protecting and I've found that they aren't really warmer than bare skin because they are always soaked with sweat. You can also wet them at the start of your ride and the first 20-30 minutes they will provide amazing cooling. For longer rides, I'll periodically just wet them down when I'm refilling my water bottles. You don't need much water. Having said that, it's still a problem for the face, neck and legs.
@@gcntech Yes. 5-6 hours, anyway. It's actually really common in Japan, though it's sometimes hard to find arm covers in larger sizes. Some people I know wear leggings all summer long but I've never found leggings which breath well enough for me. Pearl Izumi makes "Sun Sleeves" which are designed to keep your arms cool. I just now noticed that they also make "Sun Legs"... I'm going to have to get a pair and try them out...
I've had melanoma on my forearm. Since then, I wear light long sleeve jerseys or sun sleeves. I don't race, but haven't noticed a big difference in heat or performance.
Welp... i use only slim long sleeves shirts when riding on winter or summer... its my way to dress and its always better for cooling... if you want just strip up the sleeve and you got a long T-Shirt... if you get cold than unstrip the sleeve and now you have a shirt =P
@@gcntech Yes, I feel safer since the sun is trying to kill me :P. I do have arm warmers for colder weather, but the sun sleeves are actually designed to cool, they are SPF rated, and they don’t wear off like sunscreen.

Aussies should be better at sun protection, but whether the excuse is "i don't burn, i tan", "one application is enough" or "it feels yuck", many often aren't. I've had misses and paid in red stinging skin, so i use arm sleeves or long sleeve jerseys just about exclusively (they're often short and you need to get your wrists with extra protection) and have tried to use leg sleeves as well (haven't found many non-thermal ones, and they are sized for slimmer twiglets), but they sometimes bunch up and chafe painfully on longer rides. The weight obsession in a section of road cycling could be part of it - even on longer rides, cyclists only carry their 'essentials' and there's not room for more than a banana or so. Sun protection often isn't considered as essential as saving 100 grams over 100 km - not a great holdover from the competitive stat 'one-upper' mindset.
I know of a couple that share an indoor bike. They have a frame/stem size that's in between what would be perfect for them - but close enough. But they have separate saddles mounted on separate seat posts, and each seat post has a collar to mark the right height. So they simply swap over the entire seat post and saddle, using a QR, for each rider.
I live in Thailand and the best method is to simply cover your body. Arm sleeves, long socks, hat and neck buff. The locals do this for good reason. 100% effective and chemical-free!
for the indoor bike swaparoo for bikes with different gearing where it turns into a pain, their are the one-gear hubs that can be used with virtual shifting
For a shared indoor trainer bike, you can try having 2 separate seatposts and saddles. Setup one for your saddle height then the other for your partner. In this way you just have to swap out seat posts with saddles already installed depending on who’s going to use the bike. Make sure to mark each seat post height with tape or whiteout , and try to get a quick release seat clamp for faster swapping.
On the subject of swapping bikes on a trainer, when my wife and I both had 11 speed drivetrains with QR’s, we just swapped out bikes in a few minutes time. However, when I switched to a new bike with SRAM 12 speed and thru-axels, I found the best solution to be a Kickr Roller and sold my Kickr. It’s trivial to swap out bikes but does require both bikes to have power meters.
Looks like the Zwift Cog has come to the KICKR CORE. Hope that extends to the other models as this eliminates the cassette, which wears and has to be replaced.
Anyone needing a complete answer should consult the Aussies. They’re masters at sun protection. It’s almost cultural for those folks. Perhaps our hosts could start their search with the host of Zero Friction Cycling. He might be able to recommend an Aussie expert (maybe even at the Australian Institute of Sport).

My wife and I ride the same model gravel bike which we use on our trainer, but hers is a small and mine is a large. Even with thru-axles, it takes me around 4 minutes to swap the bikes, or 5 minutes if I have to install wheels on the one being removed from the trainer. To me, that is a small price to pay to ensure the right fit while avoiding pain and injury. Keep in mind that we don't move around as much on a trainer as we do riding outdoors, so I think that a poor bike fit becomes even more of a problem indoors.
Banana Boat Ultra Sport Reef Safe Spray on. Started using this when I lived in Hawaii. Keeps cool and environmentally friendly. I would use 50 or 100 SPF.
I have several sunscreens that are advertised as "reef friendly." it seems that the chemicals banned din Hawaii are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Octocrylene is not explicitly banned, so it seems to be the substitute used in a lot of sprays and creams sold in the US. I have some newer tubes and sprays from a variety of brands and they all contain Octocrylene. One even says "compliant with HI SB2571." It seems staying away from Octocrylene is harder than we thought...
Probably the highest SPF in the market and good for sports - Sunplay SPF 130, spray on alcohol sunscreen, coating is thin, doesn’t clog, good on sweat and reef safe.
How about speaking with one of the two big cosmetic contract manufacturers in Trowbridge (just down the road from GCN megabase), both of whom formulate sunscreens!
The husband and I had to share his trainer and my bike for a few weeks. Zwift was sending me a replacement Hub and UPS lost it. We couldn’t bike swap because his bike is only an 8 speed and mine is 11. We just changed the seat height. Wasn’t ideal (my bike is 4 sizes smaller), but it worked until UPS got their act together and delivered the replacement of the replacement Hub. I wouldn’t want to do it long term. The seat wasn’t ever quite set the same and caused discomfort
About bike swapping: it was such a nightmare for me to put my bike on and off my trainer in NOV, and now in FEB I don't even think twice. Even forgetting some steps every time it doesn't take more than 5 min for me (I forget to put the chain on the smallest ring or I forget to remove cardboard from the breaks)
@@gcntech One thing you forgot to mention as an option, a stationary bike, instead of a normal bike on a trainer. They tend to be far more adjustable than a normal bike. Might not be the cheapest option though.
I much prefer to use mineral based sunscreens. First off, they just work better at blocking the sun. And because these literally work by reflecting the sunlight, rather than converting it, I believe my exposed skin runs cooler. In other words, the energy from the sun is reflected off my skin rather than being absorbed and therefore heating my skin. The mineral sunscreens also do not have the cancer risk of the chemical sunscreens. As far as possibly interfering with sweating, I have no idea, but have not found that to be an issue for me. Living in Florida sunscreen is a REALLY important piece of kit. I use one from SolRX that was developed for Ironman racing. They have a different method of blending the ingredients that cause the SS to encapsulate the skin cell and dosent wash of without using soap. It lasts all day with no issues. I am not associated with SolRX but will use nothing elas...and it sprays on.
I think you were referring to spray on sun screen, one disadvantage is the small droplets can be breathed in, a concern perhaps more for the young. Lung damage or clogged pores,…?
I was going to make a similar comment ... barely used wahoo kickrs are about $500 in the Seattle area. You can train side-by-side, using a bike that fits you
@@gcntech I haven't bought a 2nd hand trainer but haven't heard about any going wrong, some are very cheap after the lockdown buyers don't want them anymore, 2nd hand bikes could have big maintenance expenses if you don't know what to look for. Does a 2nd bike take up more room than a trainer that folds up ?
The german DM (drogerie markt) SunDance brand had a sport edition a few years back that was alcohol based and a spray on form factor like 4-5 years ago. Unfortunately now they only have a creme one.
For what is worth, I'm a heavy sweater that uses titanium oxide based sunscreen. At the end of a 90 minute ride, it looks like I may have sweated most of it off, but I have not gotten sunburned while using it.
I have sensitive skin and am a heavy sweater. Think brand sunscreens don't cause any rash and it stays on even during long rides. It is mineral based and comes in both a sqpray and lotion. I'm not a huge fan of the spray, though, it tends to clog in the nozzle. :oldmanyell:
@romanluu Blessing in disguise: Since lots of serious riders are shopping for thru-axel wheels these days, you can find some pro-level QR wheels from a few years ago for a great deal! Just make sure they are compatible with your brakes (disc or rim).
#askgcntech I have some carbon dt swiss wheels that have always been rather loud. Lately I noticed the hub has become even louder. Is this is a sign the wheel needs maintenance?
I’ve used Riemann P20 sunscreen for several years. I was attracted by its sweat-proof one-application-lasts-all-day feature, and so far it seems to have offered good sun protection. It’s a pump spray, clear liquid. Is this an example of the alcohol based type that Ollie favours? Anyway, checking their website now, I see that some (but not all) of their products have a new ecologically improved formulation that does not contain octocrylene. I’ll need a new bottle this spring and will definitely make sure to try this type.
A second trainer is probably cheaper than a new bike that has to be bought and then adjusted for not only seat height but stem and bar reach and depth. Or buy a Zwift or Kickr Core with hub 1 and sell your old trainer.

My wife and I share a Stages SB20, and a second seatpost saddle for out inside bike option. It was the best option for us as I am 8" taller than she is so bike size is too much, and he bike is Shimano and I am SRAM... too much moving around for me.
@gcntech I bought a second post, so all I have to do is pull her post out and replace it with the one that has my saddle on it. Take a couple of seconds. Then just adjust the reach to my setup. I use a little painters tape to mark it. Pink for her, blue for me. Then I swap the pedals as she is not a fan of clipless, but all the adjustments take less than 30 seconds. Could not work out better for us
#askgcntech Hi Armando and Ollie. I'm considering going for wider tyres, currently rolling on 28mms, but I'm concerned about the aero penalty of doing so, wheels being optimised for up to 28mm tyres. So, what I've started considering is going wider at the back (to say 32mm) while keeping 28mm up front. While this seemed like a great compromise, i'm now concerned that the larger tyre at the back would also bring up the entire back end, messing up angles and my position overall. Is this a real risk or am I being paranoid?

Talking sunscreen while riding, I have actually stopped using sunscreen on my arms and legs and have moved over to using UPF 50+ sleeves (arm warmer type) My legs don't usually get burnt but I do still use sunscreen on my nose, ears and back of the neck.
#askgcntech if waxing your chain is so great for efficiency and keeping it clean what about waxing a mechanical derailleur? Mine are always getting dirty and maybe dipping it in wax would keep it clean (after scrubbing away all the wax on the outside)
Maybe a long sleeve wicking type shirt (hat, neck shield, etc) that's not heavy, hot, or bulky is a better solution for sun than chemicals. What physiological effects do these chemicals have on the body, and its ability to tan (a natural response to UVA/UVB), it's ability to correctly monitor internal heat, and the lack of immune response to harmful chemicals on the skin? It's one thing to be exerting energy that causes someone to sweat, but as motorcyclists have figured out in the non-exertion world, covering up the body to sun and heat exposure works better than leaving it all out in the sun and wind. A controlled micro-climate is more functional than having hot air and sun baking your hide.

It's not just suncream which is a major environmental health hazard, it's also PFAS chemicals in waterproof clothing. It's a huge issue and one which is being well suppressed by the industry. Have a quick google about it. There's a scandal in Jersey because it's used in Fire Fighting materials and ends up in the water supply causing all kinds of issues.

The question is 2 fold 1- can i put sealant in a tubular tyre as i loath the idea of carrying a spare while out riding? 2- the wheels are 10spd shimarno how do i make it 11 spd campag to suit my bike? I don't know about the ease of getting the bike on and off the trainer.. I hate having to take my 2023 Trek Domane SL5 on and off the Kickr trainer (being specific in case someone else has this issue or can at least confirm this issue). I don't know what they did when designing that bike, but it is an absolute pain to get the thru-axle lined up. There doesn't seem to be much material for the dropouts to sit on the trainer's thru-axle adapters, so it is a faff of shifting the bike around until it finally starts threading (hopefully without cross-threading).
@@kenny4540 Make sure the dropouts sit nicely on the KICKR. Due to the deep dropout recesses, disc brake Trek road bikes are theoretically not compatible with the KICKR, but not if you modify the KICKR's left end cap by removing some material on a lathe only if you never plan to use the 148 mm side of the end cap.
@@sbccbc7471 Thank you for the input. I did not know the bike was not compatible with the trainer ... it seems to work fine. The sun has come out here in the Seattle area. I have removed and replaced the bike on the trainer several times in the last few days. I am getting more efficient. It is not as big of a chose as it once was. One thing I did notice is that noise from "cross chaining" is higher on the trainer (non-existent on the bike)

RE: Sunscreen cooling. Dr. Bridgewood, because I'm a hippie from California, I've avoided the "chemical" sunscreens for ages, always opting for the mineral ones, you know, because minerals are "natural". Hippie mindset aside, the mineral sunscreens work because they reflect UV while the "chemical" sunscreens work by absorbing the UV. Now it might be negligible, but it seems that UV reflecting sunscreen would reduce the amount you are warmed by the sun compared to absorptive sunscreen. Thoughts?
I agree with having one bike on a trainer between two different people. If you had different bikes set up you may have to chain the cassettes every time. All I do at home is have a dedicated seat and post for myself and my wife.
I live in South Africa so plenty harsh sun, since I have changed my diet to carnivore 6 months ago I have not had the need to use sunscreen even through a very hot summer this year. I just don't burn anymore. My work has me outside much of the day through the midday period as well.
We also didn't survive long enough for sun damage or skin cancer to be much of a concern for most of our history. I'd say putting on sunscreen isn't much to ask in light of a life span more than double our distant ancestors.
The math was that during human evolution life expectancy was 33 years. Humans simply didn't live long enough for this to be a major issue. But you do you.

The ultrasun sports gel and spray sunscreens are complient with the Hawaiian laws. They work really well.

Its actually cooling sleeves, and in bright sunlight its demonstrably cooler by blocking the direct radiation @@gcntech
I always wear long sleeves it's laughable protection in case of a slide but it is there nonetheless 😂

Are sun sleeves better than sunscreen?
I share a Kickr with my wife. I can change the bikes over in about 3 minutes. She takes about 10 minutes and therefore always asks me to do it.

Don’t mind. It would be rough sharing a bicycle. She is a foot shorter than me. Rather be comfortable and uninjured

To me, that is a small price to pay to ensure the right fit while avoiding pain and injury. Keep in mind that we don't move around as much on a trainer as we do riding outdoors, so I think that a poor bike fit becomes even more of a problem indoors.
Banana Boat Ultra Sport Reef Safe Spray on. Started using this when I lived in Hawaii. Keeps cool and environmentally friendly. I would use 50 or 100 SPF.

I have several sunscreens that are advertised as "reef friendly." it seems that the chemicals banned din Hawaii are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Octocrylene is not explicitly banned, so it seems to be the substitute used in a lot of sprays and creams sold in the US.
I have some newer tubes and sprays from a variety of brands and they all contain Octocrylene. One even says "compliant with HI SB2571."
It seems staying away from Octocrylene is harder than we thought...

Probably the highest SPF in the market and good for sports - Sunplay SPF 130, spray on alcohol sunscreen, coating is thin, doesn’t clog, good on sweat and reef safe.
How about speaking with one of the two big cosmetic contract manufacturers in Trowbridge (just down the road from GCN megabase), both of whom formulate sunscreens!
The husband and I had to share his trainer and my bike for a few weeks. Zwift was sending me a replacement Hub and UPS lost it. We couldn’t bike swap because his bike is only an 8 speed and mine is 11. We just changed the seat height. Wasn’t ideal (my bike is 4 sizes smaller), but it worked until UPS got their act together and delivered the replacement of the replacement Hub. I wouldn’t want to do it long term. The seat wasn’t ever quite set the same and caused discomfort
About bike swapping: it was such a nightmare for me to put my bike on and off my trainer in NOV, and now in FEB I don't even think twice. Even forgetting some steps every time it doesn't take more than 5 min for me (I forget to put the chain on the smallest ring or I forget to remove cardboard from the breaks)

@@gcntech One thing you forgot to mention as an option, a stationary bike, instead of a normal bike on a trainer.
They tend to be far more adjustable than a normal bike.
Might not be the cheapest option though.

You can get SPDs which are flat on one side and clipless on the other.
I much prefer to use mineral based sunscreens. First off, they just work better at blocking the sun. And because these literally work by reflecting the sunlight, rather than converting it, I believe my exposed skin runs cooler. In other words, the energy from the sun is reflected off my skin rather than being absorbed and therefore heating my skin.
The mineral sunscreens also do not have the cancer risk of the chemical sunscreens. As far as possibly interfering with sweating, I have no idea, but have not found that to be an issue for me.

Living in Florida sunscreen is a REALLY important piece of kit. I use one from SolRX that was developed for Ironman racing. They have a different method of blending the ingredients that cause the SS to encapsulate the skin cell and dosent wash of without using soap. It lasts all day with no issues. I am not associated with SolRX but will use nothing elas...and it sprays on.
I think you were referring to spray on sun screen, one disadvantage is the small droplets can be breathed in, a concern perhaps more for the young. Lung damage or clogged pores,…?
Regarding the indoor trainer scenario, a 2nd hand direct drive trainer would be cheaper or a Zwift/wahoo hub 1, much more comfort on your own bike

@@gcntech I haven't bought a 2nd hand trainer but haven't heard about any going wrong, some are very cheap after the lockdown buyers don't want them anymore, 2nd hand bikes could have big maintenance expenses if you don't know what to look for. Does a 2nd bike take up more room than a trainer that folds up ?
The german DM (drogerie markt) SunDance brand had a sport edition a few years back that was alcohol based and a spray on form factor like 4-5 years ago. Unfortunately now they only have a creme one.

For what is worth, I'm a heavy sweater that uses titanium oxide based sunscreen. At the end of a 90 minute ride, it looks like I may have sweated most of it off, but I have not gotten sunburned while using it.

I have sensitive skin and am a heavy sweater. Think brand sunscreens don't cause any rash and it stays on even during long rides. It is mineral based and comes in both a sqpray and lotion. I'm not a huge fan of the spray, though, it tends to clog in the nozzle. :oldmanyell:
isnt the drop out spacing larger in thru axle, so the thru axle hubs wont even fit in a qr frame set.
@romanluu Blessing in disguise: Since lots of serious riders are shopping for thru-axel wheels these days, you can find some pro-level QR wheels from a few years ago for a great deal! Just make sure they are compatible with your brakes (disc or rim).

I’ve used Riemann P20 sunscreen for several years. I was attracted by its sweat-proof one-application-lasts-all-day feature, and so far it seems to have offered good sun protection. It’s a pump spray, clear liquid. Is this an example of the alcohol based type that Ollie favours? Anyway, checking their website now, I see that some (but not all) of their products have a new ecologically improved formulation that does not contain octocrylene. I’ll need a new bottle this spring and will definitely make sure to try this type.
A second trainer is probably cheaper than a new bike that has to be bought and then adjusted for not only seat height but stem and bar reach and depth.
Or buy a Zwift or Kickr Core with hub 1 and sell your old trainer.

My wife and I share a Stages SB20, and a second seatpost saddle for out inside bike option. It was the best option for us as I am 8" taller than she is so bike size is too much, and he bike is Shimano and I am SRAM... too much moving around for me.

@gcntech I bought a second post, so all I have to do is pull her post out and replace it with the one that has my saddle on it. Take a couple of seconds. Then just adjust the reach to my setup. I use a little painters tape to mark it. Pink for her, blue for me. Then I swap the pedals as she is not a fan of clipless, but all the adjustments take less than 30 seconds. Could not work out better for us
#askgcntech Hi Armando and Ollie. I'm considering going for wider tyres, currently rolling on 28mms, but I'm concerned about the aero penalty of doing so, wheels being optimised for up to 28mm tyres. So, what I've started considering is going wider at the back (to say 32mm) while keeping 28mm up front. While this seemed like a great compromise, i'm now concerned that the larger tyre at the back would also bring up the entire back end, messing up angles and my position overall. Is this a real risk or am I being paranoid?

If I have aero wheels and I’m looking to get wider tires for better rolling resistance and comfort, should I look for something just narrower than my wheel’s external width so not to affect aerodynamics? Or the less rolling resistance of an even wider tire gives more advantage even if it affects the aerodynamics of the wheel?

Talking sunscreen while riding, I have actually stopped using sunscreen on my arms and legs and have moved over to using UPF 50+ sleeves (arm warmer type) My legs don't usually get burnt but I do still use sunscreen on my nose, ears and back of the neck.

Maybe a long sleeve wicking type shirt (hat, neck shield, etc) that's not heavy, hot, or bulky is a better solution for sun than chemicals. What physiological effects do these chemicals have on the body, and its ability to tan (a natural response to UVA/UVB), it's ability to correctly monitor internal heat, and the lack of immune response to harmful chemicals on the skin? It's one thing to be exerting energy that causes someone to sweat, but as motorcyclists have figured out in the non-exertion world, covering up the body to sun and heat exposure works better than leaving it all out in the sun and wind. A controlled micro-climate is more functional than having hot air and sun baking your hide.

Should have mentioned that most thru-axle wheels are also disc brake. Converting a thru-axle to QR will not make it rim brake friendly or ready.

It's not just suncream which is a major environmental health hazard, it's also PFAS chemicals in waterproof clothing. It's a huge issue and one which is being well suppressed by the industry. Have a quick google about it. There's a scandal in Jersey because it's used in Fire Fighting materials and ends up in the water supply causing all kinds of issues.

I don't know about the ease of getting the bike on and off the trainer.. I hate having to take my 2023 Trek Domane SL5 on and off the Kickr trainer (being specific in case someone else has this issue or can at least confirm this issue). I don't know what they did when designing that bike, but it is an absolute pain to get the thru-axle lined up. There doesn't seem to be much material for the dropouts to sit on the trainer's thru-axle adapters, so it is a faff of shifting the bike around until it finally starts threading (hopefully without cross-threading).
Glad you posted that comment. I hate taking my Domane off and on my wahoo kickr. Other bikes might be easier

@@kenny4540 Make sure the dropouts sit nicely on the KICKR. Due to the deep dropout recesses, disc brake Trek road bikes are theoretically not compatible with the KICKR, but not if you modify the KICKR's left end cap by removing some material on a lathe only if you never plan to use the 148 mm side of the end cap.
@@sbccbc7471 Thank you for the input. I did not know the bike was not compatible with the trainer ... it seems to work fine. The sun has come out here in the Seattle area. I have removed and replaced the bike on the trainer several times in the last few days. I am getting more efficient. It is not as big of a chose as it once was. One thing I did notice is that noise from "cross chaining" is higher on the trainer (non-existent on the bike)
What sort of carbon frame sending off for repair? Via airlines again? New bike steel or Ti. Carbon is for the rubbish bin.

RE: Sunscreen cooling. Dr. Bridgewood, because I'm a hippie from California, I've avoided the "chemical" sunscreens for ages, always opting for the mineral ones, you know, because minerals are "natural". Hippie mindset aside, the mineral sunscreens work because they reflect UV while the "chemical" sunscreens work by absorbing the UV. Now it might be negligible, but it seems that UV reflecting sunscreen would reduce the amount you are warmed by the sun compared to absorptive sunscreen. Thoughts?

I agree with having one bike on a trainer between two different people. If you had different bikes set up you may have to chain the cassettes every time. All I do at home is have a dedicated seat and post for myself and my wife.

I live in South Africa so plenty harsh sun, since I have changed my diet to carnivore 6 months ago I have not had the need to use sunscreen even through a very hot summer this year. I just don't burn anymore. My work has me outside much of the day through the midday period as well.

We also didn't survive long enough for sun damage or skin cancer to be much of a concern for most of our history. I'd say putting on sunscreen isn't much to ask in light of a life span more than double our distant ancestors.
The math was that during human evolution life expectancy was 33 years. Humans simply didn't live long enough for this to be a major issue. But you do you.
