- I built an Amazon D.I.Y rear bumper for a Jeep cherokee Xj .
In this video I needed a new rear bumper. So I went to the place every Jeep owner goes.........Amazon.
In all seriousness. I trashed my bumper in a accident a few weeks prior to my trip to Rausch Creek. I wanted something cheap and fast. So I picked up a knockoff JCR bumper. This video is an overview of my build of this bumper and some of the changes I needed to make to have it fit my needs.
I got this bumper here.

Great job Mark , as others have commented, serious amount of work .
Thank you!!
Fantastic video, I've been thinking about buying one of those bumpers. I really like the extended brackets you made
Thank you! I wouldn't trust only the stock 4 per side mounting points. The hitch area is probably one of the strongest sections of the unibody. I'd rather use that as an anchor.
That’s a sweet bumper kit. 👍👍
Thanks Larry !
Great video Mark. Awesome idea for the tie in brackets for added security!
Thank you ! The stock mounting was just not going to cut it. Especially since I'm about 1,500- 2000 lbs heavier than stock.
Fair play, that was a lot of work and it came out great. I'm looking to build a rear but have also considered buying a kit so it's good to see this in such detail.
Thanks. I wanted to showcase what is involved in one of these kits. It was definitely much more welding than I was thinking it was. I was still very shocked that the mounting brackets were so light duty.
The only people who complain about doing this cant weld anyway
Having done a DIY bumper (front) myself, I would agree its probably not what I would choose to do again. As mentioned there is a tremendous amount of welding required and making it look good as a finished product requires lots of additional time and effort (more welding and grinding). For someone that doesn't care about looks and wants to throw some welds on it, sure it can be quick and easy. If I had to do a rear bumper again, my 2x4 bumper was way easier and probably cost less too. Cheers!
I agree. The aesthetic welding is a PITA. I still like not having to pay full price, but it was a good "try it once" experience. When I elaborate on my cage in the rear, I will most likely change this bumper out for something with a little more beef. Like a structural steel tubing (similar to my 2x6 bumper)
Thats because people today dont want to put any effort ino things any more. Sad this is the state of MAN
That welding/plasma cutting table is slick. Where is it from?
Thanks. I got it from Eastwood. It is a 3 piece setup. The stand, the plasma table, and the welding table. I like it because of how flat it collapses. One thing I wasn't expecting is how heavy it is. But I would still do it again if I had to.
Y did not not show how all the pice where bent
Most the exact angles were covered on the JCR video on this bumper. That's about a 15 min video all on it's own.
just built one of those diy kits for my 95 though i installed the hitch receiver its really sloppy found that out after i had welded everything up
Sorry to hear about the hitch receiver. Maybe contact the Amazon/or the company you bought it from and see if they maybe can send you out some new 2"x2" ID tube?
@@FMJeeping other then the receiver being sloppy was a nice $115 kit way better then factory bumper that's for sure
@@87fubar that's good. Honestly, I couldn't argue with the price. Would have cost more to go to the steel yard and make the bumper from scratch
At 8:35 thats how I'm going to do my mounts. How are yours holding on to being pulled or pulling others?
I broke the bumper the other day. The mounts I made were fine, but the 3/16 brackets from the company who made the bumper broke. I plated it will 1/4 and it's rock solid . Pulls and holds up just fine
Dang that sucks you wrecked your XJ Mark.Sure glad nobody got hurt.Im sure you will have F.M. fixed up and back on the trail in no time.💪💪👍👍
Thanks Dan. I have some plans for an Indestructible rear window. I'm tired of swapping hatches.
Fm jeeping are you saying that hatch and glass had to be swapped again
@@kartracer3449 lol. If I were to do another rear windshield, that would be # 4.
Outstanding job, Mark! As far as "rigidity", you can always put some square stock behind it, since you're not using the hitch point anyway. This bumper is definitely more appealing to the eye than the other. Just wanna say, glad the initial "mishap" didn't accrue any serious injury. The last thing is, BRO, WHY YOU KEEP BACKING INTO SHIT???🤣🤣🤣🤣😉👊🏻🤘🏻
I was thinking about welding the receiver in just for some added beef. I just didn't get around to it. I do like the look more than my previous bumper. "Why do I back into stuff?" Well, it isn't intentional. This time I was trying to climb a slippery rock face. I got halfway up and the rig carried over to one side and when I slid down I came down into a tree. No way to really avoid it. lol, now it's a running joke.
What welder you used on dat bumper? How bout do you gots a video on that roof rack?
I use a Hobart Handler 190 welder. The rack is actually a roll cage. Here is the video for that.

@@FMJeeping thank you buddy.
The tie in brackets are sweet. Definitely on the to do list. Is it just me or did you bust your fresh glass?
Thanks, I can't take all the credit on these style brackets. I stole the idea from something I saw online (I think Dirtbound). Yes, that glass was maybe on my rig for about a week.
At 5:31... you did not "Make These..." that's PreFab. You're a Liar. This is BS...
Sir, I respect you calling me out if I am lying. I will offer up my rebuttal. th-cam.com/video/hs2xhBIgqNU/w-d-xo.html
They look similar to prefabbed. Which I definitely took the idea off the internet, but I did make mine.
