Doomed London Underground Train Carted Away For Scrapping

  • This filmed shows damaged London Underground C69 stock train units numbers 5532 & 5575 on train working No. T717 at Northwood station where they were taken away (by road) for scrap.
    Train working T717 was normally operated by A stock trains which were sent for scrap from Northwood.
    The reason for scrapping these four cars is that the the two units (which comprised 2 cars each) were involved in a side-swipe in Hammersmith Depot, and with the looming replacement of all C stock trains by the new S stock it was decided to scrap (rather than repair) the damaged trains.
    The film includes one car (6575) being taken away by flatbed lorry and ends with a few still images showing these trains through the years.
    This train represents a very rare working of a 4 car C stock train - although originally designed to be able to operate in 4, 6 or 6 car formations in the event they almost always operated in 6 car format.
    Also seen are some other trains passing by, including Chiltern Railways Classes 165 & 168, S stock trains and the A stock RAT (rail adhesion train) which is used to prevent falling autumnal leaves from creating a hazard in the steel rails.

    In London, they'll scrap a train for simply being too short.
    Meanwhile in Scotland and Wales, state-of-the-art horse drawn wagons are being deployed.

      Meanwhile on the Isle of Wight, they were running the modified 1938 stock until they simply couldn't run any more! By the time the 484s were announced to replace the 483s, only two of them were usable, with the rest in various states of disrepair and repair. Credit to the engineers at Ryde, they kept the '38s going until the very end. I'll be quite interested to see how the Epping Ongar Railway goes about getting the two 483s they purchased up and running again.

      In Singapore, the train will be scrapped after over two / three decades of service or when refurbishment of the train failed. Some will be preserved.

    1:42. A stock: Hello! Where are you going?
    C stock: I’m going to the scrapyard...
    A stock: Well, that’s terrible! I am so sorry I asked, I will miss you!
    2:13 S stock#1: haha! So you’re the one I’m replacing! It’s a shame to see you go, but we must make way for the modern Engines you know!
    2:32 Class 168: Hello! Why the sad look?
    C stock: I’m being scrapped...
    Class 168: who would want to scrap a useful engine like you? That’s a shame.
    2:47 Class 165: ohh, you’re the one being scrapped. Class 168 told me about you. I am very sorry that is happening.
    C stock: thank you...
    3:37 S stock#2: oh hello, I wish they were not scrapping you because of our arrival. It makes me feel terrible! Why can’t we all just work together?
    S stock#1: Don’t be silly! We can’t work with these old fashioned rust pots!
    S stock#2: Oh shut up you!
    6:21: Lorry: come on! I can’t be late to the scrapyard because of you!
    C stock: Easy for you to say! You’re not the one being cut up into pieces!

    Sad, but informative film. When they start withdrawing a class of stock it's usually damaged/defective ones that go first, quite often stripped of components. Sad to see this unit actually arriving under its own power though. The older views of the pre-refurbed C stock brought back memories too. As time proved, not even the example very expensively rebuilt after 7/7 was spared the scrapyard. They should've kept that one at least.

      Unfortunately, you can't save everything but thankfully, a C77 driving car has already been dispatched to London Underground's Acton Depot for preservation, while two others are known to exist elsewhere in the U.K. Also Zorrays J, the Isle of Wight's 'Island Line' only uses deep tube stock being as these trains have to negotiate the rather low Ryde Tunnel.

      LongStripeyScarf three cars have been preserved... I think they are all C77 versions, as the C69's had issues with asbestos. If someone had the space and the funds then they could have preserved a 4 car train, this being the minimum sized train that could we used - although they nearly always operated as 6 car trains they were actually built to be capable of 4,6 and 8 car formations.

      I'm not sure about the C stock but the A stock were scrapped without any being saved for a museum because they had asbestos inside their bodies and whilst it was safe 'at present' there was a concern that in the future someone would damage their bodywork - which would allow the asbestos to escape in to the air -- a real shame!

    Does the London Underground run on a separate line to the rest of the UK rail system? Does it use the same track gauge or a different gauge?

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some very good questions, the answer is complicated.
      First, the easy bit: yes all London Underground trains use the same track gauge as the 'mainline' railway system.
      re: interworking: right from the early days when the trains used steam locomotives there was interworking. The Metropolitan Railway was just one of the many privately owned railways here in the UK.
      Nowadays Bakerloo line and District line trains include sections where London Underground trains travel on tracks owned by Network Rail whilst part of the Metropolitan line is served by 'National Rail' (Chiltern Railways) diesel trains. In most cases these are jointly operated services so that passengers can catch any train, depending on their destination and which comes first!
      North of Queens Park - Harrow & Wealdstone
      Gunnersbury - Richmond
      East Putney - Wimbledon*
      Harrow On The Hill - Amersham
      *(Nowadays the South West Railway trains do not call at these stations, and since 1994 the route has been owned by London Underground, even though the signals are still owned and controlled by Network Rail)
      Plus there are places where London Underground trains travel on their own tracks alongside mainline trains.
      Parts of the Circle, District and Metropolitan lines travel on the same tracks but they use trains which look very similar (S Stock) and this is nothing special. Technically the S stock are subsurface trains - NOT tube trains. They are far too big to fit through the small 'tube train' tunnels.
      But in west London the Piccadilly line (which uses the small 'tube' trains) shares tracks with the District line (Ealing Common station) and the Metropolitan line (Rayners Lane - Uxbridge)
      Also, the Northern line north of East Finchley and most of the Central line east of Leyton were built as 'steam train' services with Underground trains taking over in the 1940s. But goods (freight) trains still ran until the 1960s.
      All of these jointly operated services have operated for over 100 years!
      This web page on my website has more information.

    How does the fast metropolitan line trains share the tracks with the Chiltern mainline?

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      technically the tracks are owned by London Underground and Chiltern's trains have running rights - this dates from the days when trains from Marylebone went to Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester, this was a jointly operated line.

    As far as I can recall, I do not have even one still image of either of the special livery C stock trains. That time consuming slavish activity called 'work' got in the way.
    However, I possibly do have the old moquette, I still have still image films to digitise of these trains, although as they are 110 negatives they are very grainy (dating from when I was a teenager... many many mooons ago).

    Got any pictutures or videos of the Yellow Pages or Back the Bid C stock trains also any images of the oringinal square moquette that they had until 2001-03 when the spatter moquette took over.On the whole I will miss these trains they have been in service for 43 years and they've always been good to travel on even thought they get very crowded. RIP C stock :(

    new S stock trains are still being built... the Circle Line is expected to be converted from C stock to S stock in September 2013.
    Then the District Line will start being converetd, but I am not sure if in 2013 or 2014.

    Very interesting. I thank you for sharing this. Here in New York, there would have been some slight differences in the procedure. Primarily, the cars would probably first have been taken to a maintenance facility where they would have been de-powered and stripped of anything useful or hazardous, like batteries, florescent tubes, and window glass. Then they would be towed to the scrap track by diesel locomotive...there are a few vids of this...

      The rolling stock was from the late 1960's.
      The disposal of the old trains was carried out by a specialist company. I suppose that it means that all costs were known in advance so should an issue arise then its for the company scraping the trains to worry about - not the transport operator.

    • @iandale3674
      @iandale3674 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +citytransportinfo Thanks. yeah, New York is also trying to dispose of 1960s equipment. But we had some stuff from the 70s that was in even worse shape. As a result, they had to keep about 280 cars from 1964-65- the R32s if you've heard of them. Anyway thanks for recording and sharing this video!

    From the station walk along Green Lane, down Hallowell Road and then into Highfield Road.

  • @CitytransportInfoplus
    @CitytransportInfoplus  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you want the nearest 'tube train' station then its probably Stanmore.
    However if you just mean 'London Underground' station then you can see Northwood in the video - both right at the start and when the low loader lorry drives past it.
    This station is on the Metropolitan line and in Zone 6, but since this uses subsurface trains and not tube trains so its NOT a 'tube' station..
    I filmed from the footbridge just beyond the southern end of the station & a road bridge a little further south.

    I left London in early 70's, these weren't old then (more likely I'm so outta touch!). These from front remind of the old RF s decker, even the first series of DMS buses (LT standardisation). Am sure saw these at Uxbridge at least 6 cars long, all in LT Red, or maybe was older stock ¿? Please correct me if I'm wrong....

    The London Underground and the UK's national railway share tracks at this location?
    Also this will probably be Singapore's C151 MRT trains in a few years' time; they have decided to replace the trains instead of refurbishing it, though I'm hoping they can save a few for preservation or at least consider refurbishing the better-performing ones. Not keeping my hopes up though.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not only do they share tracks here (albeit only the fast lines) but at one time the route was used by express trains from London (Marylebone) to Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester!

    In a month or so wholesale scrapping of the entire C stock fleet will begin, with S stock trains replacing them.
    This train was scrapped a little earlier after it was damaged in a way which needed expensive repairs before it could be used in passenger service again.
    Its probably best to read rik94523's comments to learn more.

    50 yrs old train..
    Which lane was that ? Piccadilly

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The C stock were Subsurface trains, they were approximately the same size as main line trains and operated on three lines, all of which were originally served by steam trains - Circle, Hammersmith & City and the District line service between Wimbledon and Edgware Road. The Piccadilly is a tube line which uses much smaller trains - at present the 1973 tube stock. These will be scrapped in a few years from now, when the next generation of tube trains are introduced (estimated mid 2020's, exact date remains to be seen!)

    2:32 is this the only parto f the underground that is shared with full size trains?
    3:46 do any of the London Underground trains have horns instead of air whistles?
    6:10 are any of these trains preserved?
    8:00 I would've liked to see that livery with the modern red ends!

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the District Line tge Richmond and Wimbledon branches are also shared, although on the latter the mainline trains do not normally call at intermediate stations.
      The Bakerloo Line north of Queens Park also shares with mainline trains.
      As far as I can recall all LT trains have air whistles.
      No working C stock trains have been retained - finding space and finance for even a 4 car set being the reason why. Two single cars are preserved.
      Although the livery you mentioned might not be there I think you'll like the "Fictitious Liveries" website.

      I follow a "railgen" yahoo group and also use the realtimetrains website, which is for mainline trains. Info on Underground trains is much harder to find, as its rarely publicised - because they dont want horders of trainspotters getting in the way when special non-passenger services are operated.

      Skip Haddad Not from Northwood. The line splits after Neasden. This is the Aylesbury branch via Amersham, the original Metropolitan Railway. The other branch becomes the old Great Central Railway for a while as it passes through West Ruislip, nowadays going to Banbury and Birmingham, though there is another short link through to Aylesbury on that branch from Prince's Risborough.
