    Russ Barlow has shown a similar thing using the Quest 3 and 3rd party software. I am aware that the color pass through is no where near the quality you are getting Steve. I had never given any thought to how immersive seeing your own hands can be. There is another piece of 3rd party software that tracks your hand and shows a small mixed reality image around your hands rather than the fixed pass through I shown in this video.

    • @VRFlightSimGuy

      @@VRFlightSimGuy Sorry, love your videos Steve and most of your opinions, but wow. Quest 3 is literally less than quarter of the price and the passthrough program for the Quest 3 is literally free . Its like my ESP guitar. I love my Gibsons, but my ESPs are half the price, feel good and sound great. Sorry...I know its a higher quality headset in some regards, but I dont think the upgrades are so massive to justify the 4 times the price. @@pilotguy27he has a problem with other companies that are not Pimax. It is very weird that in one video says that this headset is incredible but it's not he's daily driver (the Crystal is). I think he has a weird focus to review things and honestly lately I see lots of incoherent opinions in his channel. He was the only one saying that the Q3 was problematic and had 5 FIVE headsets with dead pixels..... Meanwhile I had a Crystal and decided to keep the Q3 with Virtual desktop and sold the Pimax beta product called Crystal. The visuals are 10% worst maybe but you can go wireless and have a solid passthrough or read the news using the browser while flying.

    For those interested with a quest 3/Pro and willing to experiment a bit, you create a custom cockpit texture with some bright unnatural color on parts in the plane you want passthough on and then use the Virtual Desktop passthough functionality. I did this for the floor, pedals and seatpadding in the DCS Viggen. It works quite well to get that feel for being "in the jet".

      I have a quest 3 with virtual desktop and open kneeboard. I make a PNG image with a pink shape that I want to pass thru and a transparent background, load it into open kneeboard as a file, adjust the positioning and set the same pink colour in virtual desktops pass thru settings. Also set a button to toggle the pass thru on and off. I use it in iRacing and dcs

    This seems absolutely great for 1st person pilot immersion! However, it's interesting because as a viewer (and therefore not personally sat in the cockpit as Steve is) I find watching the MR mask rather strange and odly less immersive than without it. I've tried the same thing with quest 3. My conclusion is that blocking large parts of the cocpit with pass through also takes something away from the immersion, and it is a trade off that is not worth it as a permanent solution. The quality of the passthrough or implementation, was not the problem for me at all, in fact i found it really impressive. Again, this is just my opinion.

    • @paulct91
      @paulct91 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Usually overlaying the passthrough wouldn't be this obvious, great software usually sorta green screens in only your hands and physical flight/driving/game controllers to lessen that obvious impact on immersion.

    If the scaling/proportions look better in VR1 than on the mirror I can totally understand how crazy immersive this would be. Another fantastic video Steve! Your videos just keep getting better and better. You've certainly peaked my interest in the Somnium VR1.
    However, there is one small concern I have where I could see this being a problem for my personal setup. That is, I enjoy racing in my cockpit with the lights off in the dark, even in VR. So my steering wheel and shifter is usually barely visible with the lights off and I rely mostly on muscle memory when reaching for my H-Pattern shifter. For those of us who enjoy playing our games in a dark room, can the Somnium VR1 provide a solution for this? Maybe a sort of night vision mode perhaps? Or will I need SOME lighting in my room for this work properly?

    Something similar can be done with Varjo Aero with its virtual desktop feature. In Varjo Aero settings set on "Wokrspace->Application background". Attach an USB Webcam to your Varjo Aero, open MSFS, open a video feed from your webcam with any capable software (e.g. VLC). Adjust sizes of the camera video feed and the size/position of the virtual desktop within working MSFS. It's not as nice as with Somnium (you can have a rectangular shape of the video passthrough only), but still worth playing with.

      @VRFlightSimGuy This is what I am waiting for! I saw on your tour of varjo video awhile back a dev there had a knee strap button & knob controller, anything come of that??
      My ideal solution would be to look at a virtual knob or button you want to control in the cockpit (same as currently you mouse over a control in MSFS it lights up blue), press a button on the physical controller to select, then use the physical button/knob to manipulate the virtual switch/button!

    I’m undecided about the MR, although if I could get my goflight modules working in the sim I would be excited! The VR1 looks fantastic but far too expensive for me, even the basic one sadly. Great to see how far flight sims have matured from playing them on a Spectrum :)

    It is interesting. Thanks as always Steve. However, the passthrough seems to cover part of the instruments and switches. That could rather be immersion breaking for many. And, it is more difficult to run through checklists without having to click away the passthrough all the time. The top would be MSFS to allow handtracking and you as VR pilot using VR gloves feeling the virtual knobs, switches and handles/yokes like you would in the real thing. But certainly, the VR1 may give a push in this direction for future headsets.

    • @VRFlightSimGuy
      @VRFlightSimGuy  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey there, thanks for your comments. Unfortunately the video depicts my controls as larger and slightly above the panel. However, that's why it's useful to have a short cut key on the headset to turn it off when you're not using it. Hand tracking would be great, but then you don't have tactile feedback of your actual controls. For cockpit builders, this is the holy grail. Cheers!

      @nilsschutte9380 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

    • @737sst
      @737sst 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@VRFlightSimGuy No holy grail yet, imho. As said on other YT channels, for cockpit builders pass through should be combined with a chromakey screen that takes care of the outside view. Mark (Simhanger) and Russ Barlow have shown similar setups. Problem is you always see a thin coloured line around your hardware. In your case not, but your hardware is too big and shakes while your MIP doesn't. So there is room for improvement.

    While I see and appreciate the technology, I feel it breaks immersion more than add to it. Seeing your yolk and hands but the rest cutoff in a window just looks wholly unnatural to me rather than just everything being rendered. Perhaps if the graphics of the sim were more realistic it would seem a bit more realistic to me. Just one mans opinion. Thanks for the video though.

Haptic will mean you feel all the switches, the clicks of the switches, force feeback, pressure, throttle, all of it. It's coming! Maybe, in the next years! Once Elon Musk has at it, won't even need gloves! JUst will plug into our brain. No headset, all direct to brain full life experience. Praying I live to see the day!
