This looks so promising. I was just about to order the Crystal light, decided to wait or look for other options after seeing this video. If the Crystal Light had color pass through and the resolution like you have in the video, I would buy it instantly. I contacted Pimax about it, it's black and white, and they wouldn't even answer what resolution it is. I asked if it were hardware related, and yes it is. It will never be possible to get this by updating the Crystal light.
That felt real! Damn! One thing I think the flight simulator s/w guys can do for mixed reality is to recognise fiducials on the physical cockpit. The fiducials can be a few QR code stickers (or whatever) that you place on your physical cockpit and then the software and do its warp and alignment as required. This is not a new idea and is used a lot in 3D camera calibration. Another idea would be to have the render engine do shadow or lighting contrast adjustments based on the VR views and project that on to your physical view (hence casting shadows or lighting in your cockpit). That would make it so much more immersive!
thank you for your video, Sir. This is THE FUTURE of VR flight simming. I hope that ASOBO (MSFS) and Austing Meyer from XPLANE sees this video and implement this on their sims as a native tool. Regards!!!
Russ. You are the blast. I’m following you so long. Every single video is a present to the community and so helpful for me working in an hospital having too little time to research like you. I love it and thank you so much. Please, will be VR passthrough also be possible with X-Plane 11? Still stick to XP11 because the TBM900 is not updated yet to XP12. Can XP11 handle the Quest 3, too? And, did you try to use two VR glasses to fly with a copilot? Do you think it may be possible to fly with two pilots in one VR cockpit? Thanks a million. Appreciate all your efforts. Cheers from Germany. Chris
This is amazing. Was looking at those pro grade mixed reality headsets not long ago and thought how cool this kind of setup would be. Didn’t take long to get into consumer friendly priced technology.
Another great video Russ. Nice work on the chroma key boxes, they are much better than the ones you had in the first video. I think you have done a great job at showing what is available today without having to pay out a fortune for a great experience like using the Varjo XR 3. Yes, I agree, and I think it won't be long before the implementation of this type of MR will become more affordable and easier to use and have a greater resolution. Keep up the great work and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Russ thanks so much for taking the time to do this. I'm off for the holidays so I'm about to tackle the setup. And yes the future looks bright for MR. Lol...so bright I have to wear shades! And you're old if you remember that song! 😎
Certainly looks immersive and fine for GA analogue planes. Glass cockpits will probably need to wait for Quest 4. Thanks for being such an innovator Russ. Your videos are always worth watching
Great work! As a techie guy myself, I know how difficult and frustrating it can be to piece together software and hardware from different vendors and get it all to work. Again, great job!
I’m one of those guys with a full size 737 sim. It would be great if we had software that did the pass through the other way round. So the real world image through the cameras of the Quest would be the default view and use chroma key to display the simulation (much like the weather person on TV). I’d paint my windows purple (or whatever chroma key color works best) and have the outside visuals displayed there.
The thing I like about your videos and what you are trying to acomplish is the fact that you are a real pilot and you have a good grasp of what real flying looks and feels like. It's not a "flying game" to you but a new way to get good quality flying experience and training. I call it "IRON SHARPENING IRON".. I still use my old MSFS 2002 Pro edition with my laptop..hooked up to a bigscreen and it works for me..I don't need all the prettyclouds and landscape that are shown in the MSFS 2020.. just the basic core elements.. ( six pack ..radio..atc..joystick or yoke and throttle with rudder pedals..big screen monotor..) Pure basic flying.. It's like driving a VW stick shift bug .and Imaging it's a Porche or Lambo... Or making your ladyfriend put on a Cheerleaders outfit of your favorit team and.... Well you know... (I better stop right there..) Great video!! Press on!! 🇺🇸
Nice video as usual Russ. By the way I was talking to Tom Barefoot the other day, and he told me that you had created your local Sim chapter of FSA. Way to go! Tom and I are trying to get ours rolling her in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Chesapeake VA area. We may need to chat with you about hurdles! thanks!!!
Have you tried this on MSFS? I did with the new version of VD. Works great. But, ASOBO,MS needs to fix the problem with popout panels. They stop updating as soon as you enter VR. Makes mixed reality for MSFS worthless.
This is so wonderfully close to my dream cockpit! I really hope someone starts making standalone camera modules that you can attach to any VR headset. I currently have a Stereolabs Zed Mini to use for this very purpose, but it would be nice if there would be a bespoke mixed reality camera module.
Russ, in my own attempt to get this working I created a few MR boxes and want to toggle the boxes on and off as needed to see my desktop. While using Reality Mixer my assigned button works well to hide/show the pass through. However, while running in VR it does seem to toggle off/on at all. Have you seen this issue in your own testing?
Russ, I noticed that even though in previous videos you showed that you are a fan of Reality XP's GTN 650/750 GPS's for use in X-Plane, that they are not in the Air Manager panel for this video. I assume this means that you have found the same thing I have - seems impossible to use then in VR outside of the VR space on the Air Manager panel screen. It seems only possible if you use two networked computers running X-PlANE - one non-VR with all the controls the Air Panel, and The RealityXP GTN, and another one in VR with the headset. This seems like too much effort to me. By any chance have you found an easier way to have the GTN in the Air Panel that is viewed by Reality Mixer while in VR?
Awesome work! I downloaded XWing based on your first video and set up the pass thru boxes similar to what you showed in this updated set-up. Mind you, I am using two touch screens mounted to Alpha and Bravo throttles and yokes with Knobster. I liked it, but I typically fly G1000 equipped bonanza and reading the screens through the passthru was difficult (as you mentioned). For now, I have put this effort on the back burner because XWing was not stable on my computer and the aircraft I want to practice on weren’t available. I have my fingers crossed that I can make this work on MSFS in the near future
Hey Russ :p Any tips to fix the wobble when using reality mixer and MSF2020 Doesn’t seem to be a problem with other sims like DCS and Warthunder Usually run locked at 90hz on my 3080
First of all great video. I have a question a little off topic but how do you manage 3 hour flights with the Quest 3? Does the battery last if plugged into your PC? My Quest 2 I have plugged into the PC and the max I can get is an hour and a half and it dies. Does the quest 3 die after an hour and a half even though it’s plugged in? I even checked when mine is plugged in and I have the lighting bolt through the battery indicating it’s charging yet it still dies after an hour and a half. Soooooooo how long can you fly with the quest 3 before it dies on you? I also do sim racing and my races are 3 hours long so I can’t use my quest 2. I have to just run on my triples which is fine but man you lose so much not being in VR. Ugh. I refuse to buy another VR that does after an hour and a half. To me that’s useless. In fact that would be a great video, how long does the quest 3 last while plugged into a PC? I would love to know. Thanks.
Mr. Barlow, I have recently just begun to look into achieving my dream of being a pilot and the flight simulator seems to be an essential part of training and continuing experience. To that point, you talk about a lot of technical things that are quite foreign to me, and probably others. What you are showing in this video is at least a part of what i would like to someday create. So, my question is, without searching all over the web for information, what would be your suggestion for someone that would like to begin the process of learning how to build a very nice flight simulator like yours. I have subscribed to your channel and will be watching all you videos, but I thought if there was a path that an experienced person like yourself could offer up, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thank you for making these videos and they are very well done and have a ton of info. my problem is, much of it is Greek to me. - Dan
You need to learn Greek😀. Seriously you might start with the Kindle book Flight Simulation for Beginners: A Guide to Get You Started a.co/d/554WBdw I know the author and write the forward for the book. It is a broad coverage of the subject to get you started. Like any subject it is a process and there is no quick fix. You may already have good knowledge of computers and that will help but if not you have to learn about that as well as about aviation. The flight simulator and a course of study like Sporty’s Pilot shop offers will pay dividends in reduced training costs when you get to actual flight training in an expensive airplane. www.sportys.com/eaa-virtual-flight-academy-simulator-software-package.html I’d probably start with X-Plane 12 since the flight model is more realistic and you don’t need perfect scenery to kern the basics. You can add Microsoft Flight Simulator later to enjoy lifelike scenery later in the cross country phase. Let me know if I can help further at barlow320 at the gmail domain which is s dot com
@@rbarlow Thank you Russ for the reply. I will take your advice here and start the process. I really enjoy your videos and have subscribed so I don't miss any new videos. Thanks again. - Dan
Definitely the future Russ. Need it for MSFS2020/2024 and DCS. Is there a way of drawing a custom shape rather than just a box ? And of course we need to get rid of the pink line around the bounding box.
Nice video!! Watching it I noticed that on 6:16 mark you press a button on the panel and it opens another instrument (fuel tank selector). I always wondered if that was possible on Air Manager but never managed to find something about it. Can you please give me some direction on how to do it, if it is not asking too much? :) Thanks in advance!
@@misturarica7519 there are a couple ways to accomplish that. One is to show or hide a complete instrument by using a panel script. I created that instrument for the C172 panel before panel scripts were available. Here’s how it works: The instrument is made up of the following items layered from back to front: 1-The instrument background image 2-A three position rotary switch with images for each of the fuel selector positions 3- a two position switch with images of a fuel pump outline and solid . The script for the instrument groups the background and the fuel selector switch (1,2 above)using the group() function in the Air Manager API ( described in the Sim Innovations wiki) . Then the fuel pump switch ( 3 above) uses the visible() function to toggle the visibility of the group to make the instrument appear to pop up by clicking the always visible switch you call a button in your question. Does that make sense?
Hi M. Barlow, I'm looking at your videos with the passthrough and I'm trying to figure out why my air manager G1000 in passthrough is not working because your's are working fine. Mine freeze in vr and the touch screen is not working, but if I come out of vr it's working fine.... If you have a idea let me know thank you.
I have held off on VR for this very reason. I have a DOF P3 platform with Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo controls and 2 15" touch screens running air manager and knobsters and I use a tablet for for Navigraph. I currently run triple 43" screens. VR is just not feasible using my current setup if I cannot see my controls, especially my touch screens. This looks like exactly the ticket I have been hoping for but I am not sold on the Quest 3 resolution and having to re-center everything when I take the headset off.
Do you have a description what yo had to do to get it running like this. I have built a Beech 58 cockpit for xp12 and would love to see it while flying.
Thanks Russ for another excellent video! Whishing you Happy Holidays and a great New Year. Can you please tell me if your running all your monitors on one computer?
I think there is a fairly simple solution to make this work smoother and without the Reality mixer software and just use virtual desktop. Depending on the simulator, one could possibly create an aircraft livery or mod that retextures the cockpit of the aircraft. Essentially, one could make the areas of the in game cockpit they want to pass through the chromakey color. This would negate any need to align the boxes, virtual cockpit, and real world together. You would probably only need to recenter the game window a couple times to get it to line up correctly. The assumptions made here come from my experience in flying, moding, and livery making in DCS: World. However, I would be surprised if the same principles could not be used in most flight simulators.
Great Video. Could it be possible to add a virtual monitor ( airmanager with G1000) on top of the physical monitor with a chroma keybox ? So we can read the G1000 and use the touchscreen ?
can you switch back and forth between the mixed reliantly you have and full VR? Even for racing sims this would be great as it would make button boxes easier to use.
Thanks for that great video Russ! I guess that also works with the non-steam version of XPlane12 (boxed DVD Version), right? Or does this make any difference?
Not sure if you can reply but.. my Quest 3 is not able to read screen clearly beyond 6-8 inches. I know the video capture looks much better than the passthrough. Can you clearly see the air manager panel with your setup??? The current talk is that half of the Quest 3s are coming through with blurry passthrough. What is your actual experience with focus? Thanks.
Yes I can see clearly but not quite as good as the video. Recorded this a couple days ago ago…unlisted video. Be sure you have bright lighting on the panel and turn down the monitor to a very low brightness or it will bloom and look terrible AltimeterMotives Panel Trial th-cam.com/video/jYCST4Z3oyw/w-d-xo.html
This is absolutely awesome...I have a motion cockpit would this work too? Anyway wondering what the vr companies are waiting for ? There's a big market for this in the flight/racing community. ❤
Another informative and naturally enjoyable video. What are your thoughts on the marriage of X-Plane and the new Apple Vision Pro? I'm looking forward to you reviewing the Apple Vision Pro.
I was holding out for the Varjo XR-4 with a similar price point. I think it has software that has been carefully designed for Mixed Reality Flight Simulation. While it would be wise for Apple to connect with Laminar Research which can run X-Plane on Apple computers I doubt they will take the opportunity to showcase their new headset in one of its best use cases.
Very interesting, thanks Russ. A question: the (pass-thru) video of the panel distorts when your hand (or the checklist) passes in front of it. Why is this - and do you also see this distortion in the headset?
Noticed it too. There is some sort of dept sensor /auto focus and maybe since there are objects of different distance ( eg. Checklist and panel) it warps the image trying to smooth the transition between the two not knowing they are separate objects? Just a guess. Not very noticeable in the headset for some reason.
Great setup. Although the Garmin G5 is difficult to read. I image if you used G1000 setup it would also be difficult to read. The future should better.
The resolution is an easy problem to resolve since it’s already available if you are willing to pay the money. For me, the excitement is the ability to interact in a natural way with a cockpit. I suppose a slightly wider field of view would be nice also. Thanks for your comments. It’s an exciting time for VR.
Russ would you recommend assembling a traditional simulator before jumping into VR? VR seems so tantalizing but I wonder if you should build up to it? I'm a PPL and fly regularly so I know a bit of what reality is like.
Absolutely. I would build a panel and possibly even a single monitor/big screen TV and get that working and become familiar before I try diving into the more detailed stuff. Definitely consider buying a computer that will be VR compatible so you don’t have to upgrade. Once you master the simulator in the basics of building a Cockpit Time panel (or buying one) then you can move on to VR.. The honeycomb, alpha and bravo, or a good choice for a first set of controls. They have a lot of the basics, which is you need to fly a training flight from start up to shut down. If you weren’t a private pilot I wanting to do some realistic training I might say just start with VR and enjoy the view. But it’s not great for training at this point MR will be a solution in the future but right now unless you know what you were doing it would drive me crazy trying to get it working together. Good luck.
Definitely want more resolution. I bought the Quest3 to be able to try this out. BTW I bought the larger storage version because I thought it would be more attractive on resale. I do like the idea of the stand-alone processor being able to off load some of the camera processing work from the PC.
I just started MSFT a couple weeks ago.. IT IS AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On my 4k monitor. BUT it is far more fun in VR with my quest 3... So immersive and real life.. Did you smack your left thumb ??
Thx Russ for another interesting video. XR gives mixed feelings. Your panel is rounded off at the edges, yet the line of the pass through is square, which makes it, together with the obstructive colour, hardly to overlook. Furthermore, as you said at the end, how about cockpit builders of larger airliners? These set ups are a lot more complicated. How many pass through panels are possible? All in all, an interesting development.
Initially the solution for the airliners could be as simple as placing physical green screens (I think pink works better) outside the windows of the simulator, and allow the video to be composited into the video image of a cockpit from the headset. In the end, there might be a way that instead of the green screen areas showing The pass-through video the pass-through video could allow the virtual world to be seen through similar areas. Think of a apartment with a large picture window. It seems to me it would be easier to use the passer video as the basis, and then composite through the opening of the window the outside world. Currently with reality mixer You would have to create a complete room, the only opening being where the window is, and that would allow pass-through video to surround the virtual world image, which would only be visible in the small window. Seems like it would be easy to switch the video feeds in the proposition and make it work either way by choice.
@@rbarlowThank you Russ. Indeed, there may be several roads leading to Rome. Let's wait and see what the devs come up with. Some pink panels in the room would give a nice touch.😊
If you have a problem of the headset unaligning once you take it off, have you tried just taping over the proximity sensor so as far as the headset knows you never take it off? It's a relatively common mod. Some headsets require a small amount of light to get to the proximity sensor though so you have to experiment with semi-transparent tape like painters tape.
I think the best solution Is to "highlight" the borders of the Cockpit. With a infrared color or with a normal one. Just a REAL PAINT to let the visor UNDERATASND where the borders are. No need to realigne every time nord to program and teach the SIM what will pass or not
So based on your guidance, I’ve been able to set this up for DCS world as I have a full fidelity A10 cockpit. After a little tweaking I got it to work and tied it to a button on my hotas to toggle it on/off. The problems I have is 1: like you said, the passthrough quality is still pretty low hence the need for a toggle, and 2: virtual desktop doesn’t seem to play well with DCS and so there’s a ton of lag and glitching to the point where it’s nearly unplayable. I’m hoping the new Varjo XR4 will be the solution to all this when they start releasing to consumers
Amazing...my Oculus 2 in on the shelf and the Oculus 3 is on order from Amazon...unfortunately it will arrive after Christmas!! I have two basic questions: 1. Is the Oculus 3 image coming from the feed from actual monitors or is the image being generated by XPlane? In other words, do I even need monitors at all to generate the outside the A/fC view? 2. Your 172 panel that you appear to be actually touching and interating with...is this another touch screen, a piece of hardware or is it generated by the the flight sim?? It's the answer to my prayers in any event. I am a 2000 hour Commercial pilot who just can't afford the cost of flying. I still want to learn more about the G1000. Rented a Diamond a couple of times for my annual pilgridide tooing to study Oshkosh...it was glorious but very expensive! I am going to study your two videos a bit more. I understand the Chromakey but am still unclear on all the hardware and software used to create your masterpiece. Looking forward to learning more! David Winston Salem, NC
The forward panel and the controls are a physical cockpit panel I built and has LCD touchscreens running Air Manager which I interact with. This is what the Quest 3 cameras are passing through to Reality Mixer. You need a screen to manage the basic computer tasks and to launch the programs but after starting the headset this can be mirrored in a big floating window in the headset. As for the sim it can open completely in VR on the headset so you need no additional monitors for scenery. It is generated by the sim and shown in VR in the headset. With no big TV monitors you sim can be in a very small space. Also since the headset has a 16 foot cable you could have two cockpits…fighter and airplane set up and use the headset and computer on either setup. Really flexible.
OMG...this is great news. I have 3 - 40 inch monitors that I will not need. The Oculus 3 arrives Wednesday maybe.I am shopping for the touch screens for the 6 pack/G1000. They seem to have a bunch of different specs. Will they all have a small enough grid to handle all the smaller buttons etc? You are a true gentleman and a scholar!!!
I am learning fast!! Great seeing you in person on IvanSky's post at the Air Manager booth. It's happening! Well it's all gonna happen very fast and it's going to be because of you and your innovations. Thanks for being out there helping the rest of us get going with some sophisticated SIM!! Based on your recommendation, my new Oculus 3 just got here and it's vastly better the by Oculus 2...light years beyond! Just what you said it would be. David Winston Salem, NC
Don't know if a panel with screens is worth the mixed vr hassle, cockpits can look quite good great in VR amd that way you can change aicrafts. But for every controll you touch and unrralisticly hypotheticall a panel with controlable instruments are something What's really something some5hing though is the pad, that's what I kiss most in VR, I can find my other conteols fine with my hands but usinf a touch device in VR... ouch. You used it with the quest, do think mixed vr for at least the tablet would work with an older PCvVR headset too? No idea about that and I don't have the merves and time right now for a. experiment or research that would be futile anyways.
At 13:41 you say “it only works with xplane and doesn’t work with openxr” I’m not totally sure what that means. Does it mean this setup can’t be made to work with MSFS?
I thought that was true at the time. I should have said it only works with MSFS running under SteamVR. Set the Virtual Desktop OpenXR settings on the Streamer app on your computer to SteamVR. The additional SteamVR overhead seems like a waste but with a strong computer it works fine.
@@rbarlowi have this working with msfs and SteamVR and a rtx 2080 super. It’s acceptable but I’m thinking of a GPU upgrade at this point. I will say, i had a tough time getting this all to work until i uninstalled Bitdefender anti virus. As always, you do a great job.
Iv been using this with warthunder and it’s sooo damn good! Wish the lines would disappear or fade out edges though, tried with DCS and MAF2020 but mad Vr jitter, I suspect because I’m playing via gamepass and DCS client with steam VR
Why would you bother with warthunder since it's more of an arcade? Also you can set up reality mixer so that it doesn't show the lines, or at least I can on mine. Though on mine I use the actual passthrough camera footage instead of chromakey (since I use an index). Can you not turn the lines off if you're using the chromakey approach?
@@jimmydesouza4375 haha I enjoy the dog fight in realism mode, just grinding to get to an f16 really, I’m still learning DCS but my problem with it jitter with reality mixer, guessing because it’s none steam version, same with MSF2020. Haha no, doesn’t seem to be an option in the quest/puck beta version of reality mixer, figure an update soon might happen or not lol
@@yokoh691 The steam version of reality mixer lets you hide the coloured barriers on the passthrough objects (or more specifically it allows you to set their thickness in centimeters down to 0).
Huh...interesting question. Meta definately needs some connection to the headset but once it is setup you probably could. X-Plane 12 once it is installed doesn't require internet except to verify the license occasionally, Air Manager is the same way. You should check with a Quest 3 expert but once things are set up I think you router could be disconnected from the internet. I would think a 5G phone as a hotspot would be good enough if you are using a link cable to connect the headset to the PC. Sorry, that's the best I can do.
I set the edges and brightness to 0 and they persist. Another similar chroma key program using Virtual Desktop has them too. Do you know another solution?
So far only rectangular prisms. I was thinking one could replace the areas in the sim with the chroma-key color to get the pass through video from Virtual desktop. RM developer is saying more different shapes in the future but to me OpenXR support is a bigger priority.
@@rbarlow Hi Russ, long time lurker for all your videos and posts on various forums. Two quick questions: 1) Have you tried to edit cockpit textures in MSFS with the passthrough color in order to negate the need for RM by simply using VD's passthrough feature? If so, how did it work and how did you do it? 2) Have you found any other way to avoid having to reset RM's passthrough boxes at every start up (other than the transparent tape mod someone else mentioned here)?
does xplane 12 need to be installed on the quest 3 headset for this mixed reality setup or can xplane 12 be run from a fast desktop with fast graphics card and then link the quest 3 into you desktop for showing the display if xplane 12 is running directly from the quest 3 sim card and cpu i dont think quest 3 has the processing power built in to run xplane 12 smoothly with latest payware mods FF visual xp installed etc
You can run the quest three as a standalone, or you can tether it via a link cable or via high-speed Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi six). The video Passthrough stays on the headset and is used to replace the color boxes that reality mixer generates. virtual desktop make that possible. When the quest is tethered, it can operate just like a VR headset and display video from the simulator running on the computer.
Ok.... I m flattened! I thought mixed reality was only and effect and not what you REALLY see. That s true reality. That s definitive. See the world. BUT see tour hands. I see very recently Austin Mayer wondering of how cinese "hardware air SIM" product are getting SO CHEAP and professional that we could easily build a TRUE SIM with 1/20 of the past budget. In that case virtuali reality could be the FINAL TOUCH and do the last magic. If hardware Will soldi virtual reality tech will be esser and It Will be a child game to setup.
I dont think that this is the future of VR siming. Why? Well, it is good for GA certainly, since it is just moderately expensive to build a "real" cockpit of small GA plane, but if you fly airliner or military planes, this is a pretty much a no go. While you can build a rather expensive cockpit of a airliner or military plane, like many youtubers done before VR, with those expenses you can build a cockpit for just one airplane only. In VR cockpit you can switch your planes easy, so I think the future is some virtual hands system that is based on glows or bare hands (not controllers).
I think I said future of flight sim for training….if you are just playing around the visual immersion is better in pure VR of course. With LCD panels and Air Manager you can represent more than a single aircraft in GA but your point about complex airliners is well taken. But those sims are already locked into a single type and the Mixed Reality will offer much better visuals that even the best curved screen projection system.
@@rbarlow Thanks as usual for your work. I would love to see a real flight in Asobo Longitude with the Panel set from Sling in Mixed reality. Ya know, entering flight plan on GTC controllers with knobster.etc. I have 2x21" Asus touchscreens with 3 wide 32" but VR would be interesting if the longitude works.
Anyone get this to work within MS2020? I have the quest3. When I use the steamvr as openxr runtime, the flightsim will not find the vr goggles. What is the correct settings to get this to work? th-cam.com/video/jTcC6B3PlXA/w-d-xo.html
Sent mine back after 10 hours trying to get it to work. Wireless/Air-Link is the problem. And crackling sound with pixelated images when you look left and right. Such an effort just to start-up. GARBAGE VR headset. Stay well clear of META QUEST III. I'll save up more dosh and just get a better VR, and it will be wired to the PC.
The integration is impressive ! The beginning of a new era for simulation
Regards!!!
I hope so too

Please, will be VR passthrough also be possible with X-Plane 11? Still stick to XP11 because the TBM900 is not updated yet to XP12.
Can XP11 handle the Quest 3, too?
And, did you try to use two VR glasses to fly with a copilot? Do you think it may be possible to fly with two pilots in one VR cockpit?

Amazing I knew this was possible with the Varjo, but the fact this works with a quest 3 is very promising for the future.

Thanks Russ for showing us what the future of flight simulation looks like.
Russ thanks so much for taking the time to do this. I'm off for the holidays so I'm about to tackle the setup. And yes the future looks bright for MR. Lol...so bright I have to wear shades! And you're old if you remember that song! 😎
Happy to help if you get stuck. Email at domain gmail dot which is a com at username barlow320
Russ great job and next best thing to reality
Thanks for demonstrating the mixed reality VR setup. Always wondered how that worked. Very nicely done! :)
Great video! And loved the comment about X-Plane flight model realism (21:15).
Certainly looks immersive and fine for GA analogue planes. Glass cockpits will probably need to wait for Quest 4. Thanks for being such an innovator Russ. Your videos are always worth watching
The G5 looks quite readable
Great work! As a techie guy myself, I know how difficult and frustrating it can be to piece together software and hardware from different vendors and get it all to work. Again, great job!
Wow!!! This looks like a winner setup...
Go Fly!!!!
Oculus 3 brought me here. Keep the 3 content coming especially if you can get msfs
Excited to see how this develops, thanks for the vid!
Thank you Russ , our explained well all details in good and bad points. Thank you so much
What a cool demo. I was really hoping that tilt5 would be the ultimate mixed reality cockpit setup.
The thing I like about your videos and what you are trying to acomplish is the fact that you are a real pilot and you have a good grasp of what real flying looks and feels like. It's not a "flying game" to you but a new way to get good quality flying experience and training.
I call it
"IRON SHARPENING IRON"..
I still use my old MSFS 2002 Pro edition with my laptop..hooked up to a bigscreen and it works for me..I don't need all the prettyclouds and landscape that are shown in the MSFS 2020..
just the basic core elements..
( six pack ..radio..atc..joystick or yoke and throttle with rudder pedals..big screen monotor..)
Pure basic flying..
It's like driving a VW stick shift bug
.and Imaging it's a Porche or Lambo...
Or making your ladyfriend put on a
Cheerleaders outfit of your favorit team and....
Well you know...
(I better stop right there..)
Great video!!
Press on!!

So awesome, Russ! Thanks for the great video
We may need to chat with you about hurdles! thanks!!!
We had a first meeting before Thanksgiving and will meet again n January after the holidays.
When you start the engine make sure the mixture is full rich and prime with the throttle if it’s a cold start!
This is amazing. Thanks for sharing this!
My pleasure!
I've tested it with my Quest 2 with MSFS and i have the issue that i can not pop out the MFD or PFD while in VR. Is it only happen to me?
Awesome work! I downloaded XWing based on your first video and set up the pass thru boxes similar to what you showed in this updated set-up. Mind you, I am using two touch screens mounted to Alpha and Bravo throttles and yokes with Knobster.
I liked it, but I typically fly G1000 equipped bonanza and reading the screens through the passthru was difficult (as you mentioned).
For now, I have put this effort on the back burner because XWing was not stable on my computer and the aircraft I want to practice on weren’t available. I have my fingers crossed that I can make this work on MSFS in the near future
Great video Russ. Thank you.
Hey Russ :p
Any tips to fix the wobble when using reality mixer and MSF2020
Doesn’t seem to be a problem with other sims like DCS and Warthunder
Usually run locked at 90hz on my 3080
First of all great video.
Seriously you might start with the Kindle book
Flight Simulation for Beginners: A Guide to Get You Started a.co/d/554WBdw
I know the author and write the forward for the book. It is a broad coverage of the subject to get you started. Like any subject it is a process and there is no quick fix. You may already have good knowledge of computers and that will help but if not you have to learn about that as well as about aviation. The flight simulator and a course of study like Sporty’s Pilot shop offers will pay dividends in reduced training costs when you get to actual flight training in an expensive airplane.
www.sportys.com/eaa-virtual-flight-academy-simulator-software-package.html
I’d probably start with X-Plane 12 since the flight model is more realistic and you don’t need perfect scenery to kern the basics.
Nice work. Looks fantastic. Thanks for pushing the edge ;)
Amazing... just what I want to build.
Thanks in advance!
@@misturarica7519 there are a couple ways to accomplish that. One is to show or hide a complete instrument by using a panel script. I created that instrument for the C172 panel before panel scripts were available. Here’s how it works:
The instrument is made up of the following items layered from back to front:
1-The instrument background image
2-A three position rotary switch with images for each of the fuel selector positions
3- a two position switch with images of a fuel pump outline and solid .
"Mixture's... rich..." -- Pink Floyd
Thanks for the video. Very impressive, bit too much for me tho. Cheers.
Can you remove the Purple box when it's setup or it's needed for the passthou? I feel that's the only thing that's missing here.
this is a game changer
fantastic, thanks for sharing
did u manage to get hand tracking working with quest 3 for fs2020?
I have held off on VR for this very reason.
I have a DOF P3 platform with Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo controls and 2 15" touch screens running air manager and knobsters and I use a tablet for for Navigraph. I currently run triple 43" screens.
VR is just not feasible using my current setup if I cannot see my controls, especially my touch screens.
This looks like exactly the ticket I have been hoping for but I am not sold on the Quest 3 resolution and having to re-center everything when I take the headset off.
Yeah not perfect yet but worth a try if you have a quest 3
Looks like you could use the "Hawk XP" version of the 172. 🙂
Great video, thanks!
Fantastic video Russ, just a question: how do you make the pop up windows with the fuel switch and the cut off, very useful option
Thanks
Regards
@9:59 🙃 Wonderful video
Hi i am wondering if the setup will be save for next time or you will need to setup reality mixer every time you boot up the game?
Russ, how well does the Quest 3 adjust to old eyes? 76 years in my case.
Do you have a description what yo had to do to get it running like this. I have built a Beech 58 cockpit for xp12 and would love to see it while flying.
amazing!
Thanks Russ for another excellent video! Whishing you Happy Holidays and a great New Year. Can you please tell me if your running all your monitors on one computer?
Just to make sure - inside your instrument panel, these are computer monitors that display the instruments, right?
@@ArjenJongeling yes those are 15.6” touch monitors and the instruments are displayed with Air Manager from Sim Innovations
Which game is this MSFS or xplane? I tried doing a similar thing in MSFS but the popout panels freeze with VR activated.
can you switch back and forth between the mixed reliantly you have and full VR? Even for racing sims this would be great as it would make button boxes easier to use.
Thanks for that great video Russ! I guess that also works with the non-steam version of XPlane12 (boxed DVD Version), right? Or does this make any difference?
No you need reality mixer which requires steamVR. Hopefully Laminar can implement this as part of XP
Very cool!!!
Be sure you have bright lighting on the panel and turn down the monitor to a very low brightness or it will bloom and look terrible

Good luck.
When the crystal's passthrough faceplate comes out are you thinking of going back to that or are the visuals on the quest good enough?
Definitely want more resolution. I bought the Quest3 to be able to try this out. BTW I bought the larger storage version because I thought it would be more attractive on resale. I do like the idea of the stand-alone processor being able to off load some of the camera processing work from the PC.
I just started MSFT a couple weeks ago.. IT IS AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On my 4k monitor. BUT it is far more fun in VR with my quest 3... So immersive and real life.. Did you smack your left thumb ??
Would you rather use 3x 4k tv screens or a VR headset? Trying to decide which direction to go in.
If doing real instrument training the flatscreens are better but overall you can’t beat VR for realism and immersion
@@rbarlow you really are the best, thank you for replying. Please keep us posted on what you’re doing with your setup so we can salivate lol.
Awesome Sauce.
Great idea.
I think the best solution Is to "highlight" the borders of the Cockpit.
With a infrared color or with a normal one. Just a REAL PAINT to let the visor UNDERATASND where the borders are.
No need to realigne every time nord to program and teach the SIM what will pass or not
Hello I’m trying to set it up with FS2020 but I can’t get running fs2020 through steam vr ? Could you help me
so good
Still clunky but look at this

So based on your guidance, I’ve been able to set this up for DCS world as I have a full fidelity A10 cockpit. After a little tweaking I got it to work and tied it to a button on my hotas to toggle it on/off. The problems I have is 1: like you said, the passthrough quality is still pretty low hence the need for a toggle, and 2: virtual desktop doesn’t seem to play well with DCS and so there’s a ton of lag and glitching to the point where it’s nearly unplayable. I’m hoping the new Varjo XR4 will be the solution to all this when they start releasing to consumers
Hope so too. I’m on the waiting list for the XR-4 too
@@rbarlow on the waiting list for XR-4 as well.
Try to capture a flight on the headset and publish it on TH-cam… I’d love to see it.
Amazing...my Oculus 2 in on the shelf and the Oculus 3 is on order from Amazon...unfortunately it will arrive after Christmas!!
I have two basic questions:

Don't know if a panel with screens is worth the mixed vr hassle, cockpits can look quite good great in VR amd that way you can change aicrafts.
But for every controll you touch and unrralisticly hypotheticall a panel with controlable instruments are something
What's really something some5hing though is the pad, that's what I kiss most in VR, I can find my other conteols fine with my hands but usinf a touch device in VR... ouch.
You used it with the quest, do think mixed vr for at least the tablet would work with an older PCvVR headset too?
No idea about that and I don't have the merves and time right now for a. experiment or research that would be futile anyways.
Have u tried this quest 3 XR with dcs?
I Would also like to know if it works with dcs?
At 13:41 you say “it only works with xplane and doesn’t work with openxr”
I’m not totally sure what that means.
@@jimmydesouza4375 yeah I have my thickness at 0. Just thin lines now aha I forget they’re there when sim tbh aha
Russ I live on a boat with limited Internet can I do all this without an internet connection?
Huh...interesting question. Meta definately needs some connection to the headset but once it is setup you probably could. X-Plane 12 once it is installed doesn't require internet except to verify the license occasionally, Air Manager is the same way. You should check with a Quest 3 expert but once things are set up I think you router could be disconnected from the internet. I would think a 5G phone as a hotspot would be good enough if you are using a link cable to connect the headset to the PC. Sorry, that's the best I can do.
very cool
can you not get rid of the redline?
you know, you can disable the pink outlines right?
I set the edges and brightness to 0 and they persist. Another similar chroma key program using Virtual Desktop has them too. Do you know another solution?
In reality mixer is possible to create mask with round shapes or only squares?
Just add a motion platform under your physical sim and it will get difficult to tell the difference as the headsets upgrade.
does xplane 12 need to be installed on the quest 3 headset for this mixed reality setup or can xplane 12 be run from a fast desktop with fast graphics card and then link the quest 3 into you desktop for showing the display if xplane 12 is running directly from the quest 3 sim card and cpu i dont think quest 3 has the processing power built in to run xplane 12 smoothly with latest payware mods FF visual xp installed etc
Pretty sure flight sims are all PCVR (tethered to a desktop computer) at present time.
Imagine if only the physical controls could be mixed in and the displays/panels/indicators/gauges etc is driven by the game.
Is this X-Plane only?.
No it works with msfs too
Bruh.
