UPDATE 21.09.23: Hey everyone! If you're in this comment section, you're absolutely top shelf, and I adore you. Even though this first doco didn't really succeed financially, it was incredible artistically fulfilling, so I've shot some footage for what I think will become the second instalment in the series. I'll hopefully get it out in the coming months, but I'm not sure, it's hard to find the time to make it work, could be as late as next January/February, but we'll wait and see. Thank you to everyone who has watched this one, really means more than you know. Original Comment: Every time I upload a new video with WETA I feel the same. Watching this edit back just knocks me over, it doesn't feel real, totally surreal. To be able to spend time with incredible people I respect so much as artists and as human beings, who have been the ultimate inspiration since I was a wee lad, is so incredibly humbling. A huge thank you to Richard Taylor & Tania Rodger, Daniel Falconer, Luke Hawker, Darin Gordine, Chris Menges, Leonard Ellis, Louise and of course the almighty, incredible, super fantastic Jules who helped make this possible. You had made a little boy with wide eyes and big dreams very, very happy. Let me know guys, would you like to see this format continue?
Oh please, please turn this into a docuseries. I'm 60 now but fell in love with LOLR as a young teenager and can't get enough of the behind the scenes interviews and details of how this epic adventure was brought to the screen. The often unsung heroes who created this vision are fascinating and the stories they have to tell are as entertaining as the films themselves. Thank you for doing this, I really appreciate it.
I enjoyed every second of that! To me it's a no brainer, and I have no clue how this isn't the most popular content on the channel! I mean, if you love Lord Of The Rings then this is pure Gold!! I think the format is great, for my tastes at least. For future stuff maybe it would be cool to see you getting to take part in some of the processes and techniques? Weathering etc... Or if they let you in to where they stored all the remaining Bigatures... I dunno, I'd love to see it all!
Watching this video transports me back to 2001 watching the extended edition dvd extras. It’s fascinating to see that the passion in those videos are still alive in all the weta crew who were involved. I love the fact that you are an expert interviewing them. I would imagine that more often they are interviewed by people who are less invested in the world they have created and so I love the moment when you call out the 72 bigatures and Richard’s like ‘you know your stuff’
The amount of passion, creativity and sheer art that went into these films was, as you said, lightning in a bottle. I don't know if cinema will ever see something like that which Lord of the Rings captured. So awesome that you got to sit down and talk to these guys. They're the reason I pursued film/production design when I went to uni. As for why this worked for me: I am tired of shorts, and blips, and one minute blurbs. I miss long format, and when it's about my favorite films, why wouldn't I take the time to sit down and hear and watch the passionate folks behind it's creation? But I get it. This is the world we live in, for better or worse.
Exact same here mate, and I think it's a total certainty it will never happen again. The financial landscape literally cannot facilitate it. Many of the companies with the money to spend are public entities with fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders. So they legally cant do something mental like Bob Shaye throwing the entire fate of New Line Cinema on one project.
Your joy during the interviews really shone through. Also, your depth of knowledge on their design and construction allowed them to dig deeper into what they did and how much they love Lord of The Rings too.
I really like these videos because it reminds me of the behind the scenes part of the dvds and you get to see all the cool art and concepts that don’t get shown in the movies or see the small details and history behind the props. All the best with the move my man.
I think everything just came together perfectly for these films, every actor/actress was perfect for their parts, the sheer epicness of the filming, good vs evil, depth of character storylines combined with stunning battles, and possibly the greatest most spine tingling moment in cinema history, the charge of the Rohirrim across the Pelennor. What's not to love about these films :)
I'm only 20mins in, but I have the same excitement watching this as I did watching the extended DVD extras all those years ago... Thank you for this amazing treat!!
This little documentary video is one of the coolest videos I've seen on TH-cam. I've watched the behind the scenes stuff from the extended editions numerous times and watching this was so much fun.
Really fascinating stuff. When Richard said "the thing we struggled with the most on The Hobbit was Peter's change in vision, we'd assumed it would be the same as Rings" I was like yeah, you're not the only ones. Truly bizarre difference in tone and direction between the two trilogies.
I really enjoyed the candid feel of these interviews. It didn't feel like a set of curated responses, to a list of approved questions, you and the interviewees were allowed to be excited about what you were talking about. Nice work!
This is honestly a beautiful, wonderful video. I wish it had been six hours long with how engaged and how much of a blast I had watching these people who were also my heroes as a kid.
That grounded aesthetics, the realism in the fantasy and the relatability to the devices and pieces in the movies is what makes these films so great. And the missing of these features is what makes Rings of Power look like Teletubbies for grown ups. Plastic everywhere.
The movies themselves were masterpieces but honestly, the BtS stuff is what really got me hooked, just seeing the level of work and detail that went into the films production and the bonding between cast and crew really made me appreciate these already great films in a whole new way. More films should take note and document their making like that.
The amount of detail that went into the design process from creatures, culture, weapons and sets was amazing. The acting was also top notch. The story writing itself was good. New Zealand as a whole was an excellent backdrop. The extended version could have added more elements from the book like the Barrow Wights. Some scenes would have been better suited in places like Australia, Canada and the US. For example the Rohirrim Charge was mostly digitalized as they only had 150 or so extras with horses. Re-enactment societies (especially in the US) would have given Jackson 1000s of actual horsemen to use and the Great Plains with the Rockies as a back drop (for the White Mountains) would have been stunning. Wished they had made a full scale model of the Corsair ship that could actually float.
100% more of these please - maybe like semi regularly. With all due respect to the hard work on your excellent 'normal' content - I found this super engaging, and actively watched it all the way through (not just half in the background).
Please keep this format coming! I've thoroughly enjoyed watching this as not only a fan of the miniature game, not only a fan of the Peter Jackson trilogy, but also as a filmmaker myself. I've visited Weta workshop twice and have thoroughly enjoyed it both times. I was fortunate enough to get a tour of their editing facilities whilst I was out there working in Wellington as a video editor myself. I can't wait to return again, this time with my young family. In short, keep this coming!
This felt like I watched a new episode of the behind-the-scenes, almost like I was there myself. Thank you. This is why I love your channel so much -- it lets me experience Lord of the Rings like no one else can. As a model maker and jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none hobbyist, engaging with the works of Tolkien through hands-on experiences like this brings me incredible joy and peace. I appreciate your effort and fully support your endeavors. Ride on!
Thanks for this awesome format! It brought me back to my childhood when painting my first wargaming minis from MESBG watching the behind the scenes material from the DVD boxes in endless loop getting my hobby mojo flowing. It couldn't help myself digging out some unpainted Middle Earth minis and started working on them again watching your footage from Weta Workshop. That was brilliant - thanks a lot! Please continue this format as behind the scenes material are always a welcome variety to the usual content!!!
This video is a learning experience. I grew up making swords, bows. arrows and shields. I had plastic 54m soldiers. Made buildings and forts. I played contact sports. Worked outside in all kinds of weather. These guys at WETA are living the dream. Thanks for sharing ZZ.
The world needs more videos like this. I honestly feel like we are in a creative crisis in terms of popular movie and film making. Lotr is such a big production and yet feels like an indi movie in a way. The passion, love and creative genius that went into those films, of cause on the basis of these literary master pieces, is unmatched. I really miss movies like lotr. I miss people taking their time to create something that lasts, something that is meaningful. Of cause there are still things like it out there, but they tend to not shine a bright through all the fast pace content and consumption. I was really happy to see this video and remembering myself of the greatness that lotr is and will always be. And the same goes for the warhammer content you do. Its so true to the heart and I really appreciate that. I am so excited for everything to come on this channel!
What makes The Lord of the Rings the literary masterpiece it is, is the depth of its world building, that make the story and characters live and breath through the pages. A reader feels the sheer weight of the architecture holding the narration, and throught it the immense cultural and intellectual baggage of Tolkien. Through its author, the book draws from centuries of western history, philosophy, literature and art. And the trilogy by Peter Jackson, through the effort and time of so many talented and passionate people, succeeded in conveying the same artistic and intellectual treasure. I dubt something will ever get close to it for a long time, if ever, not last because the West in general actually came to despise every expression of the very history, culture and world view that generated this timeless story. In a sense, I think the P.J. trilogy even came to be the swan song of a whole collective identity. (I am not writing this to polemize or trigger a cultural war, far from that: everything changes, nothing is eternal, and this is true for civilizations and cultural identities as well. It is often sad and traumatic for individuals and societis living these periods of passage, but it's inevitable.)
Over 20 years later, and they are STILL just as passionate and dedicated about their work and craft as they were back then. That level of talent and enthusiasm is inspiring. Thank you Weta and everyone involved for revolutionizing cinema as a whole and inspiring many generations for years to come.
This doc reminded me of the classic deep-dive making of's that we don't get to enjoy anymore. And getting to listen to the Weta masters themselves talk about their art and craftsmanship is pure gold. The LOTR Trilogy was incredibly influential in my formative years and anything that makes me live for a while in Middle Earth is always a gift! keep it up!
I enjoyed this video a lot. I honestly watched the behind the scenes discs of the extended editions as much as i did the movies when i was growing up. Weta workshop was my dream job. I never thought i could ever do anything as amazing as they did. Their passion shown through in every aspect of the trilogy! Thanks for showing us more of them and their incredible love for middle earth and crafting in general!
I basically never comment on TH-cam videos but this vid begged for it. Incredible work Lachy! This was a joy to watch while working on a big commission paint job and I am sure I'll return to watch more intently. Would love to see more in this vein and I'm so excited to see what you do now that you're living in Middle Earth! Much love from Canada!!!
mate I absolutely love your content. the hobby already had me in but the level of passion and detail that you put into your board is just incredible. but this is my favourite video that you have done by far. there are already 472 other comments here but I can't help but add mine, whether you read it or not. you have really nailed the reason that these films are so amazing and why they will really stand the test of time. the passion from the people who made them and the effort that they put into the production of the film showed through when I first watched the behind the scenes on lord of the rings and continues to show how impactful it was to their lives 20 years on. nothing can top that level of commitment to making a master piece, that will never be rivalled in my eyes. now for the second reason that the films were so amazing is the breathtaking scenery of New Zealand. I have visited that beautiful country and cannot wait to go back. truely envious that you have moved there. please tell me that you will continue these documentary style videos and tell me the next ones some of the stunning locations from the films. people involved in this hobby should love this content that you releasing as it is the history behind why the films are just so amazing and create the basis for our beloved game. keep it up and see you in the live stream soon.
Thank you so much Wadey, your comment means a great deal mate :) the locations are DEFINITELY one of the candidates for the next episodes if I can find a way to make these work :)
Along with the guys at ILM during the Star Wars (New Hope) era, the team at WETA set a new standard in film, for professionals and audiences. The truly inspiring thing with both, is that they had no idea how big it would become, but had the belief and passion to do their very best. Thanks for bringing this to us.
As an artist, I love to see the behind the scenes work that you have been able to experience, especially the drawings and sketches! One day I'd love to see some of those in person
I love the video. Recently I have been reading the Hobbit Chronicles books and I was amazed by the work of Weta. Seeing the people that made this fantastic movies and wrote the books of Chronicles in a TH-cam video is incredible. I hope that you continue making this quality documentaries even if they are not as popular as the other videos, because I believe that this content make the middle earth more close to us
This video better do well! We all love your channel because you are THE lotr miniature channel. This video is all about lotr, from the source. This was really interesting and engaging. You structured the various scenes and clips together in a very well, coherent manner so well done. Always a treasure to see more 'behind the scenes' type stuff, as another kid who grew up watching the multi-disk long 'making of' for lotr.
This was absolutely amazing. I watched all this behind the scenes footage as a kid as well and have been in love with what Weta created ever since. Thank you for making this long form content even if it’s not the best format for modern day TH-cam.
The fact you got to talk and see so much of what was a major part of my childhood makes me not only insanely jealous, but also inspired. Seeing just how much effort went into these movies time and time again never, never gets old, and I am always seeing something new in these. The way you presented was so charming and sincere about your massive love of the series. And I mean, we got to look at the amazing prop work for the LotR movies, which are just always, always so mindblowing.
I love this type of longer vids, the behind the scenes of one of the best movies ever made is just a bonus. I watched the bonus material so often, hearing new stories and learning more about it is always great.
This is the absolute best content I've seen in a good while. I'm in the games industry and love seeing how similar the process is, and I love seeing so much behind the scenes stuff.
I subscribed to your channel because of this video. I LOVE the behind the scenes features on the extended editions and watched every minute of them all several times. So, yes, please do this again!
I continue to live vicariously through Lachie! I also spent just as long watching the behind the scenes footage and books as watching the actual moviies! I did the tours of WETA & Hobbiton when on honeymoon, I wish I could just go back and spend days there.
Wonderful vid! It's great to see a deep-dive into a world you clearly love. I had the good fortune to chat with Richard Taylor in 2009 about a script I wrote and would have directed if it was green-lit. Ultimately it wasn't financed but my conversation with Richard is still a wonderful memory. :)
Ah that's incredible Troy, that would be a cherished memory. Finance is always a nightmare, big hugs. I went through a similar experience about ten years ago, and were working with WETA to look at involvement, who knows maybe it will come out of the draw one day haha
@@Zorpazorp I eventually directed a feature I didn't write, DON'T BEA FRAID OF THE DARK, but there's something pretty special about writing and directing a movie. Maybe both our projects will come out of the drawer one day. :)
Awesome video!! This was so cool. I remember watching the DVD special features and being amazed at how hard everyone was working and how skilled they are. About the video, please make more content like this! I have 2 monitors, if it's a long video, I'll watch it while playing a game - I hope you get a lot of views so that you keep making stuff like this. Thanks!
Love seeing content like this, having already burned through all the behind the scenes and making of videos that already exist, its always great to see more! And your enthusiasm for the setting and the production is infectious!
Great video ! I was 18 when the Fellowship got released and I vividly remember the goosebumps I had while Galadriel narrated the prologue. Once I got the long version in DVD, I know that, for a while, any other movie felt uninteresting to me. Now I must admit I haven’t watched them in quite some time. I need to change that asap
Great video! I really hope there is more! And I really hope that, now that you are living there, you go on location and do some nice exploring of the places that we saw in the films. I like your regular content, but these Middle Earth ones are a must watch for me, and most likely, for many other lotr fans.
What an interesting video. Loved it mate. I was 15mins into my planned hour on the cross trainer so had to add an additional 15mins on top to finish watching! Would love to visit Weta.
this is like an updated extension to te behind the scenes bits on the extended cuts. will now be included in the yearly marathon. do more stuff like this please. very enjoyable viewing
Thanks for this, Lachie, and thanks in particular for the message at the end. Giving creatives room and time to do their work is something we really should see more, and something you probably know everything about with online content production which from what I understand is ludicrously stressful.
This is the best video ever! I don't care what the algorithm says! As a Kid I memorized ALL the special features of the Extended DVD movies (while I was painting my first rendition of my all mounted Rohan lists). any attempt to rekindle my childhood and current passion is simply delightful! Thank you!!!!
One of the things I was always so interested in with the Lord of the rings films wasn’t just how special it was but how incredible all the sets, costumes, weapons and makeup were! I always watched the behind the scenes part of the dvds all the time it inspired and was a huge part of my childhood and I don’t think any other films have done that! To see this really brought me back to those times it was incredible to see and go on the journey with you!
Great video Lachie! Really enjoyed the interviews. The 52 minutes flew by. The props, performances, sets, costumes, music, locations. There really isnt anything quite like the LOTR trilogy. Watched the whole way through as i'm interested in pursuing work in the film or art space, really enjoying all of the videos youre making in general but the locations videos and other more unique ideas in particular have been great!
My only suggestion based on what you said at the 49 min mark, is that you cut the full video to smaller segments. Potentially with the full thing available at the end to keep a proper documentary feel. I have time right now (while I am writing a paper), but usually a 1h (okay 52 min) video will be super hard for me to get through. So please keep the video format, keep doing it because it's the sort of stuff you are interested in, which really shows! But please PLEASE consider also making the full video into smaller segments. I am almost certain it would also be good for the overall impressions the video got, which means its shared to more people.
Thank you so much mate, I've actually got the part two of this coming in a few months so strap in :) In the meantime you'll probabaly enjoy this one: th-cam.com/video/MUTujr0gvR0/w-d-xo.html
I JUST got here, from your latest release (Today) and I am SO frustrated with the TH-cam Algorithm that didn't show me this before. There needs to be some sort of auto-play list of all your connective videos so that, after one finishes, I can see something that I haven't seen before, or something even related. I am so glad I finally found this!
I watch your videos to get ideas for my own large scale project(Resident Evil themed). Its helpful to see your process, and where you have come from to where you are now. I do enjoy lord of the rings of course though. I'm looking forward to seeing your setup/studio. I was hoping for as glimpse of it in this video, but I watched the whole thing because its fun to see you get to meet the people behind your passion. I'm secretly hoping for the same with my project in the future. I'm not sure how well the video will do now or more in the future in terms of views but that shouldn't stop you. A video is a good excuse to go visit these people as much as possible haha. Hope the move has gone well. Looking forward to more content.
I only recently found your channel after getting into 40k and this video was great as it brought back so many memories of the first time seeing Lord of the Rings its great seeing how they did the thing they did first hand, great video
Wow great video. Would love to see more. I’ve been a LOTR fan since reading the book and fell in love with the movies because they portrayed the epic-ness I pictured in my mind when I read the books. I remember watching every documentary/interview I could on TV, plus the added bonus of living in Aotearoa added to the experience.
Thanks for this deep dive at WETA! You asked a thoughtful question about what is so special about Peter's Lord of the Rings work, and these interviews revealed much of the answer. I'll treasure my WETA figures and my Hobbiton village from WETA even more! (And my going to New Zealand to see them in person was icing on the cake!)
Great Documentary - like the “Making Of” in the DVD sets that came out with the movies. I watched those time and time again in utter wonder of the abilities of the people at Weta. Thanks, a comparatively long YT video that seemed like only a few minutes - looking forward to more now you’re in Middle Earth. 👍
I love to see these types of videos. Like people have already said it relights the fire of what we love. If you enjoy making these types of videos keep them coming mate. I know many of us enjoy watching. Keep up the great work mate. Can't wait for the next video you put out
I think what makes this work well is, aside from the good cuts and the engaging content is that you yourself are obviously mad about the whole creation and are very excited to discuss all the details with the people responsible, it looks like you also did a lot of research which helps the interviews and discussions to flow really well. Great video
I enjoyed watching partly because I’ve been a huge LoTR fan all my life, partly because I love seeing the scale and detail of work that went into the films but also I just love watching a passionate artist or artists show their skill in their craft
I love documentaries, and i loved lord of the rings. It was my childhood. :) so watching this, and seeing how much effort you went to get these interviews and meet these people was valuable viewing for me. Thankyou :)
@@Zorpazorp np I mean it man :) If it was fun making it and your passionate about doing more long format I hope you do it once in a blue moon even if this video doesnt do to well. But I am crossing my fingers your beating the algorithm on this one. Also, I`m so jealous you got to see and touch and swing all those swords. They really are the swords of swords.
Really enjoyed this and would be very happy to see more of these every so often. Always felt there was more behind the scenes stuff for LOTR than made it onto the Videos/DVDs.
Lachie, I love this. I'm nearly 47, I read the books in late 80's. Got heavily into 40k in the early 90's, then lost interest. Fast forward to 2001 and was blown away by Peter Jackson's movies, got the extended Dvd's which I still cherish because of the artwork. Now heavily into GW MESBG got thousands of figures which I love painting. All inspired by Richard Taylor and WETA. Fantastic video, thanks
That's awesome Jamie, I'm thrilled you enjoye dit so much and I couldn't agree more. Honestly Richard and Tania's work is probabaly one of the three greatest influences I've had in my life.
I was always amazed by how much commitement went into making Middle Earth. You don't see so much attention to even tiniest details anywhere else. So when I discovered your channel and saw you make all these massive dioramas I was once again amazed. Every board has a story to tell and you are the the story teller and creator. Seeing this documentary was an awesome experience as it once again transported me to Middle Earth and the people behind it. Loved the vid Lachy!
Brilliant source material. Faithful and passionate adaptation of that material. Smart enough to make good changes to fit the medium, the subtle tweaks and cutting some material altogether is something I support if done intelligently. Phenomenal score. Spot on casting and acting. It's just a perfect mix.
You want to know why... in the mid to late 90s as an aspiring fantasy artist I went through the process of trying to emigrate from the UK to New Zealand with the hopes of being at Weta and working on the film I had so long wanted to see made (Yes Ralph Bakshi you were a part of that desire!). I let a life that lasted far less time than the duration of the trilogy dissuade me from going. Now over twenty years later your journey and a love of all things ttrpg with a growing TH-cam channel inspired by you, I want to see the fruits of somebody who followed their dream and achieved it as a reality!... Love you and all you do Lachlan and being in my 50s now doesn't stop me from still chasing that dream!
I sat down with a morning coffee thinking I'd watch for 15" and then get on with my day . . . and find myself still sitting here almost an hour later with my mouth agape. Fantastic documentary and you really helped them portray all their love and enthusiasm for what they do and for that special project. It shone through.
Fantastic watch and yes I'd do it again. I'd love to get more insight into the work process on the hobbit films. I know it had a troubled pre production with MGMs financial issues, but it sounds like Peter Jackson made deliberate choices as well to make it distinct from LoTR. I've always felt they feel less impressive because of what came before, but taken on their own merit its a fine trilogy - It would be really interesting to see what Weta did differently there.
A true documentary on the creation of the Lord of the Rings and the following work on the Middle Earth related productions. As a fan of the Peter Jackson Tolkien-related productions, this was a must-watch video. EXCELLENT QUALITY.
I loved this documentary so much. I grew up with the Lord of the Rings films. The inclusion of the clips from the Making-of that I've watched beyond death took me back to my childhood. This was a joy to watch❤.
Seriously amazing documentary! I loved the interviews and behind the scenes at Weta. Why did it work? Because Middle Earth is amazing and seeing how they made it come to life is fascinating. I'd love to see more about what work they're doing on the Rings of Power and how the aesthetic or the props differ to the original trilogy? I know most folks beef about the writing in the ROP, but the props, costumes, and music are all top notch. Would love to hear some behind the scenes stuff on it.
This is a great companion to/revisit of the original behind the scenes feature that came with the DVD release back in the day,. I never got into fantasy miniatures, Warhammer 40k all the way since the mid nineties but i did go see LOTR in the cinema and after the DVDs came out the Making Of were often playing as i was sitting and building or painting stuff. Beyond excellent work!
Great documentary video, I loved it from start to finish, the people who did the work on LOTR are fabulous, thank you for sharing and congratulations to you for this great video editing! Just awesome, from France!
The passion and effort that went into these films is unmatched. From every level and department, at this point I wouldn't be surprised to hear the catering team were making 3 course meals every day it feels like that much went into these films
Thank you for this video! I watched the first movie in 2001 as a small 11 year old boy and have read the books almost every year since ’98, and like you i have watched the behind the scenes material a thousand times! Finally after 17 years we get more behind the scenes interviews and material! Hope you can make many more with the cast and crew! (Wish list is to get an interview with one of the bearded Rohan ladies ;) )
It's the only doco event ive seen around the 20 year mark (22 years i think?) and to see how much the people who worked on LoTR still love the movies......it really has been an awesome video. have already posted this video to everyone i know who will like this. keep up the amazing work
LotR is a large part of my life. My job, many choices I did as a young man... and to this day still may be part of my future. These guys have so much talent. Thanks for the really cool interview. I'd love to hear about Peter and how it came to creating the Middle Earth miniatures range with the Perry Brothers.
Love this, keep this kind of content coming Lachie..maybe you will be able to do something like this with The War of the Rohirrim, once that comes out..🤘🏼
UPDATE 21.09.23:
Hey everyone!
Original Comment:
Every time I upload a new video with WETA I feel the same.
It’s so damn good because I was in fellowship of the ring as a 23 year old in the NZ Army as an Extra
here’s an idea how about Lord of the Rings World 🌎 Adventure Park ❤❤❤build it up against Mount Te Aroha
Please continue this format! Absolutely in love with these videos
Yes. Moar! :)
Yes, I would like to see more of this. I also enjoy your battle reports and terrain creation videos.
You are most welcome Lynne, I'm thrilled you enjoyed it so much :)
The set design, the world building, the characters, the music, the beliefs and the story. This trilogy is the definition of cinematic perfection.
I wouldn't expect anything less when it is a movie set in the literary perfection of The Lord of The Rings
I know right hahahaha, my future epitaph shall be "Richard Taylor said he's good"
The amount of passion, creativity and sheer art that went into these films was, as you said, lightning in a bottle.
Same this is a great comment
Your joy during the interviews really shone through. Also, your depth of knowledge on their design and construction allowed them to dig deeper into what they did and how much they love Lord of The Rings too.
Thanks so much Iain, it was pretty hard to keep myself together to be honest haha
Half the reason we love the MESBG is because we love these wonderful movies, stories and crafts! More behind the scenes the better! Great job man.
Couldn't agree more!
If you love Lord of the Rings how could you not watch this documentary. Absolutely brilliant content.
Ah thank you mate, bug hugs
This was one of your best works so far. I think you are ready to do more than just miniature wargame filming. You have a real gift.
Thank you mate :) this is what I was doing before YT days.
Exaaaactly!!!
I'm only 20mins in, but I have the same excitement watching this as I did watching the extended DVD extras all those years ago... Thank you for this amazing treat!!
Ah thank you so much :)
This little documentary video is one of the coolest videos I've seen on TH-cam. I've watched the behind the scenes stuff from the extended editions numerous times and watching this was so much fun.
Ah thank you so much!
Nice work!
Those 52 minutes just flew by. The amount of production that went into Lord of the Rings is truly mindblowing. Thanks for showing some of it to us.
Glad you enjoyed it mate :) Thank you for watching!!
This is honestly a beautiful, wonderful video. I wish it had been six hours long with how engaged and how much of a blast I had watching these people who were also my heroes as a kid.
Ah thank you Bill, I'm really stoked you connected with it so much.
I really hope I can make like two of these a year I absolutely LOVED making it haha.
Thank you so much, I feel much the same way. I really hate many aspects of the modern landscape of cinema.
The LOTR Trilogy was incredibly influential in my formative years and anything that makes me live for a while in Middle Earth is always a gift! keep it up!
You did so well to uncover the creative process of these iconic artists - and also their no8 wire attitude. A great watch
Thank you mate, and yes no8 wire indeed!!!! Resourceful is their middle name haha
Glad you enjoyed it mate! Thank you for watching!!
Oh thank you Paul it's been aages since I got a comment on this one, really love it.
mate I absolutely love your content. the hobby already had me in but the level of passion and detail that you put into your board is just incredible. but this is my favourite video that you have done by far. there are already 472 other comments here but I can't help but add mine, whether you read it or not.
you have really nailed the reason that these films are so amazing and why they will really stand the test of time. the passion from the people who made them and the effort that they put into the production of the film showed through when I first watched the behind the scenes on lord of the rings and continues to show how impactful it was to their lives 20 years on. nothing can top that level of commitment to making a master piece, that will never be rivalled in my eyes.
now for the second reason that the films were so amazing is the breathtaking scenery of New Zealand.
I hope that you continue making this quality documentaries even if they are not as popular as the other videos, because I believe that this content make the middle earth more close to us
Thank you mate :) :) I just shot part two which I'm hoping to have done soon!!!
Thank you Glorf, the structure was really crafted to try and be engaging so I'm glad folks are enjoying it!!!
Thank you mate!!
This is so cool, I love how excited and dedicated all of these craftsmiths are! WETA is awesome!
Thank you so much :) :) They really are!
I subscribed to your channel because of this video. I LOVE the behind the scenes features on the extended editions and watched every minute of them all several times. So, yes, please do this again!
Thank you Ann!! More Weta expeditions in planning already!
not only were the films good but the dvd extras were like a film school.
They were indeed!
Thanks for your work! I really enjoyed this documentary!
Oh Gildor! the greatest of all Noldorin exiles! Thank you mate, very humbled. Thrilled you liked the doco :) :) :)
@@Zorpazorp Ahaha, it's the first time in the last 20 years as used this nickname and someone noticed it, and of course, it was Zorpazorp ❤
@@troynixeycomix Oh dude I've seen that!!! Guy Pearce and written by GDT yeah? Very nicely done mate.
@@Zorpazorp That's the one! Thanks dude. :)
I can't believe Lachie has come so far, having a sit down interview with his modelling heroes.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy
Ah thanks Dslyde
Awesome video!! This was so cool. I remember watching the DVD special features and being amazed at how hard everyone was working and how skilled they are. About the video, please make more content like this! I have 2 monitors, if it's a long video, I'll watch it while playing a game - I hope you get a lot of views so that you keep making stuff like this. Thanks!
Thank you so much James, I'm glad you enjoyed the journey mate, and thanks for you well wishes on the views, fingers crossed aye!
I know what you mean, they are jsut a cut above haha.
Great video! I really hope there is more! And I really hope that, now that you are living there, you go on location and do some nice exploring of the places that we saw in the films. I like your regular content, but these Middle Earth ones are a must watch for me, and most likely, for many other lotr fans.
Thanks mate, don't you worry there'll be a LOT of location work coming up soon!
Pure nostalgia man! Your living the dream of why what we all got into mesbg!
Oh wow high praise haha, thank you Overlord!
You are most welcome Justin :)
Ah that's awesome Will! Glad I could take you down memory lane :) :) And thanks for the comment mate!!
You did such an amazing job with the interviews, this was a treat to watch.
Thrilled you enjoyed this Viper, probably my favourite video ever.
Awesome video!! Loved LOTR and watched all the behind the scenes footage on the extended editions. Would love to hear more!
Thank you James, hopefully I can exploring the many possible answers :)
epic, well done mate! I'd love to see more of these 🙂
Thank you so much mate! Did you see I just launched part two? I imagine that's what brought you here haha
I love to see these types of videos. Like people have already said it relights the fire of what we love.
If you enjoy making these types of videos
keep them coming mate. I know many of us enjoy watching.
Keep up the great work mate. Can't wait for the next video you put out
Thank you Philip!
Thankyou :)
It is sad these documentary sized videos are not doing better on youtube because this was fucking amazing.
Thank you mate :)
Wow! So much work in making this video 😱👏
Why am I watching? Simple: It’s like you’re extending the appendices of the films! Awesome content!
This was awesome. Like extra behind the scenes footage on the DVD :) cheers! Keep it up, man.
Thank you for the insight! Amazing what these guys did - thank a lot for this (all to short) tour and personL comments. Loved it! Please make more!
I sat down with a morning coffee thinking I'd watch for 15" and then get on with my day . . . and find myself still sitting here almost an hour later with my mouth agape. Fantastic documentary and you really helped them portray all their love and enthusiasm for what they do and for that special project. It shone through.
Thank you so much John, glad it captivated you mate :) :)
This is an incredible documentary both in content and how you put it together!
Ah thank you Harry, stoked you enjoyed it mate :) :)
Thank you mate, they've bee n massive for me over the years
This was great mate. Definitely keen on more videos of this format!
Hahahah I actually know one of the bearded Rohan ladies!!!!
It's the only doco event ive seen around the 20 year mark (22 years i think?) and to see how much the people who worked on LoTR still love the movies......it really has been an awesome video. have already posted this video to everyone i know who will like this. keep up the amazing work
Thank you very much for this. These movies are the best movies ever made. It means a lot that you took the time to share this
Love this content, be interested to see lock dive into the different techniques behind each one.
Yeah me too, I've already got so many dreams for future episodes haha
LotR is a large part of my life. My job, many choices I did as a young man... and to this day still may be part of my future. These guys have so much talent. Thanks for the really cool interview. I'd love to hear about Peter and how it came to creating the Middle Earth miniatures range with the Perry Brothers.
Love this, keep this kind of content coming Lachie..maybe you will be able to do something like this with The War of the Rohirrim, once that comes out..🤘🏼
