Fall off the log is one of the most basic vernacular jazz moves I know. It is a transition from stationary moves into traveling moves. It is a huge part of Trickeration, The Chase, and probably countless other jazz moves. In this video, we'll go over the basic fall off the log, some technique, and some variations on how to make it a little spicier!

Hi Laura. I started solo jazz lessons in September and I love your videos for revision at home. I looked to see if you had a video on the scarecrow but couldn’t find one. Is there one available that I haven’t found or one that is planned? Thanks

The dancers 8 count timingnalways throws me in explanations, when you say the fall off the log falls on even beats, it basically has the kick on the 8. Then the charlston has its kiks on the odds, 1, 3, and 7
Coming from music I only ever count to 4 😅 devinding the section to '1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and'

Yeah, the musician / dance lingo can be a hard translation.

This falling off a log is just slightly different to how Frankie Manning taught me. The third step on beat 4 should be stepping across. Good instruction, but confusing to someone who is trying to refresh a memory of something taught by an originator of Lindy Hop/Swing dance

That's a great detail! Thank you!
