Yep, & they're all playing at endoftheroad fest this year. I always go but I'm so happy to be seeing them there on the best festival stage. The Garden stage.
My family was forced to flee Ireland - County Clare - never to return- We all speak Gaelic and now I am in my 70’s and my Mom and Da are gone! In my dreams is the only way I can visit - Boyle -O Shanahan -Murphy 💧🇮🇪💧💚🤍🧡💚🤍🧡
I’ve listened to this maybe a few hundred times. It’s absolutely hauntingly beautiful. So simple but so lasting. It’s honestly just perfect. I love classic Irish folk but this is something different and raw and it’s amazing.
OMG I'm totally in love with their icy steel and fire, best band in the last 20 years, a sonic vision that brings tears to my eyes and a chill up the spine, & God i love the natural sounds of the seagulls and howling wind, thank you universe for allowing us to hear this wonderful soulful tapestry, Kudos
Currently living many miles from home and this song has become an obsession. So haunting and melancholic, every time I listen it nearly brings me to tears but it's also oddly soothing and comforting. Amazing stuff!
Well, I have to say that my entire morning has now been taken up listening to them, drinking them in like a strong, sweet porter. Wonderful. I am trying to persuade the mammy to come and see them in Brighton on December (23). I will be learning several of these no doubt and singing them for ever more. It's great when you find something that speaks to your soul.
From all over the world, we're listening, rapt, again and again. The comment section is a who's who of people I'd like to know. Lankum destroys and rebuilds me completely mind/body/soul with every listen. Thank you. Come to Wisconsin: I can promise 20 people and can drag another 30 by their hair if need be. If I had half the money my broke, functional Alcoholic, farmer butt had left in my bartenders care, I'd come see across the ocean.
Hi there from Birmingham England I lived in Ireland for 10 year's and loved it the people and the craic, I'm Irish/Italian on my dad's side from co/wexford lol Paul p England x 🙂🌹👍
I reckon I've listened to this song about 20 times in the last two days. Raidie's voice is this beautiful, haunting ethereal hum. Coupled with her accent, it's pure perfection. This is now a song I'll listen to until I die.
Such a beautiful voice. And this version is such a heartwrenching interpretation. After all, when you look at he lyrics on the paper they are quite lighthearted. But now it's like this longing for youth or something like that.
Oh Sally my dear, it’s you I’d be kissing Oh Sally my dear, it’s you I’d be kissing She smiled and replied, ‘You don’t know what you’re missing’ Oh Sally my dear, I wish I could wed you Oh Sally my dear, I wish I could bed you She smiled and replied, ‘Then you’d say I’d misled you’ If all you young men were hares on the mountain If all you young men were hares on the mountain How many young girls would take guns and go hunting If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes How many young girls would go beating the bushes If all you young men were fish in the water If all you young men were fish in the water How many young girls would undress and dive after If all you young men were rushes a-growing If all you young men were rushes a-growing How many young girls would take scythes and go mowing But the young men are given to frisking and fooling Oh the young men are given to frisking and fooling I’ll leave them alone and attend to my schooling
Shirley Collins and Davy Graham's version is an arrangement of a version collected by Cecil Sharp in Somerset, England in 1906. I included many versions (including authentic traditional ones) in my latest "Phonograph to Folk Revival" video: th-cam.com/video/rzH9HaST5JA/w-d-xo.html The series compares similar recordings of the same traditional songs by traditional singers and popular musicians. Feel free to subscribe to my channel if you're interested in traditional folk music!
Ah, Sandymount, and the South Wall. Used to love walking there when I lived in Dublin, watching the waders at low tide and trying not to get trapped when the tide came in...
This song Takes me back to the times that I never knew and to the ones who I once loved so true then leaves me alone their desperately trying to find my way threw back home to them before its over again when the song ends a flying vision of a life that was shamelessly taken and the names I was given Forsaken When I was Stolden all those years ago the song suddenly ends and then once again my old first short life is all but forgiven and Forgotten by me till the next time I play this song I secretly call adoption P$ (It's always that somber baritone guitar That finally breaks my heart)
I just came across this music and have listened to several of her songs now. I love with her voice, it's original and you can feel it on a level that's pretty rare. I find instrument choices perfectly matched and the skills of the artists playing them so they compliment her voice to be exceptional as well.
Wow, got to know Lankum two hours ago, and now I come across a song I've heard before (sung and played by Fern Maddie). All this is due to the blessing Bandcamp truly is.
Yes it definitely has a sort of bossa nova feel to it. I think it’s mainly in the guitar tune and rhythm but it’s certainly interesting to listen to :)
I do, too. But I think it's the call and response thing, rather than the melody, because the song has the second note of the minor scale in it so not quite pentatonic . There's a convergent evolution going on with call and response in music, I think because it's rooted deeply in humans as our languages mostly work that way, and we've likely observed how bird songs etc. work for centuries until it's become a sort of archetype.
lisa o'neil and lankum is like the dream gig
Yep, & they're all playing at endoftheroad fest this year. I always go but I'm so happy to be seeing them there on the best festival stage. The Garden stage.
I must have listened to it a thousand times since I found it afew months ago...!
That's about where I am at this point. It's still good.
Me too.. her voice is haunting and captivating

I’d trade my soul for a single of this. a single of the Radie Peat and Lisa O’Neill duet would be worth damnation for, too
The factory girl one! Love it
A & B side ;)
right with you, amazing cover. the background sounds are amazing, great video.

The Irish version of 'Hit the Road, Jack'.
It's an English folk song; perhaps that's what gives it a slightly different vibe if you're more familiar with Irish music.
Agree I come here often
same, wouldn't mind this up on Spotify

Except it's not actually Irish.
Who on sweet Earth are the 81 dip sticks that don't like this?....
This voice and guitar are timeless, heart stirring and moving.
Lol
Haven t heard that in years
"Dip stick"
Classic
A stranger brought me here and now I don't want to leave. Hauntingly beautiful. She has a special voice.
The sound with that guitar against the sea and traffic and her singing.. How perfect can it get xx
An Irish songstress is exactly the earthy component this song calls for, love hearing the seagulls
There's not many I'd put up there with Luke Kelly.. but this lady has got the soul of Dublin in her and so did that man!
Radie’s Voice is from the Otherworld ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s better than a radish...

they're even better live, highly recommend you go see them if you ever get the chance
Timeless. I can see her 100 years ago singing at a fair, eyes closed
Never heard her voice before, I'm blown away .........glad I found this,.....
Getting the Paul Mescal bump this morning!

Just to know that this song and these people exist fills me with joy.
I have never felt so proud to call myself Irish

I don't know how I ended up watching this but I'm glad. Probably the best that's happened to me today.

HELLO FROM ROYAL COUNTY MEATH IRELAND
I reckon I've listened to this song about 20 times in the last two days. Raidie's voice is this beautiful, haunting ethereal hum. Coupled with her accent, it's pure perfection. This is now a song I'll listen to until I die.
I’m completely obsessed with this cover
This is utterly sublime - yearning, wistful, deeply honest and true. Radie's voice makes me weak at the knees.
Such a beautiful voice. And this version is such a heartwrenching interpretation. After all, when you look at he lyrics on the paper they are quite lighthearted. But now it's like this longing for youth or something like that.
Very well said :) i feel the same sort of!
I totally agree
One comment said her voice sounds like she is 200 years old.
how doesnt this have 20 million views and a million likes

If all you young men were hares on the mountain
If all you young men were hares on the mountain
How many young girls would take guns and go hunting
If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes
If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes

Happiness is this song on repeat for the rest of my life. ❤

Totally wonderful! Thank you
Only discovered this today keep coming back to hear it again ,timeless.
It really is beautiful.
Am I the only one who can distinguish African/Blues tunes in this song? Or its just so because its pentatonix?
Adorable
Yes it definitely has a sort of bossa nova feel to it. I think it’s mainly in the guitar tune and rhythm but it’s certainly interesting to listen to :)
