Did tesla not say anything to you for when you modified your car? I thought they would cut your ability to charge fast if you install the retrofit yourself.
Just FYI if your vehicle is running version 2022.16.X or higher, you can access service mode without needing to visit a service center (previously service mode was geolocked to service centers). With service mode you can request a firmware reinstall. The vehicle will download the version you're on and prompt you to install, much like a normal software update. I would download before you install the new ECU, so you don't risk draining the 12v battery after you finish installation. This also means you can do this ECU upgrade without needing to wait for a new software update or visit a service center to enter service mode.
I recommend having all the doors (or at least driver door, passenger rear door, trunk, frunk) open and windows down before anything. I also recommend using the shutdown button in settings prior to disconnecting 12V or HV. Otherwise, excellent video. Should help a lot of people that may be intimidated by an otherwise fairly easy procedure to add a lot of functionality to a Tesla.
Good call! I didn't formally "shut down" the car, but didn't see any issues. I did make sure the doors were open as well but didn't note it in my video.

Hey - FalconFour here! Wow - can't believe I missed this video for the past few months. What an awesome breakdown, almost exactly perfect video representation of the forum thread. Of course, it's critical that people understand that the "Bundle"/harness/adapter *only* applies to Model 3s from 2017-Oct2020 (chrome trim). If you try putting the adapter/Bundle/harness on a Gen4 car (Y or black-trim Model 3), you'll have a bad time. The Bundle is an unofficial hack, tweaking and rearranging some sensor inputs so that your Gen3 charge port looks and (mostly) works, electrically, like a Gen4. The only caveat is that the temperature sensing is shifted upward a bit - the car thinks the port is hotter than it is, but it aligns with overheating values for safety (it will not allow the port to melt, and may throttle a bit earlier than it otherwise would, to keep temps low). The Bundle will not be Tesla's official solution, when it comes out - but it seems Tesla is unofficially satisfied with this hack - if you try to buy the now-released US CCS adapter, and you have done this retrofit, the Tesla shop "opens the gate" for you and lets you buy it (says your car is compatible, after it's been updated). The Gen4 ECU appears to be electrically compatible with the Gen3 port, but just a slight change of firmware is needed to make it work - so they will likely offer a Gen4 ECU with a different part number as a retrofit option. For those that want an even more Tesla-OEM approach, Google "Tesla K-ECU CCS" and look for the teslaownersonline thread -- that uses a Korean Gen3 ECU that's basically the same as the original Gen3 ECU, but supports CCS. In that, you only lose cable-button-remote support (can't open the flap using the charge cable button), but otherwise the button works fine, as do all other features. It may also be harder to find that ECU. Really glad to see such a well-made video documenting the upgrade! You can bet I'll be sharing this around. :)
2019 Tesla 3 upgraded without any issues. Worked perfectly! OK, the clips were tricky to get out of the covers in the trunk. Still no idea how to get them out easily. Thanks for the video. Ditto on having the doors, windows, frunk, and rear trunk open when you disconnect the battery under the seat. I made the mistake of closing the door and almost got locked out of my car. The first plastic trim piece that you remove that is located on the top of the trunk requires that you use a small flathead screwdriver to pop out the center pin on the two black round trim pieces on each end. Don't try to just pull the trim piece off as he does in the video. Additionally the driver's side carpet is held on by another black round trim piece that is under the trunk lip. (not shown in the video either)
Thanks for the video it’s very helpful, I believe you said the full process (ECU and wire harness) applies to cars manufactured before October 2021. Looking at the forums you added in the description the wire harness should be needed for cars manufactured before October 2020 with the Gen 3 ECU. Great video. one question; if your firmware is already updated prior to doing this, how do you request a firmware update that you can have available to install upon completion of the ecu ?
As of car software 2022.16.x and the opening of access to Tesla service docs, the procedure to get into Service Mode and request a "software reinstall" is now public. You can access Service Mode by pressing and holding the model name badge of your car on the Software tab, then enter "service" and hit OK. That will enable service mode, where you can then press "Software Reinstall" to start the reinstall (it doesn't download - it just reinstalls the last update). Read and understand all messages (e.g. that the reinstall happens immediately - do it after installing the ECU). Do this sparingly - don't do it to try to fix random faults. You can also use the "service alerts" panel in Service Mode to understand more about any errors you have - the descriptions of any alerts you see are very clear and explain what is wrong and how to fix it. But hopefully you won't need that in the context of this CCS upgrade -- may be useful later for other diagnostics, though!
the model 3 service manual does not specify that the 12v and HV battery need to be unplugged or the vehicle need to be completely off. since there is no HV flowing through the ECU?
The Q I've had about this is, based on reporting I've read, as of recently there are still some Supercharger stations that are still using the older Tesla proprietary CAN-based charging protocol and still haven't upgraded to CCS for NACS. Does this newer ECU support both the CAN-based and CSS protocols, so that you can still charge at these non-upgraded Supercharger stations?
Yes it is! Gives us salvage owners a ton of new options and allows people to start fixing these amazing vehicles instead of relegating them to parts cars or driving them hobbled (AC or CHAdeMO only). I am really looking forward to seeing how Tesla handles its plans to allow non-Tesla vehicles on its Superchargers. It doesn't control the software loads to those vehicles so it is sure to have rebuilt/salvage vehicles on its chargers at that point. Hoping they give up on banning perfectly good Teslas from using their network at that point.
I just completed the EU CCS Combo 2 Retrofit on my salvage 2018 Model S. Salvaged Tesla now charging at 150kW with Tesla’s North American CCS1 Adapter!
Got acfront_a552 condition detected with a vehicle controller after install / update. Thoughts? Assuming it’s in relation to the 12v battery but nothing appears to be working improperly
This is the second video I've seen where the EVGo charger is showing a slightly higher rate of charging than the Tesla screen indicates (203 vs. 191). One of them has to be wrong. At this juncture, assuming that the EVGo is reporting incorrectly, they're making a little more money off the charge than they ought to be, no? A little adds up to a lot if they're all doing this...
Don't know if I would go straight to charging the company with fraud. 🙂 Every other charging adapter I have (CHAdeMO & Lectron CCS1) show a loss from what the station shows it"s delivering to what the car is receiving. Im going with electrical loss due to the adapter.
do you have the plan to were you put the pin in the connector i receive it from a bunle of wire but no instruction to where which color goes where in the connector thanks

I've got the retrofit done from 1 of the mechanics but supercharge didn't work after the upgrade. I'm stuck now and i dont know how to the ccs supercharge make it work? I need help
I wish all chargers were this fast. So far the first roll out 2 years ago free charger stations across east coast say level 2 charging but the rate feels like 120 volts. Sucks big time.
The Tesla CCS to Tesla adapter is limited to about 200 kW. You won't get any higher even if you are at 5% SOC. It's just the limit of the adapter. I have one and tested it on my Model Y and a newer 3 with no problem.
The theoretical limit of the adapter is 150kW - it is rated for 500V and 300A. I believe that is a continuous rating though, which allows it to go above 150kW for limited amounts of time. That being said, 200kW does seem to be the "limit" in most people's experiences
It's actually a function of amps & volts - watts is a result of amps*volts (thus watts/1000 = kW). Stations are often limited to 500 amps -- however, Electrify America has been seen recently doing boosts to 600 amps (!). It would be so much better if the whole industry could stop talking about kW and talk about amps instead. The adapter itself really has no limit. Temperature is the only factor, and since both the Tesla port and the CCS port have temperature monitoring by their respective sides, the only limit is what the station and the car agree on. The adapter just facilitates.
Will this work on my 2018 model 3? It is unsupported for super charging because Tesla didn't like my rebuilt car ( which is now pristine ). It had minimal damage, but it was totaled anyway back in 2018 with only 2,300 miles on it!
Kacey Green. If you can get your hands on the EU Model X CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit you are half way there. After that, you are correct, getting the vehicle's software/Gateway Configuration changed to recognize the new hardware is a bit of a chore but not insurmountable. Let me know if you are interested and I can point you in the right direction to get that completed as well. I just uploaded a video about the process here on TH-cam. Happy to chat more if your interested
I would check. You can check on the touch screen beforehand and peel back the liner to see which ECU you have. The forum post I linked has more details!
Why did you power down the car? You are not working with any part of the car that carries high voltage, just pull the old one and plug in the new ECU and wire harness.
I'm working right around where the charging port is, so to be safe I shut everything down. I had to restart the car anyway after upgrading the ECU, so might as well turn it off while I'm working.
Hey. Do you know does this upgrade will allow to use ccs2 charging stations? I am using NA TESLA M3 2018 in Europe and here only ccs2 standard available.
You can actually use the European CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit to get CCS1 capability here in North America. I bought the kit for my 2018 Model S on EBay and did the hardware myself. Who the hell wants to use a CCS charging handle instead of a Tesla charging handle? NOT Tesla owners. The CCS adapter is ONLY insurance. Tesla’s charging infrastructure Is FAR superior to the CCS infrastructure and ALWAYS will be since Tesla currently outpaces EA, ChargePoint, and EVGo in installing new locations.
@@Juanguar by that logic, Tesla’s connector should be the standard. Way more Teslas on the road than CCS/1 cars. Maybe make a new standard that uses the simplicity and ease of use of the Tesla plug with the output potential of CCS/2. If they’re going to do anything, waiting only makes the situation worse.

I just posted a video about the process if any Model S and X owners are interested
How do I find out if my 2021 is a late model? I’m picking it up tomorrow so I can’t check the console.
Nice. May you can send wires photo ? Its would be cool
All details are linked in the description
My 2020 MY delivered in June 2020 came with CCS charging enabled.
Nice!
I have a 2013 Tesla model s 60, will this add support for this vehicle as well?
I would check on that forum post. There's a lot more details than I talked about in my video
Hi, Are you close to NY? Ill pay you to do the install on my model 3.
You can pay Tesla to do it now :)
@@Sibs i tried that and they told me they are only retrofitting model s and x at the moment.
What if there’s currently no software update available yet? Will the errors show up until the next software update?
It's likely. A software update generally flashes the whole OS, so it recognizes new hardware, like this ECU
Where did you get the harness? Thanks!
Everything is linked in the description
FYI, looks like 2MuchSun is no longer selling the ECU’s. “We just got word from Tesla that they don't want us to sell any more ECU's so this means you will need to purchase this from a Tesla Service Center.”
Good to know, thanks!
Hi, i have tesla model x 100D 7 seater Long Range.
I imported it from Japan to UK 🇬🇧
Ive asked Tesla for ccs retrofit upgrade but they dont want to do it as it's an imported vehicle.
I've got the retrofit done from 1 of the mechanics but supercharge didn't work after the upgrade.
I'm stuck now and i dont know how to the ccs supercharge make it work?
I need help
did you precondition your battery before going to ccs?
Yes I did. Navigated to a supercharger so it did it automatically
I am wondering if the retrofit is available that owners of 2021 will get upgrade for free since they should of been installed in the first place.
Maybe for some one was that. After ecu install all front suround system doesent work 😢
thanks my 20201 does not have ccs charging
Did this void your warranty since it wasn't done by Tesla?
My warranty is up soon anyway so not sure 🤷♂️
The link for the wiring?
All in description
I wish all chargers were this fast. So far the first roll out 2 years ago free charger stations across east coast say level 2 charging but the rate feels like 120 volts. Sucks big time.
I have a 2020 model 3 does it work?
Any recommends for 12v replacements?
Where can we get the wiring harness, gen 4, module and the adapter?
All linked in the description!
Can i add ccs support to a 2019 MX long range Raven?
@@FalconFour Are you saying the adapter can allow for charging at 500A or even 600A? Or does the Tesla car not allow for such high current?
So I bought my LR September 2020 and it reports CCS enabled, so your information is incorrect 😮
Sorry, meant to say October 2020 in the video. I'm impressed the Sep 2020 model has it!!
Will this work on my 2018 model 3? It is unsupported for super charging because Tesla didn't like my rebuilt car ( which is now pristine ). It had minimal damage, but it was totaled anyway back in 2018 with only 2,300 miles on it!
I'm still waiting for the full solution for pre-raven Model X, the people I've seen do the hardware haven't had luck with the software
Ah dang. I wish this was an option for you all
Kacey Green. I finished the mod/Config change on my Salvaged 2018 Model S and it has been a game changer for me on road trips!
@@bilbo75 yes this is something I'd like to look into.
@@KaceyGreen I sent you an email through your business email account that you have listed on your channel. You have some great videos on your channel!
I got notified on my phone that CCS will be arriving on my 2019 model 3 tesla.
i have a 2015 model s would this on mine???
No, only on Model 3/Y unfortunately!
eli white, you are in luck. The Model 3/Y mod will not work, but you can use the European CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit to get this capability now on your Model S (and X for those owners). I made a video about the process when I completed it on my 2018 Model S. I just uploaded it here on TH-cam if you're interested in learning about it.
I misspoke in the video - Tesla started adding the Gen4 ECU in October of 2020, which may or may not have CCS Adapter Support. The best way to check is on the touchscreen as I showed in the video.
Merch I wore in the video: sibs-shop.com
I have a May 2021 build Model Y and it has CCS support enabled. Is the October 2021 date you mentioned only applicable to the Model 3?
Possibly! That cutoff date is just what I've seen online, and it's anecdotal.
Can someone tell me where to order the wiring harness? Thanks
Linked in the description
Tesla manual says to always plug in adapter by itself into car first then you can plug in the charger.,
I have a mid 2019 Model S LR. Can CCS support be added? Is the process the same?
Unfortunately I don't think so. As far as aware this is only for model 3/y
Significantly more complicated to add to Model S, unfortunately. Being a later S, you may be more likely to be able to have it at some point, however.
Alan, You are in luck. The Model 3 mod will not work, but you can use the European CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit to get this capability now on your Model S (and X for those owners). I made a video about the process when I completed it on my 2018 Model S. I just uploaded it here on TH-cam if you're interested in learning about it.
Does anyone know if this solution or equivalent will work for North American 2014 Tesla model S?
There is none known right now for older Tesla models.
David Green, You can use the EU CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit (Pre-Refresh version) for Model Ss before June 2016 to get this capability. I have read in some forums that vehicles with Gen 1 charge controllers can not use this modification. I am not sure when the Gen 2 controllers rolled out though so you would have to do some research to see if that is true or not. The EU mod worked great on my 2018 Model S. I just uploaded a video about the process here on TH-cam. Happy to chat more if your interested
I have a 2020 Model Y do you think it is the same configuration for the CCS adapter and ECU ? thanks
I would check. You can check on the touch screen beforehand and peel back the liner to see which ECU you have. The forum post I linked has more details!
Is this the same for the 19 model x?
Not that I'm aware of. See the forum post for more details
One data point: My car was made 9/20 and it is CCS enabled. I guess I got lucky 👍
Whoa, nice!!
Your CCS / harness dates aren't correct. My 8/2020 MY build is OEM CCS enabled.
Hey. Do you know does this upgrade will allow to use ccs2 charging stations? I am using NA TESLA M3 2018 in Europe and here only ccs2 standard available.
Likely no. European standard is a bit different and I'm not sure Tesla offers a retrofit for NA cars in Europe
Can this upgrade be done to a 2019 Model S with FSD Beta?
Nope, Model 3/Y only as far as I'm aware
You can actually use the European CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit to get CCS1 capability here in North America. I bought the kit for my 2018 Model S on EBay and did the hardware myself. I had to find a friend that was able to make the Software/Gateway configuration changes that were required afterwards so the vehicle would recognize the new hardware. My salvaged Model S now charges at 150kW!
Tesla said to check back with them in 2023 for the upgrade for older models.
@@billtcheng2316 that is correct. Tesla has stated at some point in the future (remember Tesla time is different than real life) they will start offering it as a formal program at Service Centers. Unfortunately, I doubt they will offer it to the owners of salvage vehicles.😞
Does anyone knows if there is a hwck for models S 2015 and up
How to download an update but not install it?
The little clock icon will show up meaning it has downloaded, but don't schedule or push the actual installation that restarts the car.
If the charging is free I would do this. Right now I don’t pay for charging. So many free charging stations still around.
Free DC? I doubt it.
i did exactly wat you did in the video and that does not work still the same error code difference is ill go in service mode and reinstall software 16.1.1 hellllppp please
What car do you have?
@@Sibs finally i found out the problem i have an ingenext boost module and i have to remove it and put it back after and now its working thanks
2muchsun the Atlanta company that sells the wire harness adapter wants $1000 shipping. Maybe they don’t know about China post.
That's odd, I'm seeing much cheaper for US shipping.
👍😎⚡️⚡️
Aren’t you afraid you voided your warrant by doing this?
My warranty is already up, so not too worried.
@@Sibs I have a 2018 LR and just bought a Ford lightning and gave my Tesla to my wife. The ford charger is much more powerful and I would like to replace my Tesla charger with it. Tesla is coming out with this this year correct? Any idea on price?
@@techmap4191 no matter what charger you connect the Tesla to, it will max out at 11.5 kW or 48A. The Ford lightning can handle up to 19.2kW or 80A. Not sure which charger you have
Does anyone tried EVGo with 50kW tesla connector vs 100kw CCS connector speeds (makes a difference $$ since EVgo charges per min)?
CCS connector can go up to 200kW, but would be an interesting test!
i dont understand why they haven’t switched to CCS everywhere
they already do that in europe
I think they're kinda "in too deep" at least in the US for using the Tesla port. They've scaled everything using that port, so switching now is tougher.
Tesla was required by law to change to/support CCS in Europe.
@@bigdougscommentary5719 standardization
It’s cheaper to make one big infrastructure than it is for 2 standards
@@Juanguar by that logic, Tesla’s connector should be the standard. Way more Teslas on the road than CCS/1 cars.
Maybe make a new standard that uses the simplicity and ease of use of the Tesla plug with the output potential of CCS/2. If they’re going to do anything, waiting only makes the situation worse.
Thanks for the informative video! Please allow me to return the favour: “kW” is pronounced “kilowatts”!
