    In April I had about 10 plants and am now up to 52. I'm learning as I go and huge leaves are not on my wish list. This morning as I watered my various philodendrons, pothos. prayer plants, pepperomia obtusofolia and crusofolia, and my andonsonii, I was really noticing the different growth patterns. My pothos and philos are all immature at this point and look more bushy than trailing. I wished that you would make a video specifically about the growth patterns in the various plants and voila you mention it. I would love to see more from you about this. ???

    I have the Ilsemanii. I love it so much. I only paid $50 for mine, but I knew the lady that had it. She was downsizing her collection, and I was at the right place at the right time. She has a new growth point in her, and I'm so excited to see what the new leaf looks like.
    I was surprised to not see the Whipple on here. I have two Whipples. They are so gorg!

    I used to have a P. Micans and didn't like it. It eventually died and I told myself that was not a plant for me. Fast forward several years. I was at one of my fav plant shops looking at their newest plants, when a small PERFECT Micans caught my eye and I swear it said my name. I had to bring that baby Micans home. So far it is growing wonderfully for me. I am not a big Philodendron fan and only have my baby Micans, a small Ring of Fire and a Jose Buono baby, in my collection of a little over 100 plants. My rotten little balls of fur know that the fastest way to get my attention, esp. if my two cats are hungry, is to nibble on my plants!

    I adore the verrucosum too but it has a nasty habit of throwing its lower leaves. You end up with a stunning display of top leaves...on a stick and you're forever propagating it to keep it bushy. Soooo much work!!

    Tree fern fiber is something you can use in place of moss, but it’s significantly more expensive. Couldn’t agree more with your list, have most of these but not the splendid, never see them for sale near me and haven’t wanted to mail order or import. And honestly I’ve never heard of one of them but I see your fascination with it! I love the verrucosum but as it gets bigger it doesn’t look as nice as when it’s smaller but I still love it, the amazon sunset is my favorite. As always, a great video, thank you!

      I feel like you'd be able to use your potting medium, as well.
      Moss poles are basically just vertical pot extentions, So I feel like using your potting medium would be the simplest and cheapest.

    I have a young Philodendron billietiae, is growing very slowly and all the leaves tilted to one side, but it's very pretty, as long as it gets some sunlight and moisture.

    I wish my Micans wasn’t fussy. But, I’ve had nothing but problems with her. I’ve had to replace her twice. This last time when she started to go down I just propped the heck out of her and after rooting the cuttings I planted them in PON. Fingers crossed this is the answer for me.

My vining ones, amazing. I haven't quite mastered my micans, but have some nodes propagating to backfill when I repot in spring. 💖

    The only one I have on this list is the Micans and it does grow like a weed! I need to chop it again. I think the Costa Farms Pink Princesses often have pretty marbling. I wish I’d waited. I bought one from a local grower last year when the prices started dropping, but the variegation is inconsistent. My Paraiso Verde went green and stayed green. I’ve tried more heat. Too much light and it burns. Too little and it gets leggy. I haven’t found the secret! I am starting to love my Silver Sword Philodendron now that the top cutting from my original plant is sizing up. Leaves were dying off so I thought I had root rot and chopped and propped a few cuttings. Then I left the base alone and it put back out from the bottom!

    My pink princess broke off her new leaf the other day and I may have been a bit frustrated and yelled at her that I'm not a plant midwife and she should be able to birth her own freakin leaves! My bipenifolium also struggled to birth it's leaves so I chopped it back to its last good leaf and now I've been waiting a month or so for movement. Looks like it's finally going to try and give another leaf in the next week. It's very frustrating to have a plant collection and have to look twice a day at certain plants to make sure it will not break off its own foliage 🤷🏼‍♀️😭
    I realize ppl usually say "but humidity" and my hard answer is no. It was 70 percent humidity in my plant spaces since May. It's still 61 percent. Even if I had a cabinet or terrarium it would be difficult to raise humidity above 70 percent consistently. I don't know if these plants were hybrids or found in the rainforests but my Brazil has never had an issue so it feels like these other plants were created and pushed to market before they were ready since they're technically quite high demand. I by no means have a bald princess, but the number of leaves she's broken or injured on her own is insane! My white knight on the other hand has no issues with its leaves breaking or needing help. I'm hoping that the pink princess will stop her antics as she sizes up. She's about 15 inches tall now and her leaves are getting bigger and she's otherwise less dramatic. If it wasn't for my white wizard and my Brazil I would just say philodendrons are defective and burn them all... 🤯

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lol! I think lots of times people forget too that in the wild plants get rained on, and that probably helps with the leaves unfurling without sticking as well

    • @MarisaAndChew
      @MarisaAndChew 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AlohaPlantLife oh definitely! If I wet my hand then rub the cataphyl the leaf usually is born a few hours later, but it's still annoying to have to pay that much attention to a single plant and then play midwife 🤣 they very clearly need either the water from the habitat itself (not just humidity) or maybe a type of bug to help them open, like how ants help to open Peony flowers. I'm beyond happy I got my PPP at the grocery store with how much work she can be, I think I would be really mad if I had been in the group paying triple digits only to feel like I'm doing something wrong!

    Is it me, or do a lot of these first ones look too similar? The Melanochrysum has to win the prize, but it's true, everyone says they are just so hard to grow, but then doesn't every houseplant have its time limitations? 🌿

    * Philodendron verrucosum L. Mathieu ex Schott is the name..
    .. My Melanochysum is adorable.. She is a baby, and perhaps a little slow growing, but since I got her about 7 month ago she gave me 3 new leaves and there's one more on the way so that will be her 7th leaf 🤗
    .. I love my micans, she is my favorite above them all, even though she apparently got angry with me about a month ago.. She decided to curl up and drop leaves the day after I had to give her a new pot, new soil and added well rooted cuttings to fill up.. But I love her and her colours can take my mind way out of this world..

      @@AlohaPlantLife from what I have noticed is how she hate her roots to be messed with, maybe that's why she's acting up a bit.. Only that can be tricky when removing the old pot and all soil falls apart, no matter how careful you are.. I took new cuttings last night, from the stems where she had dropped her leaves.. I popped them up in perlite and they already look better.. So does the mother 🤗 I keep my hopes up high for you too..

    Petemoss is endangered not sphagnum moss. Sphagnum moss is a fast growing renewable source

    • @AlohaPlantLife
      @AlohaPlantLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Peat moss is less sustainable 100%, but sphagnum is still not sustainable and it affects the development of peat. The majority of the sphagnum moss available to purchase today is coming from fens and bogs where peat moss is found. Sphagnum mosses grow in clumping mats on the uppermost layer of peatlands. That’s why peat moss is composed of partially decomposed organic matter which includes the remains of the sphagnum moss that grows on the top of the surface. Removing the moss therefore affects the development and makeup of the peat below. Now that’s not to say that it isn’t potentially possible to create sustainably farmed sphagnum moss outside of bogs and fens, but the reality is that what’s available for purchase today is not sustainably farmed sphagnum moss.
