NEW Ducati Supersport 950 | Road / Sports Perfection?

  • The Supersport 950 is Ducati's answer to its customers who want something sporty for the street but don't want the super uncomfortable position which goes with it. New styling for 2021 and updated electronics but how does this little V twin compare to the likes of the RS660? Could this be the perfect road bike?

The issue reviewers get wrong all the time is comparing peak HP numbers. Engines make power from tick over to redline. This 950 engine makes it about as perfectly linearly as an electric motor. The total power it makes across the rev range is considerably more than the 660.
But you are right that speed and acceleration are all power to weight. The lighter the bike, the faster it will go given the same power. Keep the 660 up in its power band and it will be faster. The nice thing about the Duc is the whole damn rev range is its power band.
In any event, I'm not trying to set any lap records. On a road bike, a little road hugging weight isn't necessarily a bad thing when it comes to comfort, confidence, and cutting thru a windy day. This reminds me of a smaller version of my ST4s. And that was one of my favorite sporty road bikes ever.
This one is giving me the itch...

Guessing you've ridden one, because you describe my experience perfectly. I had one for a few days as a courtesy bike while my Multi (1200, so you know my perspective) was having it's Desmond. Thought the 950 engine was one of the most perfect road engines I've ever used, and I had 6 years with a gear cam VFR800. Full of character (the burbles when pootling around, the little (probably engineered, but who cares) pops and crackles on he overrun), instant, seamless pull everywhere, exciting to give the beans without being terrifying, and geared perfectly. Couldn't care less about the on paper stuff. It felt amazing, whether full-on going for it or just a nice Sunday morning 50-60% mild pick-me-up pace.

I am so happy that manufacturers are making lower power supersports that are friendlier for road use. Like this one, the aprilia, new R7 (hopefully an R9 as well). What many riders dont know or even understand is how much fun lower powered bikes are to ride fast. 120hp+ is a good time dont get me wrong but there are times i would love to play around on something between 50-100hp.

Or a Triumph with the Tiger 900 engine [retuned for a bit more top end]. I think manufactures are genuinely missing out. We all don't want tall adventure bikes, a naked or a modern classic. Bought my supersport 950s yesterday. :-)
The duc has more torque but it's also quite a bit heavier, the torque is measured without taking weight into account. So you should not make your decision from those numbers but actually ride both of them. Take every test drive you can do, in my experience that's easily possible.

If you want a sports bike for the streets, this is a lot better option than the panigales, if you care about comfort. Essentially its just a monster in the clothing of a panigale. I test rode the older 939 supersport and it was plenty capable, but i was disappointed with the electronics. This seems like a good step in the right direction! It won't be as fast as a panigale on track, let's be real here, it's still way more powerful than what you need on the road! But that's what we want isn't it😂

The bike has similar power to the original 916 superbike. It has plenty of power for road use. I have the previous model and it's fantastic. A mate of mine has 959 and we occasionally swap rides. The Supersport is a far superior road bike. The only small minus is you miss the aggressive personality of the superbikes but you can't have the best of both worlds. The Supersport is a bloody good compromise though.

Agreed. Loved everything about the Supersport S when I tested one a couple of years ago - except for the 'go'. Just felt a bit wheezy compared to the R1200S Beemer I had at the time. Had the old 600ss in the 90's which was great fun but under powered. Glad to see a useable and comfortable proper road sporster instead of the insane horsepower race on totally impractical bikes.
The ultimate road bike in this class was and will for me always remain, the hugely grin inducing aprilia rsvr gen 1 Mille. Nothing I've ridden on the road comes close to fun, sound or visceral exoerience of a proper hairy chested man sized bike.
Ducati fave gone backwards and failed. Tbe old mile would wipe its nose on grunt/power and sound plus was comfy enough for long tours. I'd buy an older gen1 rsvr instead of putting three times the money into this and get a better bike.

Great video as always! Regarding the SuperSport 950 S vs. the RS660 acceleration... On paper, it would look like the RS660 would be faster, but the best numbers during a road test for these bikes are as follows... ** The (Ducati SuperSport 950 S)... 0-60 mph = 3.26 - 1/4 Mile = 10.99 @ 128 mph - Top Speed = 152.9 mph. ** The (Aprilia RS660)... 0-60 mph = 3.29 - 1/4 Mile = 11.23 @ 124 mph - Top Speed = 147 mph. I know these are just magazine tests, but they still use professional equipment, so it gives us a basic idea of how quick these bikes are. I'm guessing the SuperSport 950 S probably has better gearing & it's probably also underrated in it's power figures? Just guessing? Anyway, I love your camera angles, and I absolutely think your MC videos are incredible! Safe travels!

Thanks for posting. I test drove the 2020 model last October. Loved the riding. The one thing I did not like was the exhaust (I know, I am shallow). Your comments are dead on. The quick shifter was like butter. Was tempted to get it, but nothing was coming out Italy at the time. Plus the dealer did not know when the new model would start arriving. Finally, did I mention I was not fond of the exhaust. IMHO, it made the bike look like a toy (to me anyway). It was a bit pricey and the price was pretty close to the Pannigale. Great video, very enjoyable.

Nice thorough review. I moved to the UK from the US last year and picked up a clean used '18 standard SS 939, same weight, power, frame, tires, etc etc as the 950. Wanted something that felt new-to-me different than the trusty '12 speed triple I had for years and really liked. The SS hits the spot. Yes, the SS is as you say a wonderful bike for the road: comfortably sporty with a punchy engine with power just were it should be and great handling with a nice balance between stability and quickness. I'd rather gave ohlins but the standard's marzochi fork / sacks shock feels darn nice to me. The 950 seems to have lost a bit of mpg.

Surprising grunt this engine in 821 and 937 hypermotard formats when worked hard - Strong to 200kph and stretch to 220 sort of thing - Hopefully euro5 hasn't neutered that - And a pity only 16l tank as 200km range a bit light for touring unless constantly planning or filling up everywhere - But Ducati has created some very nice lightweight zip style panniers for touring on the Supersport anyway - Based on old Hyperstrada bags by the looks and they were superb - weighed nothing, quick to mount and good volume
