- This is very simple and quick way to make wooden dowel rods using a simple method of making dowel cutter. This dowel cutter is made by using a 3/4" hex socket and it can make wooden dowels of diameter 12 mm.
Finally a wood worker from india, who can post youtube videos in english. thats a rarest of rare combination.
No talk, no commercials, no bull****.......just action. I love it!
I had 12 commercials lol
There was a shitload of ads. This was gay.
But about 9 mins too long. Plus I’ve got plug cutters for shorter dowels
I don't have a single adds.... Learn to pay for premium and you'll never see adds in your life on any of TH-cam channel.....

Very good, I have not seen an idea on a U-Tube as good as this, in a long while. Well done.
Reminds me of those pesky

@@marshalllhiepler >D HAHAHAHAHA well played
That's cool, and I really like making my own stuff, but just yesterday I bought a 4 foot x 1/2" dowel rod at the Home Depot for $1.80. That was a lot easier. :-)
I was thinking the same thing lol I mean it's cool and all but I would rather spend my time on other things
But what if you needed an 8' dowel for some reason? Or if you needed one made from something other than oak?
Yeah this is a waste of time
@@michaelputnam2532 that’s a good point
Yeah, Try that in Norway. They are very expensive. Everything is expensive here. We are forced to make many things to use. Steel is the worst. Many many things we need to order online to get. Norway is a shit place to live when you do hobby`s. You are a lucky guy :)
I needed cherry dowels for a project last year and couldn’t find any without special ordering. This will definitely save my butt in the future. Nice job.
Man, that has to be one of the most long-winded ways I have seen to make a dowel making tool.
Given how easily the socket was drilled out this may have been the best use for it.
Steel tubing works just as well.
No drilling sockets out and the block is optional, too, if you have a vice.
That will be the one socket that he will need.
@@paulbarthol8372 😂
I was thinking the same thing about the socket...
Junk sockets are handy to have for many things with some imagination. Allowing anything to be attached to a drill motor is a plus. It was junk before now it has a purpose.
Usually I use fluted dowels but if I ever need to make decorative dowels that will contrast with my project, this would be the perfect solution. Thank you so much for this ingenious idea!
Seeing that I typically work with exotic hardwoods it's perfect! Way better than my vise and a cut sanding belt. You'll never find dowels in any of the woods I use and if you did it'd cost too much anyways. Thank you brother!
I was about to post that this is a little like turning a car into a bicycle - destroyed tools to save pennies on dowels? But when you mentioned exotic woods ... fair enough. Good point.
Seems to me this is the simplest but most effective method for the job. Great job. Thanks foo sharing.
Dad, "Son! Have you seen my 3/4" socket?"
Dad: _"Son, have you seen my socket set?"_
nope, dog ate
He would have used the 10mm if it wasn't already missing.
@@domderaimo based on life experience I have come to the conclusion that 10mm socket bits either A: do not exist and are simply a short lived shared hallucination of us all, or B: are made out of a radioactive isotope with an extremely short half life such that they immediately decay into energy invisible to the naked eye. This is the most reasonable explanation for the fact that they instantly disappear.
😂
I just made some 1.25" oak dowels today on the router table with a 5/8" round over bit, much faster. Nice video, I like your ingenuity
Hey 👋🏻, The guy doesn’t have router table... 🤷🏻♂️
That's what I do too. Sometimes you might end up with a tiny bit of a bead; a quick pass with a block plane or even just the back of a chisel (skew helps) fixes it perfectly.
Hi
I see this is an old post, but hopefully you see these questions .
What bit do you use? How do you set it up and feed the piece through?
Nice work. I've made many dowels, and there are several ways to do it. This cutter is great, good job.
If large dowels are needed, say 1-1/8", cut material 1-1/2" square on table saw, then rip 1/8" off corners, creating a 1-1/8 octagonal profile. Then shape one end to fit drill, the other to fit a hole in a wood block. Clamp block in vice, spin workpiece with the drill, and use 36-grit paper, in the other hand, rhythmically up, and down the shaft until smooth. Works for any size dowel when larger ones are needed.
Repeatable production of an essential part of woodworking. It’s the small things that count (and cost)! Thanks good work!

At first, I thought you were making an attachment to hold wood onto a lathe. Pretty clever and those sockets are very cheap at flea markets and yard sales. Thank you for sharing your idea!
FANTASTIC!!! I will definitely do this. Dells have become way too expensive here in South Africa. I'd rather make my own. Thank you for sharing this EXCELLENT method.
Good to know.. if the ammo shortage continues we'll all be using bows and arrows.
I would use a sling shot with 50 cal lead. Also mount a wisker biscuit to it and you can shoot arrows. Easier to backpack around with.

I think this is great and will save me a lot of money. These dowels are very expensive where I live. Genius! Thanks for the upload
Not sure if this will work for hardwoods but great idea. There's lots of reasons to make your own dowels, not like you can buy every species at HD. If you are hiding all of them sure go buy some but not all dowels are hidden. Some are decorative, you'll want specific wood doing that. Nice Video.
I actually like this. I don’t know if I’d do it but in case of some bizarre dowel shortage now i know how. Thanks for this upload! 👍🏽
This is a great idea, impressive. You make your own dowels because you can't run to the store and buy them made from species of wood other than pine, or other light colored woods. Go see if you can buy dark woods like mahogany or walnut, cherry etc....
I doubt this would work on walnut.
Just FYI, I get all of my dowels and square stock from Grizzly.com. They periodically have discounts on them and that is when I stock up on Walnut, oak, and many other species they carry. Woodcraft.com is another good source of discounted materials. $3.00 is not bad for a 3/8" walnut dowel.
You can also buy actual dowel cutters and cut your own from any fancy wood you are working with. I would think anybody that works with expensive wood species could spare about $14 for a set of dowel cutters that are going to give you a nice, clean cut.
I like it. Half the fun is making the jig. The other half is making the dowels. Great ideal. Thanks
I want to see a video on the homemade compressor back there!

Got to hand it to you the gold award for doing something out of a socket nice job bro.
The simplest way to make wooden dowels assuming you already have a table saw, angle grinder, heavy duty sander, turret drill and really good hand drill.
This makes a lot of sense though, as those tools can be acquired over time, and most serious builders have all the above. Things like dowels though, are much more expensive in the long run to buy premade. While a beginner will find buying a single dowel for a task much cheaper, when you do it over and over those cumulative costs really add up. By using tools you already have to make a new tool, someone who goes through a lot can make recurrent stock from scraps.
That was my first thought.
These tools are readily available for people who will be doing this full time
Unless you require pro equipment
Harbor freight
Drill press $100 or less for the bench top
Angle grinder $30
Table saw Warrior $150
Bauer drill kit $50
Bench top sander $60
Sockets and other bits $100 or less
You're going to need this stuff anyway for most woodworking projects so it's worth the investment for a DIYer or hobbyist
@@colinklang or today on Amazon, an eight piece dowel cutter set: $13.99. Effortless, cheap, far better performance, and no destroyed sockets in the process.
only one word for this fella... Genius
You should heat up and oil harden that socket... would last way longer and not much more work... Nice video btw!
I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a joke or not, but it's funny. Dowels are super cheap. A lifetime supply is less than that socket and the time. But kootos for being self sufficient. I'll give you a like.
I only the other day needed some dowel. I’m going to make one of them. Thank you😊
La cita con
I found an eight piece set on Amazon for $11. I thought that was probably the simplest way to get dowel cutters.
Haha, was about to go look. I think it would arrive before I was done trying to make this too.
Necessity is the mother of inventions.
There are no ideas or brain power needed to go and buy tools online. But to think the idea, create the tool and make it work that way, is genius and a reason to admire.
@@JoeyRam. of course, to make this tool required a socket, a drill press, a drill bit, a Forstner bit, a piece of wood, and a grinder. If you can afford all that, I don't think you need to skimp on dowel cutters. Personally, I prefer to keep my sockets as sockets because I might need that particular size one day. I would hate to be having trouble removing a bolt one day only to discover that some genius has turned my socket into a dowel cutter. Perhaps at that point I could find another genius video about how to grind your hammer into a socket. Wouldn't want to waste time waiting on Amazon, or run over to Harbor Freight or Home Depot if I'm in a hurry. Nah! Because I have no idea that I might be needing a dowel cutter on my next project. Absolutely no idea. And it would probably be so much more intelligent to waste even more time hacking up my other tools rather than just buying what I need before I need it.
@@brianmoore581 i found it easier and cheaper to pop down to my local DIY store , pay a couple of quid for a 8ft length of dowel and just cut off what i need
@@brianmoore581 The tools you mentioned are basic ones needed for woodworking, not rocket science. So there's no need to afford them in order to make a dowell cutter out of an old socket easy to replace. Plus, not all your favorite American hardware stores are globaly available. He did a cutter and SHARED for a reason. But I understand why you don't get yet the meaning of: own idea💡 and prefer to pay for it to someone else.
Looks great for making specialty dowels. I could not tell what method you were planning on using to make this, so great work on ingenuity! Thanks
I'm making a compact one with a welded cross handle for my pack to dowel arrow shafts. I wish you had run a green stick through yours. That would be cool. Thanks for the idea.
I bet that would work great for making arrows.
My thoughts exactly. Also masts for model sailing ships
Exactly, but let me tell you something, it worked for him very good because the wood he's using is very dry, if u used not fully dry wood, when the stick is getting out of the hole while it is spinning it will start to bend, so make sure to place some kind of a pipe there that can hold it
@@Omniverse0 Maybe a hand drill powered lathe type set up?
Cool ,the bigger the socket the bigger the dowel.👍
Only useful if there's a Harbor Freight nearby
This is how mom used to peel potatoes but with a big 65mm socket her mashed potatoes were the best
For some people I hear whispers of “just buy it down the shops”. Well to them I’d say, “I’m glad you have that option available to you” because chief, that ain’t the world. It’s good to have one of these fine items mocked up, you know, just in case.
Simple and hreat use on an old worn out socket which i have plenty of. Thank you my friend.
Fantastic! What else is there to say! So simple and ingenious! Got some old rusty sockets kicking around that I have no use for. Paul Sellars just made 50ft of dowel out of 2 X 4s using only a Stanley no4 plane. He then made a cup of tea then watched the last 3/4 of this.
This is no way near simple and most important it is not a "simple method" it is first and foremost about having a set of special tools
@@DrJeckyllJunior For the average wood worker or tool worker this is simple. Takes about 10 minutes.
@@Alamyst2011 No way you do that in less than half an hour. In 10 minutes you can rush up a dowel plate, though. If you're gonna be drilling metal, you can't get any simpler and quicker than that, and you even get several sizes as bonus. Slap it on a piece of wood, or just stick it in a vise, and you're done.
I missed the part where any of this was simple
I know. What a project.
LOL or the fact that this tool would last maybe like a day max
This isn't that much work..... if you think this isn't simple. Go back to the blue pill kid.
@@markovichglass it kinda is for the end result when you can buy 12mm dowel rods cheap as chips.
Not worth my time and effort, you can buy it for $1 or 2
All you see online is plug and tenon cutters. You would need an open ended one to make a long dowel. I guess you could buy a plug or tenon bit and cut the solid shaft section off then mount it in wood and lock it from turning with a screw.
Real cool video man.
Very impressive....necessity is the mother of all invention.

There are 508 comments already and I scrolled through a few. I just wanted to let people know that Lee Valley Tools sells dowel makers that work like manual pencil sharpeners. You chuck your blank same as he does and let it rip. If you don't have time to craft one from a socket. I have three sizes of the Lee Valley dowel jigs. They work fabulous!! Great ingenuity here though! He essentially made a plug cutter. Sweet!
Really nice but honestly I hope I never have to do this

You do know that they sell dowels at just about every lumber yard, home improvement store and craft shop. And they come in a variety of sizes.
You can't usually specify wood, and if you can the price is outrageous.
Great job!!! Very smart trick, thanks!
You should get a patent for this ingenious Idea! Get it made in China and probably sell thousand of them on Amazon or eBay. No such tool can be bought today. Very good indeed.

And, it is the perfect use for cheap-assed sockets that are manufactured in China also.
You could modify the sockets right there at the child-labor sweat shop, BEFORE someone skins their knuckles due to socket failure. 😆

Nice setup! At some point, you should get a riving knife put on that table saw, I've been kicked in the stomach by boards coming back, and a riving knife prevents that.
Inverted circ won't have the power to kick, tbh it sounds like it was struggling to cut
@@thomasdoherty6876
Time to sharpen the blade, while the angle grinder is still plugged in. 😂
I've been a cabinet maker since 1992, and bought my 1st cabinet saw soon after - Delta 10" Unisaw. I don't recall if it came w/a riving blade, although I never had one installed on the table saw, due to varying blade thicknesses & the constant use of cut-off sleds & jigs.
One day I was cutting a piece of cherry that had juvenile wood grain and while ripping a small piece, nearing the end of the rip, it kicked back into the palm of my hand. 9 stitches later, I learned about installing a blade damper.
Since that day, in all the time since, perhaps (1) time have I had a cut-off come back at me. You need 1/2 to 1/3 of the diameter of your saw blade for the proper saw blade damper size, i.e. a 10" saw blade needs a 5" blade damper. Sure, you'll lose a nominal amount of the saw blades' over all depth of cut, but I'd rather have to flip stock to rip all the way through wood than dodge cut off kick-back. I swear by their use.
Simply brilliant !
The router method with drill to spin the cut wood is less likely to split the wood. And you can make them any diameter.

Only if you give my best, to Bill and Ted ....

Is easy to make fluted dowels. Drill a hole in a block of wood and drive nails in the side of it, drive the dowel through.
I'm not allowed to drive
The idea is good but needs development. For example the die needs cutting edges sharpened and honed. Then perhaps tempered. Lot of work when there are simpler more effective ways to get a dowel. Repeatability is a key.
Fine job! Highly commendable.
