Looking for sea shells after a storm. What crazy things washed up on the beach this week?

  • Looking for sea shells after a storm is always thrilling. I was very excited to watch the storm pass by and anticipate what sea shells I'd find when I went to the beach in the morning.
I didn't get to go to the beach I wanted to, but I did get to go to the island I wanted so I made the best of it. I came prepared and found myself a whole bunch of beachy goodness!

When I was just a kid, about seven or eight years old, you could walk for miles on the beaches of South Florida without meeting another person. On the shore near Ft. Myers Beach, while walking alone and picking up shells to add to my already sizeable collection. I found a huge, perfect Junonia!
That beautiful shell turned me into a dedicated collector and by the time I reached my twenties, I had amassed an enormous collection of shells and various gifts from the sea. Sadly, it was all taken from me after I moved to Tennessee over thirty years ago, breaking my mermaid's heart.
I still have a pair of ancient Queen Helmet shells, each nearly the size of a soccer ball. They are my prizes from the sea, though both were gifted to me by another collector.
Going along with you on your shelling excursions takes me back to the beaches of my youth and I especially love the quiet time when you allow the voice of the waves to wash over my beach-starved soul. It brings tears to my eyes every time I close my eyes and imagine that I'm sitting in the sand with the salty sea breeze teasing my hair to play along.
Your videos are such wonderful medicine for me. Thank you from the bottom of my landlocked heart!
I really like to watch your videos when I cannot sleep. Your peaceful, calming voice, along with that sound I know and love, the lullaby of the Gulf, help me to fall into a restful slumber. I greatly appreciate your contribution to my life. Hope you find a Junonia soon!
Oh, just so you know, I found lots of those Cross Hatched Lucines along Pensacola Beach. Perhaps one got moved by the storm...?
I think your mystery shell is a lion's paw, but I could be mistaken.

Thank you for taking me down your memory lane. It sounds absolutely lovely. I can imagine myself when I say, "10 years ago, you could...." as I've only been here for 2-1/2 years, so I'm making up for a lot of lost time.
There are certain times when I'm making my videos that I am overcome at how beautiful nature can be. I try as hard as I can to capture the moment, but I wish everyone could experience it for themselves, just once. You're very lucky to have such wonderful memories!
I will find that junonia one day. Or it will find me. And as I hunt, I'm having the best time exploring the beaches to see what treasures the gulf has washed up that day.
Thank you so much for coming along with me on my beach walks!

We love your channel...we take a walk with you every morning. I am 70 and disabled from a car accident. I used to constantly walk the beach and at least 3 miles a day. I miss it. Not enough beaches provide beach wheelchairs. I love it when they do. My husband is able to take me right to the water!!! Very happy moments. Please keep taking us for beach walks. And we love our Beach Time!!

I wonder if you have seen this video yet. Lovers Key has free beach wheelchairs for use at their park! th-cam.com/video/39TKDgO5xEQ/w-d-xo.html
One of the things I really like about FMB and Lovers Key is the hard packed sand. It's much kinder on wheels than some of the other beaches. Thank you so much for coming along with me on my beach walks and watching my videos ❤️

I love watching your videos and look forward to them every Sunday! I learn alot and I LOVE how well you show your treasures when you find them and how well the footage is of the beach walks, how you edit them to do the voice over explaining so well and so informational!! I love to hear the ocean and beach sounds (birds etc) too but I don't like when people have footage and the wind is so bad that I can not hear what someone is saying because it is so windy and yours are never like that and I REALLY appreciate that!!! Thank you for making great videos that are so pleasant to watch!!!

I actually started making videos a bit before I started beachcombing, so I have a little bit of a head start when it comes to the whole production of a video. I want to make it easy on me, however taking the extra time to do a voice over once I'm home gives me lots of flexibility and also creates a better viewing experience. Thank you for letting me know you appreciate the work I put into my videos! ❤️

When you started finding the chestnuts, I thought to myself, ‘I hope she finds a nutmeg so I can see the difference in one video up close,’ then you did and my wish came true when you had them in your hand at the same time. I love when you show us the differences in shells that seem identical...like the lace and apple murexes. Thanks for sharing and educating me!

I'm new to Sharmon's channel, and I'm binging on the older shows. I saw this and my attentions turned to a lamp I have with a jar base. (It was full of shells when Mom brought it home. Im land locked here.).
."What ? Is the lamp full of about a kazillion shells whitish, chalky.... No !. Chestnut Turbans ?. Yes !!!" I opened that sucker up and soaked a few of them, and had the similar patterns she was finding !. Even found an operculum !. The lamp had a big fish vertebra, a few bits of finger coral and a broken fighting Conch which is very interesting.
About the Nutmeg: they have a more intricate apperature opening than theTurbans do. Alot going on in that mouth. I'd like to have a bigger one some day, mine is about BB sized, lol ! I Enjoyed your comment, Blessings !

Yes, you have been very helpful in educating this shell huntress. I've learned a lot from you about the variety, size, color, etc., of shells in your area. And, your videos are topnotch: you clearly spend a lot of time recording & editing your videos, going out to great beaches, hauling your treasures home, cleaning and displaying your beautiful finds and providing a lot of tips (education). You talk about Shell Crafts, but I haven't seen any quite yet (I'll be looking after this vid). Many Thanks for all you do! 😀 ❤

In case any of the mystery shells are still mysteries, yes the one at 19:45 is a red brown ark, the chunky big thing at 27:25 is the bottom valve of a leafy jewel box (the biggest jewel box species of several species in FL) and the one at 33:30 appears to be a crested oyster. You had some nice finds! Hinged lady in waiting venus and the depressed top shell in particular.....

Thanks for the IDs! With some help I was able to figure out the red brown ark as well as the oyster but I got a whole lot of different opinions on what that other lump was. Hello, wish I could shell further south. I'm obsessed !! I loved shelling a few miles off Tarpon Springs on what we call the North Sandbar wich is off Anclote Key.... I have buckets of Chestnut Turbans. I find it interesting they aren't as plentiful further south. Also the amount of sand dollars we find is insane. Unfortunately coming across a dead one is very very rare They are always live. Just running your toes threw the sand carefully you will see so many.... Now the sad news is our sandbar that was there for about 20 years is now gone. We mafe many great memories out there camping, having great holiday gatherings and the yearly 'SAVE THE SAND BAR' fundraisers.

Oh that's so sad that sandbar is gone! Maybe a few good storms will pile the sand back up again. I just looked up Anclote Key and it looks like a super fun place to explore! I communicate with another sheller up in that area and she tells me about all the turbans she finds. One day I'll get up there to see for myself! Thank you so much for watching my video!

    Hi my beach friend,
That rough sea with the seafoam is how the North Sea in the Netherlands looks most of the time, including the wind. 😁
Unfortunately we don't have those amazing shells, just some simple clams.
You did great in the Chestnut Turbin department! And all the "new" species you've never found before. What a great haul you had that morning at the beach. 😍
You really start to wonder what all the other people on the beach were looking for, since you've found so many amazing shells.
I've been searching online for that brown clam you've found. It looks like a "Barbatia Barbata" and is also found on the West Coast of Florida. But maybe I'm totally wrong, just guessing the species.
Time for me to go to sleep now, it's already 2.43 AM. But I wanted to see your beach adventure before I went to bed.
Wishing you a lovely Sunday and a wonderful week. And thank you for your kind words last week, it really touched me. 💕
Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤, Ilona

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello beach friend! I am VERY impressed with your shell research! I think the shell is a red-brown ark (someone else identified it) and it is indeed in the Barbatia family - I believe it's a Barbatia domingensis! It's a little tough to figure out the exact shell but if you can figure out the "family" it's in, it's a little easier. I was coming up with nothing!
I hope all the news you have been getting is good news and I hope you have a wonderful week. ❤️❤️❤️

I knew I loved all the different ones but I had no idea what they were called and honestly, I didn't know there was such a variety in southwest Florida. I'm going to Shell Camp in January and I'm hoping I find two of the ones that you found so many of on this episode, the chestnut turban and the nutmegs! I watched your presentation on the Beach-combing Magazine special and I thought it was great! Hello shell monster that I am glad I created 🤗 If I can make the beach and the shells just "this" much more interesting, then my job is done. I like to think of it like a museum - it's way more interesting when you know a bit of the history behind the art. I think the beach can be the same way. If you know a little bit about what you're finding, it makes it just a wee bit more entertaining. I'm so glad I've been able to help you along on your beach knowledge journey and I am super jelly about your Shell Camp. I might look into that for 2023!

Shell Camp!?! 😲 What a great idea! That sounds FUN! I absolutely love shells; they are like precious gemstones & no two are alike. Have a great time at Shell Camp. I wish we had something like that out here in California, but even finding shells out here on the West Coast is challenging. Guess I'll have to put Florida on my bucket list (I've always wanted to go to FL). Happy Shelling 😊

Just wanted to thank you. After a year of watching your videos (the best for shelling on a beach) I have been educated to a point of knowing what to look for and seeing things I would have probably overlooked. For the last 12 years, we usually spend 3 weeks on North Captiva during mid October - early November. This last visit, for the first time ever, I found flats, apple murex, banded tulips and lace murex. I was like a kid in a candy store. There was a storm which I welcomed because of the great shelling after. However it wasn't until the third or fourth day before we encountered the Mother of all shell piles and her daughters. Amazing what nature shows us. Thank you for bringing enthusiasm and expertise to a most enjoyable video experience.

I agree with Anna Marie. I found so many chestnut turbans on Honeymoon Island I had to stop collecting. I also had to stop collecting the operculums because they were everywhere. I was there in May. I also found long-spined star shells there. I had never seen them before. They are beautiful!

Your videos are great for even the seasoned sheller. You're keeping our eyes sharp! I've learned SO much about the correct names of shells & sea critters from watching your videos, too.
I can't tell you how many times you've named a shell & I'm like, "So, that's what I found in Myrtle Beach!"
We don't find shells nearly as beautiful or as plentiful as what's on your beaches. However, the occasional exotic shell pops up & now I know what it is.
We find Olives the way you found those Chestnut Turbans today. That's our state shell.

Last week the interview video q&a by beachcombing life popped up on my feed and it's nice to connect a name and a face to your voice. I've been shelling the coast of Maine for over 50 years and will be on Sanibel for a week in mid-December. I've been twice before and love the island. Maybe we'll cross paths on the beach. So you said something like “I scratch my head, do people miss these”? I can shed a little light on your beach….hahaha. I’m a Michigander, and a Lake MI Rock Hunter, but I think I can speak for most of us. When us up north vacationers go shelling, most want to find “the ultimate, whole” shell, and by whole shell, we mean a whole half. We look for the pretty mauve/peach colorful (calico) scallops, lettered olive, kids love to find kitten paws!! We love whole juvenile fighting Conch, whole Auger’s, etc. Lady In Waiting are a favorite as long as there’s color to them, otherwise, those are our last shell to pick up if we’re failing with the others as those are pretty muted cream colors, but they’re usually “whole halves”. While watching your video my head kept saying, ooo grab that scallop, grab that one, there’s another! Most don’t even pick up the Turkey Wing, thinking they are broken because of the “half” flat edge. I think they’re beautiful! I have learned quite a bit from this short video about the Chestnut Turbin, Spiny Jewel Box and that “Lacy thing”. My “hope to find” would be a jeunonia, or a Wentletrap!! Hopefully this shed some light what we look for and what we leave behind. Except for me….I love to look for the out of the ordinary as well and being a rock hunter along the shores of Lake MI, eye catches those “oooo, look at this”! Oh! That whole ball “thing” looked somewhat like our Petosky stones, but only the top. Thank you for reading this!! Enjoying your video’s!!

My shelling habits have definitely changed since I get to go so often and I've learned so much. I usually let the beach decide what I'm going to keep that day, but boy it was strange to have so many people around missing all those turbans! I like to find the things I've never seen before or things that are just plain ol' weird. Thanks for shedding some light as to why I get lucky when there's so many other people hunting! Good luck with your future hunts as well!

  • @indyfan2056
    @indyfan2056 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it was a day to look and find textured shells and I am really not surprised that most people did not see them. I think most people look for color only. That is only part of what I have learned watching your shelling videos! Those flats I probably would have thought were broken parts of a scallop at one time. I once found a bonnet and didnt know what it was thank goodness I kept it and and looking through my shells this year found it (again) mixed in with a lot of my other common shells! I think too the parking time limits make you rush along faster than you would like for sure!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It's funny what people consider great shells or keepers can be different from sheller to sheller. I remember the first scotch bonnet I found - all beat up from a storm but I was so excited! I've since replaced it with a few good ones I found over on the East Coast. At this point I almost always keep the strange or mystery shells I find so I can try to figure out what they are and if I should keep them 😅

Thank you for letting me know Bonnie. I'm glad I'm getting you to the beach and helping you identify the shells as well. I appreciate you coming along with me on my beach walks!

So many videos to make and so little time! I would like to do a shell ID video - I just need to find the time. One of these days I'll get to it! In the meantime, thank you for coming along with me!

Just got back last night and spent Sunday and Monday exactly where you were.
Found so many turbans, like you! And found those funny little seedy looking things too!
The water was so low you could walk around those rocks at the point. And also.... a broken baby Junonia!

A junonia! Good for you! When I was there it didn't look like the tide height even mattered the gulf was still angry and it was so windy but I'm so glad you found a bunch of goodies too!

Hello beach friend! I have learned so many practical things from you like the names of the shells and how to clean them, but for me the most important thing is that you take us with you when you go shelling! I love the sea and shelling but I don't live near it so I don't have the opportunity to shell frequently. For all those reasons I am very grateful! Keep up your excellent work ❤️👏

I moved here to be close to the beach but I honestly never knew how much I would fall in love with all these shells! I am so lucky to live here and I love sharing all the beautiful things I find while I'm out beachcombing. Thank you for coming along!

Just love our weekly beach walks! A couple years ago I was at Tarpon Springs and took a boat tour to Anclote Key Preserve State Park where the chestnut turbans literally just rolled up to my feet one after another. Excited you found so many flats and the hinged calico clam! See you next week!!!

I have picked up thousands shells and I still get really excited when I see a bunch of them or a beautiful shell is just sitting there on the beach. Next week is going to be crazy fun! Hope you have a great week!
