I am a substitute teacher. My district has permanent substitute at each school. If no one is out we work with kids who are missing assignments, help teachers give make up tests, help with lunch room duties. We are still visible in the school and we are know and respected by the students (K-8). There are 3 of us at each school and that helps a lot. I love being a sub and I wish more people would do the work, but I understand why they don't.

I hear you, but I also think it is important to recognize that this issue does not fall on our administrators. We are experiencing a national shortage. This is a systems-level issue. While central office certainly plays a role in recruiting/retaining substitute teachers this shortage is something that we need to address at the national level. Administrators are feeling this issue as much as us teachers!

@@mr.kylecohen I do agree with you that this is a chronic problem across-the-board nationwide. I’m not saying all administrators are like that but the ones I have run across sometimes put unreal expectations On their teaching staff which makes teachers get burnt out. I also feel like that if we don’t address this issue soon we’re gonna run into a problem with there not going to be enough teachers to actually teach and our main focus and priority should be to students.

As long as you have a bachelor’s degree, you are able to “sub” in a classroom in our district. But, those with teaching degrees won’t sub since they get pigeon-holed as a sub and don’t get considered for full-time positions since then the district would lose a sub with actual credentials. Vicious cycle. Maybe if they got paid fairly, they would considered subbing more. Much respect for teachers and all they do for their students!

I was in education for 12 years and left for all these reasons and more. I know so many others who have left or who are making plans to change careers. The public is grossly misinformed and the comments I hear/read about teachers getting the pay they deserve, have easy jobs, are just unnecessarily complaining, etc... is heartbreaking, discouraging, disappointing and makes me feel hopeless. I even got this in my own family. I am at a loss as to how to change this. The current political climate is so dividing and people are so deeply rooted in their opinions and beliefs...I don't know if it can be changed. Keep posting these videos...starting a conversation may reach at least a few and get the ball rolling towards some change. Thank you.

This is a huge issue in our district. Our reading specialists, ESL teachers, and specials teachers were having to cover classes in the beginning of the year and it was just SO unfair to the kids who missed out on those desperately needed services. Now, we are having to split students up into other classes when a teacher is absent which is just so unfair and stressful, not to mention we don’t find out until the morning of. And if a specials teacher is absent, we just have to put in for a missed prep. Or in my case as a co-teacher, find some time in the day to leave (which I literally cannot do, it is a co-taught class for a reason). It is just so frustrating. We can’t go all year like this!! Thank you for speaking about this.

My district is also experiencing a huge shortage in subs. I am having to take my first day of in almost two years and thankfully our in house sub is available and secured for that day because no has picked it up and it has been in the system for five days now!! The struggle is real. If subs don't show, we have to pull itinerant teachers and staff or split classes among other teachers on your grade level team. Love you videos! They are so helpful to meEvn though I have been around for quite a while. This is my 30th year as a teacher, but I love fresh and new ideas from younger teachers. It keep me motivated!! Thank you!

Permanent subs in my district have bus driving duty. They start routes at 5:30 AM, do their sub duties, get back on the bus route and aren't finished until 4:30-5:00 PM. It's insane. Same with TAs who are being pulled from their regular assignments to sub. We've had tons of TAs and permanent subs quit because they just cannot wake up at 5 AM regularly for such little compensation.

I teach down south, and we have ONE reliable sub for our K-5 school. Our aides, non-homeroom teachers, and academic coaches are having to cover classes when a teacher is out. It's crazy. Most schools that I hear of in my state are pretty much the same. No subs.

My district is also experiencing a sub shortage. Though my building feels that worse than other buildings in my district due to subs not wanting to sub in my building for a variety of reasons, namely the area my building is located in. To compensate, since there are three teachers per grade level if a teacher has to be out the other two teachers split the class between the two rooms and keep on with business as usual. In many ways, this is what we prefer because we aren't losing instructional minutes, but it definitely does not alleviate the stress of having additional bodies in our rooms. We still get our plan time, but our district is even finding more and more ways to take up our time, making it extremely difficult to work strictly contract hours. We get plan time 4 days a week, with early release on Wednesdays, but admin takes two of our plan times for other district-mandated reasons and on Wednesdays, it is district-mandated PD. It is tough and the only reason I continue is that I love my students.

My reply was "check your drink before we. leave". It was 7.00. Nasty. Got another, and still not great. Took the bad one home and it tipped over in the frig.....disaster! Starbucks doesn't have what they need to make the drinks. Taste before leaving please.

I'm with you, but I also see burnout at the administrative level. This is not on our administrators, unfortunately, but a system that is not built for all kids, students, teachers, AND administrators to thrive. In most circumstances, administrators are not even able to do their actual jobs because of things like staffing and coverage. We need to really look at our system from all levels and reimagine the future for our kids!

We are short subs and paras. People are not happy when paras are pulled out of rooms to sub. The problem with is that then that student doesn’t have that 1:1 support with the same adult they feel comfortable with. It’s all a mess. People need to relook at the education system and value their staff.

In the past, if a substitute were not available, then the students would be split up and sent in groups of five to different teachers on campus. The covering teachers would receive $25 of extra pay for the day. Due to the pandemic restrictions that my school district has in place, no students can be spilt up and sent to other classrooms. Teacher specialists from the district or resource teachers are asked to cover. This means that they are not able to offer the support that they would give to other teachers. Thank you for your video presentation. There is one more week left until Thanksgiving break. Take care.

It's a sad day when we pay people who work at McDonalds more then the people who help raise our children. I work in an elementary school and every single teacher I know spends their own money on supplies because there isn't enough funding for basic supplies. They also buy kids things like birthday cakes when we discover a child whose parents can't afford one themselves and even things like coats. Yes they get summers off but I promise you the unpaid over time they put in while school is in session far exceeds the time they get off. And the expectations of parents is really outrageous. About a month ago we had a new student and the parent expected the school to potty train his son. Right now I'm dealing with a boy who comes to school and immediately goes to sleep until first recess (11am) because his parents let him stay up all night watching scary movies. He is 5 years old. And now teachers get to deal with angry parents who don't want their child to wear a masks. This includes screaming and threatening teachers who have no control over district rules. They are underpaid, underappreciated and doing one of the most important jobs in the world.
