    -and as much as I adore the Viper, the first generation is a remarkably bewildering achievement of huge weight in a small package. You see one in person and it's rather small dimension wise! ...then you realize it weighs about as much as a dying star.
    They really were on a shoestring budget with the 1st Viper tho, even ended up sourcing a few suspension bits from the Dakota pickup! Later generations were SO much better.
    At the time though it was the goddamned messiah to Dodge's image problems.

      @@michaelkniazuk6418 in terms of reliability the viper will be going long after the others have packed up! However my favourite car of the bunch is the Aston Martin. Its desperately unreliable and massively overpriced. But its coach built and there was a 600bhp version. TVR admitted that they modified that Cerbera hence its win. A 600bhp Vantage wouldn't have won anyway. But it's my pick. Followed by the Porsche. Speed aside the TVR was poorly made and very unreliable. Noisy, cramped and uncomfortable. How do I know the TVR was modified? Because 350bhp isn't enough to win a mile long drag race.

      I guarantee they made that Viper lose on purpose. They hated American cars at the time and when they put it against Euro cars, it couldn't show them up. I've seen races where that Viper beat up hard on a similar Lotus V8 so this just doesn't make sense.

    • @Stu282
      @Stu282 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Deep_Dive I think a lot of early Cerbs had that race spec engine to start with. Have you seen the Top Gear road test with JC from around this time? When he lifts the bonnet you can see the claimed “4.2” has what appears to be carbon inlet trumpets like the silicone ones fitted on a typical 4.5.

    • @gr-s5775
      @gr-s5775 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Deep_Dive Really? The AJP 8 engines came in two standard configurations, a 4.2 producing about 360 bhp and a 4.5 producing about 420. The ‘red rose’ version made about 440bhp. This was no one off special.
      My little 3.6 FFF makes nigh on 400bhp and that’s not hype, it’s fact. The Al Melling speed six and speed 8 engines are still phenomenally quick when compared with today’s exotica. It’s such a shame that after Jeremy Clarkson fell out with Perter Wheeler he insisted on slagging off TVRs at every opportunity, particularly on reliability issues.
      There is nothing like a TVR, a car that you have to drive not be driven by.

    I remember thinking that Porsche with 402 bhp, better traction off the line should have won coz the Cerbera only has 350 bhp but the 911 weighs 1500 kgs and the Cerbera weighs only 1100 kgs. Thats 400 kgs lighter! Thats massive and if you factor in the TVRs amazing aerodynamics that probably helped it top end. Remember this is a mile long race. Dunno what max speed these cars reached but it must have been very very high. TVR does a12.2 quarter mile and the 911 does 12.5. Im guessing these cars must have been up over 150-160 mph when they crossed the line.

    • @jimmyfarley5581
      @jimmyfarley5581 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I seriously doubt the Porsche is 400kgs heavier than the TVR. 250kgs perhaps. Anyway many years later TVR finally admitted to what everyone was thinking and said the car in that race had a race engine. The TVR produced close to 450bhp. Not the 350bhp claimed. TVR actually admitted this. Why? Because a 1300kg car (fuelled with driver) on skinny 17 inch wheels, a so so manual gearbox, no limited slip differential and a paltry 350bhp ain't doing the performance times the car in the video did. It wouldn't have beaten the 911. Unlikely to beat the "almost " as light torque fest Lotus. And does a better power to weight ratio beat the Aston over a mile? 350bhp vs 550bhp. Perhaps the TVR would beat the Aston but by such a large margin? Not with 350bhp it wouldn't.

    • @DeuceBiggerHo
      @DeuceBiggerHo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimmyfarley5581 that makes sense. That TVR seemed way too quick for 350 bhp even despite its light weight. 450 bhp sounds more accurate.

    I first saw this when I was 8 years old and I wanted a TVR my whole life but when I was 22 my Dad wouldn’t let me buy one because of the lack of airbags. I went on to write off a Cayman S Black Edition and a 911 GTS before, after which point I drove a Fiat 500c Abarth for 3 years... so I could teach myself what it was like to drive a car without writing it off! I now have a C63 507 - I will NEVER part with it. I will always regret not owning/wonder what it would be like to drive a 4.5 Cerbera - for me one of the SICKEST cars ever made! EVER! That Vantage also. WOW! This lot over any current car, including a 488 Pista or a Rimac (yawn)... ANY DAY!

      White and blue one? That was the Tuscan speed 12 or project 7/12 and was handful lol. Sacrificed I believe to make the Cerbera speed 12. Which scared peter wheeler to much and he decided not to sell it. And I think it was sacrficed to keep the cerb speed 12 race cars going. Thankfully though both race cars are now road cars. The 1st is red and has the big v12 from the original road car. Race cars were detuned cos of rules and i don't think any are left? It now lives in the lakeland museum and gets taken out on the rare occasion. I think rarely cos it's the only speed 12 engine left. The 2nd car is purple and is more likely to be driven around as it has a tuned aston v12. And both have the race car bodywork with the extra vents. The guy who built both did have the original road car bodywork. But sold it on ebay a while back. Also there is a tribute speed 12 built by helical, now known as TR. Their's I believe is a low volume production car and also has a tuned aston v12 which pushes out over 1000hp. They have a website with details and the 2 ex-racers have a dedicated fb page called speed 12. Also wasn't that the video with the Jaguar xjr-15? That looked like a handful to.

      I really doubt it's a mustang steering wheel. It's an ugly, oversized steering wheel I'll grant you but back in the days where Aston Martin coach built its cars (as was the case with the Vantage) I'm sure they were more than capable of making their own steering wheel when charging triple figures for the car. Yes it used a Corvette gearbox. Why? It's a strong, reliable and cheap gearbox. A gearbox that's able to cope with the power being put through it. Remember this is before dual clutch and flappy paddles. Lots of cars use the ZF gearbox. I bet the Lotus and TVR had a ZF gearbox too! And the viper. It's a good gearbox.

Apparently the early press cars were insanely fast although nobody ever found out for definite if they actually were more powerful. If I had to guess I'd say they put the full fat race engine in some of them, not the slightly detuned versions the normal road cars were fitted with.
