Last week Rishi Sunak lost 474 councillors, the constituency of Blackpool south, and Andy Street’s West Midlands mayoral. And yesterday things went from bad to worse for Sunak with a surprise defection to Labour from Natalie Elphicke MP for Dover and Deal.
The Conservatives can’t seem to escape this endless decline in support and popularity. So when did it all start to go wrong, and can they stop the train before it completely derails?
Freddie Hayward, political correspondent, is joined in the studio by Rachel Cunliffe, associate political editor, and George Eaton, senior editor.

@@paulwilson2651YouGov is right leaning if anything. It was founded by a Tory after all.
The one thing I'll say is all the posters seem to weight Reform way too highly.
Even at 15 points the Tories are going home on a big red Ambulance. If the poll gap is the 20 points it's been showing at for the last year, we're gonna need a bigger set of benches for the government. But don't worry, because the Tories will hardly need any at all.
If it does actually turn out at 30, then the Tories are going to be the fourth party, behind lib Dems and SNP as well as Labour.
Unless the SNP implode of course in which case that's even more seats to Labour.

As I see it: The Faustian pact which traditionally comes as part of a Tory government (as with capitalism in general) is that the elites get a lot richer. But at least small businesses and industrious people get richer too. With Sunak's approach, it seems the elites get richer, and everyone else gets materially poorer. How can they expect anyone to vote for that?

@mr_incognito9305 I don't think they can do an SNP and hope that if they ask the question repetitively then eventually the electorate will say yes.
I think Labour need to work on improving trade relations with EU and find out what sort of relationship the UK wants with the EU and also what sort of membership would the EU want with us? When we voted to join the EEC no one knew how that membership would morph, its not like the public were asked at each stage of further integration politicians went on believing they knew best what the people wanted.
Starter will stick with the vote decision that was made and a future election policy might be to commit to asking a question.

I was quite surprised to hear Rachel say that Tory MPs have an interest in holding the election earlier rather than later. I have been assuming that with the prospect of them losing 150 odd MPs, at least those 150 MPs would rather like to keep their seats, and jobs, for as long as possible. Of course those in safe seats might feel differently, especially those who fancy a shot at becoming the next leader.
I've been thinking recently that the strategic interests of the Tory Party are at odds with Sunak's interests, in that had Sunak become PM and called an immediate election the Tories would have only been in negative polling territory for only about a year, and only as bad as -20 points for about a month. So he would have lost the election, but people wouldn't remember three long years of the Tories clinging to power when they're -20 to -30 points behind. They would have been in a much better place to make a rapid recovery. But of course that would have meant Sunak only being PM for a very brief few weeks, and he wants to cling on to that job as long as possible, as this is his one and only chance to be PM.
I have to say the New Statesman podcast is my favourite political podcast, such great analysis

"The election result are showing you is the country is more in the centre", terrible take. Conservative voters are staying home or voting Reform. Anyone who thinks the Tory's problems stem from being too right-wing is clueless. A right-wing party doesn't increase immigration to the level of decades or centuries of previous immigration happening in a year. A right-wing government doesn't have the highest taxes in 70 years.

The problem with this approach is that Labour will have a very large majority, this may seem good but in reality no strong opposition will be available to create an incentive for Labour to differentiate itself from the Conservatives. They will just do enough to keep there positions but little incentive for radical policies to be put in place. Which is what this country needs right now.

Starmer (or rather his Leader's Office) missed a trick by not taunting Sunak to keep a head count on his back benches. He IS very dry - even giving Major a run for his money; let's just hope he's just dull and vaguely competent. Momentum, brass neck and desperate-looking psephology make marginal MPs do very strange things...

    • @TimThat

You’re probably not the kind of voter Labour needs then. In over 40 years there has been only one Labour leader that has won an election, compared to several Tories. Thats where the votes are, and getting into power means you’re more likely to get power again in the future. If Labour looks like a government rather than a sloppy protest movement, thats a good thing.

I don't listen to anything the Conservatives say at any level. Labour is by no means a perfect response - particularly at locally, where the loonies are in charge, certainly in London. But the country needs a new dynamic, we need to put 12 years of nonsense behind us, focus on constitutional change - we can't afford much else - and on growth. We need substantially better links with Europe. And I don't believe eco friendly policies don't work in a dying economy - that will be the thing that kills a Labour government or makes it.
