    Thank you for actually showing how to do it and what it looks like. I had no idea the scape would make the bulb smaller.

    You can cut the scapes much lower than that. As close to the base as possible. Scapes are delicious and can be used just the way garlic is used plus all the other ways you mentioned.

    Thank you! Now I know to keep an eye out for the balbules(sp?) so that I can grab more seeds for myself. I have been trying to grow garlic, for the scapes really, down here in northern Virginia. My GF is originally from Maine, and she didn't know how to do this; not the everyone does gardening anyway.
    Great video!

    My organic CSA farmers give us the whole long stalks. We use the stalk in cooking. Have never used it above the white part. Stores in fridge for months, slice for garlic flavoring in sautéed, soups, casseroles.

    Thank you ! I have always wondered when the best time time harvest. Obviously , scapes are #1 to harvest before the go full bloom absorbing much of the bulb below.

    You’re missing the best part by not cutting the scape stem farther down. The tender parts of the stem along with the head is wonderful. Also, elephant garlic also has a scape but its thicker and straight and also is absolutely fantastic to eat. Its really a double crop from one plant and out on the west coast they are becoming so popular with restaurants its hard to find them. Only a few stores in Portland Oregon have them though i hear you can find some at farmers markets.

    The most edible and tender part of the scape is the part BELOW the bulbil, not above. It can be used in so many recipes.

    Is it advisable to cut of the leaves in the garlic plant? Will it also make the garlic bulb grow larger?

      No.

    • @jeromesassani9537
      @jeromesassani9537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much of the leaves do you cut?

    • @Voyageur314
      @Voyageur314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You leave the leaves and watch for them to start to brown and when no more than half of them are brown, harvest. Each leaf is a wrapper on the bulb and as they brown and deteriorate it's one less wrap on the bulb and it begins to lose its flavor.

    Take the scape off as close to the bottom as you can.

  • @milesaway3422

    What about the leaves?
    Are they part of the “scape,” or are the stems with a bulbous the only “scape?”
    I’ve been chopping them up like green onions and adding to dishes and marinades.

      Leave the leaves. You should only take the scapes for best results.

    Better to pull the out directly and they'll pop out much deeper where the scapes flesh is much softer. Bit of a knack but watch how the commercial harvesters do it!
