The first two day after surgery are the roughest but manageable.
Have someone at home to help you for 48 hours and take your pain killers but you’ll be good. Eat healthy and and try and get good rest. Try and move a bit around the house. I was getting 1,500 steps the first two days not much

I encourage you to take it slow brother, the mesh needs time to collegenate to really lock in.
just got myself surgery about 3 weeks ago and too and thought I busted it out after over stretching. . Felt mentally aweful thinking about having to redo the whole thing. It was a wake-up call for me to be patient.

Age 36 . Electively opted for a bilateral inguinal hernia surgery done 3 days ago by the laparoscopic mesh repair TEP method. Right side 2cm and left side was 1.8 cm.
Things I considered and asked before the surgery:
    1. Must definitely opt a good surgeon with good years of experience doing laparoscopic surgeries.
    2. Ask what quality of mesh is being used, recurrence rates and complications associated with it.
    3. Ask what experiences has the doctor had with other patients.
    4. What experience does the doctor have dealing with complications from the mesh?
    My recovery process till now:
At Hospital -Day- 0 (night after the surgery) : Since it was performed under general anesthesia , it sort of wears off in a couple of hours and the pain kicks in. Pain was bearable but I couldn't get any sleep the whole night, I was not able to lie on my left side which is my common sleeping position.
At Hospital- Day-1 : Pain had subsided slightly. They did give me pain killers so it wasn't much to go through. Could get out of bed & take a short walk. Will feel a sting while you cough or sneeze, recommend you to hold a soft pillow and brace it against your abdomen to soothen the pain.
You might get your airways irritated due to the way anesthesia was given, the nurse came in with nebulizers to clear your lungs twice a day. Had a catheter inserted, not a good feeling. Was concerned about the pain when someone tries to remove it the next day.
Discharged from the hospital in the evening Day-2 : Pain had subsided a lot. Nurses continued to give me painkillers. Catheter was removed, no pain but a slight burning sensation for a second. I was able to get up and pee, experienced no pain while urinating. There will be slight discomfort because of the inserted catheter. I was constantly told to be up on my feet and take short walks. Left home at 5PM , make sure you get someone to drive you home, I don't think I could have driven home myself. Watch those speed bumps and ask the person to be cautious while driving you home, initial weeks are the most crucial.
Day-3 : At home: Slept well. Minimal pain. Walking around in the house normally doing regular chores.
Complications are less than 5% . 1-5% = 95% HOPE! 95% Positivity. I had severe preoperative stress because this was my first main surgery ,I was very nervous and I was training since I was 18 years old, I did not take a weeks break from the gym, felt totally downhearted.
Looking forward to complete 3 months of rehab and get back to the gym and start from baseline.
God Bless! We Fall We Rise

    Good evening Dr Parthasarathy
I have a few queries and shall be thankful of you're able to answer them:
    1. I had an open surgery for inguinal hernia 6 years ago. The end of the video wasn't clear to me. Should people with open surgery never lift heavy weights or is it just for 3-6 months?
    2. I have decided to start working out with light weights and doing just sitting exercises (not standing free weights) as I have lost a lot of weight and muscle in these years. Do you suggest any other precautions before starting to workout ?
    Thanks

Hello doc. I am 40. Male. I had a L5S1 operation 1 year ago. My operator who is considered one of the best brain surgeons in my country told me to avoid anything other than walking or swimming, avoid impact sports like jumping ropes, basketball or even running for the rest of my life.
I am very demoralized by this as jogging softly for 5 kms a day really helped me with my stress.
But any person other than him from their own experience told me it should be totally fine to get back on jogging now.
    What should I do?

    • @originaldeftom
      @originaldeftom 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

You should swim instead or cycle. Swimming the healthiest form of exercising. I had a massive hernia thanks to 2.5 years of waiting for my operation thanks to COVID restrictions!! It was a nightmare and my operation was complicated and invasive. Had an infection due to skin bug, but thanks to VAC pump by 3M all healed up well. My scar is huge and looks messy. I used to have a beautiful belly button. Now it's a bomb site. But I am glad it's over.....I even had to puke waking up from anesthetics. It was vile. I also had scar liquid tubes coming out of my tummy left and right. My hip replacement was easier and less fuss!!

  • @Warlock73

Hello, I'm 50 and just had a repair of a hernia mesh that only lasted a year. This 2nd operation was an open repair, 1st was robotic. I was told to wait 6 weeks before any weightlifting, and I agree. My question is this:
Would doing band workouts to stimulate muscles be ok? They don't hardly weigh anything, and would be good to get some blood flow/pump to the muscles. Thank you in advance!

I'm on the end of month two, tomorrow is my third month after open inguinal hernia with mesh operation. My doc said after the third month I can lift as much as I want. He said that second month don't lift anything over 5 kg and third month don't lift anything over 10 kg. He insisted on an open surgery approach because he said the recurrence with laparoscopic surgery was higher. I'm a 30 years old active male, and I plan on doing push ups and chin ups after month three. Basically resuming my excersise but with my own weight. I plan on doing weights after month four. Hope everything goes well, good luck to you all and don't lose hope. Remember calories in and calories out. Eating is not a sport. Take care.

@@Ppeshkuhi brother, its been 10 months, you started lifting weights? How much you lift? And do you still feel heaviness or stiffness or numbness at the surgery site?

@@AstroBix5 Hi, I have a full year since my hernia operation. It was at first of februrary last year. I can lift weights, but the place that the incision was made is a little numb. I feel the mesh, yes like a slight burning sensation from time to time. I notice it more often if I am overexcerting my body, like my guts want to expand, but there is no place to go. It doesn't feel alright when I shave with razorblade as I experience tingling and it's making me unconfortable.
For the lifting I mainly excercise with my own bodyweight and keep barbells and dumbbels to the side, because six months after surgery I had a car accident that left me with concussion and two slipped disks in the neck, so it's not about the surgery anymore. Currently dealing with consistent pain in right arm, shoulder and scapula. I have a pinched nerve so I mainly watch my diet, go for long walks, do some neck excercises and some calisthenics if my neck isnt killing me.
You should be alright after surgery, just keep it light for at least 6 months as I did. You can do some own bodyweight exercises, at least I did by start of month four, but stop if you feel pain.

My open inguinal hernia surgery left me with a lot of pain for a couple of weeks, until the scar tissue began to form and stabilize the mesh. I think I returned to weights about a month after surgery, but with a SEVERELY modified routine: no standing barbell exercises (light dumbells only), no heavy weights, mostly bench, chair and pulley exercises. Additionally, I continued wearing a truss for extra support, for a couple of YEARS while increasing my workout loads, to provide extra support. Not sure I needed it, but it being my first hernia, I wasn't confident the mesh would hold. Eventually, I was able to discard the truss and return my workouts to previous levels. My advice is to modify your routine, start light, increase your load only to the extent you feel no discomfort (sorry, "no pain no gain" does NOT apply here), and continue to use support to minimize the chances of recurrence, until you can forget you've had the surgery.

See 3 months of light jogging for long duration, using 2.5-5 kg dumbells, some breathing exercises, and proper protein intake will not take away all the muscle mass. It may come down by 20-25% bit if the above said precautions are followed then getting back to the original strength when they are given green signal will be a matter of just 1 month or 40 days. I think its a better idea then a hernia recurrence.
