fyi TH-cam .... is auto removing subscribers ... just found this weeks video and it was NOT subscribed when I have been since you got the 401 ... fixed it resubed
Man, I'm impressed with the amount of components taken off the plane to be checked, overhauled or replaced. Goes to show you why nothing is just simple. Watching from the Netherlands and can't wait to see her fly again.
Watching this project from the beginning and seeing this video today shows the he dedication and the amount of effort and work. Everyone involved deserves a well done. The 401 will be better than new and I can’t wait to see her flying again. Keep up the amazing work and as always be safe.
Wow, that made my day Robert! I truly appreciate the time and support you put into the project with us, the Rescue Crew wouldn't be the same without you!
One day the 401 will be completely finished, and I will be sad. I will miss the step by step progress of course, but mostly the great team working together. It will be like a good book you can’t put down, and then the emptiness when there are no mire words to be read.
About a year ago I saw the very first episode of this abandoned airplane. Sadly I forgot about this channel, until I stumbled on it again today. I have to say, I am truly AMAZED at the progress of this aircraft. I never expected it to be in this stage of restoration by now. This is no longer just working on planes, this is an art form!
Glad to see you are taking the right path on the Saratoga engine. There are a lot of parts that can be damaged aside from the crank. The counterweight bushings can be damaged as well as the gear train. Good call.
Questions: 1) I thought primer had a maximum time to be without a topcoat. For Zinc Chromate I believe eight hours after application is the optimal time to apply the topcoat. Is waiting months for a topcoat all right? 2) Is the engine compartment not going to get painted? Does leaving the primer expose it to peeling and flaking with all the engine oils and lubricants in the future?
Jason, best time & money investment: build all new hoses and overhaul oil coolers. Most overhauled won't even warranty the engine without documented cooler overhauls and new hoses. Nice to see all the hoses firesleeved. LOL, "there's all kinds of room to put all those things on..." Yeah, remember that when you finally get it all installed.😊 Nice to see the progress and attention to detail.
I've been following the Free Abandoned Airplane for a while, every step of the way. WOW WOW WOW!!!! There is still mile and miles to go but the engines in the 401 is a huge move forward. Congrats to all of you.
Came to this channel through recommendations, when the 401 project had just came onto the channel, and been gripped ever since. Not normally what I’d watch on here, no idea why it was recommended but glad it was. Great content.
I'm a day one follower and I'm impressed by the growth of Rebuild Rescue! Your not saving old jeeps now.. But I gotta say to all the naysayers from the early days, you grossly underestimated Jason and the crew (and the fans contributions/faith). That my friends is pure satisfaction!!🤗
Greetings from the Philippines, I've been watching all along, ever since you first tried to get the engines started. What a milestone this is, to get the engines mounted up again! Great work, keep up the spirit, guys.
I have no plan on getting a plane or getting a pilots license, but I enjoy watching what y'all are doing with the 401. I look forward to the new videos every week. I started watching this channel around the time you got the 401 for free. You've put a lot of money in it, but it'll be worth it in the end. Keep up the great work and fly safe.
Be advised Jared, that Saratoga firewall material may contain asbestos. I don't know what year Piper quit using it but a few calls might bring the answer. If I was doing that job I would also put a layer of Fiberfrax on the inside forward wall of the front baggage compartment.
It was good seeing the engines installed. It's coming along slowly but surely. One step closer. I'm looking forward to the day of seeing that bird in the air! Good work y'all. I want the Austin!
Watching this I really realize just how much this is a pure labor of love. With how much all this work costs there is no possible way that the income from the channel, donations and merch can turn a profit. At best they can break even. I just don’t see any way Jason can make money on this, but if the channel can fund fixing these airplanes that no one would ever pour money in to out of pocket, that is a win!
Duran, I have been a day one follower on this project. He is rebuilding this airplane for kids that need transportation for medical care. He raised a lot of money to kick this project off, and the plane will be dedicated for children that need it once it is completed.
Please show more videos like this one that work on the 401 rebuild. This is why we watch your videos, so please don't side track from the main project. It is very interesting, as I am looking forward to all of the wiring and cabling replacement that needs to be done, especially in the tight places. Please show this part in detail, along with the cleaning & re-painting of those areas. You might as well do it right, as you have indicated in the past. Thanks
I went back to the first couple of videos of the 401 and I can't believe this is the same POS aircraft. Your transformation and that of the 401 has been a real pleasure to watch. GREAT JOB!! You must bring her to the Scottsdale, AZ airport when she's airworthy.
Hello from the UK. It's astounding time see those new engines in the 401, considering the work it took to win the 401 by starting them up over a year and a half ago!
A huge milestone and so nostalgic to see engines on the 401 again after all these years. Kudos to the team for keeping things moving and sharing with us.
Step by step, inch by inch, the 401 really is coming back to Life, just like her name!!! Amazing effort by the WHOLE Team!!! Suggestion.... for the LAST video... when the 401 returns to the AIR.... what about a 'cost breakdown' to rebuild this bird... if it's not too scary??? =)
Flying has always been a dream for me. I used to love the show " sky king" and his twin engine plane. I started watching your video from the beginning and I can't wait to see the finished product. Hopefully I can see it in person. I think the work all of you are doing is doing so much good for your local charities. Hope you will post where the first flight will be.
I knew small planes were complicated but until watching Rebuild Rescue I had no idea how complicated they are! Even watching the episode on the nose wheel assembly had 4 times as many parts as I would have thought. Love the show! Part of my Saturday morning ritual now.
The stuff I have seen used on parts going overseas is called cosmoline. It's a green film and it is nasty to take off but it will protect metals from salt water corrosion.
Looks like a thin coat of Cosmoline is what they coated the engine with. It is roughly the same thing that they spray on military weapons when the factory makes them before they get crated up.
I know a full rebuild is a LOT of work. What I like about doing this to a car, boat, tractor or a plane is you know know EVERY part in it. You know if you hear something you know exactly what it is, how to get to it and if you need to worry now or later.
The old girl is taking shape she is looking good with her power plants on her hope it all goes great and she is flying in no time it’s going to be one heck of a plane when ur done with her something to be proud of for sure not just u but the crew that has put so much hard work into her and not giving up on her just like u didn’t when way back trying to get her going and make the deal ya made with Sam about her getting her running and it was yours so good job to everyone who helped to get her back in shape and full glory 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The excitment of getting those motors back in their correct place made you all have a huge grin on your faces. I guess we all share that excitement. Well done. #major milestone.
This is just amazing. The work you put on this project, the way you respect your followers and keep us with updated progress in a timely manner, the way you guys treat each other as teammates and friends, just all around amazing content. I can’t wait to see this bird fly!
Sweet looking engines! Never seen that style of vibration isolator before. Learn something new everyday I guess! Don’t forget to torque your bolts and bend those lock tabs!
LORD vibration isolators ... i'll bet they have then in wrong.. they are different front to back and corner to corner.. they look alike.. but they are varying stiffness in certain locations to minimize vibration.. looks like they just grabbed based on shape.. each corner takes a specific pair.. not surprising.. these guys do everting by the seat of their low information panties

Cosmoline is probably the goo on the engine you had to clean off. I'm surprised it came off that easy. It's the bane of armorers in the military. It used to come on new weapons and surplus weapons and is notorious for being a BEAR to remove.
Wow, their prop pickup truck should have a licence plate > VTOL UP < for it's Company Truck... I fully do agree with you about clean and very Heavy Metal...Engines...

I am listed as a civilian emergency responder in my neighbourhood and this bike will allow me to get to those that need CPR a lot faster! The power of TH-cam!!!! I'm so grateful for this and I am so high on dopamine now...I just had to share :P

Amazing, The 402 parts were sitting pretty much abandoned as well for 10 years. Its like watching magic happen. All these parts coming together will make a spectacular near *New 401. The whole rebuild reacue team has done an outstanding job! This aircraft is getting better and better! 😀👍 I hoped my control cable advice helped. New stainless ones are 1000% better.
Man, She’s moving right along! Unbelievable how much is left, but She’s starting to look like a aircraft now. Can’t wait til she’s done and all painted up! Keep moving forward. Love it!
That's a serious plane, I hope whoever fly's it doesn't just have a multi rating that suffices, they will need lots of hours with regular practise of single engine failure drills, these multi planes can get bent out of shape really fast if you aren't ready for it. (Currently going through my multi training)
You need to put a little bird nest material and poop on the new engine just to make it feel like when you first started. Joking aside the plane is starting to look great. Keep up the great work guys you rock.
I would paint the engine bays with some oil and heat resistent paint, it's propably not needed, but there will be some oil driping from the engines at some point :D
Just a tip that the 1k zinc chromate paint doesn't play well with the 2 part epoxy paint that's already on it, in the future if you get heavy solvents under it, it will lift both paints. 2 part epoxy is better repaired with the same paint. Even if you brush it on
The 401 is coming to life as it has two new hearts, they'll be pumping out some BTU'S. TO ME THIS A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT. THIS 401 WILL BE BETTER THAN NEW. I HAVE BEEN WATCHING FROM THE BEGINNING WHEN YOU FIRST SHOWED IT. THEN SAM SAID IF YOU CAN GET BOTH ENGINES TO START IT'S YOURS. HOW LONG AGO WAS THAT AND DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH MONEY AND MAN HOURS YOU WOULD BE GETTING INTO??
In my experience , any primer is designed to be absorbent (so as to aid bonding between parent surface and following pint finishes, so applying it before you are ready to apply final coats of finish is asking for trouble be it absorbing moisture oil or whaever it comes in contact with.

Sweet. The engines look so good in place. We remember the effort it took to get the old, tired engines started. Let’s keep marching forward.
Amazing how far the 401 has came I think it be all finished by Christmas hope when this plane is done you tackle a bigger plane
Can't wait to see it leave the ground. Best of luck and many blessings to all who have dedicated their time and effort to this awesome project.
Thank you for being such a positive part of the channel Brother! We appreciate you
Very cool, Jason. Inch by inch moving closer to the finish line. If you guys need any help, I will pack up my tools and head east.
Thank you fellas ! Great work. Clean Engines are What's Up !
Just a tip that the 1k zinc chromate paint doesn't play well with the 2 part epoxy paint that's already on it, in the future if you get heavy solvents under it, it will lift both paints. 2 part epoxy is better repaired with the same paint. Even if you brush it on
Watching this channel and community grow has been as cool as the rebuild itself! Whats up with the free abandoned yacht?!
That's a major milestone. Project Phoenix!
I say y’all have the 401 finished by February of next year!! Let’s gooooo!!!!
That anti-corrosion "stuff" applied before storage is often Cosmoline.
In my experience , any primer is designed to be absorbent (so as to aid bonding between parent surface and following pint finishes, so applying it before you are ready to apply final coats of finish is asking for trouble be it absorbing moisture oil or whaever it comes in contact with.
I’m so glad y’all are still working on this old girl. Much love✌🏼
We wouldn't be able to do it without you guys supporting us !
