Great video, intimidation is something that one gets used to over time. Each attempt by inmates to intimidate, manipulate, lie, or push boundaries is an opportunity to take action and make a point, professionally. When they test, or attempt, and the officer shuts it down and steam rolls over the attempt, and its source, it proves a point not to just the inmate that attempted, but to other inmates in the unit, and to the officer themselves. After one has been in a unit long enough eventually our reaction to threats becomes habituated, which is good and bad at the same time. There is a difference between controlling fear and being complacent. Complacency kills.
I agree with all this!
I had a guy rip his shirt off and do that last month(apparently he just got to prison and it's his first time down) ripped his shirt of and growled at me... he couldn't keep his shit together when I told him "you need a snickers, you're not yourself when your hungry" and everyone watching and he all couldn't help but laugh... then preceeded to mimick him, hulk angry hulk smash little man ..... now his is one of my best workers. Some times being able to be funny hit harder than a fist, but you have to be able to read it and be able to tell if I make a joke is he going to laugh or attack
One of my senior officers told us if you are not scared when the door close behind you then corrections isent for you I know my stomach drops after I hear the click of the gate
Amen!
Im on my last week of training the sheriff's office hasn't sent my ass to the CO Academy so ive been eating up knowledge form other channels and my fellow officers, everything has been informative....report writing sucks
William, Very thoughtful discussion. I think we all handle people who want to posture/intimidate/show off/test/bully/etc in our own way. I try to remain calm and reasonable, and that seems to calm them down. People who engage in such adolescent behavior are looking for certain reactions. When they don't get those reactions, they see that their immature play acting is not going to work and they usually drop the "tough guy" charade.
Great comment!
Sometimes I don’t realize it until I think about it later.
I have unfortunately left the facility I was at. Got passed up for full time twice, toxic leadership and so forth. But, I’m not giving up, I’m applying at a couple state prisons around me. I love this field, and want to stay in it, but I wasn’t getting anywhere at my old facility. Working security now until one of the prisons call me. But thank you for the information brother. I have learned quite a bit from your videos, stuff I hadn’t been taught yet. (Haven’t gone to academy yet). Stay safe and hold the line
Good luck moving forward my friend! Keep me updated!
@@JustCorrections I definitely will my friend! 😎
So your facility not only turned down full time but also doesn’t send people to the academy?? Damn.
OMFG the tree. 🤣 you crack me up.
Hopefully it grows!
Here's a little tip for all COs. Intimidation is just trying to produce in you a false or pseudo fear. Inmates know their limits and will push them but only so far. I once had in inmate tell me my address and say that he knows my schedule and might visit my family. This was in the 80s and I could have set the inmate up and let it hjappen, you know just been to slow to save him. That was the only time I felt real uncomfortable. I spoke to another inmate who was a regular and actually respected me as an uncorruptable CO. he told me that the guy was full of it and never left his hood. I also spoke to some police I klnew and got the same basic answer. They will try to mess with your head. Stay ethical and you will become almost immune. It's just high stakes bullying.
Most times if someone is going to test you. They are usually a true crazy person or a bug. If that's the case and they come at you in a aggressive manor. We use OC. It's effective but, on bugs. Not so. So be ready to roll with this guy. As always keep up the great work you do brother.
Thanks Joseph!
@@JustCorrections Mr Williams, just call me Joe. You are the man with your videos. To all who watch them. Pay close attention to this man. Listen to his wisdom and soak it up.
@@josephmauer8084 you’re too kind!
Been catching up on your videos, just started in county jail Monday. So far so good. Couple inmates think I look like a trooper they meet before so gotta watch for them but they all know I'm new but being respectful and talking to em like adults keeps em pretty chill. Them legit crazy ones, they are way batshit crazy tho, that's something to get use to
Yes! County jails are the new mental institutions!
My CO interview went well. I’m going to be recommended waiting on the Wardens approval.
That’s awesome Tommy!
I’ve watched a lot of your videos the past few days. I like to have knowledge over everything I do
One of my first days working the floors by my self I got tested... an inmate we will call big bone (6'5" 250.. with a booming voice that could shame thunder) yelled "fuck you police" as I was walking by the cell block he was in. Now I knew he was testing me and I couldn't just walk away without addressing it... I calmly opened the cell block, walked over to him.. looked up so I could look him in the eye and said, "don't make me walk all the the way to my office, grab my chair, drag it all the way around here so I can stand up in it and knock you the fuck out"... He just laughed and said "you gonna be alright police"... never had a problem form him...
Don’t make me grab my chair 😂 love it!
But you make a good point. Most times, if they know you aren’t afraid to respond to them, they’ll move on to someone they can push around.
How are you always so spot on that I can't even think of a better phrase!?!? I mean, even being female there was an many, many inmates that tested me, but at least a handful that "tested" me just like you were tested. Uncanny. That was back in the day when the inmates still had free-weights to work-out with so they were all walking around like pro-wrestlers. The 1st yard I was on even had a boxing ring! Then the state switched to machine weights (after too many assualts/deaths via weights). Finally, they got smart and took all the weights away. It's funny how much "smaller" the inmate population is now when they don't have hours upon hours to "bulk-up". 😉
Thank you for this, I'm two weeks in and they've just begin testing me.
Be safe!
@@JustCorrections always. Thank you 😊
They call me crazy half the time I sit at the table while they playing cards or I'll walk over to the phone when we call lock down for count and just sit next to the table and they leave it's funny as hell I'm like wait I just wanna chill * They like naw we're good will lock down * 😅🤦♂️ ...
LOL
We had a co-named creeper that used to do that exact same thing LMFAO even slide up to you on the yard and try to slap you up everybody would just check but he knew by watching where everybody Judd is what gang they were in or what they had actually been up to he was a smart guy LOL.
Good video man 👍
Thank you!
What I like about this is the acknowledgement of fear and not being sure of one's self from a veteran officer. I cannot tell you how often I've met senior officers that act as if from day one they were CO versions of John Wick. I don't know if they feel that is the best way to inspire new folk, they're two afraid to admit their own failings, or if they just have forgotten that they too were once trainees. But it's far too frequent in my camp (which now is a cupcake camp), that the vet's act like they came out the womb as super CO's.
I agree. We need to remember what it was like to be a new boot and help those coming up. This can’t be sink or swim. Not with the amount of knowledge and experience vets have to share.
Love your videos.. my first go to when being intimidated is I look them up and down and say i have scarier people in my family and move on as they usually are laughing
I love using humor to deflect!
8 years ago, I worked my last day after 4 years. I was moving to Japan 🇯🇵 in 3 days. Chow time. A jabroni just housed bowed up on me after he got his tray & wouldn’t go back into the cell block. He was trying his best to freak me out, but the harder he tried, the more I laughed. I’d heard that song & dance so many times, & knowing that I was leaving (he didn’t know), I couldn’t stop laughing, which made his cell mates that he was trying to impress start laughing at him, which made him try harder to intimidate me, which made me laugh harder…lucky for all of us, I wasn’t alone. My fellow officers herded him back into his cell while I was practically rolling on the floor laughing. I wasn’t doing it on purpose, I just couldn’t stop laughing because I didn’t CARE anymore.
Love your videos. I’m thinking of choosing this career, but my decisiveness keeps going back and forth. I believe I could be a CO, then I wonder what the hell am I thinking? Should this be a tell tale sign that it’s more likely not for me?
Try it. If it isn’t for you, then it isn’t for you. We all wonder “what the hell were we thinking” from time to time!
@@JustCorrections I appreciate the reply. Another questions, I’ve gotten hooked in on Behind Bars: Rookie Year. How accurate is that show? I get the feeling that the inmates are acting up more, in the show, than usual because of all the cameras n such.
To be honest, I don’t watch that stuff. Maybe if I didn’t have the time in that I do I would but I can’t seem to bring myself to watch ‘em.
I’m sure there’s some truth to it, but it’s TV too so they got to play it up a bit.
Sorry.
Great video Bill, will help with approach to BWH
😂 Thanks brother!
Thank you for sharing
"You wanna kick my ass? Just remember, I multiply". Or once upon a time; um can't do that these days.
On point brother! Thanks
Thank you!
How do you be firm with a prisoner without being disrespectful?
I start low like this. Say the nurse is coming in to pass meds and you need to clear the dayroom but one guy doesn’t want to hang up the phone.
I sayin a conversational tone “Sir, can you hop off the phone for a minute so we can do med pass?”
(Ignores me)
Me still conversational: “Sir, Mr. [insert name] can you hang up the phone right quick so I can get the nurse in and out of here?”
(Still nothing)
I’ll make an approach being careful to keep my reactionary gap but close enough to make eye contact and say in a more authoritative tone: “Sir, hang up the phone.”
(Usually looks at me like I’m crazy)
A big part of this is not letting the nurse in the unit until I’m completely secure.
Then I say something like: “Are you refusing to get off the phone?”
(Says something about me being crazy or nobody else blah blah)
Me clearly: “Hang up the phone and head to your room. She’s not coming in until your secure and everybody is waiting for you.”
(Hesitates but goes)
Know the rules. Stick to your guns. Remember the inmate is a person but that person is an inmate.
Hope that helps!

Ya. I'll second that. Mr Williams send the info. I'll take two 2x black.
Great advice
Thank you!
Did you quit ? How long were you a CO?
I got a interview Monday
How many times were you physically attacked, over how many years? I'm currently considering going from private security to NYC corrections. Probably Riker's. I'm 56, but in decent physical condition.
Smile and pose back at him 😄
This is the energy I needed haha!
Thanks Joe!
Had a dude punching the wall trying to intimidate my partner, looking him down in the window and everything.
So I looked him in the face, reached into my pocket pulled out my paper, and just started writing. Dude nearly wet his pants and started apologizing for his actions, he just wanted to mess with us.
Told him I understood, then I punched the wall hard enough it rang. Since then the whole pod has been pretty chill save for the one bipolar dude not taking covid lockdowns well
He probably got scared because he thought you were writing a scientific journal about his behavior.
@@jondoh3471 lol basically. I've found when they're acting up and I look down their pod writing in my pad they start to knock their crap off.
Good stuff!! Thanks
Thank you
hey man i was wondering how much of your tips and videos are transferrable to working in a minimum security prison? i feel like most of your tips seem to be mainly for working in some medium security or big boy prisons but obviously i have no idea haha
Every facility has its own tone so it’s hard to say. Listen to the vets around you and see how they’re interacting. I’ve interacted with inmates from various security levels and it has more to do with the individual and not the custody level if that makes sense.
@@JustCorrections much appreciated brother! Beers on me if you ever find your way out to Portland Oregon. My interview is tomorrow. Cheers!

That doesn’t seem like enough training.
