The reason why RBC account is increased for Thalesemia individuals to compensate for the smaller size of the red blood cells it is a compensatory method😊
Maybe the RBCs count increases in Thalasemia because the existing number of RBCs is not providing enough Oxygen (because of mutated Hemoglobin) which stimulates bone marrow to create more RBCs (the building blocks like Iron and protein are not defecient in Thalasemia) In Iron defeciency RBCs also fail to provide enough Oxygen but bone marrow can’t compensate because the building block (Iron) is defecient
Medicosis Perfectionalis Medicosis Perfectionalis sorry for the late reply We still haven’t taken hematology so I’m not well informed yet, I was just theorizing. Maybe the rate of RBCs destruction in Thalasemia is less severe than that in other hemolytic diseases
Is Mentzer the most accurate to differentiate between IDA and Thalassaemia trait? There are a lot of indices out there. I get IDA on Mentzer and beta Thalassemia trait on all the others.
hm,... I'm watching MKSAP now and they say thalassemia MCV is crazy low (like 60) for a hemoglobin that's not as crazy low (e.g. 10) and that's how you recognize it... what are your thoughts?
how high is your haemoglobin ? Iron deficience would cause a low RBC count and low haemoblogin. You seem to have normal RBC count so this infex doesn't apply to you.
This is the worst explanation. Why do you mean- nobody knows in beta thalassemia- the RBC is normal- and nobody knows? it's because it's globin synthesis deficiency- so the amount of RBC produced is normal. You need to put the explanation behind it and "the numbers are usually like this". Otherwise, good try.
+Jenny Lee Thanks for your feedback. In Rapid Review of Pathology 4th edition by Edward Goljan, MD, published by Saunders (2013) on page 291: “There is no consensus as to why the RBC Count is normal to increased, when the hemoglobin and hematocrit are decreased; however, it’s a very useful clinical finding”. Hope it helps!

you are the reason i can go through my hematology course
Awesome 👏
You rock Medicosis!!!!! Thank you so much for helping me master hematology all these months :')
Your effort is very much appreciated
You’re very welcome 😊

Simple and easy to understand, thank you for your video.
My pleasure 😇
02.00 how about if mentzer index is equal 13 ?
Rbc high for thalssemia because kidney is producing more EPO in response to hypoxia.
I am annoyed I did not learn this in Hematology. Seriously awesome!
Thank you so much 😊

Why isn’t that true for all hemolytic anemias? 🤔

Nice video explaining it, recently only came across with this channel. Good one, hoping to see more video in future :) :) thanks
You are very welcome...glad to see you here :)

Superb explanation !
Thanks 🙏
I am getting 13.05...what does it mean??
Thanks for explanation as if we are stupid. Because i just can understand by this method
Why? No bodies know…. Bump for algorithm.
Is the RBC count increase due to extramedullary erythropoiesis? ( which isn't happening in case of fe deficiency anaemia as iron is low)
No body knows that was epic
Thank you
Thank you so much bro
Rbc count In thalassemia is normal to high nobody knows why
My pleasure!

My pleasure 😇
superb
thanks man
And thank you..
Excellent
Thank you :)
THANK YOU
My pleasure 😇
Could the increased erythropoiesis seen in Thalassemia contribute to the increased RBC count?
Then why don’t we see high RBC count in every other hemolytic anemia? 🤔
Bro please give me one reference book for this index which is mentioned in the book I need it for my thesis
Rodak’s hematology 7th edition
But what if you have both?
That’s a very good question...In that situation, I think you shouldn’t use this index.
That's what I have and it seems like many people don't really understand it. There is another issue too I guess, but I guess I'm rare.
Sir mine rbcs count are 6.44 and hb is 12.9 please tell me what is it.... And mcv is 70.5
What if MCV(and MCH) is low, RBC(and RDW) is high but the index is 14(doesn't fit either thing)?
It's iron def

my RBC is 5.7 and my MCV is 79.9. the calculation shows that I got 14. so am i considered being an iron deficiency?

Interesting
Yup 👍
Mine RBC 6.85
Mcv 58 . What mine
thalasimia
Nobody knows why
O.K., but would you please wake up !
Ok
I don't like to hear no from Ur mouth even if it is correct. Thank u medical god
Thank you ☺️
