Explosive performance with a full band. When they arrived in Melbourne in 1983 with only half a band still sounded great. Small crowds in a small venue amazed me. JLP wheeled out on stage in a shopping trolley was hilarious performance. I want more..
I went to this gig amongst many others at the Hacienda in the early/mid 80's including the Cramps, Cocteau Twins, Smiths, Neubauten, etc, but they air brushed all of that side of the club from the film 24 Hour Party People. 'Sex Beat' was always a popular ditty down at the Ritz round the corner.
Good God, Duckworth is an insane player. Him and Jeff are truly men possessed. I remember reading somewhere that in late '83 the latter felt he had no choice but to learn to sing and play guitar at the same time, since the former created two guitarists worth of sound, and the band was hollow without him. Just listen to that chorus riff on "John Hardy" and you'll see what I mean!
So amazing to hear sweet Jeffrey Lee singin' "Run Through The Jungle." A thorough and necessary desecration. You may be interested to know that Lydia Lunch also thoroughly desecrated "Run Through The Jungle", once with her band Eight-Eyed Spy, and at least once live with Rowland S. Howard. Hear her here, with Rowland: th-cam.com/video/OjqLtd_30Tg/w-d-xo.html
Thanks a million for the guys that made this video. You never know what to exactly expect when the band comes on and it's such a marvel this can be watched on any device 40 years later. This is without a doubt an important document!
The Gun Club - The Hacienda Club, Manchester, UK; April 20 1983 Jeffrey Lee Pierce - vocals Jim Duckworth - guitar Patricia Morrison - bass Dee Pop - drums
Thank you for posting these amazing videos!! I’m catching up to a youth I was robbed from. I wish I could own a Time Machine. This was so missing in my teens!!!!
i'have been knowing them for 35 years ! i saw them on stage at la mutualité in Paris in early 80ies. one of my favorite concert ever. JLP was drunk , he couldn't hardly stand but i remember the way he played guitar: wild and inspired. i wish i could find a recording of this concert.
JLP was always rather tone deaf as a singer and yet scores of us loved him & this band. Nothing else like The Gun Club. Hard to describe so why bother. Long live the king.
I got to be honest, he has inspiered my singing quite alot with the "out of tune" in tune thing when singing, another band with a good singer who can sing is Madrugada but who is still very inspiered by this
He wasn't tone deaf. He sung like that on purpose. He had the voice of an angel yet he nigh on murdered most of his vocal performances intentionally. That takes fucking character and commitment.
@@oscaroscar7904 They are really good to my ears. I'll need to listen more but I like the overall tone of the instruments & the bands vibe. Thanks for the tip!
This Gun Club line up didn't record in the studio. However, the Death Party EP was recorded by this version of The Gun Club without Patricia Morrison. Jimmy Joe Uliana played bass on the EP, except on "The Lie" where Pierce played bass. Pierce also played guitar and piano on the EP.
This singer was the 2d Coming of the Lizard King I recall his eyes falling back in his head snd him going limp snd crashing down to the stage where he resumed singing and The band played on

Uma pena o documentário do Jeffrey Lee não estar legendado, o jeito é esperar alguma alma de boa vontade fazer isso. Apesar que por aqui no Brasil, a galera nem conhece essa banda...
What guitar is Jim Duckworth playing on Death Party? is it a Glenn Burton? Or is it a Gretsch? But Glenn Burton is a cheap guitar ( maybe not good enough for a pro-band) but I read it somewhere however I cannot find any info in what their gear was.
Same, I'm obsessed now, check out cranford nix so underrated and died to young he also lived the songs he wrote though cranford and his band the malakas never got big I guess his contionary tale and death is like marks and jpl life
Drew Hayes a lot of GREAT bands played that club, that's one place that should still be standing, but it's long gone, like all these great shows....Thanks so much to whomever had this and uploaded it!!! Not much of this great stuff around!!
+Lewis Inglis its Jeffery Lee Pierce. same as on said l.p... always jeffery Lee. sorry. he never could singer very tunefully . but i still think its great, its a very raw live gig
I had the pleasure of watching JLP & Gun Club play many times in their various incarnations. It was always interesting, and the unpredictability added a certain extra anticipation to how each performance would unfold. In the context of these specific comments, I can share one of my enduring memories: Gun Club was the opening act for a more popular group, which meant a bigger "not there to see Gun Club" portion of the audience. After a few songs, I heard someone behind me ask of their companion "do you think he sounds like that ON PURPOSE?" It encapsulated much of the reality of JLP's vocals - and I found it simultaneously funny and sad that he was actually singing 'better' that night than at many other shows I'd seen.

The energy is so potent, it makes me wish I was there fucked up and just going wild. Love this band so much.
you should have been at their best gig i ve seen all of them tripping on acid..dingwalls 83
The usual Manchester big 'eads in the audience, shame. :(
But fuck 'em, I still feel SO LUCKY to have seen this band live. One of the greats!

Yeah, I saw The Birthday Party and The Residents/Snakefinger there. A great venue.

I agree. The best personnel of the band. Duckworth is great!
One of the best bands around at that time with an amazing rhythm section.

Most underrated band ever. JLP was pure genius

Peter McNally: Doesn't matter when you first heard Gun Club - welcome!
Bem vindo ✌️🇧🇷

One of the things I love about punk, you don't gotta be a good singer
He sang in the key of Jeffery ! Which is amazing. I wouldn’t say he’s tone deaf at all

Good to know the Hacienda wasn't all about bucket hats and shite music. Glad you got to see the good stuff.
The best lineup GC ever had.
i love death party...maybe best of all..but i love miami and fire of love too
This is how a show should be started
Thank you so much !
Fantastic!
Thanks

This is pure music
Black Train is such a killer tune.
Thaaaaaaaaaaaank's!
This singer was the 2d Coming of the Lizard King
I recall his eyes falling back in his head snd him going limp snd crashing down to the stage where he resumed singing
and The band played on
That disco medley is the best shit they’ve ever done
Never thought I’d say this…. But DAMN! I wish I was older 😂
very life like
the gun club reminds me of the Doors, the germs, sisters of mercy, skinny puppy, suicide, the cult, wire, the fall, the nuns and PIL
You remain a stupid moron
“This band reminds me of other bands that sound nothing alike.” I’ve came to the conclusion I prefer their albums, based on your idiocy alone.
The bass player, Pat Morrison, played with Sisters of Mercy.
Doors the most. JLP evoked Jim completely
I dont see any resemblance to any of those bands....
Love!

Gibson ES-175 with a Bigsby
JLP ran the Blondie fan club, he was their protegy i think.
Who is here because of Mark Lanegan? May he and Jeffery RIP!!
I never heard of Jeffrey until Mark , one of the best things from the audiobook was discovering JLP and the Gun Club for me!
Same, I'm obsessed now, check out cranford nix so underrated and died to young he also lived the songs he wrote though cranford and his band the malakas never got big I guess his contionary tale and death is like marks and jpl life
that first song doesn't sound like strange fruit at all
Dead man walking... already than....
I was drinking with him in London ._._.Dangerous .
@@mickbund8226 What do you mean by dangerous?
The smiths had played this same club, cool.
Drew Hayes a lot of GREAT bands played that club, that's one place that should still be standing, but it's long gone, like all these great shows....Thanks so much to whomever had this and uploaded it!!! Not much of this great stuff around!!

Lewis Inglis the offtune stuff was pure charm of his singing, if u don't get it, then it's not for you, then!😊
Sorry, we are not born in the digital recording era... Hail magnetic tapes!
@@22222JD Singing off-key isn't charming at all, it's just bad, no matter how you try to spin it or who the performer responsible for it is.
Look at Miss VANIAN, HOW CHUPPY SHE WAS.
