  • We've gone back down to Campbeltown and the Machrihanish campsite in our campervan.
Basically, every now and again we need to go back for a little top up.
Oh, and the Machrihanish campsite also does pods and holiday lets with hot tubs. Some of our kids and grandkids took the hot tub option and loved it.

Enjoyed this vid, thanks. One side of my Scottish forbears were based in Campbeltown with some grand folk in the nearby tiny community of Bellochantuy.
My grandfather (arriving in Sydney Australia in 1912 as a lad), called his first house 'Daavar', a tribute no doubt to Daavar Island off Campbeltown..

      Hi Barbara😃
We spent many a happy evening in the Bellochantuy hotel bar when we were young😃
We'll be heading back down in March/April. I don't want to seem dramatic, but my heart soared a little just thinking about it😃
Also I want to make a better video😃
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😃

That was such an enjoyable watch. YT suggested this out of the blue and having family there, I had to have a look. I'm so glad I did. Thank you for sharing.

That’s lovely to hear. Campbeltown is “full of kind hearted people who would help you in a heartbeat”. In exclamation marks because it’s actually a comment from someone else😀

I’ve said a couple of times that wouldn’t it be great if our grandparents (or even great grandparents) had been able to have access to this technology. I would have loved to watch them tell us about their lives, and maybe drop a few breadcrumbs for us😀
      That’s what it is really.
Thank you very much for watching😀
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona.

What a brilliant video my husband was on the oil rigs for 35 years and he laughed when you mentioned the jokes men on the rigs would have their hard hats on with paper cups stuck to them as they walked passed someone they would stick a cup on, your a lovely pair of people and people would be lucky to have you as their friends have a lovely year xx

What a beautiful video, so heart felt 😊. People today seem to think that you have to own a lot of things to be happy when truly having good friends and family experiences are worth more than any stuff. Loved it ❤

We have spent most of our lives budgeting. There was a short spell where we didn't have to budget so much. In our terms that just meant that when we were tent camping with the kids we could go to a chain restaurant occasionally instead of cooking on the old camp stove, or a little BBQ. We hated it! Straight back to budgeting. It was much more fun😀
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona.

Great vid. My father was from Campbeltown and in the 60’s and early 70’s we spent a lot of summer holidays visiting family. My gran used to live at Stewarton and I still have an aunt who lives in the town…….Great memories. Thanks for posting.

Yeah I think it's the people that make it. I think Caroline commented something like "good decent people that would help you in a heartbeat". I think that described it better than I ever could😀

Thank you so very much for this video. Campbeltown & the Kintyre Peninsula are #1 on my bucket list. I have ancestors that were born, raised, lived & died there going all the way back to the 1600's - 1700's (MacNaughton). Now, after watching this I want to go even more. Slainte Mhath!

I really hope you do manage to visit. I think Campbeltown is unique in many ways, but especially in how easy it is to strike up a conversation with someone. People are genuinely interested in each other. I'm sure you would pretty quickly get some information about your ancestors😀
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀

When I left I genuinely was only trying to make enough money to buy a fishing boat and come back😀. I do think that it was that decency and good common sense that's embedded in Campbeltown (and surrounding area) that kept me going through tougher times.

Hi its lovely to here about growing up in different comunties, we grew up in a village couple shops two pubs one being a club. The fathers followed there father and the sons followed on to go only to these to drinking holes. The girls me being one of them at the time don't go where our men of the family went we went to drink at Whitley Bay and go clubbing no eyes on us lol. It was the brick yard the coal mines or farming, now all that's gone, and so has the village expanded so much now if my dad could come back he would be disappointed, but progress has to happen. Enjoyed your video many more😉

We spent some time in the NE when we were young. We had friends there who took us out to their local working mens club. The women went to the bingo first and met the men in the bar later😀. The women cooked the Sunday lunch while the men went to the pub! Federation ale was what everyone drank if I remember. That sort of traditional lifestyle was a little odd to us (I remember Rhona jumping up to go to the pub on the Sunday only to be told she was helping with the lunch)😀. However looking at a typical Friday night say, the women got to spend time together, the men got to spend time together, and everyone was delighted when they got back together. Worked for them anyway😀
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀

Although we’re about five and a half hours away at least we can get back. It feels like we just need to now and again for a wee top up😀
When things are a bit crazy you just go there and it’s timeless if you know what I mean. I don’t mean it doesn’t change, more that the decency and common sense that passes generation to generation is always there.
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀

@@RobbotheHighlanderOh, I totally understand what you mean. I miss the place, but also the people and the kindness. Just mostly decent, good people who will help you in a heartbeat. Sadly, I don't have that here. There's plenty of places in this country where people are close and look out for each other, unfortunately New York isn't really one of them lol. We actually were in the Grammar school together. I don't know if you'll remember me, but I think Rhona might as we used to hang out together. Caroline Timms is my maiden name. But, thank you for the reply Brian and Rhona. I look forward to your next visit to Campbeltown. I've also been enjoying watching your traveling adventures 😊

Great vlog Brian and very well put, outsiders looking in mostly have not got a clue because they have never lived that life, as an agricultural engineer the pay was very poor, but that never bothered me the job was dirty, dangerous and hard but i loved it the bunch of people i worked with were and still are amazing although sadly getting fewer year by year and we still get together when we can and they come from as faer and New Zealand and its like we only saw each other yesterday. I love your vlogs and long may they continue although there needs to be more boats sorry Rhona

Well, she did come up the pier but only to see the big sailing boat😀
Yeah it seems to me we worked longer hours at more physical jobs but were less tired than people seem to be now. Then I remember that our grandparents probably wondered why we we were always whining about how tired we were while working less hours than they did😀
I think watching my grandfather and grandmother getting up at 4am, so he could catch a bus to work on a building site made a lasting impression on me. If it’s easier than that your doing okay, if you know what I mean.
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀

      Hi Paul😀
Yeah, Muneroy cafe at Southend is great😀 I think that’s the thing about the bottom end of Kintyre. You go and you can’t quite figure out why more people don’t go. I think it’s a place you really have to relax into (or let it relax you perhaps)😀
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
