Life In Costa Rica As A Black Person

  • In this video I'll be sharing my experience being a black man in Costa Rica, the good, the bad, the ups, the downs, and everything in between. Life in Costa Rica was amazing! I never experienced any racism of any kind, I excluded gringo pricing, that's a whole other story lol. There are black expat communities throughout Costa Rica, mainly in Limon and the Central Valley area but other than that, there are very few of us actually living full time in paradise. During my time there I saw a few black people vacationing but even that was few and far in between, however, that is not an indictment on the country of Costa Rica. Costa is an amazingly beautiful and welcoming central american country and for the most part the locals love us! If you ever experience any racism, it'll probably be from another gringo . . . I hate to say it but it's true. I think everyone of all races should travel to Costa Rica at least once. It's a different vibe, a different feel, and a different way of thinking once you step off of that airplane, you can feel it in the air! I've recently learned of the blaxit movement here in the states and I think it's a beautiful thing. For some reason black people (my family included) think that a vacation is sitting at home on the couch binge watching tv for two weeks and then heading back to work until the next vacay, so it thrills me to see like minded people that look like me finally see what I've seen. . . and that's that there is so much more to life than watching tv, eating, and waiting to die. Fear is not real, it's an illusion derived from our own instincts for survival. I want to be free and I want everyone else to be free as well, life is waaay to short to be afraid of living, so get up, get out, and start living. If traveling isn't your thing, whatever you love to do. . . do it!, however, if traveling and exploring is your thing like it is mine, I suggest all black people put Costa Rica on the list of must-go's. The world was meant to be seen and adored by everyone, including us, so take advantage before it's too late. Travel more, Vacation more, Love more, and Hate less. . . and if ya can eat fruit and vegetables lol.
My rules for longevity and happiness.

I've been to Costa Rica 3 times, rented a car while there, been to 6 of the seven provinces including Limon and Guanacaste (Tamarindo) where we hung out at Sharky's. If you're a Gringo (North American), Costa Ricans don't see black or white, they only see green.

We vacationed in CR for the winter holidays in 2023, and are now strongly considering moving there in mid to late 2025.
Loved the beaches and the wildlife.
Racism: we noticed that we were a bit off an oddity to the Ticos when we left tourists areas to go grocery shopping mainly because the locals couldn’t comprehend how my wife was so fluent in Spanish. She’s a dark brown woman who many take to be AA until she talks Spanish as needed. She’s Honduran.
All of the most aggressive looks (“What are they doing here?! and how did they get such a good table (restaurant)) … came from tourists!
We’re looking forward to the beach lifestyle and learning to surf when we get there!

Great video, man, I just discovered your channel. The fact that the Limon province in some areas is unsafe is due to the fact that it's the only major port in the Caribbean of Costa Rica. So it's flooded with narcos, but it's the same around the Pacific port of Puntarenas or the border towns with Nicaragua and Panama. Also unsafe areas in the Central Valley are due to the same reason: narcos and disputes between bands. Since Central America is between Colombia and Mexico, sadly we have narco influence from the cartels of those countries

What about Limon Costa Rica. Thanks Bro. A lot of black people just can't get in their heads that America is probably the most racist country in the world. It does not mean there are not good people in America of all races, because there are, but America has a long way to go to discard its racist history. I have been to several countries in Africa. Portugal, the Phillipines, and I can testify that I felt much freer as a black man than I ever felt in America. The only people would claim racism against blacks in other coutnries are white people. Let's keep it real. That is because they feel so guiilty about American racism, and they want black people to feel we cannot go anyplace to escape racism, and many of us believe the lie, sad

Hoping that people would just be people and not try so hard to be in their own group. I was raised to believe that there's no such thing as a "black/Chinese/Mexican/white/English American. Nah gringo pricing is not racism. It's how we deal with the savage increase in the cost of life caused by tourism. Also it's logical that we cannot pay the same prices if we get paid a miserable fraction of a salary in the USA but the prices of everything you need to live are similar, plus we also give outsiders a better service and even better products than the ones we consume. For example I don't drink exportation coffee, I wish I could 🤣💀....More like gringo pricing is the other way around, we have tico pricing so our own people have the oportunity to enjoy their own country (for me it's cheaper to visit other countries in latin america than visiting some places here on Costa Rica which Is my home lol

For most of the ticos there's one race: human. If you see our history we are so mixed that race lost a lot of meaning. You can see "black people" with clearer skin than "indigenous descendants", you can see people that resemble arabs, jews, polish, spaniards, mayans, nigerians, indians, italians, indigenous, british, etc. What we have to do is to never forget the genocide, slavery and cultural erasure of the indigenous, the apartheid on Limon jamaican descendants, the banana republics, the condition of the rairoad workers, el codo del diablo, the central american federation, Marcus Garvey and the Blackstar línea, Pablo presbere, the fights won against the colonialism of England and United States, los ladinos and many other events that formed an integration of so many things

It‘s rasism to say Limon is unsafe.Even Ticos say Limon is unsafe. Then when i ask them have you been to limon? The allways say no. Its always ticos and gringos who have never been to limon that say its dangerous. Yes drugs are more available there, but you just say no and thats it. Just use comon Sense how to behave. Limon is beautiful rich in culture and has the Best Food and people in CR. If you want to know the most unsafe part of CR is San Jose

@@duoUwander well i lived in San Jose in my teenage years for a view years and all i can say it‘s prejudice. Ticos from san jose (it was always the older generations) said to me and to other estranjeros, to not go to limon because there is a lot of black people and drugs and roberies. So i call it also racism. Because a view generations before, black ticos where not alloud to leave limon. So they didn‘t have a lot of interacion or personal experience with them i guess. But under the younger population i have never experienced or heard of people talk bad about blacks.
Then again it’s diffrent for Ticos when your a Gringo, Gringo is Gringo no matter skin color so it will always be exiting to get to know you. You will not be seen the same as black ticos. The idea that limon is dangerous is still in everybodies head. But to be honest there is a lot of drogs and also roberies. But like i said it all depends on your own behaviour. If you use comon sense its easy to stay out of trouble and most of the people are friendly and welcoming.
You also get a lot of robery at the pacific coast so…

@51 Fifty My advice is... Save, save save as much as you can before moving. 2nd definitely visit before moving... trust me, it aint all peaches and cream! 😂 But thats a hard question.. a family of 5. It's cliche but it depends on how you expect to live. Keep in mind It's always hot you may want live inland and not on the beach. You and wifey might like the heat and beaches but the kiddoes hate it. So, its a lot to think about and I dont want to give you a false number. Just know inland is always cheaper than staying near the beach. Hope that helps 🤙🏽
