Outstanding Life Saving Self Protection Techniques
Pretty, usually doesn't work in a fight; the traditional Silat guy doesn't have Professor David's mindset---I've seen some of the Silat guy's stuff---He's very good at what he does. The problem, is that he holds too close to his tradition. You can't have the mindset now, that people had a hundred years ago, and expect to survive on the streets. You have to have one foot in the past, and one foot in the present. You have to evolve your mindset, to reflect life-as-it-is, and then, you have to put in the work. Great video, Professor David.
Excellent demonstration guys 😊 you're using what actually works. To hell with the Steven Seagull techniques. Mike in Denver 👍👍
Love it every time he says "no!". For knife distance is key and A WEAPON such as a stinger tactical whip, a belt with a powerful buckle, pepper spray. Getting enough distance to pull some of those things. Guns are mostly a US thing, in most other countries people don't carry guns or even have guns in their homes. The legality of whips may be an issue, that's why perhaps a good belt (there are steel belts) or a bike cable lock that can be justified as not a weapon. Thing is, what if the knife is pulled on someone you are with such a partner or children, etc. Also, self defense for smaller women and elderly is not the same as adult fit men. So, in my opinion weapons are an important "equalizer". Doesn't mean one can do without any training or learning. Prevention is number 1. Interaction and how one handles the situation is number 2. Confrontation should not be the starting point... Practicing how to de-escalate and how to try to get away before confrontation begins is super important and rarely seen anywhere, big time.
💯 spot on about seminars. Gathering is a better term. You have made me think about selfdefense in a more realistic light. Trying to develop a simple training plan for my wife and little boys. Our country is headed for rough times. Thanks for your efforts.
I trained on/off 12 years VAJ in CO. Professor was the there for many promotions. Absolute gold. One thing we were taught in regards to knife attacks: no matter the assailant or the victim’s skill level, the likelihood of getting cut is 100%.
And again...Prof. James is spot on!!
As usual, very interesting and very relevant. Not to blow smoke up your behind you have made me a self defense newbie, not a martial artist. Thank you.
I saw this kali master on Karate by Jesse and they were going through some of the knife drills and techniques. He gave context for the drills, which were quite interesting I may add. If you have the time I would suggest that everyone take a look at it. Anyway, he said something profound, something that I was actually looking for. I could explain it, but I could not be very articulate with my explanation. His was concise and the point hit home. It was dealing with knife defenses and knife fighting techniques, my reasoning and explanation that is. I would tell people that the knife defenses are not for the sake of actually defending against a knife, but they do make you more dynamic and make your empty-handed defenses better by making you focus more closely...blah, blah, blah. He, on the other hand, simply stated, "You drill to get the skill, but when you fight use the skill and not the drill." 🤯
As a 25 year practicioner of Balintewak and Kombatan Arnis who specializes in knife fighting - you're deadass accurate. This 100% is legit. Knife fights require a lot of understanding for what often evolves into very simple gross motor actions. MOST PEOPLE (not all) cannot perform very complex actions under stress. It's got to stay real simple, and even then you have to recognize you're at a disadvantage - there's a reason Arnis only teaches open hand vs weapon at the very highest levels (Traditionally) - because it's literally the hardest and worst situation to be in.
I think the most undervalued skill in combative sports is lack of anaerobic training. When your heart is 200 and your lungs breath in and out at full capacity you do the significant move to advoid that deadly knife push or do the KO move to the aggressor. Anaerobic training: 30 sec sprints with 2- 4 min rest do it minimum 4 sets more than 11 are optimal. And if you are good at that you are good in that important 30s with your wife and make beautiful healthy children.
11 minutes and 51 seconds of reality...don't care who's preaching it, all fine motor skills go out the window when "go time" smacks you in the face. Knife attacks are swift , vicious, and in and out like a sewing machine, nobody is going to let you play with their arm. Thank you for your blunt professionalism in making people aware of how seriously knife defense should be taken...there are no 2nd place trophies!
Thank you for sharing. Welcome to Fantasy Island.
I thought it was just me, seminars are like family reunions. Matter of fact it's more fighting and sweating at my family reunion 😊

BASED!
Everything is totally different when someone is actually trying to stab you. Thanks for the information Professor David and Kenny.
You can spend your life chasing smoke and maybe lose your life or you can become dedicated to what is real.
There is an old saying: Ten Thousand times. You have to do something ten thousand times before you can begin to know it.
The unvarnished truth again!

I love your vids but you need to understand the “demo” properly before trying to attack it.
From the very start your dojng it differently than it what was done in the demo.
He didn’t just step, as the knife man chambered so did he, he then blocked the initial attack with his chambered right arm.
You completely missed all that & demonstrated something completely different.
