    Phaedra this is such a helpful video, especially for the Aussie Flower farmers who are winging it🌸 Also love your no nonsense approach to your potting mix… it always irks me to pay for dirt, it seems crazy when you can make it yourself. xx Cathi xx 😘

      Hi Cathi! We did end up buying some this week just for the really expensive seeds (Ranunculus and Lisianthus) but otherwise we just mix our own. So far so good. Yes cool flowers in Australia works and I think it’s easier here as most of us aren’t dealing with frozen soil!!

    I've been really wanting to purchase the book from Lisa!
    i know that if you want flowers in NOVEMBER you should try marigolds! Amazing for me last year! also had Cosmos Bright lights. Day of the Dead in Mexico and Texas use them to celebrate. Give them a try next season because I live in zone 8b north central Florida and this is why I watch your channel! We have similar climates. I just love the flowers you arrange, your style and the care you have are impeccable.
    I don't believe I've seen you grow marigolds? You should get the tall ones, Lisa sells them on her website. I can't wait to start my Biennials! June for me! I had Sunflowers last year in NOVEMBER! Not huge but big enough. Phlox also and Rudbeckia! Both never stopped flowering and still is!
    Basil was my filler and it was amazing! I will be ready and maybe have flowers for Christmas too! Amaryllis I plan to order soon.
    good luck and Walk in Beauty

      Wow you are having great success there Ahava!!! We had Marigolds but up at the front gate and in the veggie patch. We will plant them in the field next season though. They won’t flower in time for Day of the Dead for us I don’t think :(. I could trial some in the hot house I guess. Oh wow I didn’t realise you were 8b! Do you get frost at all there? How exciting your season is really happening over there now. We got our first true frost last night 😭.

    The southern United States doesn’t have much of a winter. Florida doesn’t get snow an might get a couple days a winter below about 50. Arizona, California, Louisiana, New Mexico are all the same. I’m in the north us in zone 6a (lower Michigan) an we get a good winter from late November to March. It’s 84 here today, tomorrow 87 (27-30 Celsius). New subscriber here an enjoying following along with how you grow flowers over there in Australia 😁

      Hello!! It’s nice to have you here! You get a lot of rain in Michigan don’t you? Ok that makes sense about the southern states. I’ve been to Cali and Arizona.. loved both! When I arrived in LA people kept telling me I have arrived on the worst day of the year. Apparently it was their worst storm, to me it was a light drizzle of rain haha. I’m thinking… storms in Australia blow our house roofs off!
      How long does your growing season last in 6a?

    I bought her book last year, she's just around 3 hours from me, then never sowed the seeds. This autumn I'm planning to after having seen Janey's channel in my feed, northern California zone 9b...dig, plant, water, repeat...her snapdragons were wonderful. Here on the shore in my Maryland I'm zone 7b, average cold for maybe a month or so can be lower & mid 20's, usually starting in January. Some states here do stay pretty warm all year. Really looking forward to seeing your flowers in your spring, something I'll look forward to in mine, months later. Delphiniums **sigh**

      @phaedragardeness  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Wende! Can you grow delphinium there? It’s so pretty. Try cool flowers this coming fall!! It’s so exciting to see flowers earlier in spring! So you live on the coast?

      I live 10 minutes from the Chesapeake bay, 90 from the ocean. I haven’t had any luck with delphiniums, but I never did with foxglove either. I started foxglove last year with great success, they’re doing great now, i have 10-12 stems on one plant, not nearly that many on the rest. I started more this spring and they’re doing great, i need more garden.

    I'm 7b/8a here in the US and live in Upstate South Carolina at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains so we have such unpredictable weather as well! Tried a few things last Fall and did just ok - will try it a little different this coming Fall but it is a great book!

    • @phaedragardeness
      @phaedragardeness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tina! That must be very similar to us, but you'd be a bit colder? Do you get snow? We are trying to tweak things we did last season too. All the best!

      @@phaedragardeness Hi - we only get snow once or twice a winter. And that can happen the week after having 80 degree temps - it's difficult to gauge what to do here for sure! I lost 1200 tulips from it being in the 80s for 2 days, then 2 days of awful rain then that night 19 degree temps! This was in late Feb and they were already sprouting. I covered them but it was just too much of a change for them within a couple days. I think if it hadn't rained they would have survived but they froze. Will try again next year!! Best of luck to you with your cool flowers!! I love your channel! One of my faves!!

    • @phaedragardeness
      @phaedragardeness  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my gosh that is a LOT of tulips to loose. A big investment lost :(. I don’t think we would get quite cold enough to kill off tulips here? But in saying that, I’m not really planning to grow them!! Thankyou for loving this channel!!

    Totally agree on the potting mix, I never buy soil, just use my own. I've gone through about 6 garbage cans of my soil this year so far and its free!.

    • @phaedragardeness
      @phaedragardeness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We ended up going to buy some just to germinate the very expensive seed in. More Ranunculus and the lisianthus. Otherwise… it’s a very big expense we can do without for now!!

      @@phaedragardeness I did my ranunculous in my garden soil and it was up after 10 days. I've planted it out a while back but it has yet to bloom. We've been having a colder and wetter than average spring. I have yet - if ever - to try lisianthus.

      Hello! Yes we did in our first year. We put them in the ground in fall and they flowered in spring. I had a bit of an allergy to them though it turned out and I could barely pick them!! We might do them again down the track just to look at. They were really pretty!

    May be better to do it that way... I can never remember what I seeded the year before and all my markers are faded or gone by then... I may have pulled some thinking they were weeds. 😋
