When I first heard it, my first thought was the same. Way better than the original. They took an older song that was good in it's lyrics but lacked the emotion the lyrics really needed. This rendition brought the emotion to the song it desperately needed to make it great. I really love it.

In '64 when S of S came out I was 9. I've always remembered S and G's version as a commentary padded in a genteel sound, the truth wrapped up something that wasn't abrasive. When I heard Disturbed's version a few years ago, I felt as if someone finally got it and I could hear and feel him ripping off the chains to release the true anguish in the truth this song speaks of.
I saw someone else describe it as S & G's being a warning for the future, and Disturbed's is the anger and rage at people not heeding the warning. Given the direction the world seems to be going, I think there might be something to that.

70 year old guy here and recently heard Disturbeds' cover of this video and thought...WTF ??? Another Metal band trying to make their niche in an (unfortunately), decomposing genre of music. "How Dare these guy's desecrate Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence", but after watching this, (and other videos), I'm TOTALLY on-board here...I guess the band name threw me, (kinda' like Rob Zombie), but when I see the "Front-Man" of some huge band LITERALLY stop the music and bring some poor soul on stage floors me. David...I think you've found your niche, but be careful as you'll probably have the "down-and-outers" lined up in the isles awaiting their chance for redemption, but God Bless You Bud and your overly kind compassion for those who hurt in ways most people couldn't fathom in their wildest dreams.
