    Nice aeros! Gliding is the most fun flying I've had and it certainly improves your flying accuracy.

    Our son-in-law, USAFA '00, was a soaring IP. His group was among the first tp receive replica WW II glider pilot wings after qualifying as an IP. A sailplane can do most aerobatic maneuvers a powered plane can do. Just needs airspeed and altitude.

    I grew up in the Springs and remember seeing America's finest Cadet's soaring everyday, and the Seniors were allowed to buy cars, usually vette's and Porsches. Most polite,respectful, courteous young men & women you will ever meet.🙏❤️👍🇺🇲

    ...what you're seeing is a hookup to a tow plane...going off tow... Going to the right as the tow plane goes left... Doing a bit of aerobatics first a loop (yes you can do it without an engine)... And then a couple other things... The interesting thing is landing...note the landing gear is pretty much right under your seat... Soooo it's point the sailane at the ground and just about when you think you're going to die...count 1001, 1002, 1003... Then pop up...otherwise you'll overfly the runway...tricky thing that... All the VERY BEST!

    Imagine flying a glider with a flight suit instead of a bucket hat

    Boy! Have things changed at the USAFA since I used to tow there. Of course, all they had then was low performance Schweizer 2-33 trainers. Glad to see they have gone back to Super Cubs for towing.

      I was thinking the same thing about being towed! Back in the 90s, it wasn't quite so fancy.

    Hank, our Quiet Aircraft started as Schweizer 2-32s. Our #2 Bird (N2472W) was retroverted to a 2-32, is now "72 Whiskey at Mile High Gliding in CO. It is a rent-a-ride glider

    Do all member of the USAFA have a chance to do this? For example an aerospace engineer?

    • @PaisleyPelican
      @PaisleyPelican 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Nolanbonster every cadet gets a chance to fly. Almost every freshman is put into the intro to soaring program, where you'll get four glider flights including an acrobatic flight. If you want to fly more, you can also put down soaring for your first summer preference where you'll get to fly a bit more.

    • @bristoejmusic
      @bristoejmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      During the summer of your freshman year you can choose to do this, or do some sort of skydiving program.

    • @petesiegel3483
      @petesiegel3483 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cadets have to do one of two Airmanship classes, jump or soaring. Our daughter, USAFA '99, did jump her 3rd class summer, and soaring in February of either her 2nd Class or 1st Class year. Didn't get to solo because of high winds.
